There are a ton of "The CW Sucks" videos on RU-vid. Some have valid points that agree with but they come off more like complaints and not actual reasons why the shows are so bad... So this is my attempt at a video essay where I breakdown the 4 reasons I believe most people feel this way...

Reading some of thes comments and some of y'all really scrolling to find some hate to chime in. The internet is a weird place man 😂 🤣 Regardless whether you agree or disagree with my points thanks for tuning in. BIG Shoutout to the people who disagreed and kept it respectful. I'm all for some positive discussion. This was my first scripted video and although I would've changed a couple things I'm happy with the result. #From12to12K #StayNerdy

They do not shoot multiple Seasons for the shows up there at all they shoot 1 season at a Time as they are large season and they do take breaks they cant shoot more then 1 season as they dot know if they will be back for the next season to have another season as well as the producers and writers write throuut the time off and during the show the 23 episodes they usually ae set to Film . it Cost lots of money to Film ese shows regardless where they are Sot at so shooting Multi seaso in 1 sle run would make no sense and also Brakes between a season the Actors have roughly 3 maby 4 months of Off time as wel before the Pandemic they wold start filming in Mid july and Film till March with Holiday Break ok Sorry long Rant but roughly that is how it is done and why they dont film more then 1 season of a show .

Another trope I hate in the CW superhero shows is the "team in the base". Every show has the CSI-like team in the base that supports the hero. It's a lazy cliché.

It's even more disappointing when you realize the flash in the cw universe has had his powers for 8 plus years and still needs an entire entourage holding his hand just to beat a basic ass villian especially with a power as op as his but the flash was a lost cause since season 1 and its too far gone now so I just hope they end the show already instead of dragging it on for another 20 seasons

I kinda think they do this on purpose to prevent being 100% reliant on the main actor. The seasons are long and having a team/supporting cast help with the workload and also make it easier when they do the crossovers.

Every CW superhero show can be summed up in this formula: - starts off well, willing to make bold and big choices to develop the main characters - lack of planning causes them to panic because they killed off their important characters in the beginning seasons so they add an unnecessary amount of supporting cast members - show becomes a frustrating soap opera with a million sub plots that are unnecessary to the main characters

@@edub3030 that’s not necessarily the problem, is how Kay written and how frequently. CW is just politely written and repeats so many things. I have a show that I really like that is pretty much character driven with the good guy beating the bad guy in the backseat. And yet, despite him getting a pep talk so many times, not only are each one unique, but impactful and develop every character affected. And all the characters have so much depth that for until the story ends (the author said it’s halfway now), they will constantly be developing because they all have little things about them that makes theme good and bad in some situations. A characteristic that may have not been an issue now is. What you want should still be done. If the writing was better, I don't think that would be an issue. I mean, Buffy is basically a superhero show and if there were any filler episodes after the first season, it was probably just two or three per season. I actually like the monster/villain of the week format and think we've gone too far away from that with certain things. everyone wants to like the shows and are consistently disappointed and it makes people angry that they could have an amazing show that they would love, and the CW keeps fucking them up. So, they hate and express their anger towards the CW to make themselves feel better. They give people so much hope and proceed to do the same stupid shit without even attempting to change, they don't listen to criticism and make the entire industry look like a joke. Everyone wants to like the shows because it's a show that they always wanted but it's like investing in a company and then not getting any profit because the company was braindead. Anyone who knows how and cares about story telling could have done something with these shows but instead they belong to the CW so now it ruins every single one for all time and now were pissed bc we were robbed of good entertainment. (Before I watched the video) CW shows and WWE are suffering from the same issue: "Where is the long-term planning?" There was none, thus they had to substitute with unnecessary drama every season. How many times can Iris act out just for the sake of having drama to overcome before you stop caring about her character? This is the strong suit of Legends. They can do silly stuff, change things up and literally dress up and justify it with magic or changes in the timeline. This lack in continuity creates some of the most human moments in the Arrowverse.

The filler is nessecary. What you seem to forget is that certain shows that have 8 to 13 episodes per season also have a much much bigger budget. A show such as The Flash for example generates budget through viewership and additional deals such as Netflix and their streaming rights for the show. But beyond that the show isn't financially backed by an outside source. The filler is simply nessecary otherwise the shows would have died out a long time ago.

I'm of the opinion that most of the Arrowverse shows, especially the early ones, were good...for a season or two, then they fired the showrunners who actually gave a shit about it and replaced them with a bunch of high school Tumblr fanfic writers. I think the one show that managed to avoid that stink was Legends of Tomorrow, where as the seasons went on they just went more and more intentionally absurd with it. WELL SAID! You hit it on the head, and dealt with the writing issues on a deeper level than anyone I've heard talk about it. The 23 episode thing with big superpowers is something me and my homeboy talk about all the time. It's so so hard to do. I personally think you can give them three good seasons if you leave everything on the court, like most did with season 1, but, for instance, the Flash only has three good 'movies' in him: Racing a Speedster, Outsmarting Captain Cold and the Rogues, and Time Travel/Saving the Multiverse adventure. They could have done more if they'd been willing to let Barry die FR FR and a Wally West takeover as the Flash and redo those concepts with new twists. But they tried to soap it and you're right, it just can't work for Flash.

About "the Big One" part: You are definitely onto something, here. Interesting enough, the CW shows have, in my opinion, replicated the very problem that plagued the whole comics industry, especially since the 80's. The packed scheduling demands lead to burnout/turnover on the too-small creative teams, which impacts the quality of the work. Also, I'd argue there's also the burden of 'continuity,' and lack of any long-term planning, especially with an ever expanding roster of characters. I think that's also the problem with DC's movies. Warner Bros saw Disney eating their lunch, and tried to compete reactively. But that's a whole other topic for another day... Anyway, keep up the good work. All the best, my friend.

i think another big issue they have is they keep introducing new characters that we dont need in the story and its getting to the point where its like, why should i care about any of these characters, this show is called the flash, arrow, supergirl, etc. I WANT TO SEE THEM, not these rando people taking up space in the show, like i get it, have some side characters every once and awhile to have more depth into the story and the relationship, but they have gotten to the point where the show is no longer mainly about the main character anymore, and its disappointing that they dont see what they are doing, like take the last season of the flash, they literally had like 5 or 6 episodes where the flash wasnt even in a single one of the episodes and it was about side character, THIS MOVIE IS CALLED THE FLASH!!!, why are these people sucking up all the screen time, i dont care about any of their problems, their side characters, they should only be side elements in the show,

@gandrewlee3

I feel like they know what they are doing though. They're taking the lazy way out because they can still make a profit this way. Make a show seem like it's new by adding in new characters. It makes the story feel like it's been refreshed or renewed and it does to a point keep the audience around a little longer, long enough for people to be hooked to serve the profits they need. This effect loses its influence/power by the end of a season and they repeat what they've done with another character, tweaked just a little bit for it to seem different than before. Sometimes (in the case of the Flash), a plot twist is repeated but due to another choice that was made that produce the same results for Barry. However, I lost interest in the Flash because how many times can he mess up his mother's timeline before he learns? For me, he wasn't ever a hero because he messed up too much and made too many choices that lacked common sense. A hero is supposed to mess up for character development but they are not supposed to repeat their mistakes. Part of what makes a hero is that they show us how to learn from mistakes. The CW writers do this on other shows too. Supernatural is a great example. In the later seasons, they make huge promises of a big bad while having the brothers promise not to ever betray each other and to leave the past in the past. Then a bunch of epic fails happen and they're right back to their soap opera to serve the season finale which often ends in the same way either anticlimactic or far different than what was foreshadowed. I'm glad people are starting to catch onto this. I've been easily losing my interest in CW shows for a while now.

Also, no longer patterned on comic stories. We comic fans really want those comics to be live action. Speaking of original plots in comics and social justice, I am not ok w changing all of them for social justice. I am hispanic. I would love for more hispanic heroes but lets keep the originals original. Lets make totally new characters to be more diverse, or emphasize these non canon are from a different universe. Kicking some up the problems with the CW in more than one way 1. Is the tone they don't know what tone they want to be is either comedy, a coming of age story, soap opera etc. 2. It's the writing, they're always good in the first season because they picked the comic books that has a connected narrative. In later Seasons they just Cherry Picked which story sounds the coolest 3. There's no love or passion in the show it seems like it at first but later as it continues to go on they slowly start to lose that drive to continue a good narrative or a good story format 4. You have to be the characters they're great at the beginning but once you continue you start to see plot holes characters not acting the way they usually would act. Or doing something completely stupid, plus no development on these characters 5. adding too many characters like only shows they're trying to build a team around the main character like Arrow has his team flash has his team. Shouldn't be a team process for characters that usually work alone, maybe hints to a team like the Justice League or small team up with each other nothing big but nothing too small something to keep the audience hooked but not drive them away

Interesting points and most of them are correct. But you are incorrect in thinking you haven't seen your last point. I have seen many people talk about how the old broadcast television norm of 22 episode seasons just doesn't work in the modern environment. All they would have to do to fix this is break the seasons into full on mini events. Have 22 or more episodes, but make 5-6 episodes a story, concise and no filler, and obviously the writing needs to be stepped up multiple levels. Break the seasons into mini stories that don't need to tie directly to each other and you have solved the CW's issues somewhat.

Exactly. The only time getting political ever works is if the character or characters the story are about are political or somewhat political by nature. The only superhero who can get away with calling himself a Social Justice Warrior without making every one around him moan in disgust is Black Lightning. His whole character is about fighting for his community, actively trying to bring about positive social change as peacefully as possible, and just doing right by other people. The CW Black Lightning show did a good job of exploring that aspect of his character while also showing him do his job as a superhero, but it still felt a bit preachy at times. I actually think that the Young Justice version of Black Lightning is a better overall representation of his character as a whole, especially in his regards to accountability and open and honest cooperation.

I think I got about halfway through season 7 of Arrow (my favorite of the CW series, I had already given up on the others) and realized I was just "getting through it" and not enjoying it, so I stopped watching. After realizing that Season 8 would be the last one, I thought I'd catch up, so I could see the final season, but only got through 2 more episodes before giving it up again. Later I heard a major spoiler regarding Oliver Queen, and it didn't even phase me... Let’s remember Smallville set the tone for all the romantic/action shows on The CW. Smallville’s writing style was perfect for the early 2000s and it was a hit but in the last 15 years it’s become boring and formulaic. Arrow is a perfect example of how they copied the same romantic/action themes.

It was a show born out of the BLM movement, but it wasn't afraid to say that while there are these issues, some responses to the issues aren't right. First three seasons of Flash and Arrow were the best superhero tv shows ever made. But after that, it was a rapid decline. In fact some of the elements responsible for the decline were already visible in the third seasons of these shows but the story and the villains were still hype at the time so it sort of overshadowed those negative elements. But the fourth seasons just went downhill. Season five of Arrow was mostly good but I felt that Oliver's character was severely assassinated and especially his intellectual and fighting abilities. Still a good overall season. First half of season seven (Oliver in prison period with Bronze Tiger) was absolutelu awesome, rest of the season was trash. All in all I felt with Arrow it suffered mainly because of Olicity, and also because I noticed, especially after the prison arc in season seven that Arrow was always the most hype when Oliver was complimented by a dark and badass woman. You look at all his arcs when Shado, Sara Lance, Amanda Waller, Talia Al Ghul, Nyssa Al Ghul, Black Siren, or Huntress were in his life or closely associated to Oliver and you see that that was both when Oliver was at his best and the show itself was at its best. With Flash it was when he had a speedster as a villain that Flash and the show itself were at its most hype. Reverse Flash, Zoom, Savitar, those were legit the most hype times in the show.

Oliver and Felicity worked well enough when both were separate, but they were a mediocre at best couple. It was clearly evident in Crisis on Earth-X. Both had great scenes when they were separate or at least not talking about their romance, but their fights about not believing in marriage and the infamous double wedding (which ruins their credibility as a couple altogether) really were unbearable. Felicity interacting with most characters is not too bad, but Olicity really damaged her as a character. Most of my issues with her tend to come from that questionably executed romance.

Great video. I've been saying for a while that these shows have too many episodes. Stargirl is only 13. But the others, 22 sometimes 23 episodes is too much. Especially since what they do is the big bad of the season and sometimes they simply let the villains get away. I might let it slide with Batwoman but when your main character is fast like The Flash or Supergirl it doesn't work. Also these shows have way too many characters. And of course is cause they want to appeal to all these different demographics. Like you mentioned. You look at The Flash 90s show and compare it to the new one, i prefer the original. And that one only had 3 main cast members. The new one has like 7. To the point that is no longer The Flash. Is Team Flash or The Flash And His Amazing Friends.

While the team oriented approach always had a questionable handling and it's too late to change now, that character should simply not have as much focus. She is tolerable and somewhat enjoyable, but she is too situational and none of her major plots have worked well or have been really engaging. She tries to be a Jesse Quick parallel for Nash just because she happens to be a doppelganger of Nash's adoptive daughter, but then he dies, and then she tries to save and redeem her cousin just to see her die. Her romance with Chester couldn't be any more uninteresting as well.

I liked the first half of Superman and Lois a lot, it had a very realistic take on the up and downs of raising a family, and the parenting was very fitting for characters as moral as Superman (well, in most stories) and Lois. I also thought they built up Lex Luthor as a villain very well. But when Morgan Edge became the primary focus, it devolved into tired superhero tropes like mcguffins and mind control, and the family aspect became far less nuanced (love conquers all reeee) and had not gotten enough time to develop into an ongoing plot thread. For example, there's a bit near the end where Jordan Kent gets mind controlled and is saved by love. It would've been far more interesting if his insecurities and emotional instability had developed him into a dangerous villain (possibly with some influence by Morgan Edge but nothing on the level of mind control), so that his family had to stop him and somehow support him at the same time. I really thought that was where the show was likely going at first.

I too struggled with the latter half, but mostly because I didn't understand why Kara and Martian Manhunter weren't called to help. I assumed that this took place in the not too distant future, so it was possible that Kara moved to the far future like in the comics. However, in Supergirl's finale not only is she alive, but her identity isn't a secret, so more people should have asked for Kara's help--not to mention both Martians were on the planet.

I agree. They should've had him end up killing his girlfriend while "under the influence" and possibly hospitalize his brother. Also, curing him shouldn't have worked at all so Clark would be forced to lock him up, thereby ironically building a bridge between "Edge" and Clark as one being contains their respective father/son. That certainly would've made for a compelling dynamic. The mere fact that two consciousnesses are forced to coexist in one body might've softened up the Kryptonian part over time but could just as well lead to hardening Jordan's soul in the process.

And what you mentioned was when Superman was just a guest star - not a hero with his own show so I'll ask again, why didn't Supergirl ask for his help this last season when she was up against his actual arch-nemesis, or why didn't the Flash ask for the supers help for lots of stuff? And they showed that Superman was able to fight off the Kryptonians perfectly fine by himself and with Steel by his side - why would he NEED to call anyone?
