Chris Lilley's new show 'Lunatics' fails as a comedy, fails as a drama and fails even as a bland Netflix original.
In this classic NitPix review, I look at the work of Australian comedian Chris Lilley. From 'We Can Be Heroes', to 'Summer Heights High', to 'Angry Boys', 'J'amie Private School Girl' and 'Jonah From The Tonga'.
His new characters; Keith Dick; Becky Douglas; Gavin McGreggor; Jana Melhoopen-Jonks; Joyce Jeffries and Quentin Cook are as dynamic, funny and interesting as the likes of S.Mouse or Ricky Wong. Though he has had popularity with Mr G and J'amie, when Lilley is not allowed to be casually racist or flippantly homophobic, his attempts at shock humour are juvenile and turgid.

I have to say... "How is this Racist/Homophobic?" Have you been to Australian School? I have not seen his new show because frankly I do not find the Man funny. I have only seen Summer Heights high. But Racist? Homophobic? How??? Its Comedy -_- Why isnt any of the White characters he plays "Racist"? Im so sick of this "Wah wah racism wah wah homophobia." Hes a COMEDIAN. Not even a good one in my opinion... but a COMEDIAN. When you start taking comedic skits seriously and applying them to actual life. You are fucked up lol... Is Comedy the genre SERIOUSLY having to "pass your standard" of offence now? I was born in Communist Russia. Let speech and art, including Comedy be free. Ok Josef?

This is strange, it comes off to me as reading into things that were never meant to be super intelligent & deep comedy. Every single character, from every single Chris Lilley show, has been based around a single exaggerated trait. Pretending this is a new aspect is just wrong. It's like you just wanted to say that you don't find Chris Lilley funny, which is fine, but all the talking about 'problematic' & 'offense' seems like after the fact justification for a video that wasn't really neccessary at all.

The fact that this video is being centred around lunatics, which is arguably chris lilleys least "problematic" show is a tell. Why wait until a flub in his career to join the bandwagon in calling him problematic? I agree, chris lilleys work is surface level comedy, that's what he is going for.

I suspect that this was a consequence of netflix restricting creative liberty. You also have to take into account that Chris is appealing to an Australian audience to which different humor standards are held and that the reliability of each character is based on the Australia experience. Coming from public schooling in Australia i cant even begin to tell you how accurate summer hights high is.
@Eg9yBoy
@Eg9yBoy 5 лет назад
And in the case of his use of black face, its a progressive tool used by Chris to highlight that the stereotypes existing among these individuals are more a product of their environment and not their race, it allows us to sympathies with those whom he might be portraying (with the exception of S.mouse). Not saying they arnt over exaggerated but ive definitely been called a ranga a few times by Maori individuals in year 7 and seen drama teachers bitch about the funding towards sport programs. Black face can be done tastefully

MDE Presents: World Peace was a show that contrasted absurd characters with realistic, improvisational actors very well. Absurdist characters wore ridiculous costumes that broke any possible illusion of them actually fitting in; the improvisational actors were very reserved. This put central focus on the attention-grabbing absurdists, although the improvisers were important characters to the story of each sketch so they didn't feel tacked on. I guess it was a Brechtian thing. World Peace was also a very anti-PC show, but it looks good and it's fucking funny. For an example of what I mean, look up the break up sketch.
@yumcha16
@yumcha16 5 лет назад
Your missing the point of Chris lily's humour. He's all observational of the world around him and he put it into an exaggerated form in his characters. I don't know if it's because I'm Australian and it doesn't translate well overseas or Somthing else. But when you see each of the characters you Instantly think of somone you know in real life. He has a way of picking up the little subtleties in human persona you think mostly goes ignored. In this series he's portraying some of the people you see and may have little interaction with in your life. he delves into a possible scenario of what their life might be like (in an exaggerated form). The whole series is to to make people aware and have compasion and understanding of people we may not understand. As a Comedian he does that by making people laugh at stereotype we all see but think we're not suppost to. Because the best way to make everyone get along is to make them loosen up, alow themselves to laugh at them self and realise everyone is just trying their best to get along in this life.
@degau558
@degau558 5 лет назад
Couldn't agree more, a lot of the humour is pretty broad but there's also so much nuance to the characters that I never feel like we're laughing at them. We're laughing at absurd things being said in gloriously deadpan ways, and the little things that we can relate to ourselves or someone we know. It's a show about letting your freak flag fly, embracing our own weirdness and idiosyncrasies, and using that to help understand others. Boiling that down to just "a guy has sex with a cash register," as an example, is missing the point. His story is about how he struggles to be happy and be himself without embracing that aspect of his life. Yeah, a lot of the show is silly situations or lines, but there's a lot of depth that I feel NitPix missed out on.

I loved Lunatics. Watching that made me look up Chris Lilley’s back catalogue and I loved it all. I wish your review was nicer though, every sentence in this was negative.. There were amazing parts of this show, even the effort that Chris lilley went into with the details of each character s back story. The photos and videos of them all as kids and stuff like that were brilliant. And the actual scenery was beautiful especially The scenes shot in Africa. Also it painted Australia in a great light. I remember actually saying Australia looked really gorgeous in this show as I have never been there. He is also so believable as every character. He becomes that character. I watched that whole show in two sittings and I felt empathy and sad at times, forgetting that they were not real. I think that says a lot about him. Based on all of his work I would consider him a comical genius. And I disagree with you, I think Keith dick fucking the cash register is funny.

Great work man. I think your analysis of the structure of the show was pretty clinical and spot on. I really agree that "Lunatics" may represent a transitional phase that Lilley resisted, instead forcing a mockumentary aesthetic that seemed really off. Also, the complete lack of story didn't help and I really appreciate your breakdown of where the story of style failed. Although, I think I really disagree with your moralistic categorisation of comedy. I think this kind of rhetoric works great for a video essay, and if it simply was a property of you building your own story then I completely get it. But the idea that jokes require a moral insight is tenuous and, in a way, suspicious of comedy as a genre itself. In some ways I feel like the "edgy shock humour" you describe, without moral purpose and weak in structure, is so subjective that it's really an accusation of not lining up with your sensibilities. A lot of the time, the supposed moral journey of a joke, is the retrofitted nonsense of someone who feels too guilty or arrogant to find something on its own funny. To put it less intensely and more accurately, the social role of someone working in comedy may not be to decipher moral gaps and adequately respond to them in joke structure. But rather to search for an almost carnal compulsion to improvise joy. If a joke lands we laugh, if it doesn't we are angry from the embarrassment that we were forced to feel. We take this embarrassment and blame the person trying to be funny as if they've morally fucked us. This is just a disagreement about why you felt the series failed, not really about your conclusions. I think on the whole your writing was great, and I look forward to more of your consent. BTW, this is coming from a subscriber. Also I'm drunk writing this and I have an actual essay to write.

I think the term “yellowface” isn’t meant to imply that Asian people are yellow-skinned, but is a reference to old-timey racism when Asian people were called yellow-skinned. The term is a commentary on how outdated and racist the practice is. It’s saying, “Come on, we still have this shit going on today? Like, “me so-solly” ?!” That’s yellowface.

This review is pretty close to gatekeeping, since you just spent 10 minutes ripping into it without showing a single clip from it. I don't know if it was for copyright reasons but it's hard to agree with you or assess your points when we didn't hear a single character say a single line of dialogue.

@@jamstonjulian6947 the majority of his critiques are overarching issues with the narrative. How is he supposed to show a clip that represents how the mockumentary format fails due to the uninteresting concept of the characters? Or a clip to show a lack of narrative cohesion between each of the characters presented in the show? Or one that demonstrates a lack of a character arc?
@afineegg1040

Jamston Julian Would it still be gatekeeping if this was a written review, rather than a video review? After all, you don't show video clips in a written review. Not showing clips from the show is honestly the standard when it comes to many reviews, unless they just show clips from the trailer over and over.

I've watched a lot of videos on this channel, I don't remember it bothering me before, but you may be right. I just felt most of the video was him saying why something didn't work and then never showing an example. I feel like I'm none the wiser as to what the show is actually like to watch or what it's tone is. If it was more of a review and less of a full critique maybe it would be different.

I just feel as if he didn't really want to make it, but because he's popular with meme culture of social media Netflix and thier insatiable appetite for "trending" TV shows forced his hand to rush out and recreate the next "same old mocumentary". However they also said to him, don't be offensive though, it's 2019 now, the world can't handle that any more. The guy literally had to create the crapest and most unamusing characters in order to please the demands of his producers. I don't think Chris Lilley even had a drive to make more content after the backlash of angry boys - maybe I'm misinformed/wrong. But that's how I felt watching lunatics
@WillowJordan1979
@WillowJordan1979 5 лет назад
He created Ja'Mie King and Mr. G. They're both fully realized, obnoxiously funny characters. They're not problematic, and they're good satire. Art thrives on limitations. I'd argue the opposite to your point: he was given too much freedom, and he ended up creating several poorly thought out characters and dragging their plot out over 10 episodes. One episode per character should have been enough, because there really wasn't enough material. I did enjoy some moments of Lunatics; I thought "DJ Qunt" was funny. (What sold it were the adoring mom and brothers.) I also laughed at the cash register wedding. Part of it is just down to your taste in humor. What bothered me is that Becky and Joyce are not funny characters. They're tragic, sad characters, even though they both got their happy ending. When Ja'mie was depressed, she was still milking it for drama, proudly saying her mother had to hide all sharp objects in the house. When Becky was depressed, it felt real and genuinely sad. So Lilley managed to make me care about the character, but I didn't laugh at the Becky scenes even once. Joyce just annoyed me. There's nothing particularly interesting about Joyce.

Still, Lunatics made me find out more about Chris Lilley and find "Summer Heights High" and "Ja'Mie: Private School Girl", both hilarious. So I'm happy I found them. It's just a shame that Lilley seems stuck in the rut of mockumentaries, which is a format done to death now.
