Chris Paul has never won an MVP or a Championship, but what if his unique skillset actually made him one of the best players in NBA History?

I've watched Chris since his NO days, and I've been fascinated not only by the evolution of his game, but by how divisive the discourse around him is. Chris serves as a kind of Rorschach test of what you value in basketball. A lot of basketball hipsters revere his skill and play making, see him as some kind of Platonic ideal of the point guard. And then you have the casual ringz culture types who get their knowledge off 2K and gambling sites, who value stats above all else, and are left bewildered and resentful of the acclaim he receives, especially if they think it comes at the expense of players they prefer. Chris in my eyes is both a massive overachiever, who could be even better if not for his stubborn personality and play style. His impact on the court, on both ends, is wildly out sized in relation to his size and athleticism, yet his dogged reluctance to hunt own shot until the 4th quarter hurts his teams, and his insistence on playing massive minutes has no doubt contributed to his infamous injury history. Chris constantly tries to play the game he's got in his head, not the one he's playing on the court, and that leaves him inflexible and slow to adapt, despite all his brilliance. Nevertheless, he's my favorite point guard to watch. There are so many flashes of past greats in his game, from Stockton to Hardaway to Nash, even Tony Parker before he hurt his knee. But his insistence on only playing in his comfort zone has cost him greater success, maybe even a ring.
@Smido83
@Smido83 13 часов назад
He is 4th in my all time PG ranking, slightly in front of the Big O, Stockton and Kidd... but behind Magic, Curry, Thomas. If we would only count the reg Season he would even be 3rd, maybe even 2nd. Depending on how much you value MVP's and scoring over consistent elite play at both ends. He is a first ballot HOF'er, no question. But I have to agree that his BB mind is his biggest strengh and weakness at the same time. Hence why he has so many PO series losses after 2-0 leads. He wants to play his game and doesnt want to (or isnt able to) adapt to opponents if they change their gameplans. Its mindblowing that CP3 has more then twice as many 2-0 leads blown (5) than any other player in NBA history... except one guy, Blake Griffin, who is at 3! I wonder who he played with...

You can tell someone's knowledge of the game instantly by how they talk about Chris Paul. You really got kids putting guys like Kyrie and Westbrook over him all time
@lotuslife3239
@lotuslife3239 20 часов назад
Westbrook would bully CP3 1 on 1 and Lob City Clippers woulda been even more dangerous if it was Dunk City Clippers with Russ. CP chokes in the playoffs regardless but turns the ball over even more than Westbrook does when Russ guards him. He's overrated very high IQ but ultimately can't make it happen injury free. One of the greatest pgs ever tho
@legittaco5899
@legittaco5899 17 часов назад
@@lotuslife3239Injuries suck, but they aren't completely under his control. Russ being horribly inefficient outside of 3 feet, and just slightly below average there anyways, is. Also Chris is a miles better defender despite their athleticism differences.
@lotuslife3239
@lotuslife3239 16 часов назад
@legittaco5899 ur delusional. Westbrook without having to be a #1-#2 option offensive player can easily be a better defender than Paul. He has a higher defensive rating over the past few years. If u looked it up Westbrook over his career is not only more efficient than Chris Paul in the paint, but he is also around the same percentage as Paul from mid range. While Paul is high IQ and plays at a slower pace, has a more controlled ball handle and can shoot the 3 better, he still isn't the most efficient player. Westbrook is not only bigger but stronger and faster. 1 on 1 Paul can't handle him. Pat Bev called Paul a cone he only ever been good cause he had good teams with defense and good systems.
@nigelee
@nigelee 15 часов назад
@@lotuslife3239 I have no idea where you are getting your stats from. Just go to Statmuse and do a quick search. Chris is more efficient than Russ from everywhere. Not just from 3 or mid range, but also at the rim. Chris has a career % of 56, Russ is at 53.8. And its kinda ironic you attribute Paul's defense to his teammates, but use defensive rating to hype up Russ. Defensive rating is notoriously influenced by the players on the court. Its useless as a gauge of a player's individual ability.
@breadwinner3558
@breadwinner3558 13 часов назад
@@lotuslife3239 basketball isnt a 1v1 game though. Russ played with great defenders through his career so theres no excuse for him being a worse defender than cp3. Russ was a great regular season player but CP3's game was better for the playoffs, CP3 was a far more efficient player than Russ

You cant allways blame the Franchise. He sometimes is his own biggest enemy, specially in the Playoffs. Its not just the franchise if CP3 has more 2-0 leads blown in the PO then any player in NBA history. He has 5... 5 times being up 2-0 and still loosing the series. and overall he lost 7 PO series after being up at any point. Also an NBA record. Is that allways on the franchise? He blew PO leads for the Pels (in 2008), the Clippers (3 times), the Rockets (in 2018) and Suns (2021 finals up 2-0, 2022 2nd round up 2-0)... at what point should you stop blaming the franchises and start blaming the player? Not completely, but he has to take at least some blame, dont you think?

Absolutely one of the best PGs of all time! It's really unfortunate that he had many injuries at bad moments, but on the other hand, he is still freaking balling out at almost 40 (hope he stays healthy for the Spurs!)! Those Clipper years were one of the most fun teams to watch, EVER. He may even be the most well rounded PG of all time imo, especially with how good he was on defense. Nash was a better shooter from all over, and maaaybe a tad better/flashier passer, but he was way worse on defense and more fun to watch imo. Kidd was way bigger and stronger and a great defender and rebounder, and probably a slightly better passer, but he was nowhere near as good of a shooter as CP3 or Nash. He did get a 3pt shot late in his career, but nowhere near as good at scoring on any level. I don't really like comparing different eras because of the way different styles of play... And there was way less shooting 3s... But Magic was just 3 sizes bigger than all 3 I mentioned lol He is still probably one of the flashiest and most talented passers ever born. And he was a pretty good scorer overall thanks to his size, mostly posting up and closer to the rim. But he wasn't that good on defense. And probably one of the best PGs ever, Stockton... He was also THE master of P & R and simple accurate reads and passes. He was also great on defense, and he did have a decent jumpshot for the era, but again, different times. Didn't really watch Oscar Robertson and don't know much about him other than the crazy stats... And the only one I would probably add to the kind of elite "true" PGs are Isiah Thomas, he was also very versatile. The Glove was also nice. Penny was freaking insane but his career was brutally short. Curry is awesome and absolutely one of the best players of all time, but nowhere near as good as passer as any of the above, but obviously much better scorer. He is actually a solid passer, from his early Mark Jackson days in GSW, but they quickly realized he should be shooting as much as possible instead of passing lol...

Chris Paul is one of the most overrated, manufactured players ever. The epitome of the modern stat padding nba Part of the banana crew and president of the NBPA. Nothing but a playoff choker that always fakes an injury when eliminated, just like his banana boat buddy

He's quite boring. Very good at a lot of things but there's nothing exciting about his game
