It can be difficult for any business to succeed, but Black entrepreneurs have historically faced unique challenges. Despite, buy-black campaigns, grants, and other resources, 8 out of 10 Black-owned businesses fail within the first 18 months. So why do Black entrepreneurs continue to lag behind whites and other minority groups in terms of market share, and what will it take to keep them in business?

Idk it probably be easier if was different cultures from Africa or other places with black people. Like Ethiopian food or Jamaican food but a Black Americans usually has very similar cultures to Other Americans who don't have strong Immigrant culture. It's easy to find a Mexican owned restaurant or Chinese owned but black is hard unless it has something like Ethiopian in the restaurant name

@ric Gikonyo Idk but y’all been around longer than other minorities. East Asians have other businesses beside selling wigs and skin care. They’re just good with business in general. The one that open businesses around black neighborhood are not rich, just enough to make a living. The well off East Asians are operating their businesses elsewhere definitely not in black neighborhoods. In conclusion, idk why black ppl stay mad at them bc if y’all ain’t gonna do it, other minorities will. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I am a black business owner and what I am about to say is my own opinion. While I have found it difficult to find funding for my current and past businesses this problem has many layers. One layer comes from the corporate banking and financial side which is in need of reform. Another layer is business education. If your product doesn't fit your market or vise versa then you will have a problem staying open. If your marketing only targets a specific group of people who only buy from you once or twice, then you will have a problem. Another layer for me is support from other black people or lack thereof. YES, I said it. How can we ask others to support us when our own people don't! I also don't want anyone to buy from my company just because I'm black, that is pandering and is not sustainable for the long term. I want customers to buy from me because I have an awesome product, service, and experience no one else can provide. ALSO! No bandwagoning because people feel bad, we don't need pity. In short, your business needs to solve a problem someone has and you need to be able to fill that need that someone else can't or at least do it better than your closest competitor. While I'm not denying there have been problems with race in this country, as a black man and business owner, I'm tired of everything being about race. We need to move past that, focus on real-world education (and not the education the rich and powerful want you to have), and decent values to really move forward.

@BrandoMotion you made some good points about Black businesses. But I’m hoping that more Black owned online businesses will help to level the playing field for more Black entrepreneurs. Also more of our people, especially in the younger generation are starting to realize that only earning an expensive college education and degree is not a guarantee for financial independence. Entrepreneurship is a skill that is valuable regardless of the level of education and career choice.

@SL-lz9jr
@SL-lz9jr 9 месяцев назад
Yes. The push to support black owned businesses is a temporary solution meant to highlight the disparity in the marketplace. But like any social issue awareness campaign, simply pointing out the problem and telling people to shop black owned businesses isn’t enough. As you mentioned, need to reform banking/financing, but also level the playing field in terms of entrepreneurial skills: digital marketing, business accounting, market research, design thinking, etc. When I attended a free workshop on digital marketing 101 in NYC, which was attended by folks from all walks of life (gender, age, education, socioeconomic, race, etc), many attendees did not understand the concept of unique value proposition nor could they explain how their product or service differed from their competitors. That was a huge red flag. Considering we’ve failed to teach basic financial literacy to most American children, let alone to children of color. Considering social capital is a huge factor in individual success outcomes. Considering mentorship matters and we are the sum of the people we surround ourselves, yet some people are stuck in impoverished communities where business knowledge may be scarce. It’s really hard to expect any business to succeed if they don’t have the fundamentals. I wish public schools focused more on practical skills and I wish more cities offered free basic business seminars and workshops like NYC’s Small Business Administration. It’s by no means perfect but at least it’s a starting point. Ultimately, we may also need to provide more small business grants so business owners can pay to learn these things to fill in knowledge gaps

I think part of the problem is also that a lot of black businesses are very niche. They only reach out to other black people and in the process they alienate a large portion of their potential client base. Behind the scenes, they tend to also bias other black business owners. I've known several who refused to diversify because they "are a unique business," or they "they don't do it like that," partially in reference to white business models. I get that they want to set themselves apart and create a unique business identity, but limiting their prospects isn't the way to do it. Isn't just racism towards them; it's also their own racism keeping them from branching out.

He always had the nicest clothes, but rented apartments and at times lived with him mom. I saved my money to put down on my first home. He always had plans for his next paycheck while I'm having plans for my next home. He destroyed his credit over and over, payment plans on this and that... did you you could RENT rims? Yeah, rent'n'roll. So over 20 years later, he rents a room from his mother, and I have six rentals, a decent home, and an outstanding long term portfolio. The only, ONLY difference was how we spent our money, not opportunities, or what we started with other than our influences.

Exactly. It's just too surface level. There are so many, and I mean so many variants that are being ignored here. It's not scientifically accurate or relevant enough. It's just cherrypicked numbers thrown around in a fashion that fits their message. Aka terrible journalism. But then I never seen a journalist cover a research study well at all, they never know what they are talking about. And that's where they resume it to "just" racism, with their ignorance, they didn't read the data well. After all, if they found more variants to this problem they would be able to come up with real suggestions to solutions. But, as usual, the only solution that journalists know is "that's why we should vote for my party". Typical junk media. I wish there was a way to make youtube videos less recommended by a rating review system or something, instead of just relying on "dislikes" which mean very little. The last thing we need now is a media piece that brushes over the real underlying causes to a problem like people losing their jobs, businesses etc. Irresponsible asf!

No one outside of these corporations knows for sure precisely how they calculated, just general guidelines on the types of data they use and how they are weighted relative to each other given to us by the corporations themselves. The best we can do from the outside is track known scores and compare them with demographic statistics. So, if a 'black owned business' want to single out black customers (which makes up less than 14% of national ethnic group), then they should also be prepared to fall by their racial front. I don't like it that the MSM keeps blaming something that happens 100, 200 years ago. A failing black owned business, today, is no where the same as a failing black owned business 100 years ago. They should be looking at improving their business plan and/or their operation.
@looseycanon
@looseycanon 2 года назад
That is actually closer to the truth, than you think. There are businesses, that can be massively profitable, but currently lack cash flow, due to their field get denied loans (because different fields have different risks, which banks must take into consideration), and thus are forced to either declare bankruptcy in the end, or seek alternative sources of money, which make's them loss generators. In my experience, the field is the key here. Try and get a loan for a couple of laptops, few chairs, desks and a server. You'll have easy time, because accounting is considered safe field. Try something like that with a cafe or some capital intense field like fuel delivery... Good luck getting a loan.

Clearly access to credit is the issue here. But don't you think there are more reasons why it might be fair for older people to have better access to credit in general than there are for a white person to have better access to credit? Even if we should do something to help young people access credit, I don't see why that would change whether we should do something to help black people access credit. One of the problems here is the legacy of economic disadvantage that black people in America have inherited. If starting a business is a route out of that but the disadvantage prevents them from getting credit that would enable that then is it ever going to change? The issue is not simple e.g. it's not that people just need to stop being racist (not to say that racism doesn't still exist and have an impact). The statistics clearly show that there is a difference between black owned and white owned businesses - unless you think there is a difference between black and white people , surely this indicates that there is something going wrong?

As a person who sees foreign blacks come here and rapidly grow its proof that MENTALITY plays a bigger part. Outside of that, there are BIGGER reasons why black businesses don't last in modern times compared to other race groups, that black people/black business owners REFUSE to admit. SO whatever you wanna say to delute urself to REALITY, go head and believe whatever makes you feel better. But EVERYONE knows why African American business largely fail. I notice Creole businesses have been thriving since slavery era. So don't think ethnic businesses aren't thriving... Mentality is a hell of a thing. We are nothing like our ancestors as I'm sure they are turning in their graves at the ball we've repeatedly dropped on the sacrifice of their backs. It's shameful. America is one of the only nations that literally any human being regardless of their race gender or sexual identity or religion you have a proper chance at success if you only work hard enough or are smart enough. But you have to work hard or be smart. Life doesn’t just hand out anything usually those who work the hardest get rewarded but in America anyone can get ahead. Of course you can still encounter racism in America again being middle eastern my group of people are more judged than black people so I am well aware but any black or Arab man can get ahead in America if they put in the work and are PATIENT too many of us want instant gratification these days People just expect results immediately without putting the work in. I'm black and on top of this my great mother was slave at 6 years old and I don't disagree that we have historical disadvantages but that doesn't mean we deserve help, handouts, loans, or support just because a black man was killed and to be honest its a disgrace you took money on behalf of his death like u profited off of it and that's just unfair to him and his family if you want to talk about fair. And thinking of my grandmother she always would say remember that there is god and everything happens for a reason and you got have faith in God as black man cus he's all we got sometimes and that should be more than enough for any one no matter what there skin color is.

Am I the only black male tired of being victimized by the media and not empowered. I hear 101 reasons why we fail or not fit but I don't hear anything about aligning myself with my communities and building support by serving my communities. These are definitely reasons that prohibited use from succeeding but we have the power to inspire black entrepreneurship with media and not stigmatize and victimize it.

Honestly, it's exhausting being black. The exhausting part is, we have to deal with warfare inside our own community; a lot more than outside. There is a lot of finger pointing amongst us, but rarely any solutions. There's layers to being a black person and all the crap we deal with.

80% higher rates of being denied a mortgage is probably because blacks in the US are more likely to have worse personal finances. This is a problem, but being approved for a mortgage isnt a right. Way too many people got approved for mortgages (that should not have been) before 2008 and ultimately led up to the financial crisis.

People go to any place that’s welcoming and has good products and pricing. Also my experience and observation Are that black workers in black owned businesses treat non black customers differently, Not all but a majority. It’s difficult for customers to return when they don’t feel welcome no matter who owns the place.

If it’s racist to boycott a business because the race of its owners, how is it not equally racist to seek out a business using the same racial criteria?
@DWEthiopia
@DWEthiopia 3 года назад
It is racist. But every race does it, especially the Asian community in America, that is why there are very few Asians in America in poverty. They will support their own before choosing someone from another race. This is a fact. The black community is by far the least economically integrated community in America and its not even close. Most black people spend their money in non black businesses, largely out of self hate, lack of self accountability, and the need for acceptance from the rest of America. When it comes to economic racism black people has a long way to go before catching up to other races. It really isn't a close debate.

@@DWEthiopia I can't explain how wrong you are. If you're Chinese you'll probably shop at a Chinese stores because they have items you relate with. Black isn't as specific,because the culture is varied. There are Ethiopian restaurants you can support or even Jamaican . As a Mexican I'll support Mexican restaurants because it's the same food I was raised on but I'll still go to Chinese restaurants or even Asian stores because I like the products.
@DWEthiopia
@DWEthiopia 3 года назад
@@Johanisnotreal You are thinking about it too unambiguously. I wasn't really talking about Africans like Ethiopians or Nigerians. Those communities are doing better economically than the average African American. Albeit those communities still suffer from a degree of poor economic integration. However, I would argue that having a foreign language/culture allows them the privilege to self isolate and grow as a community. The same can be said for Mexicans. For Mexicans, they are at a greater advantage due to their numbers and the proximity of Mexico to the US. Black Americans have a culture that is mainstream and the country doesn't really give them much autonomy. Just my opinion. I promise if you studied the expenditure of black Americans you would learn that for most of them, they are largely economically dependent on nonblack Americans. Where do black people buy their clothes? Buy groceries? Buy education? Buy labor for construction? Get Jobs? I'll give you a clue. It's not from other black people.
