TLDR: the three-fifths compromise of 1787 was not meant to comment on the humanity of slaves, but prevent the slave practicing south from using their slave populations in censuses to gain more representation in government and therefore more political power over the North. This would have made the north's political fights against the south (including the fight against slavery) harder or impossible. The three-fifths compromise happened for the opposite reason most people might think. You have to realize from the inception of the United States slavery was an issue cracking its foundation. Even slave owners like Thomas Jefferson recognized this. In simplistic terms the issue created the binary of the slavery free northern states versus the slavery practicing Southern states eventually culminating in the civil war. However, prior to the war there were many political fights over this issue. One of those fights ended in what was called the three-fifths compromise in 1787. This compromise was regarding wether or not slaves could be counted as part of the population of slave owning states. It did not affect indentured servants or free black people, and was not meant to comment on the humanity of the slaves. This was about political power. The slave practicing states were the ones who actually wanted slaves fully counted in the census. The slave free states wanted the slaves to not be counted at all. The reason was because the larger the population the more political power in representation they gained in government and slaves were obviously not treated by these states as free citizens. If the northern states did not fight back against the southern states trying to use their slave populations to gain more power over the North, all the political fights leading up the civil war would have been harder and possibly impossible. For example, the 1800 ban of slave importation might never have happened.
