This performative talk comes from the speaker's personal experience as an artist scholar and outside insider who travels between the US and China for dance production and research.
Dr. Fangfei Miao is an Assistant Professor of Dance in the School of Music at U-M. She is also an accomplished international dance scholar, choreographer, and dancer. Her current research on dance and Asian studies has led to her book project that focuses on historical “errors” in cross-cultural dance transmissions in Reform Era China (1978-present). She has toured internationally and staged her experimental choreography in New York City, Los Angeles, Auckland, and Beijing. Miao previously received her PhD in Culture and Performance (2019) from UCLA, MFA in Choreography (2011) and BA in Dance History and Theory (2008) from the Beijing Dance Academy, China’s premier dance conservatory. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I've never considered dance as a universal language. When we bring in culture and tradition, it's a language of itself that sometimes isn't understood or can be misunderstood even in the country or culture it derived from.

Dance, as a medium for the pure expression of the soul, can be compared to facial expressions. The passion being communicated is intuitively obvious. You may never have encountered a particular dance before, but within a few minutes, the length and force of every gesture will have expressed to you the sentiment. Dance is as universal a language as a smile.

I did enjoy her examples, illustrations and perspectives. Bravo to the demonstration. I think that dance is considered universal because of the reaction humans have when the hear music and react to it regardless of the genre of music the are listening to and how well they execute the dance moves based on type of music. The type of dance skills and level of mastery then is scrutinized based on culture and social review as onlookers look at how proficient you perform the moves, which gets critiqued by people from that culture of dance as she explained so well. In the end we dance as a form of reaction to music as a stimulus and it people looking that decide to just either just see it as just someone reacting to the music or the can critique how well our dance moves compliment the music.

Universal.....not Global......you know....Other beings from other worlds.....don't be smug.....what we think is dance to show happiness...could be misunderstood for hate or some illogical who knows.
@RuinedTemple
@RuinedTemple Год назад
@@Figs4Fun They weren’t being smug. Universal, in the context it’s used in this vid & comment, is defined as “used or understood by all”, & the most common way in which the word is usually used is to refer to that which is “general”. The speaker’s message pertains only to how dance is interpreted differently by ppl from different human cultures, which then often leads to confusion & misunderstandings that the speaker, as someone with much personal experience with & understanding of more than one culture, can use to speak to the humans who belong to either of them in order to encourage connection, understanding, & unity between them. Since the speech only touches upon the experience, interpretation, & meaning of dance to humans upon planet Earth, then the “all” that the definition of the word universal refers to, in this use & context, can be safely assumed to specifically mean “generally, all the humans among the different cultures on Earth”.

However, I believe that they should statistically exist, they might even exist upon our planet, that crafts which potentially belong to them are often visible in the sky, & that there are many ppl who say they’ve seen them. So, no, I usually don’t think it’s a joke or a lie when ppl tell me that they’ve seen an extraterrestrial being.

Very interesting video. Dance is an expression of an émotion. Using the Body to say something here is its Universal langage. You say "neither of them identify my message" . But, as an artist you must understand and be generous enough to realise that when you give your art to the world Each one Will put his Dreams, story, hopes, fears,... Cause as soon as you give it to the world it doesn't belong to you anymore. It belongs to Each of us. That why Each part of the world you discribe could see something différent (différence of background, of collective incounciousness too) and in Each group an interpretation for Each person. Communicate with words, Body langage, books is subit to interprétation. Communication is all it is ! and that's Universal too. Thanks to talk of this Subject and with such a pleasant way. You pushed me to think about it, and sheer my thinking with People. Thanks very much. Namasté

I think this is exactly what the speaker tries to argue against with, this universal idea of dance as just being the externalization of the internal emotion, the idea that refuses to see dance as profound culture but reduces it into simple embodiment of emotion.

Heh...not a universal language... Learned this the hard way... I took a couple years of tap. I saw an opportunity for what I thought was a low-pressure, intermediate dance company. No ballet experience at all, and I expressed this to the instructor. "No! Come Audition! You'll be fine!" she says. I was not fine. I was NOT fine! It was the most physically demanding thing I have ever done - they went through Ballet, and all these other disciplines for like 3 hours, and then afterwards "Oh, ok. I guess we should do tap now..." 💀

Maybe I’ve recently watched too much philosophical videos, this is about cognitive bias, how misunderstandings is made, without spoken words. Perception of art is quite problematic since it depends on personal experience of the audience, and it is hard to notice since it is a subconscious effect. Interestingly, when the presenter describes how the “dance” is interpreted as “moving animals” by ordinary Chinese, instead of philosophical view, they usually “assumed” that dancers / artists are following a kind of script instead of purely personal expression. The idea of “personal” is highly suppressed in Eastern, thinking as an “individual” is usually ignored in public act. The idea is not easy to understand but yeah, it is a fact actually, and we should be aware of that.

I don't agree at all. Dance IS a universal language. Dancers are artists, who tell their story. Their expressions come from inside, and the audience either feels what the dancer is feeling, or not. Or an audience member can choose to feel what they feel because of their own personal history. Artists cannot expect the audience to feel the same feeling as the artist. How boring this world would be if this happened. Artists express a universal language of communication, whether it's dance, music, visual art, poetry, etc..."No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader". It is a feeling that we as Artists evoke, and then we let go...
