Everyone has dreams, but some people are better at remembering them than others. Scientists aren't sure why we dream, but remembering them has a lot to do with the activity in your brain, and with how well you sleep.

@@hermitcard4494 I'm not a moron. I have PTSD from being abused my entire life, my brain makes me relive that abuse in my dreams and it hurts just as much as it did the first time. Don't belittle people's struggles just because you think your suffering is worse than theirs, it's not a competition. Even if you were the one person who has the worst problems in the world, you don't have to act as if everyone else's problems don't matter. Even small problems matter. Even if the worst nightmare I'd ever had was that I saw a snail and I didn't like it, I still have a right to complain about it.

And why do I clearly remember those nightmares that wake me up with a terrified jolt? I remember the dreams that are really terrifying or emotional the most clearly. The mood or tone of a really vivid dream can also stay with me throughout the following day or days, sometimes for a week or more. I can remember every detail of a dream I had decades ago about being murdered, including the terrible look in my killer's bright blue eyes. I'd love to wake up and not remember stuff like that.

I don't take SNRI. But I recently changed my anti-psychotic treatment, the new drug isn't suppose to mess with norepinephrine but my dreams became so vivid since ! They are usually quite pleasant so that's not a problem. Anyway this drug helps me a lot more with the psychotic "bursts" I can have, and also with the depressive, lack of pleasure, aspect. When I was around 7 years old I remember having a dream. I was a giant monster with about 8 arms and about 50 meters away there was a massive wooden totem pole like monster. We were inside a hollow square based pyramid like in Egypt. The big monster started to run towards me so I started shooting it with some liquid coming from all my arms. It wasn't working so I tried even harder at full force. I then suddenly woke up. Then I realised I was also peeing in real life. I still remember that after all those years. This took me the whole 5 minute video to type this XD

Some time ago I had this very vivid dream and just felt this urge to write it down, which was the first time I started to do so. Now, if I’ve had a vivid and interesting dream, I will write as much of it down as I can remember. Some aren’t as detailed as others, but I’ve had some incredibly detailed dreams that seem like epic movies I was watching rather than dreaming. Also, if I go back and read an old dream, I will still be be to picture that dream, even after months afterwards.

This is because if your brain thinks that it is in danger it starts to release norepinephrine which helps you to remember things. Think of how many days you have nightmares and divide it by total days in some period of time of your choice.

@N C It is like you remember that 4 out of 5 of your dreams are nightmares, so you may think that 80% of dreams are nightmares. But if you had 5 dreams in 100 days then you probably have only 4% of dreams as nightmares (assuming you remember every nightmare and dreams that you forgot are not nightmares).

They tell you this in the film, it's cortisol (alert and attention hormone), the stress hormone that fills your brain and replaces the norepinephrine (emotional and memory pathways). When you are getting ready for the day, especially if you're rushing, that cortisol stops your brain from logging it's recent memories. Hence the writing it down as soon as you can. I do it on my phone.

I wonder how emotions play into this, and if it's different for nightmares. One of the worst dreams I ever had wasn't that vivid, nor was it on a night I can particularly recall as being a bad night's sleep, yet I can remember what happened to this day when it occurred nearly 8 years ago. Similarly, I recall a dream where I saw the back of someone's head and the love I felt for that individual is still within me, yet I have no idea who they were (or who/what they represented) - and, again, that was many years ago. Dreams really are fascinating.

The superpower with dreaming is being able to lucidly dream; realizing you are dreaming and taking control of the dream. I'm about 50/50 on either steering the direction of my dream when I realize I am dreaming...or waking up and losing the plot of the dream. Since my wife died, its been much more of a heartache when I lose the dream...its the only time I get to see her, touch her, smell her anymore. :(

I'm only very rarely a player in my dreams. Usually I'm more of an _3-person observer,_ but sometimes I'm playing a different character, a unique individual with their own distinct personality & even memories - it's pretty damn weird whenever I wake up & recall one of _those_ dreams. Most of the time it's like I'm watching an extremely vivid & colourful, incredibly detailed, long narrative, though much more emotionally *_"real",_* intense & involving than a movie, or novel. The most incredible dream I ever had lasted for about *22 minutes* (+) ( _in the real world_ ), but duration of the narrative was over *2½ YEARS.* Waking up from that one was freaky: it honestly took me several hours to accept that it was only a dream & not some sort of weird _parallel universe/out-of-body experience_ thing - it felt just that *_"real"_* to me. I had to go & hug my mum. It felt wonderful to see her again. ( _especially as, in the dream, she was presumed dead in a meteor impact_ ) (+) I was able to work it out from memories of waking up earlier that morning ( _though not opening my eyes_ ), then going back to sleep & experiencing a dream so _surreal & amazing_ that I can still recall it after *20* freakin' years...

I got to a point where I remembered two to four dreams a night, and some of them were lucid. I can’t say anything for sure of course since it’s just my personal experience, but I think practice helps if you want to remember your dreams or even become a regularly lucid dreamer.

An emotional experience helping to make a dream more real or vivid. That explains something. My most vivid dream happened in regards to my father. He had died suddenly one night and I lived a few hundred miles away. We were not the closest of families, in that we talked every few months and I visited maybe twice a year. He had hugged me maybe a handful of times and only twice I can remember. Once before I left for college and oddly, the last time I actually did see him. We were not as connected as other families seem to be. When he died, I was not incredibly emotional, there were a couple of moments, but i was pretty numb. Even into the next month when my grandmother (his mother) died. Three months after he died, I was dreaming that I was cleaning the garage of the home I grew up in. When I saw my dad, I stopped what I was doing. I realized I was dreaming. We hugged. I told him I missed him and loved him. He told me he was proud of me and loved me. I woke up crying. Hard. I don't hold stock in dreams. I don't mind hearing about them from time to time, but when people are held captive by their dreams or place a lot of stock in them (or their prophetic psychic abilities) I tend to lose respect for them. I've lived around people who ascribe a lot of meaning to dreams...so, yeah. Nuts. However, that dream brought me some sense of closure and catharsis. I hold mostly that it was a dream, it was my brain, not my dad...but, some part of me, just hopes a little, that it could have been. But, highly emotional and it is quite a vivid memory for me.

Hey Hank! Great video, but I'm actually a sleep tech and I can say at least some of this is untrue. Sure, if you keep randomly waking, you will probably remember your dreams better... but so do people who sleep super soundly and rest fully! It is kind of a 50/50 split on whether or not someone remembers their dreams either during a study or when I ask them about their time at home. I have had people that spent a long time in REM and had these crazy dreams, and then people who don't even feel like they slept. I have had people that didn't hit REM at all (or they did and it was super broken; you can dream out of REM it's just more uncommon) and say they had crazy dreams, and people who said they didn't dream at all despite the broken REM. What I can tell you is that there are a ton of sleep issues out there and I recommend everyone get a sleep study at least once in their lives, just to see how it goes, because sleep is CRITICAL in affecting other health issues. If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea you want to get a new sleep study every 3-5 years to keep up with your CPAP pressure. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask me in the comments! I love the sleep videos because it gets this cool field out into the public. I will try to read them all but youtube is terrible with reply chains...

I also can remember what I say and do in my lucid dreams and about a week later they happen one time u saw something sitting in front of me that I knew was not there then I say "dream again" And it comes it's not there anymore my childhood fears were 🔥🔥🔥

This might be really long so I'm sorry but I wanted to share to see if anyone else has dreams as weird or messed up as some of mine have been . I lucid dream a lot and a lot of the time I remember my dreams as well. Sometimes. Or the memory will fade throughout the day. And sometimes when I'm invested too much into a video game I start to dream matching scenarios. So I don't play as often as my boyfriend does. I had to hold off on Skyrim, GTA, Code Vein, an the new Tomb Raider games for a long time. It also happens with movies, TV shows, and the places I go to all the time or have been to, so past and current jobs, old houses and apartments I lived in, schools I went to, etc. And they always merge into people, places, and things from my everyday life. And they can become terrifying and they're always realistic, it's just how they play out. I know none of these would ever happen of course but the details and everything are too real sometimes. They're also really nice sometimes too. Here are some examples: Two different nightmares as a young kid I remember were: A) walking into a dark living room crowded with furniture and people I knew being eaten by the furniture that had big teeth. B) being chased through my mobile home by an old lady who would spray misbehaved kids with a spray bottle that turned them into pb&j sandwiches. I almost made the jump over the fence. Recently that I can think of..... : A) being chased by the unknown monster (theorized corrupted Steven) from Steven Universe while I was at a pool with various people I know and knew. It was huge and everytime I see it now it gives me chills. I still love the show immensely. B) I was involved in a GTA _V bank heist throughout my school and it turned into a shootout where we had to secure all the classrooms which had all the teachers I remember instructing class. Then I had to clean my locker or I wouldn't get that NJROTC promotion from my commander, and the last piece of a chocolate cheesecake sampler. C) a Zombieland themed dream. Had to progress to certain checkpoints before I could get my boyfriend and watch a movie at the theater. D) a dream where I had to destroy xenomorphs and their eggs. Then it merged to my old neighborhood and I got to sell girl scout cookies. E) I had a scenario play out where I was a character from a mobile game my boyfriend and I play called Soul Knight and I was clearing out areas of enemies, and they slowly developed a darker tone and the surroundings too and it turned into a Code Vein setting and I kept dying and coming back to face a female boss who shot Staples from a stapler and fire balls at me. I ended up winning and running down the hall of our current mobile home. There are worse dreams I've had and better ones too. I've even had a couple of biblical dreams as well. The happiest dreams are when my deceased cat visits me. She looks and smells the same as she did before . And rarely my Mom will come visit me too. She passed away when I was little but I still remember her. I had another dream where I was gonna introduce her and my boyfriend. Never got to. I woke up.

This is me with my ex-bf. I've slept awful since I can remember - taking hours to fall asleep, waking up in the middle of the night, just all around a bad experience - but he just barely touches the pillow and he's already sleeping, for the whole night and wakes up refreshed and ready. But at least I have stories to tell about my crazy dreams, where we all die of mercury poisoning.

i always wondered about this! a lot of times i could TELL i had a super vivid dream but it just evaporates the moment i wake up. most nights i don't since i do sleep pretty well these days. during what i guess i call "second sleep" (when i wake up too early to get out of bed but not early enough to get too much more sleep) my dreams are always way more vivid. on the other side of the coin, my husband has periodic extremely long, very vivid dreams, especially during the days he has crashed out for most of the day. he has sleep apnea, and even though he is dead to the world on some nights (well, days. he's night shift) he's obviously not sleeping well even if he's sleeping longer, and those are times when he's forgotten to put on his mask.

I've always been good at remembering my dreams and have also continued dreams across the span of several nights. I have about 4 to 6 vivid and very specific dreams almost every night and often in the mornings I can remember at least a good gist of most of em or retain complete memory of some of them. This once I had exactly 6 or 7 dreams one night and woke up and could remember all of them in full detail and I blew my own mind although my smart assed self took no effort to write them down or anything so I forgot most within hrs. What really amazes me is that sometimes I'm in a dream and I get deja vu, or it's a made up setting I've dreamt of before but literally years back and I can recognise that I've been in the setting a very long time back. Sometimes my dreams reffer to other dreams I've had long back like theyre in the same dream universe. I always look forward to dreaming because it's absolutely fascinating to be in them, sometimes im semi aware that I'm dreaming for half a second and then consciously disregard that awareness because I'm afraid if I dwell on it I'll wake up. It's imp to mention here that im an INCREDIBLY light sleeper, all it takes is a few light knocks to wake me up and my sleep pattern is not very healthy most times ...my partner however dreams so rarely he insists he doesn't dream at all most nights, and he sleeps like a baby. Amazing how diverse the human brain is.

So, for a while there I was prescribed Venlafaxine Hydrochloride, an antidepressant, for Reasons. The side effects related to sleep and dreams were absolutely terrible. Dreams were more vivid and memorable, even if they were ridiculous. I would say I was even lucid dreaming at some points. The worst part however was how my brain would spit out recollections of the dream sequences during the day, as if it were an actual memory. It made parsing reality from imaginary very difficult, especially if the dream was fairly realistic itself. Now that I am no longer taking that particular medication, memories of all those dreams have faded, but they're still there. I definitely appreciate being able to wake up and not need 5 minutes to work out if what I'm imagining is real or not, though I've kept some ability to manipulate the dream sequences as I'm waking up. That is, as long as an alarm isn't doing the waking up for me!

What causes dreams, well things like mental health problems like anxiety sleep paralisis, and of course ptsd, and other things like watching to much tv especially before bed. And especially horror shows, i believe even eating to much junk before bed can also cause it, and also even being really excited or nervous about something can also cause it.

This explains why I usually remember dreams when I go to sleep when I'm drunk. While I do not realize that my sleep is shallow, nor do I feel any hangover when waking up (I don't drink that much). Btw. I also experienced lucid dreams. And those I remember with very high fidelity. Also, some dream scenes repeat. Places, people, events. But each time in new context. When dreaming I realize that I already had a specific dream and what last time happened. Also I sort of know what will happen next. The problem with lucid dreaming is that once I gain consciousness while dreaming, I usually wake up.

I always thought remembering my dreams depended on how close they are to the point where I wake up. It hasn’t happened lately but my most vivid dreams that I remember occurred when some outside stimulus triggered an event in my dream then waking up from it. This brings up another question. How does time work in dreams? The chances of the outside world coinciding with an event in a dream should be extremely rare. I don’t remember the specifics but I think I’ve had about half a dozen of these events in my adolescence.

I write down my dreams, and I generally get to write down at least one weird dream per year. I recall hearing that Salvador Dali would sleep with a spoon in one hand, and put a saucer beside himself. I've been lifted and dropped and flung around my bed, I've been yelled at and slathered with cold water and on and on I sleep. At absolute most the noises become background noises in my dreams. I remember most of my dreams and have written them down for years as they are so far out there. I am autistic and don't know if that contributes to it, but I have a very creative imagination and I do sleep well often. Just some examples of my unusual dreams. I am writing a book about them as with many I remember a lot of details about them. 1) I was a "Action Man" type character in the original thunderbirds style world, being chased by men in frog suits at dusk. 2) I was in a woman's house when her husband, Shere Khan (Tiger from The Jungle Book) came home and ordered me to leave threatening me with a "hug" and his deep growly voice. 3) I was a soldier fighting the French in some sort of French revolution in the 17 or 1800s and getting attacked and seeing priests getting drunk in a forest 4) I had another dream where I was a movie director in 50s or 60s and was being chased around and shot at by a man in a cowboy outfit . The man was playing a character in the movie I was directing. 5) Also once I distinctly remember my dream being in a different language than English. It was all in French and I was reading and talking in French and could understand what people were saying and so far it's the only dream I remember in a different language besides English. I have studied French language on and off for years and know quite a bit so that could be to do with it.

im just going to take this moment to tell you all about a dream i had about mermaid dora the explorer. I was around 6 when I dreamt this, about 6-7 years later, I still remember it. I was in the ocean with Dora, next to a rock similar to the one in The Little Mermaid, when Ariel jumps onto it and her hairs flowing and stuff. Doras wearing a crown. She then grabs a crown from.... somewhere and gives it to me. I take it and look at it for a bit. It’s gold and looks incredibly generic. I put it on, and just as I was about to go down and explore the ocean, I woke up. Still mad to this day.

The most surreal experience I’ve had during a dream was listening to a non-existent song my subconscious mind literally pulled out of its ass and I thought to myself inside the dream, “I should probably write this down. I won’t remember it when I wake up.” And so my dream self started writing down the song lyrics and I immediately woke up. I can’t remember the song. This same thing happened to me again, actually. I was watching the TV in my dream and there was this commercial for a new anime or something that had to do with ice skating and a score board and I thought to myself, while recalling the previous dream in which this happened, “I should write this down. This is a cool idea and I don’t want to forget it when I wake up.” I actually remembered every detail of that dream.

Sorry, this one is waaayyy off. There's a compound called FOSB that your brain produces in neurons that control the permanence of memory. The compound isn't generated during REM sleep because your brain knows it doesn't need to remember what's going on. Which is why you don't remember dreams as the memories aren't "recorded" as such. As in most things related to being human there's a spectrum of variation of people that are more to less inclined to remembering dreams. Some people's brains will produce more FOSB during REM sleep and some will produce less. Most people won't remember dreams at all unless they wake up in the middle of the dream and the brain hasn't had an opportunity to clean up after itself. This is also responsible for a phenomenon called "highway hypnosis" where you don't remember driving a long stretch of road. It's not that you were asleep or anything like that, your brain just didn't record any of it because it wasn't important. If your brain runs out of the raw materials for FOSB during a particularly intense experience or when it's affected by drugs, it can start producing what's called a 'truncated variant' of FOSB called Delta-FOSB. It's this truncated variant that is responsible for a variety of conditions ranging from addiction, to Stockholm Syndrome, to PTSD. The Delta-FOSB makes the neuron it's attached to more sensitive to dopamine initially which makes your brain want to repeat whatever activity the neuron was created in association with. This results in the phenomenon called "triggering" like a sensory input that triggers PTSD or an input that causes intense addiction related cravings. It makes your brain want to repeat the pattern that is associated with the affected neurons ie. engage in the addiction, or replay the traumatic experience. The way to remember dreams is to replay as much as you can remember of the dream after you wake up so that you create NEW memories of you remembering the details of the dream before the dream details fade. A common method suggested to assist in the recall of dreams is to keep a notebook at bedside and write down everything you can recall when you wake up. Unless you're a mutant, the memories of the REM period will fade and there's nothing you can do about it.
