The US Navy ship I was stationed on traversed the Straits of Hormuz numerous times. On one of those occasions the ship lost all power in the middle of the night. We were DIW (dead in the water). The only weapons system we had at that point was small arms. It was only for about 3 minutes. People were rushing around trying to get the engines and generators back up. It was quite terrifying. Luckily our engines came back on and we made it safely through.

Oil will always be in demand. Fuel is not the only thing we use oil for. A good portion of the worlds plastic uses oil in their production. It is used for heating, electricity, make-up, creyons, computers, cell phones and the list goes on. Anything that manufactures something with either tools or machines, which is about every manufacturing tradecraft, uses oil in some way or another, directly or indirectly. Oil is not going away inside this century and probably not the next either, although the future is the hardest to predict.
