I'd argue Cartoon network not having a mascot makes sense considering that they specialize in you know making cartoons, you wouldn't want to push a single franchise so having a different mascot (or mascots) every era is the best option
Yeah I think that makes the most sense, each era of the network is so identifiable and having one face take over the whole network could lead to some cartoons not getting as much attention from the network
This video was pointless because if you were a true Cartoon Network fan you would know that teen titans go is Cartoon Network mascot longest running show on the network and makes the most money
CN is kind of like Playstation where their mascot changes depending on the era. They aren't like Nick or Nintendo where they have one prominent face all the time, they tend to have a selection of popular IPs during every era that are all basically mascots together
I feel confident to say that Playstation mascot is Kratos. he wasn't there in the PS1, but since PS2 he have been the face of playstation, his franchise is the most prominent of the brand and his games is the biggest of each system it released in.
@@banjo9158kratos is definitely PlayStations unofficial mascot, but it’s the same type of thing as powerpuff girls being a mascot. Been around forever, highly loved and well known. Also both badass!
Maybe the Flintstones or Johnny Bravo? Dexter or Courage The Cowardly Dog or the Powerpuff Girls? Maybe later on it was Teen Titans Go or Regular Show? Or the Toonami guy. Although, Toonami wasn’t always with CN / Adult Swim. I don’t think, but idr all that well.
Your not wrong but I’d say bugs is the mascot of Warner brothers as a whole. Not necessarily of Cartoon Network. Bugs was created far before Cartoon Network was even an idea, it’s almost like how Disney owns marvel but you wouldn’t say marvels mascot is Mickey Mouse you know? You’re not completely wrong though I get where you’re coming from!
I keep calling The Powerpuff Girls, Ben 10 and Adventure Time as CN’s “Big Three”, and maybe they can fit as mascots for the three different eras in which they debuted in, but I don’t think any of them fit as a mascot to the entire channel. They just don’t represent nearly enough. I agree with the idea that Cartoon Network doesn’t need a mascot. Like, the CN City bumpers had it exactly right. - “This is Cartoon Network.” and they show us all the cartoons living peacefully together.
Everything you said is perfect. The network represented more than just one face, it was a community of cartoons and creators that were all incredible in their own ways. Perfectly said man
I actually had a similar idea that PPG, Ben 10 and AT are the big 3 but for me it was the big 4 because I added OK K.O. To the list because it of its crossovers
I’ve always considered Dexter and Scooby Doo to be pseudo mascots of CN given how much they were used for promotions and ad breaks during the 90s and early 2000s. Scooby was even made President of the channel for a couple of years.
My guess is that CN didn't want to bother having one after a few attempts and rather let the characters and shows speak for themselves...... Disney Channel is part of the larger Disney fold, hence Mickey was bound to represent the channel in some way or form while Nickelodeon homegrown pretty much everything and naturally let the decision fall onto how things fold out.... CN however is interesting as even before Moxie, they had that Jester character that appeared in certain promotional materials and bumps but never caught on.
Yeah this makes the most sense. Cartoon network tried to force one with moxy and ended up making people like him even less, but in the end didn’t really need a mascot afterall, which works better for us because Nickelodeon plays nothing but SpongeBob while Cartoon Network still has a decent schedule
In my mind, Dexter has always been the mascot of Cartoon Network. CN's website had him as its icon in the 90s/early 00s. And Dexter's angular design along with his white lab coat and black shoes matched CN's original logo really well, which was black and white and rectangular. Even long after the channel stopped airing Dexter's Laboratory, I still considered him the mascot. I mean, Disney doesn't have to make more Mickey Mouse cartoons, or air Mickey Mouse on Disney Channel for you to know that Mickey is the mascot of Disney Channel. Like Mickey, Dexter came and made his mark, and the CN logo will always echo Dexter for me, just like how the mouse-head silhouette from Disney will always echo Mickey.
Yeah I can see what you mean, that’s a pretty good point. It’s just been a while since they’ve actually shown his face on the network outside of adult swim and anniversary bumpers. But you are right, the black and white does remind people of dexter
Teen titans is closer to their mascot, show has been running for over a decade and isn’t stopping anytime soon. Before that…Ed Edd N eddy was their longest running show. TTG is very popular for the network and very popular with kids. Powerpuff girls is CN’s rugrats..it was their first flagship brand in late 90s to early 00s that led to more flagship brands like adventure time in 2010s and now TTG.
I personally didn’t include the teen titans because those characters had to be licensed from DC Comics to Cartoon Network despite WB owning them both. But they aren’t the networks characters but I do agree that if they were, then they would 100% be the mascot because of how much the network spams them. Ed Edd n eddy is a really good pick, they definitely were the face at one point!
@@jayjaybulldog9180 TTG is very popular with kids. Kids don’t know the shows we watched on CN,if they do they’re a minority. TTG was also hate watched when it premiered so that helped it grow. TTG is the most popular TT incarnation. Even made more money than the original 80s comics and definitely made more money than the 2003 reboot show.
100% true and I love all of those different eras mascots, but I was more referring to having a character be the face of the network similar to how Nick has SpongeBob and Disney has Mickey
@@ChildishjuIn all fairness, Mickey is the beginning of Disney and therefore important to the Disney company and the sponge was just a runaway success that never failed to remain relevant even generations of children later. Even as I’m damn near 30 years old, the sponge still sells merchandise and remains forever recognizable. I’m not sure if that was something anyone predicted would happen.
@@Childishju id argue that sorta changed recently. its not as bad as Nick where its literally just the spongebob channel and Mickey basically got grandfathered in as the mascot because he was the studios creators creation. but theres no denying current CN spams Teen Titans Go and Amazing World Gumball to quite an excessive degree. id actually argue Disney has the most variety these days and their mascot really doesn't have much of a preances on the network as i said he's pretty much just their mascot because he's always been the mascot of Disney even outside of the Disney Channel;
I agree. Because Mickey Mouse has been Disney's mascot for 100 years, he is the most overrated cartoon character while at the same time there are many Disney's underrated characters, for example Tod and Copper (The Fox and The Hound 1981) and Oliver (Oliver and Company 1988).
@@LisekTod True, Mickey is so boring he's not even as good as his friends Donald and Goofy who have their own personality. whats Mickeys personality ummm he's nice i guess....his personality is he's nice.
Powerpuff Girls and Adventure Time have the same case that SpongeBob and Avatar and Mario and Zelda has Although Adventure Time, Avatar and Zelda have large followings for their complex stories and characters Ppg, SpongeBob and Mario simply have more brand appeal Finn, Jake, Aang and Link aren’t always the focus of the stories in their respective series Therefore can’t really be considered mascots for their brands
What a great way to put it. Really good examples man, the more simple shows have better brand appeal while the more complicated stories are loved in their own way. I agree
For Adult Swim's mascot, it often jumbles between Shake, Space Ghost or Rick. For Shake, there were a handful of AS bumpers that involved him bickering about what's on his mind. (What Would I Do For Cash, Shake's Perfect Day, and Love Song are three that come to mind.) He also had a walk around costume seen in bumpers and also appeared at the Colon Movie premiere, so I'd say he's the closest. Space Ghost was the first AS show and practically the godfather of the block, plus made a few appearances in other AS shows. (ATHF, Brak Show, Perfect Hair Forever) It would make sense for him to be the block's mascot, but the one thing halting this is because the show is actually very niche. For Rick, he's a definite answer since R&M is the most popular show on the block. He's the first character that comes to mind when you think AS, and has enough merchandise to fill the masses.
Okay I didn’t even think of adult swims mascot, I think you just gave me another video idea. And if I make that video , I’ll make sure to give you credit! But I agree for sure
Adventure Time is my fave and is a show I hold above all others in my heart. Yet, I would say The Powerpuff Girls deserve to be the true face and mascot of CN as a whole.
I'd compare Dexter more to Ren and stimpy on Nickelodeon, they became the first global hit of their networks but then Ren and Stimpy started to lose steam and rugrats was gaining more popularity, the same could be said to dexter and Powerpuff girls.
If I’m a be honest, the true mascots were Finn and Jake adventure time hit at the time. They are one of the most recognizable cartoon characters of the modern generation era of the 2010s.
Having grown up with Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, and Cartoon Network I was surprised that Cartoon Network didn't have a mascot like how Nickelodeon has Spongebob and Disney Channel has Mickey Mouse representing the channels. I love that Cartoon Network doesn't have a mascot as it shows that all of its shows from over the years represents what it truly is. A channel focused on making cartoons and that speaks loudly for the channel itself with how much they've been able to give shows a chance with being brought to life. Even though things have changed nowadays with Cartoon Network to where things weren't like they once were the past is still there with the fans who grew up with those shows and the impact that Cartoon Network had on its viewers.
I think it's because CN wants to have different tone each decade Dexter Lab and Power Puff Girls started the 1st age and Adventure Time and Regular Show started the 2nd if it wasn't for different corporations buying Warner and Streaming age there probably be Cartoon setting up the tone 2020's at CN there all a catalyst to what's to come for there respective era
I completely agree, every different era of the network has its own unique style and tone that is identifiable to that time period. Each decade had its own culture but the 2020 era sadly won’t because streaming and such. Great observation
@@HeySamus33Toonami still plays on Adult Swim on Saturday into Sunday nights though. What do you mean cancelled? It’s not what it used to be, for sure, I’m sad about it, too, especially when I returned to the block just to see what it’s like in 2020s, but it’s still there. They just aired Ninja Kamui as one of their exclusives that is later dropped on MAX. There’s still a few familiar Toonami faces like Naruto and One Piece. Now DS as well. Then, there’s Lycoris Recoil and a few weird American looking animations I don’t recognize. It’s not what it was. Rip InuYasha’s 4:30am slot. It ends at only 2:30am-ish. Or was it 2am? It’s back to airing later than when MHA temporarily convinced the block to air earlier at like 9:30pm or 10pm. Still, Toonami still chugs along in 2024 just barely. Sometimes the loss of tv era does seem a tragedy (even if tv and cable was a pain). We used to come together on so many shows that just doesn’t seem to happen as much anymore. It’s a shame the new gens may not experience that.
Wouldn’t Scooby Doo be considered a mascot given how his shows are often either reran or exclusive to the channel and how often he was used as a promotional tool up until the early 2000s? I remember he was made President of CN for a couple of years, he was in a lot of the commercial bumps that aired during ad breaks, and there was a contest that gave away a life sized build of him made entirely of Lego long before the company made official sets of Scooby and his friends.
I get why you’d say Scooby, but I didn’t include him because he existed long before the network did. I would say he represented boomerang more than Cartoon Network just like the other hannabarbara characters
ben is such a cool character. i personally voted for gumball on the poll but thats just because when i think cn i think gumball, both are goated characters, but gumball just feels more "cartoon network" to me, or at least current cartoon network
Hmm maybe The Powerpuff Girls are the mascots of Cartoon Network and Disney Junior was Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Princess Sofia and Doc McStuffins
Ppg doesnt have a huge appeal either, yes its famous but its mostly targetted towards girls, definitely boys to but most boys like me are very embarrassed to watch it, thats why the ppg movie failed Its finn and jake, everyone loves that show
Considering how CN starting off as a rerun channel, it would make sense to have the mascot for the channel be either Bugs Bunny, Tom & Jerry or even Fred Flintstone, I can't consider the OG CN characters as mascots since they come and go
I can understand that take. Personally I don’t view bugs or Fred as the mascot because they existed way before Cartoon Network was thought of. I’d say bugs is Warner brothers mascot but not cartoon networks. Almost like how bugs is Warner brothers mascot but he isn’t the mascot of DC despite Warner brothers owning it. But I can understand choosing one of the classic characters:)
I enjoyed this video, just some concrit, if you could isolate and make your voice clearer in the mix it would really make the videos cleaner! I look forward to see what else you’ll put out
I genuinely appreciate your critiques, you’re completely right. My voice is very muffled in most of my videos but I have recently purchased a new microphone and I will be investing in new equipment and a laptop so I can raise the quality of my videos. Also I have to work on my line delivery as well, sometimes I feel like I’m flat when I speak. So there are definitely steps I need to take to better this channel. I appreciate your honesty, content will improve soon!
@@Childishju I think you’re doing a great job and I’ve learned a lot of info from your videos so I really appreciate the fact that you put your time and effort into this. When I have some steady income I’ll definitely be throwing it your way, good luck with the new microphone and don’t worry, your delivery will get more comfortable the more you speak! I personally like that you don’t sound like some cartoon commentators who go a little too far with their persona and voice. Just watched your new video on rugrats, you’re killing it dude!
@@user-ki1xj5fl1i I really appreciate this, it means a lot. Probably the kindest and most helpful comments I’ve ever received. You’ve inspired me to make the best content of my abilities. And don’t worry about giving any money I’m just glad to have entertained you at all :).
I personally see Cartoon Network having a mascot shifting depending on the era, just like Playstation. For example: 1. Either Dexter or Space Ghost during the early 90s. 2. The Powerpuff Girls during the late 90s and early 2000s. 3. Ben 10 during the mid to late 2000s. 4. Finn and Jake during the early 2010s 5. The TTG since 2015 On side note, I would say this also somewhat applies to Adult Swim as well, just not as much as CN. The Aqua Teen Hunger Force trio were clearly the faces of Adult Swim throughout the 2000s, but since 2014 that position has been given to Rick and Morty.
In my heart it will always be the Cartoon Cartoons, even if they aren't the big thing now. But not exactly just one of them, more of a hierarchy or protagonist lineup of sorts, like how Cartoon Cartoon Fridays, the bumpers, and FusionFall did it. Dexter, Dee Dee, and the PowerPuff Girls are at the very front, even if it's not _just_ them like I said. They're endearingly adorable, badass heroes, as well as funny and relatable when it comes to who they are as people. Not to mention, the two are already canonically in the same universe, so it makes sense that they're tied-for-first. Ed Edd and Eddy(my personal favorites alongside Dexter) are the outsiders, who aren't really heroes at all, but aren't villains either. They kind of serve the same purpose they do in their own show, only in crossovers and the mascot lineup, they aren't ostracized and aren't constantly getting karmic misfortunes thrashed upon them. Eddy in particular acts as the channel's big anti-hero; Fitting that Ed and Edd also act as his brawn-and-brains henchmen/sidekick duo role-wise, though they're more even and mutual with him than other examples of the trope. Johnny Bravo is the all-rounder wild-card type. Besides the whole incel thing, the other major part of his show's whole appeal is that he can be in any situation and he'll still act like himself, which I'd say is part of what makes a mascot work. Though, I find it odd how he's usually the only one from his show who's ever featured, even more than Courage is. Like, at least include Bunny, Carl, Pops or Suzy _sometimes,_ come on! Courage is the heart, underdog, and the literal dog. While he also does exceptional heroic things, of course, he doesn't solve those issues like superheroes do; he often just has to save his owners, not the whole world, and obviously he's often scared of what he's up against(he's brave, just not fearless; those are really two vastly different attributes). In particular, I've always appreciated how he almost never kills or otherwise 'defeats' anything that threatens him, and tries to instead be constructive and pacifist whenever he can, like outsmarting them, beating them at a competition or sorting out any deep-rooted issues that caused them to act the way they did. He's just a good guy, and also an adorable anthropomorphic dog, it's great. Grim, Billy and Mandy are kind of like the CC equivalent to Ashley in WarioWare, or Invader Zim in Nickelodeon's lineup. The show that has horror elements, but isn't horror like Courage is. That awesome, spooky, I guess "Tumblr/Hot Topic aesthetic" style. Cynical and snarky, in that likeable way. Except for Billy, he's just... Billy. Samurai Jack is the serious, no-nonsense one. Quiet, calculated, and gets things done. Also may or may not be Professor Utonium's alternate universe counterpart with a sword. Also Cow, Chicken, Weasel, and I.R. Baboon are there, too, I guess. I like Weasel, at least, especially his voice and attitude. But I'll still say I think they're pretty overhated in terms of general fan feedback, I'd say. (Plus, don't kill me, but I actually like them more than Ren & Stimpy. And hey, least _their_ creator isn't a creepy, horrible bastard!) I even like the less popular ones of the lineup, like Time Squad, Mike Lu & Og, and Sheep in the Big City. I think they're underrated gems. The real practical mascot is really Gumball, Finn and Jake, C & N, the Noods/Toonix, or PowerPuffs and Dexter alone though, regardless of my own preference. I just wanted an excuse to talk about how much I love the Cartoon Cartoons as a lineup ensemble, really.
This was genuinely one of my favorite comments I’ve read on the channel. There’s so much to unpack, you descriptions for the role you think every character played in being the driving force of the network perfectly explains the essence of the network. Every cartoon had a major play in the networks popularity, while not every cartoon was the most popular, they were all important and anyone could make solid cases for any one of them to be the mascot. But I think Cartoon Network and its characters as a community are the heart of the network, all of them together make Cartoon Network what it is. Unlike SpongeBob for Nickelodeon. I actually recently made a video for cartoon cartoon Fridays I recommend checking out, but there’s something about every cartoon cartoon lifting each other up that makes Cartoon Network itself so special. Great comment!
@@Childishju Thank you so much! I was kind of hesitant to post almost, since I thought it would be too much information off-topic to the video, but I'm thankful I didn't. I'll be sure to watch that, thank you for telling me! I'm very happy that you went into detail with your response, by the way, that amount of honesty and detail when it comes to feedback means so much more to me than just a "great job". That's part of why my last-namesake praises are often detailed and/or involve creative exercises and brainstorms like this.
Actually cartoon network indulged a lot in adventure time, adventure time merchendise alone made over 400 million dollars, and mutiple movies were planned but cancelled
The Powerpuff Girls Movie came out the same year as Jonah A VeggieTales Movie, which was also an adaptation of a children's cartoon series and a failure that cancelled projects.
This’ll be a sentimental answer, since I grew up in the 90s, but I think every Cartoon Cartoon star is a mascot in their own right. It wasn’t just the Eds, Dexter, Powerpuffs, Johnny Bravo, Courage, KND, any of them. It was all of them. All the bumpers with them crossing over, Cartoon Cartoon Fridays, all of it was a community and the world felt like an actual world. But if I had to pick a mascot, like, give them one- I’d probably choose either Bugs Bunny or Scooby Doo. Both are enduring legacy characters with big ties to both Warner Brothers and Cartoon Network. My bias choice is Scooby since I love Scooby Doo, but I can’t deny how big a character Bugs is.
I agree with your take on PowerPuff girls being the mascot face of Cartoon Network however Ben 10 is still up there as the second face because when you really think about it, the franchise still to this day is being remembered fondly with TONS of RU-vid fan videos, fan drawings, merchandise and reboots. For example when you go to the Cartoon Network hotel, they had a bunch of not just PowerPuff girls but also Ben 10 representations inside and outside along side adventure time to which have some representation for the brand.
@@Childishju Also I think that the reason why the PPG movie flunked in the box office was because it was released too soon while others such as men in black, hey Arnold the movie and the wild thornberrys movie was released prior in 2002 and that it should’ve released on a separate month to raise more box office stock.
@@Childishju Also I think the reason to why PPG movie flunked in the box office was because it was released too soon in the summer of 2002 due to men in black 2 and Hey Arnold the movie was released prior. Maybe if they had released the movie in later months it would’ve succeeded much larger.
Adventure Time and Steven Universe might’ve lost out on being later on in the tv era. When people were moving towards streaming more and leaving tv schedules behind. Still, later on, in the time of my young nieces, nephews, and young child cousins, it appeared Teen Titans Go had taken over the channel and become all that was aired kinda like SpongeBob eventually became.
Yeah streaming kinda changed the way people watched and definitely cut adventure time and Steven’s run short. And yeah your niece and nephew are technically right, teen titans go did take over the network lol
Cartoon Network doesn't have a mascot cause they always marketed their shows as a collective package rather the show is on their main channel Adult swim or boomerang rather through promos,The CN city or The Jingle Bell song commercial etc
Uhhhhhhhh….. I guess itz bloo of the 2000’s. I don’tknow, I seen him a lot. Along with his creator Mac, they were popular guys in the 2000’s and they hosted many summer related stuff at that time. :P
Fellow Foster's Home fan in the comments, that show is underrated And yeah, Bloo was even essentially the de facto channel mascot in the YES era, even if it was Fred Fredburger who gave it the name
I'd also argue that Space Ghost, Zorak, and Brak were the unofficial mascots of Cartoon Network during its golden era (1995-2003). Think about it. Without Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, we wouldn't have the Cartoon Cartoons, Toonami, even Adult Swim.
Hey great point, I agree with you. These were very needed characters. But I dont think space ghost ever got the people behind him like some of the networks other options have
Good question, I would consider bugs more of a WB mascot as a whole. He represents the entire company but he was made far before Cartoon Network even existed so I don’t think he is the face of the network personally
No matter how you define mascot, you know if all three of the big ones are pulling up mafia style its gonna be Bugs, Mickey and SpongeBob holding the briefcases
They've had mascots, just not in the traditional sense. I'd say any main character from their flagship shows could count as a mascot (they essentially served as a unit of mascots in the Cartoon Cartoon era), though they had OCs to represent programming blocks more often than the whole network (TOM for Toonami, Erin and her alien friends for Miguzi, Pipoca and Henderson for Tickle U, the fat kid for Super Chunks), the Noods and Any Malu from CN Latin America are the only exceptions to that I've seen.
8:50 Honestly, it would have been better if Warner Media (owners of Cartoon Network and The CW) dumped the "CN Real" stuff to The CW 4Kids so Cartoon Network wouldn't have its purpose defeated and continue doing its own thing to be unique from the other cable networks. I mean, Kids' WB and The CW 4Kids didn't have enough live-action programming to begin with, but if that happened, these Warner Media-owned programming blocks would have a bigger and better variety. Even Bobb'e Says is perfect E/I material since it's like AFV, but with an educational twist.
I actually like the idea of having each decade era of CN having its own mascot. For 90s, I think The Powerpuff Girls would be a good fit. For the 2000s (as a whole), I would choose Ben 10, for the 2010s, I would pick Adventure Time, and for the 2020s I would choose Craig of the Creek.
@@Childishju me too. And while the show came out in 2018, I’d argue that it really started to boost in popularity and honestly carried CN throughout most of the 2020/current decade. I know Teen Titans Go is a popular show on the network but I argue that it fits more in line with it being the mascot of DC/WB animation since teen titans (in general) is a dc property not a CN original.
I think a factor is the Mickey Mouse has been around since the 20s, and SpongeBob’s been running since ‘99, but no Cartoon Network show has that sort of immortality, even if the big 3 are still pop culture staples to this day
I'm glad they don't nickelodeon in particular became so obsessed with spongebob that if a show couldn't compete with it, a once in a blue moon huge success immediately than they kill it off quick
They were pushing ben 10 alot back in the day, and adventure time throughout the 2010s, I always thought of dexter and the powerpuff girls as the mascots.
While all these are great candidates for the mascot of Cartoon Network, you missed 2 big ones that were there since the beginning, and has been rebooted many times as well:- Looney Tunes and Scobby Doo/Mystery Inc.
All fantastic choices but I was trying to to aim for characters that were created by the network. It’s my fault for not making that clear but these are still great choices!
Adventure Time is the best show ever, I think if they had a mascot it would be either Finn or Jake because they both are the main characters of the show + they have the most iconic cartoon designs.
Interesting choice, I do think they are one of the most iconic cartoons from the network. (Ps, Fiona and Cake was incredible and I will be making a video eventually)
@@Childishju Awe heck yeah!!! Fionna and cake is amazing. Will you also mention the wholesome relationship with Gary and Marshall? I love hearing people talk about them!
Spongebob is definitely considered Nickelodeon's Channel Mascot but there a problem: Overxplotation of Series Cartoon Network. goodly that not use some of characters from his original series for being Channel Mascot and overexploted.
lol I did love me some cow and chicken but I wasn’t born when it was airing on the network. I watched it on boomerang as a kid. I personally preferred it over ren and stimpy
For me: The Cartoon Network (Company): Rick And Morty or Powerpuff Girls CN: Adventure Time or Powerpuff Girls AS: Rick And Morty or Aqua Teens Toonami: Tom and Sara
@Childishju he was another I thought of yeah. 55 years and still going strong. But yeah they've kind of always used group shots to promote the Network. They had the era where all the characters worked in an office building, then the CN city era, they had animations of everyone at the movies for their TV movies. Just lots of letting all their characters hang out together.
tbh nickelodeon didnt have one either.... its only relatively recently that spongebob has kinda become that i believe only nick jr had that one face thing for some time Cn always was marketed as " a place for cartoons " so i dont think that would work if they had one but since theyve made a hard shift and are kinda hanging on by a thread now ...ttg has become its spongebob and is probably the thing id liken most to being a psudo mascot i guess even tho i dont like it
