Tech offices, from Apple’s 2.8 million square-foot “spaceship” campus, to Facebook’s Menlo Park headquarters complete with a botanical garden, have always pushed the envelope of office space. But coronavirus may make this type of work environment a thing of the past, at least for the near future, as companies try to balance communal work with safety. Here’s a look at how tech companies are changing their offices and work policies as they ease into reopening.

I work at IBM and have worked from home since 2001. Many times I never met my teammates because they were usually spread over 3 continents and around the US. I was able to go to Florida to help my friend recover from surgery. No one noticed because I was able to connect my phone and computer over the web. The answer is super simple. Allow a mixture of home days and office days. With those who come into the office, it'll be a smaller amount to not only control the virus spread but also to do specialized training with smaller focus groups. That way you get the best of both worlds with a remote-first focus approach.

I could careless about company politics or trying to beat your coworkers in the corporate Game of Thrones.

This remote work will increase the loss of high paying jobs here in America. We already have an education system that isn’t as strong as other parts of the world. But imagine that now we are competing with people worldwide for good jobs. This will only cause the big paying jobs which are already in short supply to dwindle even more. Pair that with the emerging world who as they gain better internet they’ll provide a cheaper work base and I think we’ll see middle class life and white collar jobs slowly erode in America.

On the contrary, I firmly believe that the workspace and home space will continue to merge along a wider swath of jobs that can adapt to the home office/remote work environment. The pros far outweigh any cons. It reduces cost for businesses in infrastructure and logistics and it promotes education, adaptation and adoption of new trends in both tech and software to support individuals working from home. With the possibility of collaborative software to allow for team meetings, interviews and constant, instant access to team members, knowledge bases and management it mirrors the workplace enough to remove what used to be the major downside of working from home. I was the head of the remote user support desk for a small company (so small that "desk" only had one chair) and also handled all their IMAC unless we had a mass on-boarding. Then, I was allowed to yell for help. I've watched the changing face of the remote user experience with interest and appreciation since '98.

Just imagine how the US company can save money - they have only one manager and one software developer from Texas and 30+ other developers and QA are from outside of the US. Of course we are paid 5-6 times less than these guys from Texas. But if you think about it, Texas lost 30+ high paying jobs and it is only for our small team.

The six foot rule breaks down when indoors. When indoors everyone’s breath is circulated via the hvac system. Masks will slow the spread but they are not N95 level of filtration. Each breath you take could have a small fraction of an infectious dose. Prolonged time indoors means many breaths that could equal an infectious dose.

This was an apartment complex construction job site and one of the project managers was double dipping by taking the identical role with a market competitor. Those jobs pay six figures and this guy had 2!! He also took a lot of vacations and FMLA time, guessing he did the same with the other boss. He got fired from both jobs because one boss called the other boss to find out what was going on. Remote work wasn't at all necessary for this guy to double dip on two companies. It'll just be easier for more people to steal from several bosses at the same time. :-)

Work from home option is badly needed especially in countries like India where the whole world depends on offshore services yet the dignity of labor and infrastructure is as bad as anything else. This not only reduces traffic and noise pollution but more importantly gives people badly needed work life balance. Right now folks are out of their homes on an average of 14 hours a day and barely get 4 to 5 hours of rest and sleep. Is this really needed given the plenty of options we have on hand? The situation proves that nothing changes and working from home is as productive as working from office where micromanagement rules the roost!

I'm like, seeing emails from my company about people still getting infected :/ Considering that I thought we were full remote since March, I guess I was wrong But we'll see come September onward about how this goes. This was already a direction a lot of companies were supposed to putting in place, and some following through to begin with, so if anything, we're seeing the eventual future for how tech work will go

The problem of work at home is the big electricity bill... Unless the employer helps pay that.

WFH eases pressure on infrastructure, lowers fuel consumption. Everybody should think broader and positive ...This will benefit environment and companies a lot on long run.

What about those people who are unable to work from home due to children being at home, or limited space ? I hope employers are not forcing employees to work from home if the conditions are not suited.

Corey M Not sure how you can add square footage to a home to provide an office space. I doubt companies will shell out thousands for you to renovate lol.

I think offices should give people more flexibility. Some people can come in 1-2 times a week. Younger people who dont have kids/families can choose to come in more.

There are things I miss about going into the office my coworkers mostly I was a remote worker before Covid no work wardrobe no makeup no driving in blizzards i thinks its pretty shady to cut pay because remote works can live in a less expensive place

I hope there will be a low that it is compulsory for workers to have a 5 foot cubicles. I hate when the office is full of people are gossiping and murmuring that is really annoying.

Does anyone really believe that open offices have any purpose other than to cram more people into a smaller space and be able to watch them constantly?

Tech offices shouldn’t even be a major thing like they are. If anyone should be pushing the work from home model it’s tech and California. As much as California has issues with emissions, gas prices, traffic, infrastructure and road damage, power costs, and the cost of leasing office space.. you’d think they’d be smarter and wouldn’t need a pandemic to change!

I thought this would go away more quickly, and that those investments didn't make a lot of sense, but wow, I just realized it's July and we can't expect the virus to be gone in december. That's a whole semester. No, the investments actually make sense.

Flexibility is the future. For some tech jobs there is no reason to be at work everyday if you can do it at home. So do agile squares fellas need to rethink the way to work.

Naw. Companies will not allow workers to work from home due to productivity. Once this is over, everybody will be required to go back to work.
