BMX has had an interesting journey, often seen from the outside as a healthy sport with a big industry, but the closer you look the more problems you'll find. I teamed up with ‪@adam22forever‬of ‪@NoJumper‬&‪@thecomeupbmxnet‬to tell this tale and see what we can learn from BMX.

How you perceive B.M.X. mainly depends on which period you grew up in. To me and I’m sure many would agree it was the 80’s where it really blew up and became a house hold name. And if it was dead it would have died way back. B.M.X. has survived about 3 recessions and it has made it through the 2008 recession the biggest one yet which lasted around a painful world bank breaking 10 years or so.

I dont think that having a smaller community and more niche culture is a bad thing. Skateboarding is becoming more and more of a lifestyle and fashion statement. Within BMX there is a lot less of that, its still kinda pure, unfiltered riding. I don't think that BMX is dying at all, the progression level at the moment is insane espcially on the womens side of the sport. I dont think BMX really needs to analysed, its just a fun, accessable thing that a talented few get to make a living out of. Despite that I'm really enjoying the content!

For real, skateboarding doesn’t have it made in the shade either. All the skaters that make a good living past their 30’s have a side hustle that keep them relevant and pay the bills. Both sports are awesome and have ups and downs. It was really interesting to hear about Nike though…wish they’d leave skateboarding.

The first little devil video, seek and destroy, was responsible for sending me headfirst into riding and the lifestyle. I've noticed now that the ruff edged, real-as-fuck companies like little devil, metal bikes, fbm, solid, mutiny, are history. I came up in the mid school when it was about riding hard, listening to slayer and not giving a fuck lol. The punk rock attitude and wildness that was a big part of that era is gone. bonedeth was the last company I can think of to embody that spirit. After being away from riding for over 15 years, I got the urge again. I couldn't believe how much the attitude and lifestyle of bmx had changed. The black shirt, Dickies wearing heshers are all gone😢. Bmx seems to have tamed down quite a bit, with riders choosing soy lattes over old English 800 40ozs lol. I'm still wearing my Dickies and chain wallet like it's 2001 all over again. Sorry for the long rant...just had to get it out there

I've only just started riding BMX for about two months but I think another reason you don't see many kids picking it up is because there is a much bigger learning curve for BMX than there is for scootering in which it seems most of the young kids start... such as a hop whip on a scooter could potentially be learned in a day or so and a hop whip on a BMX can take years to learn.

Scotty Cranmer was my idol growing up, and i stopped riding for about 3 or 4 years, then saw he had a RU-vid Channel and watched his videos every day for about a year. Then, one day he stopped uploading and I didn't hear anything and I remember seeing him sitting in a wheelchair with no teeth and no forehead, and having lost a lot of weight, barely able to talk. It really sucked to see him like that. But, amazingly, he is still uploading RU-vid videos every day, just filming his brother and his friends. And despite being a quadriplegic, he has never given up and has managed to even do a jump on his bmx again. Last year, he rode something like 1,000 miles on his road bike collectively. He is such an inspiring guy, who despite losing almost everything from a crash, he still loves BMX, keeps a positive attitude and still pushes himself to grow constantly. I was really hoping that Adam 22 would mention him in this video and I'm glad he did.

Dan’s Comp is for competition not complete. Dan’s has been around since the late 80s. He’d travel with the races and setup a huge tent full of every part there was. He was a nice guy too. If you were 50 Cent short, he might say don’t worry about and might throw in a free t-shirt if its the last day and he didn’t want to pack it up. Back then we didn’t have websites and even if you had a catalogue, you still didn’t have a credit card. So was like walking into a magical place that would only last for two days. Good times.

I do agree with the last point - 'growing local hubs' for BMX and Skateboarding'alike at respective shops. However, in my experience growing up they always seem to be ran by douchey young men and social circles became very cliquey. Not exactly very welcoming to newer Skaters/BMX'ers. Interesting. Being a BMXer who got into it in the early to mid 90s (and then took a 15-20 year break from about 2000), I thought the sport was at its biggest ever. Gone are the days of having to stay awake all night to record maybe 30 mins of BMX from the X-Games (thank you late night channel 4) because nowadays you have RU-vid... but i guess that's a comment really on the rise of technology and how it's opened up everything, not just "underground sports". I'd never really thought about the business side of things apart from when Ride UK Magazine stopped printing, which was quite sad. One thing is for sure though: the scene is not dead and i don't think it will ever die. I ride more MTB these days and i look at BMX kind of like the Punk Rock of the bicycle world: mad progression, raw energy etc Anyway, a long rant.. but just wanted to say that i enjoyed the video and it made me think a lot 👍

Funny how I can 100% relate to everything you wrote. I was riding as a kid 25 years ago, now started again at 40 due to hanging out at the skatepark with my son. The transfer to the online world (magazines AND shops) is nothing specific to BMX. Smaller local shops are dying everywhere in every business. Sad but true. The companies just need to get ahead of this and act accordingly. That's the downside of letting the market control itself. You can either complain nobody's coming to your shops or start selling shit online 🤷

I was waiting for you to do a video about BMX and this wasn't quite it. Yes talking to Adam might have given you an insight into some of the business end of the culture but the actual act of and progression of the sport is more important. Yes there was a dip in popularity at one point but currently it's doing quite well. The price point of a skateboard vs a bike has always been a big thing and has kept some away. Another thing is that ever since I started riding (roughly 24 years ago) it was never in the interest of most all riders to actually become mainstream and known. It has always been about enjoying what they're doing and their own community. I think the big thing to take away from this video is that yes the industry might be a little slow compared to other sports but that doesn't make what is going on any less. It would be cool to see a video talking more about the actual sport like a lot of your other videos and less making it out to be doing so bad and falling apart or failing. I am part of this community and I will always promote BMX and what it has done for my life and the person I am today. Take this with a grain of salt but think of BMX like skateboarding(since not everyone has truly seen BMX like they probably have seen skateboarding)except for the fact that you can ride almost anything, ride through grass, mulch, etc. and are not limited to hard surfaces, also the amount of speed and air is on a higher level.

I have to agree with you. I got into bmx during the pandemic and im super into it now and it takes up a large portion of my social media feeds. So yes, “dying” is sooo relative because to me, i see people pushing the sport and brands dropping parts every week if not every day. Also, it was just added to the olympics. So to me, yes it’s still a small community but certainly not dying.

100%. Imagine making a bmx video about the history of bmx and talking more about AdamLz than the movie Rad. Also, not mentioning a single core brand or major shifts within the past 15 years is frustrating. Can’t believe that Adam”I make pornos with insta thots”22 is the source that Jimmy went with. No mention of guys that are killing it right now outside of injuries.. this fell really flat for me.

Jimmy, you usually have good videos but this one if BF! As a bmxer riding for almost 20 years I can tell you that many facts you presented aren't real or they are Miss represented. Like the fact that RideBmx didn't go out of business. It was re-branded because the company behind it (Transworld) closed all their actions sports programs once got bought and merged with another company. The main corporate sponsors it's true they are gone but, the Bmx industry has got a way to produce a lot more merchandise and have a healthier economy. With that said, the money in bmx is of course less due to the lack of corporate sponsors but, from that point to say that bmx is dying... Huge click bait! Plus you sat down to talk with someone that was surrounded around a lot of controversy aswell. Probably not the best representation of Bmx. I used to believe you were really researching and putting effort on your videos, now I sincerely believe many of the videos not related to Free running might be just click bait aswell.

Been riding BMX for 37 years, only just hung up the 20 inch for a dual suspension MTB because my knees are destroyed. I’m incredibly sad when I think that my BMX days are over. I actually hopped on mine today after riding MTB for about three weeks and it felt so horrible and foreign to me. I desperately miss the days when my little gang of riders cruised around town finding gaps, rails or anything we could jump off. But I’m also eternally grateful that this sport introduced me to people who will be lifelong friends. My 5yo son is BMX mad and rides every day. We’ve got crude hand built jumps and berms all around our house for him. I love to watch his excitement and reminisce about when I was his age. I remember how heart broken I was when Kevin Robinson died. I think I was that affected by it that I just blocked it out of my mind altogether and hearing you mention him in this video broke my heart all over again. Him and Matt Hoffman were favourite riders of all time, with Taj and Miron as very close runner ups. BMX still Iives on in the hearts of children, so I don’t think we need to panic about the sport just yet.

Don't hang up the 20" just because you can't keep up the level you're used to. I quit skateboarding at 19 since I felt I wasn't progressing and has regretted it since. At 40 I realized it's never too late I got into skating again and it's the best decision I ever made. I'm nowhere near the level I used to be, and I get hurt much easier, but it's just so much fun. Now at 47 I got into BMX because they built a race track and pump track here that my 7 yo son's been riding. Now we're going to skateparks and building jump ramps. Just keep your expectations on a realistic level and it'll all be fun, even if you can't shred like you used to.

I sell most for 120 to 200 and last year I could not build em fast enough I sold a lot of bikes but this year it's been a struggle. I sure hope bmx finds it's way. I see all these old school rides getting thousands like the old haros etc.. but I think that's bad for bmx. I was a pro level rider. However, January 26, 2007, I went down due to black ice at the skate park by my house (w/ OLD pro-tec helmet on, new ones use 2 layers of foam & would've prevented my injury from being as bad). Some skater kids found me there unconscious & called 911. The kids did take my helmet off, so the EMT's ended up telling the Doctors that I wasn't wearing a helmet! That made the Doctors tell my family & friends, "If he lives, he will be a vegetable for the rest of his life", until a friend came in & said, "I saw him on my way to work & he was wearing his helmet & knee pads like he always does"! Doctors came back & said, "he should come out of this alright then". WRONG, It's been a roller coaster of emotions, I can't ride anymore, have a 90% chance of death while wearing a helmet if I have another brain injury! -When I got to the Hospital, They induced me into a coma (3 weeks long) & removed the entire right side of my skull (kept it out for a total of 6 months). I'm a Utah guy & friends with Mike Aitken, who had his brain injury a short time after mine & it sucks how much it changes your life! -1 more thing. When I got out of the coma, I was watching the X-Games when Stephan Murray went to do the triple backflip on the dirt, went down to his head & became paralyzed! It was horrible to see that right after being in a coma for something so similar! I'm glad that both of those guys keep progressing forward, especially with how much hell has thrown at them!

There is one more aspect you did not explore - the MTB/Enduro hipe we are living in now. Companies realise, they are better off supporting MTB riders because even if they do more of extreme riding than usual rider, they can rise and promote the same components and showcase the abuse those parts can take. So companies that are not exclusively BMX push MTBs more as there is a bigger market. Also the technology caught up and you can have MTB bike that is not breaking constantly. In the mid 2000's I switched to BMX because my MTB was constantly falling apart and pro part were ridiculously expensive.

Picked up in the early to mid 2000's. It is still going strong to this day, and like everything else it has ebbs and flows. The only reasons skateboarding was bigger was because it was cheap, a lot more poser's and you didn't get injured as bad or frequently like you do in BMX. Maybe this guy didn't do much research though, cause he is waaaay off! He also left out the huge ride outs in many cities leading up to covid.

Yeah, he's talking about it, but skipped over a lot, (likely because he wasn't there to experience it) or missed a lot. Love that Tony, Rodney and some other skaters still make a living from their sport, but to have someone on there say that there's not really anyone over 30 making a living on BMX is disingenuous. I won't even name names, because people that have been around know this. If you haven't been around, you owe it to the sport to school yourself on it. Props to Dan's Comp piece though, that was hip. But sorry comparison to skating is really biased and unfair. Its way cheaper to produce and sell a complete skate kit vs BMX, just for starters. This affects everything from online sales, product availability and down to the success of local shops. Again, if you can't dig how it's apples and oranges, you need to do some investigation. Interesting video. Incomplete and full of confirmation bias, but a good watch. I love to see a follow up where he addresses the weakness in his theory though. BMX is at the start of experiencing a small renaissance period. Quietly dying? I don't think so.

There is another factor that the video doesn't touch upon - and that is the rise of of mountain bikes and mountain biking. Being expensive, equipment driven sports, BMX and MTB have to compete in a way that skateboarding doesn't have to deal with. Lot of kids will have to pick one bike out of a BMX or an MTB early and what they pick will often determine what they pursue.

There's so much more acceptance for everyone to do their own thing. Be their own person and ride how they like. We finally have Black pros at the top and Even Openly Gay Pros can finally feel safe in the scene/industry. So while it's definitely smaller, it's almost just as good if not better. People can't make the money from it they used to. But we can still make living wages and be happy with a lower but sustainable income. I'm not saying this will last. I get what you mean, the business side is not as successful as skateboarding - and pro riders aren't paid the same at all. But the sport itself is not in danger of dying off. I think that biking in general is on an uptick these days. My LBS sells completes and parts for pretty much the same as Dans Comp. A HUGE problem with bike stores is major brands coming in and offering the owner discounted products for exclusivity or significantly limiting the percentage of other brands that are allowed to be sold in that store. And really the only reason I'd buy online over instore is specific product availability. Let's also mention how BMXers are discriminated against at a lot of skateparks. . There are a number of parks that just don't allow BMX riders to ride, which marginalizes the sport.

Hi. I'm from Greenville, NC. Dave Mirra and Ryan Nyquist resided here until a few years ago. I remember as a teenager in the late 90s, going to Dave's house down the road and asking for his autograph. Ryan lived near uptown. They had a huge indoor park as well as an outdoor park calles Jaycee Park. It was a great time in Greenville. Dave sadly committed suicide in 2016. It took a chunk out of Greenville. We do have Mr. Beast but he wasnt here for the best times in Greenville. RIP Dave

Great video mate it’s good to see some coverage on something I’m so passionate about. I’d like to add that there are brands out there that don’t care about our industry and are just in it for the money, these brands are pushed by influencers. Guys if you’re looking to get into bmx, please support our industry and buy from the following brands: Cult BSD shadow Subrosa Fly Eclat Odyssey WTP S&M FIT SUNDAY Federal And most importantly AVOID BUYING MAFIA BIKES LIKE THE PLAGUE

Doesn't matter if sales drop, contests die off, or people quit to go to mtb for money. Bmx will never die, and only the dedicated ones will still be here pushing their disciplines and inspiring others.

Honestly it always surprised me how people reacted to Adam LZ going pro.He always was and still is a pretty cool and genuine guy. That’s probably a reason he went from being fully involved with BMX to no BMX videos at all. Nice video here.

also skateboarding's mail order company that's been around since the 90's, CCS, would sell boards at the same price as skateshops so it helped spread the sport to places with no shops without hurting business.

Great video, as usual. One of my good mates at school was Andy Ruffell, the 5x UK BMX champion, European Racing & Freestyle Champion, UK 'Young Sportsman Of The Year' World Record Holder and is a Euro BMX Hall Of Famer and TV broadcaster. I believe he now runs a TV production company.

9:49 Kevin Robinson died from a stroke, he didn't "kill himself". Dave Mirra did though and that was due to him having CTE.

I like how Adam didn’t talk about OSS or TCU and paying his riders (friends) minimum wage while paying himself more when his friends and riders where the brand and not him. That may have played a big factor in this situation. I know and worked for Adam through TCU and have a lot of friends that rode for OSS

I worked at a bike shop in the early 2000’s. At first the owner of the shop used me and my BMX hobby to try to drum up sales: he hooked me up with the best bike he could get and stocked a line of bikes to sell. Over time he realized that the customers that rode BMX were the same people stealing from his store. BMXers killed their own hobby where I lived. I rode a BMX thousands of miles a year until I was 21. When I got a motorcycle, I gave my bike to a kid and moved on. Now the motorcycle industry has the same complaint that the BMX industry has: the customers are aging out and the younger generation does not come to replace the older riders.

NO BMX isn't dying...it TRANSCENDED...the sport sifted the best of pros and brands alike. It's like the 26" bikes - they are no longer used for race or commuter cycling because they had been perfected by manufacturers for slope style and dirt jumps. BMX shares the same fate - it had transcended from a "regular kids bike" to an Olympic competition class. And I do like quality brands created for specific users only. As for accidents - well all sports have accidents...it's unfair you counting those very few accidents (one being totally wrong as the athlete had a stroke) on BMX...you should count the many accidents in Tour de France....or even on parkour! This video is so biased :(

biggest problem for most stuff like this is most of the species cant afford it lol. less people with disposable income = every industry that isnt vital for human life disappearing eventually. people who already have disposable income can only consume so much to keep any business going. without reversing the trajectory of wealth distribution, no one will be able to do this stuff anymore, especially as kids, when most people start taking an interest in things like bmx. creates stagnation of culture and guarantees innovations never happen lol. once that happens, it becomes boring. because people dont like watching the same people do the same exact things over and over forever.

I have always seen the entry cost as a benefit for the community. Unlike in skateboarding, you have only very determined people truly living the BMX culture, willing to take on a summer job just to pay that second hand bike. Also the learning curve might be steeper at the beginning. All this shapes character of BMXers and filters out those who don't care so much. Of course, for some markets the barrier might be too big, but secondhand bikes are very cheap as most advanced riders prefer to build exactly the bike they want.
