There is no country that can be fully sustained by solar energy alone. It's impossible with today's technology.

So? Don’t do solar? Losers mentality! Winners is like Nike. Just do it!

Need to ask more details. 1. So what is the ave power generated per sqm of solar (per year or per month) - this shows what's feasible rather than taking it at face value that "there is no land" 2. What is the ave power consumption per household 3. What prevents deployment over road infrastructure, and as many hdb/gov owned land and buildings as dual use

The s'pore govt has done its best to go green and sustainable, given the limitations. Those who keep whining about the govt not doing enough are just too naive and ignorant.

Is it cost effective to install solar panels on all/most of our HDB flats rooftops ? We could also revise our BCA guidelines to compel commercial properties (new/existing) to reserve rooftop/exterior walls to cater to solar panels installations?

Why not Nuclear power? There are Small modular Reactors that can produce 300Mw a few of these installed on floating vessels could alleviate the issue.

Singapore needs to think out of the box and develop it's wave energy technology. Wave energy is abundant, reliable and ever-present.

Which is why the government is looking at that through the Punggol Reservoir as another green technology hub will be built there. And a small modular nuclear reactor built offshore to harness 10% of electricity needs from fission by 2050.

that is a pipedream if china/india/usa/europe with so much resources and scientist cannot develop wave energy, why do you think singapore can we have too little people

We Sarawakian will supply Singapore with all the green electricity as much as possible, Singapore Energy Market Authority and Sarawak Ministry of Utilities and Energy reach agreements on that just last week

how about power generation from falling rain, floods, Tpv photovoltaics, wind , thin/transparent solar films, perovskites, etc

Can do what Indians are doing in India? All people (landed house, Warehouses etc, Apartments et) need to fix solar panels on roof top and sell to grid, what happens is, All the energy will move to grid and anyone can use, end of the month when bill comes Electricity we sold to grid is deducted from used energy and have pay for rest .. for ex. In my home in India, We produce around 5kw, and our usage is 3kw, technically we get paid from Govt. Or in peak summer we never pay anything even though with peak usage

I think solar is just a scapegoat. Its inefficient and expensive. Nuclear maybe the option for us.

Hydrogen could be okay if recent claims of 95% efficient electrolysis come to market. Of course, this ignores the energy cost of compression or liquification and transport, and the efficiency of fuel cells. One must also look to what kind of power source is used to produce the hydrogen. If it's just burning natural gas, coal or some petroleum product, then all you're doing is deferring your emissions to your supplier's country -- which would be a rather dishonest interpretation of achieving net-zero emissions. I still think nuclear remains the best source of baseline power. A country like Singapore must still import fuel and export what little waste it produces, but modern reactors are safe, pretty efficient -- and they produce a heck of a lot of electricity. EDIT: I like that point at the end. The greatest form of environmentalism is conservation and reduction, not simply transition.

actually why not combine solar PV + CSP? we can also use CSP for thermal desalination solving our water problem! gahmen notice moi fat cat avatar and dun mind cash reward for brilliant idea!

Question. Is the problem that solar is not a very efficient source? Meaning one solar panel outputs very little. Is someone looking at how to multiply the output from existing solar farms?
@jnguyen424
@jnguyen424 Год назад
It's more of a land space issue. Though even if there was enough land, solar generates power during sun hours so there still needs an alternate solution for night time periods to displace gas.

Build solar farms upwards using mirrors to direct sunlight indoors. Maximise surface area like villi in the small intestine. If I were in charge, I'd explore building the tallest solar farms that are light and can go above cloud covers

I'd imagine the cost and impracticality of this will outweigh the benefits.

I am not sure what are the cost implication of sticking solar cells 4.5m over the highways all over SG, would that make a dent then? By that way even if some solar cells are blocked by clouds other regions would still be able to generate energy.

Singapore should deploy solar+batteries every where it could. Don’t listen to naysayers “can not lar can not lar… “ my experience told me: Those people usually are losers in life. How many so call expert said iPhone will be a failure and people need a physical keyboard for the phone? If Steve Jobs listened to them we will be still using Blackberry okay?

almost all the hdb already have solar.. where else you want to put if perovskites (low weight, high energy, flexible) are developed in the future, maybe we can deploy them in the roads but it is not realistic right now

Nobody said you have to be 100% solar. Singapore should keep deploy solar+battery +IT to every inch that’s needed and focus on reducing fossil fuels usage.
