Motor1 Executive Editor Seyth Miersma takes Toyota’s oldschool 4Runner for a spin to see how it holds up in 2017.
For more Toyota 4Runner: www.motor1.com/toyota/4Runner/
As-tested price: $40,220
Some might call the 2017 Toyota 4Runner an anachronism: A vehicle built during a time when SUVs were more like trucks, less like cars, and far less-well suited for the mainstream than today.
Those descriptors are true, but they cut both ways. Today, if you’re looking for a rugged, simple SUV with true off-road ability and with the potential to carry five (or more), people, well, you’re looking at a short list. With body-on-frame construction, a solid rear axle, and a rough powertrain, the 4Runner is either exactly what you want in a vehicle, or nothing like it.
I couldn’t help feeling somewhat charmed by Toyota’s aging off-roader - who doesn’t love something this purposeful? And while our Why Buy? series is designed to evaluate vehicles within the context of their current day competitive sets, I often found myself offering a bit of praise for the old girl, despite obvious weaknesses.

Maybe I am crazy but I have Z E R O idea what these people mean when they say it isn't a great every-day driver. I have had my 2014 Trail 4Runner for four years and it is phenomenal on the road... Nobody thinks they're buying a Lambo or Porsche anyways - it's a truck!

Agreed. The first time I test drove one I wondered how I ever drove anything else. I will most likely own 4runners for the rest of my life. I am a bit obsessed.

Bro... Dinging a 4Runner TRD for ride quality and handling and lack of gadgets is like dinging a Corvette for its lack of off-road capabilities. Come on. People who want those things should buy a minivan and stay in the suburbs.

While I agree with your analogy, I still feel Toyota has been lazy and complacent over some relatively simple update that would significantly improve the vehicle's refinement. In many ways I feel a lightly used Lexus GX460 is a better option, better engine and trans, more refinement fr about the same mpg.

I have a 2012 sr5, live in a large metro area with lots of highway driving and I love it. I never worry about getting stuck in snow, heavy rain, etc. the power rear window is awesome. No mechanical issues thus far either at 83k plus! I've wanted this since I was 13 years old...28 years ago. My next SUV will be a LC. But this 4Runner will always be around...unless something tragic happens. It's a great buy! Thanks for the video.

JD Gill I would say at the end of the day you need to be honest with yourself and what you need before making a decision... 4Runner is body-on-frame so it absolutely will have a firmer ride... although I did put a little bit beefier tires (bfg ko2) on and lowered the PSI a tad bit(32-34psi) and it does ride quite a bit better than stock! Durango has unibody construction so of course it's going to be more comfortable and easier to live with on a day-to-day basis. If Comfort is what you're looking for, the Durango makes sense... if ultimate badassery and Untouchable reliability/resale value is what you desire and you cannot beat the 4Runner :-)
@NaijaBoiTellEm
@NaijaBoiTellEm 7 лет назад
JD Gill I think the 4Runner rides better on the stock Bridgestone tires than some of these reviewers give it credit for. I've had my 2016 Trail Edition for about 3 months now and put over 7.1K miles on it already. If ride comfort is your #1 priority, the trim that you MAY like is the Limited edition. The Durango looks like a nice vehicle but has given up its utility for comfort and MPG. If there is anything that the 4Runner offers and you hold highly, I don't think you'd be willing to go with something else. Hope everything works out.

Yes that's true.. The Vette is perfect in every way and hella fun but cant really use it to its potential on the streets here in Arizona. The 4Runner on the other hand could be used to go off-roading, shooting or camping maybe.. but i don't know if i can live with such slow car.. I am afraid i would miss the Vette to much then

We like our new 2017 4 runner SR5 Premium 4x4. Fuel economy in day to day city driving is better than our outgoing 3.6L Chevy Malibu it replaced. Average is 18-20mpg on each tank with AC running in the 90 degree summer heat with mostly city driving. The 4.0 motor in the 4runner is a proven design and is extremly reliable. The 4 runner is NOT something that is going to be much fun on a twisty road or win any fuel economy contests but that's not why you buy one.

I hope 4runner stays how it does, odf road capable, rugged, tough, truck based SUV, with real 4wd and a transfer case. This is what a real suv is, not the pussified crossovers. If toyota put the diesel in it that they had around the rest of the world, these would be perfect

Was stopped in a 2017 grey TRD offroad 4Runner in a no parking zone and a cop pulled up. Expecting a request to move along, instead he wanted to talk about the truck. These things are head-turners for a discerning audience. Also love the vehicle for how it rides (just fine), what it carries (lots) and where it can go (just about everywhere).

The 4Runner hasn’t had a major refresh in a decade but it is hands down the most reliable suv on the market and has been for quite some time. Just ask Consumer Reports. It’s old school. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. 4Runner is for a certain type of buyer, kinda like the Honda Ridgeline

I've owned a small pickup, mid-sized pickup, a Cherokee and a Liberty. None of those compared to my '16 4Runner SR5. I'm a bit of an SUV purist (don't care for the crossover trend) and the 4Runner is hands down the most solid, comfortable, feature-packed SUV I've ever owned and/or driven.

I have a 2011 Toyota 4Runner SR5 Premium with 97K on it. It still runs strong and as had no issues whatsoever. At soon to be 70 years old, it's the best car I've ever owned. It's had it's 100K service ($2,000). I put on new shocks and tires ($2,000) and it's more than ready for it's second 100,000 miles.

Sure glad I came across your video. I originally thought I would by a Mazda CX-9 for my wonderful wife who is in need of a new vehicle. I am a partial paraplegic and need something I am comfortable riding in as well. I am a large man, 6'3" and 330 lbs so finding something with leg room is paramount with me. I also need the same relief on the driver's side. After trying out the Mazda and looking at both the Toyota Highlander and the Honda Pilot, I thought the 4-Runner would be my best try.

Another beef with this video: the fuel economy comparison. You can only compare the 4Runner to ONE vehicle: The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Why? Both vehicles are body-on-frame and have 4 doors. When you do that, it gives you the right perspective on gas pump visits. I've owned my 4Runner for 3.5 months and have put 9,700 miles on as of 9/12/2017. I'm averaging a combined 18.5 MPG. That is what one should expect driving either two of the LAST legitimate SUVs.

Except the new Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawks and Overlands will destroy the 4runners off road and get 25-30 mpg doing it.
@NaijaBoiTellEm
@NaijaBoiTellEm 6 лет назад
RoadTripVidz Destroy haha? Tell me how a uni-body frame is better off-road? And of course it's going to get better MPG. A car-like frame and smaller vehicle with more speeds will do that for you ha.
@TroutWest
@TroutWest 6 лет назад
I off road regularly with both our JGC and our 4runner. The JGC has gone many places our 4runner can't go. Believe me, we've tried. There's no comparison. The drivetrain in the JGC is leaps and bounds better.. climbs, and goes through sand/mud much much better. And has a 100 HP more than the 4runner
@NaijaBoiTellEm
@NaijaBoiTellEm 6 лет назад
RoadTripVidz Well, since you said it, it must be true haha. Your experience doesn't mean you can give a blanket statement like that. And if you are an avid off-roader as you claim, low-end torque is more than straight up horsepower. But what do I know haha? Keep on destroying...

I bought a 2017 Tacoma Off Road, but I very nearly bought a 4Runner. Such a hard choice, but in the end, it was the Taco's upgraded engine w/ 23MPG fuel economy and better IIHS safety rating that edged out the Runner.

LOL. once in though, there's this feeling of "I can do all things and conquer all terrain!!"... priceless

That's when you know this guys doesn't know much about the truck. I noticed it too. I just drove across northeastern Canada with mine. A thousand miles of gravel roads in Labrador and another 2500 miled of paved roads across 4 provinces. Drove along rocky beaches for miles in Newfounland to find a nice spot to sleep and climbed a ski slope in Nova Scotia along the cabot trail. I don't think there are many other vehicules like this out there. It can literally do everything. And it won't break along the way thanks to it's legendary reliability.

Worst feature of the 4Runner is it still having only the 5 speed auto, this really hampers the performance, refinement and mpg. It seems that would be so easy to upgrade. The other negatives are the price you pay for the on frame design and the price for the benefits that gives. My other gripe is that neither me at 6' 4" or my wife at 5' 2" found the seat cushions remotely comfortable on a long trip, it reminded me of riding my motorcycle after 100 miles. From driving a 4Runner over the same 700 mile route as a Jeep Grand Cherokee I found barely 20 mpg for the 4 Runner yet 25 mpg in the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, so be sure you want what the 4Runner offers before getting your check book out.

One thing you can’t show in a video...the INSANELY HIGH RELIABILITY of the 4Runner. Trust me: you ain’t gettin that in a Jeep or anything else similar.

Mine has leather. I will never understand why they put that ugly pin striping on the seats.

The Toyota FORTUNER is a little bit more of road capable and more fun to drive than the 4RUNNER IMO.

I’ll wait for the manual transmission
@fiveowaf454
@fiveowaf454 4 года назад
I fear you'll have a long wait, Manual transmissions in the US are pretty much a thing of the past, demand just doesn't warrant manufacturers bothering with them, which is a shame.

I have a purchased the sr5 2017 you know what guys I don't like it so bad gas mileage And so heavy for v6 and the transmission just 5 with all the wait and towing and the dealer lie the I have approved the car did 14.7 +AC HW 12 .8 city +AC

Umar J I bought one too but as much of a gas hog it is, I'm more comfortable that the fact it will outlast most suvs out there which makes up the headache I had with my old ford. You don't buy an SUV worrying so much about gas mileage.

The V8 land cruiser does everything better except cargo. The cruiser is cheaper to own too.

waleed khan He's saying basically if you don't plan to go off road or tow something don't buy this. It's not a grocery getter, it's a pickup with a covered bed.

1grfe is almost 20 year's on the damn 4runner and don't get me wrong I own a 06 but is like Toyota loss there moyo and the explorer is looking desirable with that twin turbo engine 😜.

Explorer costs in the range of 65k with true 4WD not to mention its a crossover now.

James Simpson This switch must of been not to long ago about the setup of FR to FF and what am trying to point out is that the 4runner a long with the brand Yota is been dull for quite some time that's all am saying.

guy proulx Dude I only have 06 I'll never off road on it and am just point out some points on how the Runner could get better.
@Carlos_Jzx
@Carlos_Jzx 7 лет назад
guy proulx Just to refine exactly what they did on dividing this last generation the sport model and luxury model.My only issue is that they have never made then desirable from factory for example the new sport model is nice and everything but is down on power and if you want more the only option is to supercharger witch is insane money if done at the dealer and they knowing this never made a model themselves to sell as a package.
@Carlos_Jzx
@Carlos_Jzx 7 лет назад
guy proulx What was I thinking right me sharing this with you. I guess all those people that do swaps on Runner are jerks for not buying the V8 model another thing you must not know jack about Runner's dew to the fact that that was the worst model ever built and adding that was a 1 and only type for it.
