My first impression was unsure about the approach, but I kept watching it and I love it! This is honestly perfect 😁😁 (first time watcher) I think another reason companies would say "thrives in low indirect sunlight" is because people CANNOT FOLLOW DIRECTIONS... Oh my gosh lol. I have worked for 5 years as a cashier in a local plant shop that gives great consultation on how to take care of plants in our zone and SOO many people do not listen and many who come in for advice like to tell you that you are wrong lmao... It is easier to kindly treat the general public like they are... Ignorant... just the truth. Anyone who has worked in retail know what I mean lol. This is great and detailed advice ❤❤

@steven nguyen so.many. assumptions... 😂🙈 And what low key, yet obvious hatred and dismissive talk towards women, (even those blasted soccer moms with their damned mini vans!) you ought to check yerself on that🤔 Arid and at best sub-tropical climates in which the ZZ grows, are NOT rainforests, no matter how many pleonasms or wrongly implemented academic references you would like to use. Arid-does not mean desert. It often refers to savannahs in the plant world, and they often experience both a dryer, more desert-like state, as well as a rainperiod, in which it transforms into an almost subtropical climate for a short period of time. The ZZ can adapt to it all, with its rhizomes, as already was stated plainly above. Go plant yerself somewhere, you seem in need of grounding!

This is the kind of content I want from plant RU-vid influencers. I’m tired of the plant unboxings and fake excitement about a plant that they can’t name but swear it’s on their wishlist, then they kill it a few months later, then they write a book about caring for indoor houseplants - I just can’t stand that. Keep the good job Nick. You’re going places!!

I'm going to write a memoir on the struggle of giving my plants bright indirect sunlight. Yeah overly exited unboxings get me. @haticebegum4683
@haticebegum4683 3 года назад
While over excitement does come off a bit fake and I don't personally enjoy unboxing vids too much, sometimes it's beneficial to see what to do when plants arrive in not so good conditions. Cuz most of the time, not always, plants arrive in somewhat poor conditions or disappoint us in other areas, so it's good to know how to deal, what is saveable what is lost. And Nick's sarcasm helps😄

Plus, unless you live in a green house, you can have a variety of plants in limited space. Then you can save up & buy the large size of your favorite one!! thank you for confirming to me that "bright indirect light" means absolutely nothing of value. I tried for so long to keep the direct rays of sun off my plants, until i finally realized that most of them do quite well in those rays. When talking about "bright indirect light" I have two guides I use. The first comes from Berenice Brilmayer's All About Begonias, written about 1950. She said, "If you can read a phone book there, you can grow begonias there." Since Phone books are a thing of the past, now I would say, "If you can read the fine print on a Pringles can." The other came from a book on African Violets. He said to hold your hand about a foot above your plants. If you could see the moving shadow of your hand on the leaves of the plant, that is enough light. Remember that these refer to plants that like fairly low light. I find the shadow test most helpful. If there is not enough light to cast a shadow, don't put your plant there.

Thank you for being honest about this. People in plant groups get so mad when you tell them their plants will only survive, not thrive and grow in low light. They don’t like when you tell them their plants will eventually die in a bathroom with no windows. They are shocked when they see a picture if my 5 ft tall ZZ plant that lives in a sunny window

I live in Brisbane Australia and I’m currently growing some cute little herbs like thyme, rosemary ect. Every single thing I read about them on the tag or on websites all say that they need to be out in full direct sun BUT I did that and they burnt! I was so mad. They never really specify different climates or anything so I don’t trust what they say anymore

@Cammibird1
@Cammibird1 3 года назад
I know this is a joke, but: most of the time when plants die from "overwatering" they don't actually literally die from too much water, they die from rot which is caused by too much water. The microbes that cause rot like to live in soggy soil, but they can't live in plain water, which is why plants in hydroculture don't rot to death!

I live in South Florida where UV levels and heat are extremely high and where most "house plants'' are winter hardy outdoors here. I laugh out loud when I read low light/no direct sun for many of the plants that thrive in the most brutal full sun even here. And yet some of the plants that say full sun absolutely need shade here to survive long term.

Moved them into a south-facing window sill and what do you know...growth. Also lolol to hoyas being indestructible. Thanks for the trick about drying out overwatered soil! I found two large hindu rope plants that were sopping wet and had some yellowing foliage. I think I managed to save them in time. 🤞🏽

My understanding is the most indoors can be is bright indirect. Given windows and ceilings it's never direct light. (Though some plants may still need to build up to bright indirect.)

I've spent years working in horticulture and you're absolutely right. When I was in sales I would always encourage my clients to learn about their plants (where it came from and how it grew naturally) and try to give light, water, and heat that was commensurate. That not only gave them the chance to get the best from their plant if they tried to replicate it's natural habitat but also meant they grew to appreciate the incredible variety and diversity the plant world has.

Love how entertaining and thoroughly educational your videos are! I'm new to owning houseplants and started trying to amass as much knowledge as I could regarding the plants I could adequately care for in my space. After my primary round of research i bought a few plants to go in my south facing window and a couple to go on shelves a bit further away in lower light. Being a first time plant carer I wanted to learn even more to make sure I don't mess up but the stuff I was reading and watching wasn't going into enough scientific details and focusing on what you should do but not why. (And also as it turns out having plant selling businesses that profit from trying to tell you that your plants will thrive anywhere) I ended up here after looking up the details of misting after not understanding how it would help and not just dissipate (lol) and found your video about plant misting. I'm feeling pretty conned right now for my poor ZZ plant and the pothos I thought I would be able to grow in my lower light spaces and now i'm scrambling to find a way I can put them closer to the window.
