Why Bonsai Are So Expensive | So Expensive

Bonsai is an artform that requires years of training, and centuries of dedication. At the 2012 International bonsai Convention a tree was on sale for one hundred million yen, just under a million dollars. And many more of these trees are considered completely priceless. So what is it that makes these trees so expensive?

I know her too. Actually my husband knows her very well as he was her go to Vet (we are both vets) and i used to visit her constantly when i lived in Nagano. She still works at the Matsuyamaen , the place is one of the most beautiful place in Nagano prefecture, especially in winter. It is a haven for Bonsai and cats , there are quite a few cats in the store, and she loves Bonsai and cats equally. She is a massive animal lovers and an active member of her community to protect the stray cats , have them neutered and spayed and also fed and sheltered. She is truly an amazing lady.

When I started bonsai about 9 years ago I’d buy expensive bonsai ($100 - $200 usd)… and they’d die. I had no idea what I was doing. Now, I buy ones that are not potted or great finds… rule is they must be in decent health and under $20. My favorite is a Japanese Juniper I found at Lowes. It was a beautiful cascade, but now I’m slowly making it more upright. I have 6 I’ve been growing successful for 5 years, and it’s such a great art. I can keep them year round without killing them… there is so much to learn.

Another major factor driving the price besides age and provenance, is how well a tree follows the rules of bonsai. Like most things in Japanese culture there are meticulous rules and guidelines that have been developed in the art. Since you are making a living sculpture it is hard to find or make a tree that precisely follows all the rules, and therefore such specimens that come close are much more highly prized and valued.

Succulents are extremely easy to keep alive. Remember, they love sunlight. You can't keep them in the middle of a room. If you live in a cold weather state (like I do, I'm in Ohio), keep them outside for as much as the year as much as possible, as long as temperatures are above 32 F. Take them inside and keep them on a sunny windowsill during the winter. If you live in a state that doesn't experience freezing temperatures, you can leave them outside year-round. When we get a string of days here in the winter when it's above 32 F, I take mine outside. Even a cloudy day outside is brighter than a sunny day inside. Most succulents tolerate cold temperatures quite well, as long as it's above freezing.

Normally it's just a ficus branch bend and cut at the wanted height. Or the ones with really thick nebari-style root. It's done by grafting. So technically not a real bonsai. Also takes some time to make these, just do not require the love and patience as the craftsmen ones do.

This female bonsai master is also something of a "rebel" because Japanese traditional beliefs are very gender rigid. My wife attended an international bonsai conference in Japan, and the Japanese male presenters literally told the audience "you cannot be a Bonsai master if you are a woman" and "I am the last of my family to do bonsai, I only have daughters and no sons so my knowledge will die with me." So for this lady to quietly go about being awesome in the face of huge discrimination makes her even more of a legend (in a quietly humble Japanese way of course).

Just knowing that you're helping to grow and nurture something that might far, far outlive you is incredible and exciting. I love this hobby and I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone! It's cheap too, you don't need all the fancy tools and pots at the beginning- just go out and look for tree seeds, plop 'em into the ground and water them. You can turn pretty much any tree into a bonsai if you want to and it's so much fun to go out into the woods looking for seeds or tiny seedlings to take home!
