Let's explore why the alternating current in a capacitor leads the voltage across it by a quarter of a cycle.

I watched almost all your electromagnetism videos and my misconception that great content on RU-vid must be highly viewed or should come from a famous channel has been broken. Unbelievable that such quality content is freely available for all that too in small 10-12 min videos. Your method of teaching so intuitively and logically is awesome!!

I don't know that if Khan Academy wasn't famous 2 years ago but it is very well known now. I have a feeling that its website was still famous at that time.

Suppose voltage on charged capacitor is V. Now, apply External electric field with voltage V across capacitor but in opposite direction to earlier voltage. Even if you connect two plates of charged capacitor with wire, there will be no current in wire because net voltage across capacitor is V-V = 0 but there are external voltage due to electric field. Now, vary this electric field sinusoidely .

Thank you for your great educational lessons I have question please : i am confused how we can write : Vs= Vc knowing that the capacitor "gradualy" raise its voltage and doesnt respond instantaneously with the voltage source ! , why we are ignoring this fact and treating capacitor as if it is a resistor ? Thank you in advance
@netional5154
@netional5154 Год назад
Yes, my question exactly. Apparently the current is so high that the voltage across the capacitor is almost exactly in sync with the voltage of the power source. In that case the phrase 'current leads the voltage because the capacitor must first be charged' is not correct. It should say something like 'current leads the voltage because it's related to the difference in voltage which is maximum before the voltage peaks'.

But why more change in voltage means the current should reach the maximum value? Edit: I get it, since the voltage change is maximum therefore the current it induces should also change by maximum, any other change is lower than the maximum change and hence current doesn't reach a higher value.
@ahmedsami194
@ahmedsami194 Год назад
One second... When the generator voltage is increasing from zero,how the current is maximum? There is no voltage in the circuit there should not be a current.... I studied in Dinamo that when the voltage increase the current increase as the same
@Slovenija_patriot
@Slovenija_patriot 18 дней назад
It's because change in voltage is maximum at 0V (the graph is the steepest) which means current must be maximum so that enough charge flows on capacitor and that it's voltage changes fast. When voltage reaches maximum the voltage change is the slowest which means the current doesn't need to supply as much charge to the capacitor. That's why current leads voltage on capacitor.

But why we taking the Current on peak at 0 position? @ 0 position there is no current and voltage ....!!!!
@Slovenija_patriot
@Slovenija_patriot 18 дней назад
Because at 0V slope of voltage is the steepest which means the voltage change is the fastest in that moment compared to when voltage reaches the peak when voltage is changing very slowly. Faster change in voltage means more current must flow to the capacitor. There's equation: ic = C * dv/dt
