Ya, you definitely need to be wealthy to make it to the MLB. Just ask all the Cuban and Dominican players in the league.

How can you compete when you have the same type of talent coming from foreign countries. They take less money to sign and have more time on their hands to practice. The American player is on the decline. This is why the sport is on the decline. Kids dreamed of playing in the big leagues and it just isn't realistic. One thing they need to do is cut back on jerseys for little league. They make baseball too expensive. All you need is a shirt sponsored by somebody. No reason for a $100 uniform. Stop changing the bat regulations every five years and charging $300. New bats this coming year so a whole new set of bats have to Bought. Also soccer is on the rise in the states.

I grew up Straight Outta Compton in the '50s and '60s. For a city that's only 10 miles square, we've seen a lot of world-class talent emerge for those boundaries. Our little league's minor teams wore T-shirts and the major teams had uniforms that were donated by businesses and handed down year after year.

It's simple baseball doesn't exploit the black market the way other sports do. It has been happening for generations. And when one generation chooses to not like something chances are they won't expose their kids to it. Baseball is a game you fall in love with when you are young or you never have interest in it.

Or maybe African Americans have more career choices available to them now than they've had at 1947? Why be a sports player if you can be a president? :)

let me fix this... there are less native black americans mlb players, not black MLB players. native black americans have been replaced by black latinos. probably the same amount of blacks just most are spanish speaking now

It's probably because basketball and football are more appealing to black athletes. This video's argument makes no sense though... Many Hispanics, and Latinos have the same burdens that many inner city black families face, yet they have the opportunity to play the game some how? In my opinion, the increase of Latinos and Hispanics are from the talented players from Cuba and they help grow the sport and its fan base. It would be great if every culture could contribute to the game, but we also see a lack of Asian ball players, but that might be because of distance from Japan's baseball leagues, and they might want to remain in there country. Cuban players on the other hand, use baseball to escape poverty in Cuba. Black athletes have many other outlets for success in sports however.

I'd attribute the drop from it's peak in 1981 (at 18.7%) as being mainly attributable to demographic concentrations and access to the game compared to other sports and the lack of heros to look up to compared to other sports (i.e. Jordan). Most inner city baseball parks for youth were closed in the 1980s and 1990s to make way for development projects. Youth baseball park facilities became mainly a suburb thing. At the same time you had the rise of the NFL and NBA where all of the star players were black, and the basketball courts survived in most cities thanks to their compact nature. The trend has continued as more and more white families have stopped letting their kids play football because of the concussion risks, so they mainly play baseball and soccer these days.

First - What about all the foreign Blacks who play MLB? There are quite a few Caribbean Blacks, mainly from Cuba, Dominicania, etc. And please don't bother denying obviously Black people from Caribbea and elsewhere being Black. I'm sorry, that dog won't hunt. One doesn't have to be an American Black to be Black! This may come as a shock and surprise to many, but, there are Blacks from other countries than the USA, believe it or not! Second - Who cares? Y'all gripe about baseball not having enough Black players as if it's an issue! I mean, good grief! Blacks dominate just about every other sport such as football and basketball! I don't see Whites getting all bent out of shape about that and making public speeches about it!

In the past you could keep up with your favorite team for free. Now you need a specific sports package that costs hundreds each year. Add in the fact that you need at least 9 dedicated players to play against 9 other dedicated players. It gets tough. Kids these days aren't stuck with one or two options for their free time. If all it took to get kids interested was someone tossing them a ball we wouldn't have an issue. Anyone can play catch with a kid, but that's not teaching them the game. And contrary to what the media would have you believe but most Black men are there for their kids. They may not be physically in the home but most are there when needed. Even if its to play catch.
@steve8450
@steve8450 4 года назад
Playing catch with a kid IS teaching them the game; that's where it starts. That's where it stated for me. I remember my father taking me to a nearby field and playing catch with me for the first time, with a glove he had just bought and oiled up for me. At first I didn't like it; the stiff glove, yet to be affected by the oil(which takes time to loosen up the glove), the ball hitting me, learning to make the glove an extension of yourself, consistently playing, not giving up, throwing from short all the way to very long distance to develop better hand-eye coordination, etc. It all started with my father pushing me constantly to get back out with him and to play ball. I played all the mainstream sports and I realized, baseball takes more discipline/dedication/perseverance/guidance. You have to want it, and have someone, i.e. father, coach, etc., pushing you along the whole way. Once my father felt I got the throwing/catching down well enough, he moved on to pitching and hitting, and so on. I was already ready when little league came along. I began to hone my abilities, but the sport itself I had already learned; I was now just improving upon it, by being coached, playing with ppl my age, but still playing with my father and him taking me to the cages. A father is a very important part of a young boy's baseball life, and life in general, and if he has no father, as many black youths don't, then he likely won't be ushered into baseball like many white kids are. Baseball is more like a tradition passed down from father to son, generation to generation, basketball, less so. Marketing, too, plays a big roll in snatching young black kids up early, whereas a white father will pull his white son away from marketing nonsense and make sure he tries all the sports, so he can get a feel for what he likes.

The decline of black players is because of the breakdown of the family. Father's played catch with their sons and taught them the game and shared their passion for it. Even white kids don't play Little League as much as they used too, many of them are from single parent households also.
@qborough21

Designated Hitter, the decline of black players is because they aren't interested. Second, major league baseball STOPPED investing in American players. Many black American players from the 70's and 80's didn't have fathers. Dave Winfield, Dave Parker, Ozzie Smith, Eddie Murray, Tim Raines, Gary Templeton etc. Your point is off base. Also those players were all elite players.
@delorbb2298
@delorbb2298 5 лет назад
This is such bullshit. Kids don't just play catch with their dads. Give me a break. And newsflash, just because Black men may not be in the home doesn't mean he's absent. Most Black men are there for their kids. Baseball has has always cost money. You need players and equipment. And like the video explains more and more kids are playing travel ball. All you need to play basketball is a ball and a hoop. We are seeing the same decline in football, btw.

There are a plethora of Black MLB baseball players. In fact the last 3 Hall of Fame classes had a Black player inducted. Blacks from all over the Americas are in MLB. There are Blacks from the USA, D.R. Venezuela, Columbia to name a few. Now African Americans are not the predominant representative of the Black diaspora in the MLB but that's because it's not as popular in their community. Yet in the sports they're interested they dominate the rosters of every team in the NBA, and NFL. They are even making strides in the NHL at just under 5% which is a lot when you consider it's a sport that is expensive and not well represented in Black enclaves.

Nice work instigating some more racial divide. Funny you mention there are less black players because they don't have enough money, yet the latino player numbers have increased, and the median income not that much different. But hey, why let facts get in the way of a good story.

Let me respond to and educate some people out there who say Blacks suck at baseball, when I was a kid playing little league, my baseball card collection had players like Reggie Jackson, Dave Winfield, Ozzie Smith, Dave Parker, Joe Morgan, George Foster, Willie McCovey, Willie Stargell, JR Richard, Bobby Bonds if the name sounds familiar, he,s the father of the current all time home run leader.These were my heroes I enjoyed watching them play on National television every year , these guys were great ballplayers and multiple all stars and world series winners.
