The connection between the king and Anastasia is genuinely one of the sweetest platonic relationships I've seen in any Disney movie

I'm guessing her biological father passed when they were super young and her step father was a merchant so he wasn't around as much and he passed when they were still kids to, so his genuine kindness is something Anastasia needed. She had the potential for good and I'm glad she got that chance. There is the movie ever after where it's a Cinderella story that also has the second step child be the kinder one to help cindnerella

I don’t like it when people say the original Cinderella tale is a weak story. “You can always change your circumstances,” is great, but not everyone has that option. I didn’t. Cinderella was in an abusive situation, and she didn’t have any options. Yet, good things *did happen* to her. She wasn’t waiting around for a prince to save her, she literally just wanted to go to a party and have nice things, only for a night. Yes Cinderella 3 is a masterpiece :p

People may have issues with the mice who steal attention from Cinderella and don't let her show much personality and have good character development. That's why I prefer not the cartoonish disney Cinderella, but the live-action one starring Janina Żejmo (1947). Her Cinderella: 1. Has no clever animal friends, and that lets her have more screentime + makes her deal with (almost) all her problems on her own = no thoughts like "why the mice aren't the protagonist? They are better at moving the story and are more fun" 2. At the ball, she not only dances with the prince, but also helps the king with fixing his suit and entertains other guests. And thus it makes sense why the prince and the king loved her: she has shown them not only a pretty face, but also a kind, compassionate and joyful personality

As a child my mind broke with Cinderella 3, the stakes! The fairy godmother turned into stone! The prince don’t recognizing Cinderella! The fact that after he remembered her and I lowered my guard, A BRIDE CINDERELLA CLONE APPEAR!!!?!?! And an evil pumpkin carriage trapping Cinderella to her doom!? That was nightmarish, so twisted and contrasting with the dram like that she had at the ball, and the fact that after all of that at their wedding given the chance to get back to their original easier timeline, they decided to stay like this together, where both fought for their love!!!!! As a little girl I was a Disney princesses obsessed but Cinderella wasn’t a highlight, Cinderella 1 was one of the few dvds that we had so we gotten so usted to that status quo that Cinderella 3 braking and flipping that status quo was unbelievable, and made me have a soft spot for Cinderella and the prince, and you can see their chemistry and connection here, and oh the Prince! Don't forget that another reason Cinderella 3 works so well is that it could just be its own story and not a sequel. The chemistry between Charming and Cinderella is also incredibly sweet. The fact that even when Charming is enchanted, he still knows that something is wrong and does his best to fight it. That scene where he somehow manages to get on the boat Cinderella is banished on, finally touches her hand and the dark clouds around them somehow brighten and become better as he finally breaks the spell and sees the girl he loves. Part of why it works, is because at least in the version of the story I read of Cinderella, there actually was supposed to be one mean sister who called her Cinder, and one who is more kind and called her Ella. The reason Cinderella doesnt use the wand when she has the chance is simply because it's not in her character, and this reflects some really ancient beliefs about both magic and religion. In the first movie, Cinderella is humble, patient, and mostly content, not selfish or ambitious like Lady Tremain or her daughters, and her Fairy Godmother, similar to a guardian angel, uses her magic to reward Cinderella for her strength of character. By contrast, in the third movie, Lady Tremain steals the Fairy Godmother's magic and uses it for her own selfish purposes. In other words, Cinderella uses what's known as "right-handed magic," which comes as a reward for humbling oneself before God or the gods, and Lady Tremain uses what's known as "left-handed magic," wielding supernatural powers for her own gain. Simply put, Cinderella would never use stolen magic to get her way, because that would be the wrong thing to do. It's exactly the kind of thing that Lady Tremain would (and does) do.

I simply adore the scene between the King and Anastasia. It perfectly highlights the blooming change in Anastasia's character. At first, she probably assumed the gift was going to be a piece of jewellery, perhaps a crown or just something of high standard; at first, she's a little dismayed at the sight of the shell, most likely perceiving it as invaluable. Expected considering she's been taught by her mother to grow up materialistic and expect the best of rewards. But she doesn't openly express disgust of any sort considering this would be disrespectful to the King (though had Cinderella done something similar in the first movie, Anastasia would've probably discarded it). Without the presence of her mother and sister in the room, she's beginning to be the good person she yearns to be. Of course, the king explains the importance of the shell, that being a symbol of true love, particularly between him and his late Queen. By the end, Anastasia is absolutely fascinated by the shell upon hearing his story and starts to cherish it, allowing her new view on true love help her blossom into a hero. On top of that, the King gets some brilliant development too. Simply a heart-warming scene in my eyes.
@turtswing
@turtswing Год назад
It's because you can tell the writers of this movie truly love the original, and wanted to build on it, rather than tear it down. It would've been so much easier to take shots at what didn't work from "Cinderella", but instead they took notes and improved them without damaging the characters: Anastasia gets so much development, Charming goes from a object character to agenuinely, well, charming love interest, and Cinderella gets to show how determined she is in making her dreams come true without ever dismissing her naturally kind personality, or having her screentime stolen by the (admittedly funny) mice. Heck, even considering the fact that Cinderella 2 didn't work as a sequel, they even added Prudence and the Baker: they didn't have to do it, but they did, and it was such a nice touch! It's not a perfect movie, but there's a lot of passion in it, and it's a must watch for every Disney fan!

I'm sorry but are we watching the same movie? I feel like both sequels have to bend and twist the characters so severely to make them work for their narratives that they barely resemble their source material selves. •Anastasia was just as cruel and abusive as her sister Drizella (the only thing she has going for her is a more attractive name than 🌧). Adding all this heart and deep-thinking to her suddenly in both sequels, comes so out of nowhere that it's like bad fan fiction. But people love a villain redemption story (Vegeta, Zuko, et al), so I'm not surprised they've latched onto her. •With the Prince, it goes without saying that the third film gives him humor and personality and that's great (they're essentially building on a blank foundation). It's just too bad it's kind of this 90s/00s sitcom dad humor. You almost expect there to be a canned laugh track playing after EVERY line he delivers. He doesn't feel like he belongs in this fantasy time period like all the other characters do. •The King is even worse. Yes, he's given more character but it feels diametrically opposite to his earlier depiction. In the first film, he's baby crazy, that's it, he's basic. So suddenly making him patient, compassionate, and understanding (using trite props 🐚 and rote, mechanical dead wife sob stories straight out of Screenwriting 101) is more jarring than impactful. •For Cinderella herself, I actually believe that she'd display the kind of relentless compassion/faith in humanity that'd enable her to forgive Anastasia like she does in the second film; that's kind of her thing. What I don't buy is the girl power/action hero Barbie stuff they shoe-horn her into in the third. But I get it, her main traits are "saint-like patience" and "does chores" and the Disney Princess Brand probably wanted to boost her up for modern women by giving her some agency and control over her life. Still, it just seems disingenuous for early Disney heroines like her, Snow White, and Aurora. If the Disney Princesses are indeed supposed to be role models, then it's fine to show the active fighters like Mulan, Merida, Tiana, Moana and the more caregiver-oriented ones like Cinderella. A woman doesn't need to be ALL things at all times. •Lastly, Lady Tremaine. She's one of Disney's greatest, cruelest villains. She has no superpowers, no magic spells, no real resources, just a withering glare and some intimidating words, but that's all she needs to make one person's life miserable. Her effectiveness lies in how realistic her wickedness is: she's passive in her evil, she manipulates others to do her bidding. Giving her a magic wand robs her of her of her trademark effectiveness and that's genuinely awful! Bear in mind, I'm not trying to say you're wrong: the Prince HAS more depth here and Anastasia IS someone your root for now. But these aren't simple additions "onto" their existing characters. Instead, they tore ALL of the characters in here apart down to their atoms and reconfigured them as new ones for a 2007 tween audience. At best, it's a somewhat lazy retcon; at worst, it's an act of disrespect to the original filmmakers.

I feel like Cinderella 3 was made with the criticism of the first 2 movies in mind. 1. “Cinderella 2 should have just been Anastasia’s redemption.” that’s the driving plot for the film. 2. “The mice are useless and just take up screen time.” the mice are actually very helpful in this time. 3. “The prince is bland and Cinderella is just a damsel in distress.” the prince is a fun character and Cinderella fights for her happily ever after. 4. “The shoe could have fitted more than 1 girl.” The prince is aware who he danced with and he said early on the shoe thing was all he had to narrow it down.

Lil bit of a tangent here, but this movie really holds a special place in my heart because the first time I watched it was over at a friend's house when I was like, 7, I believe. I don't actually have many memories of that time, but the memory of that day is very bright. Her parents were very eccentric so every wall was painted a different vibrant color. There was a small, cutesy, colorful Tv on a plastic table out in the hallway outside her room. Her vcr was pink, decorated with barbie stickers. We sat in beanbags watching all the Cinderella movies that afternoon because it was way too hot to be outside. It's not much about the actual movies, 😅 but watching this made me nostalgic.

Does this mean that its safe to say that I grew up on Cindy 3 more than Cindy 1? Ngl, now that I look back at Anastasia, I find her cute and endearing. I can relate to her with her constant apologizing, awkwardness, and realization of how she wanted love for being herself, not forced. I love her interaction with the King for the wholesome Father-daughter vibes. The King was the most important person for Anastasia in this story because of what she learned. The Prince is just too funny in that window thing. Reminder that this scene was greenlit and animated by real people 😂 WAIT TREMAINE WAS ALSO VOICED BY WANDA?! Okay that’s too fitting

9:12 Another thing this film utilises brilliantly is the use of pause - not just in this scene, but several times throughout the story. The way a moment is given proper time to sink in before dialogue resumes just makes the emotional build up all the greater 💗 SOOOO many shows (even my absolute favourites) don’t utilise this to its full potential! 😩

"Make Anastasia more sympathetic" Hmm, gee. That sounds just like how one of the step sisters in "Ever After" was written. Except in that version of "Cinderella", the step sister was already understanding of Ella's situation, with being used and abused by the step mother and her older sister. Thus the reason why she never treated Ella the same as her wicked family. And spoilers, she even went along with Ella's plan to get back at her step mother and step sister, where the younger step sister pretty much disowned them when they "Asked" her for help, after they treated her badly with verbal insults. But thinking about it now, I like the idea of how the third Cinderella sequel rewrote the original story. THIS time, Cinderella gets to stand up NOT just for herself, but Anastasia as well, the Prince actually fights for the woman he fell for AND we even get to see the king and Anastasia bond as a father/daughter figure. Something Anastasia probably never had with her mother, let alone her bio father. Yes, I can understand how a few handful of fans might hate the plot of Cinderella 3, but in the movie's defense, I think the fact that Lady Tremaine and Drizella, the ones who abused Cinderella, finally got a bitter taste of karmic justice. And unlike Ever After, where the step mother and eldest step sister are shipped to America as "Scullery Maids", Tremaine and Drizella are made as the CASTLE'S scullery maids. A case of irony for making Cinderella, someone who was supposed to be their family member through marriage, the scullery maid in her own household since she was a child. And Anastasia, like Cinderella 2, gets her own redemption arc, but even better. Once again, she defies her mother in favor of wanting her own "Happily ever after", which is scene in the credits when she meets the Baker again. The phrase "Love conquers all" is true in the case of Cinderella 3. Even when Lady Tremaine tried to change time and erase Cinderella's happiness, the bond that the princess and Prince Charming had can't be erased. Corny, I know. But it's true. This also solves the problem with the ending in the original Cinderella story Disney made, where Cinderella marries the Prince, but no consequences are given to Lady Tremaine. Hey, at least it didn't end in a dark way like the original story version of Cinderella was written. FYI, it involves pigeons pecking the eyes of the stepsisters out at Cinderella's wedding! Would I watch it again? Yes. Do I recommend others to give this movie a watch? Yes. Is it one of the most memorable sequels that Disney Studios has ever made? Yes.

Exactly, the only part I loved in Cinderella 2 was the part with Anastasia. It was really confusing with the timeline as well and it took me a while to understand to make it make sense with Anastasia's story in Cinderella 2 connect with the timeline in Cinderella 3. She was already having a redemption arch in Cinderella 2 and suddenly it's gone in the first parts of Cinderella 3. I mean she already stood up to Lady Tremaine and somehow she's forgotten all about it in the 3rd movie?? With the going back in time though, it would make a little sense how she still hasn't met the baker and didn't have her redemption arch yet but still it doesn't work because it already happened in the 2nd movie. The only way it would work with the timeline is that if this was the second movie instead of the third.

I honestly did like the second one because it was something lighthearted and fun, and as an adult it makes me feel nostalgic. Plus, you add in the fact that it showed Cinderella coming into her own as a princess doing her duties in the palace, and Anastasia falling in love and forming a real connection with Cinderella as a real sister, for me that's a lot of good things that it brings to the table. It does have it's flaws here and there, but to me it was a cute film that helped to set up certain plot points that led the way to the third film.

part of why they didn't do much with the princes is probably because they legitimately didn't know how to draw them; if they had and real characteristics, they'd have to put more into their design. philip was the last prince of the golden era so he's the most distinct but even he still has a bit of genericness to his design

Jacque’s story tho WAS kinda stupid and could’ve been left out…also the side plot in Anastasia’s bit where the mice are helping Lucifer impress a girl🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

I feel like they got inspiration from the Cinderella adaptation film, Ever After, 1998 (so way before the sequels), for Anastasia. In that film, Jacqueline, one of the step-sisters was actually nice to Danielle (Cinderella) throughout the story while being her mother's less favorite. Near the end of the film, she and Captain Laurent fall in love and she was spared from punishment when her mother and sister were forced to work in the laundry room at the royal palace.
@Saeiyu

I was so shocked when I first saw this movie but let's be honest. If it wasn't for 1998's Ever After with Drew Barrymore there would not have been deeper explorations to the character of Cinderella. Ever After and Ella Enchanted (the book not the movie, good god NOT THE MOVIE) have been the best adaptations of Cinderella I have seen. I remember seeing the movie at age 4 and since then Cinderella has been my favorite Princess. She is the one I cherish most, even though Mulan and Merida are closer to who I am as a person, Cinderella is someone you can aspire to be. It has always annoyed me that the Marketing Machine reduced her character so much they had to make such a strong effort to make sure she was not a fool, a victim, going after the prince in the first place. Cinderella was a nice girl who lost her parents and did the best she could in her circumstances without loosing hope, kindness and inner strenght who only wanted to go to a party that was open to everyone in the kingdom. She had no ulterior motives but fate led her to happiness. Any production who fails to understand that is not a true Cinderella story. Another connection to Ever After and Cinderella 3 is that Anastasia/Jaqueline (one of the step sisters) is not as bad as her mother and sister (This is also an idea in the book Ella Enchanted but we are only talking movies). Expanding her character and then letting her find happiness while her mother and sister remain unrepentant is also a trend that started after Ever After. If you really want to see the best Cinderella story in movies made so far, I do recommend that one (I have not seen Brandi's version or descendants, although I remember when it came out. I was too obsessed with Mulan to go back to Cindy. One of these days I might give it a watch). It was a reason why I liked Cinderella 3 as much as I did too.
