So I was college in the 90’s when college was affordable. Now I decided to go back to college last year to upgrade so I could get into my program. Two weeks ago after assessing the price and the debt that I would occur I said forget it and dropped out!!! Best decision I ever made; all the things I need to learn, I can get from the internet for free. I will be starting my own design business and to hell with college!

Shit, even STEM degrees do not guarantee a good job/income these days. And if you owe 400k after graduation and make 120-140k a year, that still isn’t shit, you would have to live very very very tight to pay that back within 5 years, and that just doesn’t happen. People have bills, kids, rent, have to eat, etc… I regret going to uni.

I got out of college without debt. And I’m just happy to be out of it. After college, I read a ton of books, made connections, worked with valuable companies, and built skill sets. I do great now. But it’s definitely not because of my degree. All a degree is simply societal accreditation.Either don’t go to college or choose a school that won’t put you in a ton of debt.

The problem is that when everybody has a Master's then a Master's degree becomes meaningless. To give you an idea of the saturation crisis, the front desk attendant/secretary at my work has a Master's! lol

That is why job qualification and degrees need to be more reliant on capability of the person and their application of what they learned to produce results. A degree doesnt actually tell you how capable someone is.

Depends. I worked for a M.L.S., to be a librarian. To be a professional in a music library then, and now, requires that degree. It was worth it. Still is. However, that varies depending on one's job or profession. I enjoyed university and excelled in music (for my B.A.) and in library service (the M.L.S.). However, if one's studies do not integrate like that into labour that follows, university may not work out in one's work life.

@@neilwinteregg881, well it might depend on the situation, but I can always depend on my Charmin toilet paper, no matter what. If you want a job, go to trade school if you want a social life, make friends through sports or clubs if you want to learn something, you can learn it online These 3 things, you can do for free or little money (or well under $1000) if you go to a traditional, state college, the tuition is what now a days? $40,000 and up?

You're better off investing in tangible products rather than that piece of paper. Some colleges want to charge the cost of a new Tesla Model 3, why not just buy a Tesla and hope to make a return off of it in the future (which is more than likely possible) vs. getting student loan debt and not being guaranteed to get a return. This shit is such a scam and how people don't see it is beyond me.

The problem is university ( at least non science , engineering or law degrees.) doesn’t teach you much practical skills it teaches you too much what is ( theory) and not how to apply ( practical) what you learn to a work environment. As long as you have these high school / family mentalities of going to university is waay better than any other option and the end all be all, there’ll be a over inflation of degrees. Plus you’ll continue have millions of students graduating and ending up doing jobs that have nothing to do with what they learned in university. It’s graduating and then realizing that it’s a uncertainty to get a job.

The problem is that there are a lot of HR managers who filter out your resume if you don't have a college degree. There are a lot HR managers who are very narrow minded and would NOT give you a chance for interview if you don't have a college degree.
@alicea5
@alicea5 4 года назад
Let’s just be straight. If you have the talent, quit school and start your own business. If you don’t have what it takes to be a business owner, suck it up and go to college. Isn’t that what they’re saying?? Cause you see, it is a pattern in their discussion. Person A created a business selling Product A. Person B started a business during college; and make so much that this person and those involved dropped out of college. They wouldn’t be talking about these people if these people dropped out of college and worked housekeeping or at some factory. Illusions after illusions. If you’re the average Joe, you have more hoops to go over. An HR manager usually have an HR degree, so of course they’ll evaluate you depending on your degree even if you have a series of experiences that would make you the perfect the candidate to be taught for their open position.

Theodore Frazier Sometimes, it is not Hr. It is the rule made by the boss and hand down to Hr. I work in Hr, and my boss once told me I was hired because my position doesn’t require me to “major in hr.” I have a degree and some experience that they decide were good quality for this job. My boss was willing to invest in my education toward a Hr degree, however, that is long gone. My company is moving out of town, so my temp goal is flushed down the drain. I think the hr manager does whatever the company decides on. You know the big boss, CEO, etc. Hr’s job is to be the watch dog for the big boss. We can’t always blame Hr.
@alicea5
@alicea5 4 года назад
nadege innocent what’s your degree? Are you searching outside of your area?
@msteach3082
@msteach3082 3 года назад
I don’t think it’s narrow mindedness, but rather a narrowing process. If HR gets 600 applications for one job it’s not feasible to screen for potential by going through each and every resume/application.
@Andy-im3kj

I can tell you from personal experience college is a scam IF you're not going for a job in the medical, STEM field OR one of the few in-between majors that actually land you a decent paying job (ex: Accounting, etc.). Eventually when the market is oversaturated with degree holder (doesn't matter what kind) your degree eventually will be worthless and you'll have to fight over every little skill you have with hundreds of applicants who have similar experience. The way colleges are setting up the system is going to make things so cut-throat that new grads will have their heads spinning with how much of a fight they'll have to put up just to stay afloat. And of course, the fact that you can't declare bankruptcy over student loans is another major reason why it's a scam. What makes me angry is that these colleges are willing to bring the entire country's education down with them for the sake of a few peoples profitability. How more people aren't angry over this is insane.

But the only problem is certain euro countries make it hard for you to be a citizen. And if you move back to usa for retirement well you didn't paid any SS taxes so no SS retirement.

I don' think college is for everyone and if you have strong spatial skills or the gift of gab, there are probably better ways to spend your time. I'd argue, however, that this is not true for most people. The college degree is really an insurance policy; during the last recession we saw unemployment rates for people with college degrees to be roughly half that for those without BAs/BSs. I don't disagree that inherently there is no true need for a college degree in most cases. The problem, though, is twofold: 1). A large number of companies simply use software that will exclude those without college degrees for a large number of high paying jobs 2). Companies have externalized the cost of training onto colleges and universities. In a perfect world, companies would not use college (or graduate) degrees to determine the value of an employee. However, it is a wicked world we live in.

It is increasing important to learn relevant information and then to apply it as quickly as possible. The world of work is increasingly changing, faster is one change. Colleges usually teach topics of questionable value, set by academics and not by industry. The curriculum is usually broad with very little that is relevant. Spending 3 or 4 years learning mostly irrelevant topics is very risky for the student. Even worse, it costs plenty to take on the risk. The degree is perhaps 5% relevant and costs a lot and a trade is 95% relevant and the apprentice is paid it seems obvious what to choose.
@Andy-im3kj
@Andy-im3kj Год назад
I agree. Even if it's not a trade anything at this point that gets your foot in the door of some industry is better than sacrificing 4 years of your life in the hopes that the field you're studying in is still around and profitable by the time you graduate. These students don't add that to their equation when adding up their debts. Most I'm afraid don't think critically of their situation and thus why they're dead set on regurgitating information to pass exams. I also blame the K-12 education system, too, because without them we wouldn't have the loads of people who blindly believe that without college you won't make it anywhere.

I'll bet one day new colleges are going to come up from fortune 500 companies. Like microsoft U, apple U. Because besides going into debt if you take liberal arts in college these young people are being indoctrinated by far leftist marxist teachers. They learn things like toxic masculinity, hate speech etc... Unless you're smart enough to adapt and do the job you're told to do. Coporations will be sick of unqualified college graduates. Also there's talk of many colleges already closing their doors. Since people are having less kids, there are simply less customers.

We go to school to get “high paying job.” That’s what we were always taught. Statistically, people with higher education get pays more when they are working in their field of study. The government wants everyone to be educated, but there aren’t job markets for college majors or the pay for some major is less than the degree itself. Education is now a product, students are consumers. Education is being used and has always been used as a way to distribute goods and resources. Our system is set up this way: the big boss, the middle boss, and then the tiny ants. With AI coming in, We will see the things we see in movies come true.
