Vampires are timeless creatures in every sense of the word. Mythology stemming from the fear of the undead has consumed cultures around the globe for centuries-and these stories have been forever evolving and molding together to form our modern understanding of vampires. But one ageless and undying tale stands above the rest as the quintessential vampire tale: Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

The fact that Francis Ford Coppola used practical effects and old school camera tricks from the 1930 proves how awesome it was.

It is not just the ultimate vampire movie, it is Coppola's subtle homage to Film and film making itself. It is his greatest masterpiece after The Godfather films and Apocalypse Now. The cast (apart from objectively poor Keanu) is magnificent; Oldman and Hopkins leading the way, Winona Ryder is at her best, the art direction is still unique and unsurpassed, the camera floats, the editing is impeccable, practical effects at their peak, the score by Wojciech Kilar is gloriously epic, scary and tragic all at once, the story is changed but brilliantly adapted and the outcome was a strange, wonderful amalgamation of horror, romance, thriller, epic, history and drama! A unique movie in the history of cinema - when Copolla is at his peak, or at his best history is always written! Lets hope that goes for his upcoming Megalopolis. Thank you for a great video 😍

It's so OF THE PERIOD. Just absolutely SCRUMPTIOUS. It's got a handcrafted, operatic feel. Layered, nuanced, textured. Detailed. FINERY. PARLORS. PALMS AND ORCHIDS. Persian Rugs and Exotic Texans. Lace collars and rivers of BLOOD. I'ts absolutely sumptuous. Peak 90s filmmaking. Chefs Kiss.

I absolutely love this movie. So many genres in one, gorgeous to look at, spooky, and some of the most disturbing body horror. A true classic. I would love to see this movie is theaters with a fully restored and remastered version. Hopefully, no one ever tries to remake this movie. Unless, it’s a master at their craft like Denis Villeneuve. I would trust him to make something amazing.

Was this the best retelling of Dracula? Yes. Is Bram Stoker's Dracula the ultimate vampire film? Mostly. But despite this, Dracula 1931 began the many adaptions to come, and the 1992 retelling stole the hearts of millions on being yet another gothic classic. They gave the monster such a tragic yet sympathetic side to him, that he'll do anything to reclaim the love he lost through her "reincarnation". Also, Dracula's body horror design from the bat monster to the werebeast are stellar, so they and the costumes deserved those accolades, and inspired the transformation abilities from one of Dracula's sons Infernus(known as his human alias, Ichiro Tsubaki and identity back when he was an amnesiac, Kresnik) in my planned collaboration project between Capcom and Disney for the latter's streaming service as the first TV-MA original that isn't Marvel, Lucasfilm, or Fox/20th Century Studios related(aside from Disney Plus' first TV-MA original series being Marvel Zombies).

In the spirit of this month - there is a theory that Stoker and Oscar Wilde may have had an intimate relationship, and that Dracula (Wilde) is persecuted by Van Helsing (society) given that much of Van Helsing's diatribe in condemnation of Dracula's influence is lifted almost verbatim from the judge's condemnation of Wilde before passing sentence. It's just a theory so don't all have hissy fit, though I have met one of Wilde's descendants.

It sure is...something. It's an incredibly neat looking movie, and I love the performances. But I'd love to see it redone and stick closer to the source material, without all the "Mina is Dracula's reincarnated true love, maybe." Dracula is a monster. A charming monster, maybe, but still a monster. He doesn't need a back story that makes him sympathetic.
@johnnythermos8288
@johnnythermos8288 Месяц назад
Not quite "Bram Stoker's" Dracula. This where you have to be careful. For one thing, in the book, Mina never met Dracula in London, and she didn't run and kiss him, Dracula, just before he turned to dust. However, that said, it was a really good film and I enjoyed it.
@sim4344
@sim4344 Месяц назад
@@johnnythermos8288 I think my main problem is that the last time I watched it, I had just recently finished listening to the full-cast audio production of the book, the one with Tim Curry as Van Helsing. And then I watched this movie. And I still think it's entertaining. But also... why has no one done an update in all this time? Without the weird Dracula love story element, just these humans trying to outwit a monster and just barely succeeding? We're getting a new Salem's Lot and it's heavily inspired by Dracula, but I'd love to see a straight adaptation. Would work perfectly as a Netflix or HBO limited series kinda thing.

A really interesting review. I've only started to get into horror lately. I did listen to the Audiobook of the original about 6 months ago and really liked it. It was incredibly palatable for a modern reader / listener. There were so many levels to the mystery surrounding Dracula. I haven't seen this movie, only extended clips but it feels very faithful. As much recognition as Oldman gets as an actor, I still feel he is so underrated. As I said, I haven't see he movie as a whole but I didn't like Keanu Reeve's portrayal. I have nothing against him as an actor but I don't think he embodies the era in which it was set.

Personally I didn’t really like this adaptation of Mina. I mean, I get that she’s possibly the reincarnation of Dracula’s wife but Dracula left her fiance to be tortured and raped by female vampires, then raped and murdered her best friend, yet she still loves him. Even after Johnathan has been nothing but faithful to her and even offers to become a vampire himself for her sake and after seeing how much Lucy suffered by Dracula’s hand. And then we see at the end that Dracula is reunited with his wife in heaven?! If she was in heaven all along then how could she be reincarnated? I don’t know, her character just didn’t make sense to me. P.S can you do Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein next?
