Boughton has been called the English Versailles. It was inherited by Ralph Montagu, Britain's former ambassador to France in 1683, who filled the house's rooms with French treasures.
From Elizabeth II to Cleopatra, Real Royalty peels back the curtain to give a glimpse into the lives of some of the most influential families in the world, with new full length documentaries posted every week covering the monarchies of today and all throughout history.

What a beautifully filmed feature on Boughton, our Montagu family's ancestral home. We refer to Sir Edward as 'the Great Progenitor' and his portrait hangs in The Hall at Mapperton. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Actually there were a few pieces that are comparable. The marquetry cabinet made by André Charles Boulle for example. Boulle was the great furniture maker to Louis XIV and made many pieces for Versailles during the late 17th century. Sometimes you've just got to know what you're looking at.

Don't you just think that there a room or two in there that has only 'modern' furniture in it? Barcaloungers, Lazy-Boys, both electric and non, so he can get his giggle on, a few mid century modern lamps and a big, HUGE abstract painting!!! In garish colors, galore! With a mini-fridge on a formica table to keep the milk cool for a cuppa! I wonder what kind of bed he sleeps in each night. Something historic or a modern electrified one with multiple positions. He has on rather or somewhat modern cloths so it isn't exactly like he lives in times past, completely. Just want to know what modern or current allowances are made. He certainly can't have a staff of 60-100 shuffling around, inside and out, keeping things running all tip top. A historical place is great to see. A historical place with a few allowances for modernity is even greater to see! I can see a curved deep purple or aubergine sofa in one of those rooms with a huge 'cloud' chandelier hanging from the ceiling. Maybe a Motherwell hanging on a wall. A Georgia O'Keefe! A Henry Moore on a marble plinth! Maybe even a Banksy!!! A big, colorful Picasso! All just to signal it isn't a completely historical setting but a historical yet current place of style and taste where old or new do live together. I find a mix of eras to be the most exciting! Whether it is a 60-40 mix or a 90-10 mix or someother, it is exciting to see how different eras can play nicely together if done with care and respect for each period. Sorry, but I don't find this period piece exciting. It is just too old, drab and uninspiring to be exciting. It needs to be juiced up--- a bit. Not a lot, but a bit. I wonder if they ever open windows or are they breathing the original air as well???
