yea the way the internet tried to make it weird that a horror film was trying to somehow normalize cannibalism was the weirdest take ever since it’s hardly the first cannibalism film ever (not even the only one THAT YEAR) and it’s a horror film and no one ever says horror films are normalizing x y and z…. felt like so many people lost brain cells over this movie 😂

set in the 80s the cannibalism is such an apt metaphor for many different things-queerness, drug addiction etc-just the people who were put on the margins of society. it’s a wonderfully bizarre mashup of many diff genres done expertly and taylor shoulda gotten awards attention for this tbh the whole film is art. mark is creepy as helllll too

Horror and romance may seem like complete opposites but they mesh so well together because love can be as harrowing and disruptive as horror. I love it specifically when cannibalism is used as a metaphor for a type of love that is obsessive and over consuming.

I think most people don't know how to deal with Bones and All because it's not just a brainless horror and it's not just a straightforward romance either. It's very artsy, Luca is obviously an European director and mainstream audiences can't deal with that (the same goes for Call me by your name). I was literally buzzing after I watched it in the cinema. It's so good.

absolutely agreed: music is perfect, performance is perfect and final is so heartbreaking.

EXACTLY! Not a flaw. You should watch back and listen in to the background noise-- the TV broadcasts and the radio televangelists. There's a lot of background noise that, I think, is brilliantly used to give us a look into Maren and Lee's minds.

I am here because I just saw it and I agree fully... I can't even place it in a specific genera. Despite its straight forward plot progression it manages to be entirely mysterious and brutal while seamlessly and easily transferring over to something so wholesome, loving, and real. The cinematography is nothing but a pure delight, and captures the amazing and wonderful actors just as they needed to be. Top movie of my last several years.

Great video essay well done. I did film studies back when I was at college and I can tell you’re really passionate about the medium. Highly recommend sticking with it if you love it and going to uni to study film. That’s what I did and now I’m a full time editor. Really loved how you touched on all the aspects of the film and how that makes it the gem that is it. Truly my favourite film of 2022 and I think it will become a cult classic in the decades to come. Looking forward to more of your videos.

I watched this precisely because of how much I love it and how good I think it is, so it’s really lovely to see somebody who agrees with me and actually has the technical knowhow as to explain why it is as good as it is.

The red hair is a reference to christiane f. A movie about the vibrant but fleeting nature of youth if mismanaged. The main character has red dyed hair that becomes more and more unkept as she gets becomes more and more crippled by homelessness and drug use. The movie is also a reference used in a designer raf Simon’s fashion collections. Luca and raf are friends there are many raf fashion nods in this film and Lucas other films, specifically that sheer dress the main character in this film is seen wearing. There’s a very similar dress done by raf Simon’s for Calvin Klein in one of his collections. I work at Ck and our designer lounge on floor 12 is done by ruby sterling with warped mirrors that are seen also used in Luca’s suspiria.

Fantastic analysis! When it comes to colors in movies, I'm not sure if it's that straight-forward, though some are pretty clear, like your point about white wardrobe choices - that makes perfect sense. But when it comes to the lighting example, red and blue, I'm not entirely convinced it's all about symbolism. Firstly, red and blue lighting is a common lighting technique for creating interesting visuals. It's used to make scenes pop with color contrast and depth. You'll notice the warm/cold color contrast in lighting in basically all movies, no matter what they're about. Red could mean anger, sure, but why not love? And as for blue, it might be seen as friendly and calming, but it can also feel pretty cold, sad, and gloomy. I also wrote a similar analysis on the psychology of color in film several years ago, but honestly, I'm rethinking it, and these days I feel it's leaning way too much into pseudoscience territory. It's too easy to attach whatever people want to a single color. I would rather analyze the characteristics of all the colors working together in a shot; like the saturation/vibrance, the lightness or darkness, what kind of 'color-contrast' (complementary, triadic, monochromatic, etc) is used in a scene, warmth or coolness, high or low contrast, and more. I think that paints a better picture of the meaning of an image, than simply isolating 'red' or 'blue' and attaching meaning to it.

Great video! I'm guessing we're about the same age as I'm also in my first year of UK college (though I don't take film or media), watched this film for the first time last night and it blew me away - really good analysis here, you picked up on so many things I barely noticed. The genre fusion is masterful, the film creates such a tender and beautiful backdrop for the romance to take place on that I occasionally had to remind myself that they were also eating people.

after watching bones and all, i wasnt quite sure about my opinion on it. it all felt a little shocking and a lot to take in, but this cleared my view on the film a lot. i enjoyed watching this, it was so easy to take in and understand and its actually made me tempted to start reviewing films too. zofia from film studies

yeh i get what you mean, after that ending you just kind of sit there for a while took me a while to take in as well. also you definitely should start reviewing films. what did you think of the grandmother 😭
@zofia2215
@zofia2215 Год назад
@@sonnyross1ter the grandmother was an incredibly unsettling watch…. but i honestly think the film was a good example of what horror films should be more like these days. horror films are meant to be scary and the best type of scary in my opinion are those that use those uncommon techniques like stop motion or unfitting sound effects as it just builds up on that disgusting, unnerving feel more than anything else. when a film makes me as uncomfortable as the grandmother did, it just proves how well the director is at manipulating filming artistry to create that extreme discomfort. overall its one of those films id ever only watch once in my life but its definitely interesting and tempts me to check out more of david lynch’s films. what did you think?
@sonnyross1ter
@sonnyross1ter Год назад
@@zofia2215 mhm for sure i completely agree on the horror point. also most of Lynch’s films are very uncomfortable but they are amazing. He’s my favourite director i think so I would definitely recommend checking out Twin Peaks (series), Mulholland Drive which is my favourite film of all time and Blue Velvet. They are all near perfect pieces of art and I think you would enjoy them a lot :)

i saw the film not as a mashup of genres, but rather as a sendup of the ya paranormal genre which was popularized by twilight and subsequently done to death (I also loved the film and would count it as one of my all time favorites)

Is there a film analysis on your film Send? I watched that awhile back. Had no idea who made it.
@sonnyross1ter
@sonnyross1ter Год назад
I haven’t done an analysis on the short. The short summary is basically just a boy struggling to confess his feelings to a girl. But I like people to watch it and create their own interpretations of it. There were a few techniques I used to create meaning for me such as the close ups and the aspect ratio changing but I think it’s awesome if people make up their own ideas of what they mean :)
