Ok so when we look at The Last Of Us I think a lot of us are hit with just how morally grey that it is. Joel's actions are questionable, Ellie ends up treading down a dark path and people have to do bad things to get by but all in all we can understand why this is. No matter how dark things get with the protagonists there is at least some debate in it with even the ending of the first game being like "well I get it" at the very least.
However in the case of David I don't think there's any point where you can actually sympathise with him. A devious and manipulative man he attempts to groom Ellie into joining him and his cult. In both the show and game we learn minor things about them and incase you don't know David is one of the main antagonists in both. I think he's been put in place to show that man is the worst predator of them all and amongst this new world he's managed to abuse people and do what he wants.
David is far worse than the infected and he even sees them as being something to admire.
Before the world fell apart he would've had to have moved silently and likely would've evaded the law due to his manipulative abilites. Though he definitely twists situationst to his benefit post apocalypse he has even more power because the world has fallen apart. He has taken away his followers from the ovelooking guise of Fedra and isolated them far away from everyone else in a habitat that not many people would venture to due to the weather there.
Here he's very much built a cult around him and like most cult leaders he's abused this power to allow him to carry out his dark fantasies.
Describing himself as a man with a dark heart we see how he's led his flock into a life of cannibalism and that they've been shunned into silence even when witnessing abuse.

He also pulls a very classic grooming predator move that older people use on teenagers where they basically praise them and tell them things like they're smarter or more mature or whatever than everyone else their age. They try to make their target think that they're equals at a time when you're really still a kid but you desperately want to be taken more seriously and start thinking of yourself as a young adult. And I definitely think that girl David slapped was his initial target, she's the only person in the crowd we see who speak up at all, even her mother doesn't. Which makes me think he was grooming her already and making her think she's special to him in some way. But when he saw Ellie he changed his mind and her privileged position was taken away.

@WynneL

You're right, but that's extra disturbing, because that's the kind of thing any good teacher/mentor/relative might say to a bullied or precocious kid, hoping to empower them and make them feel more able to stand up to others. The idea of people using encouraging words like that as a tool for evil is just so awful. Then you remember David *was a teacher* and it gets even *more* appalling. Unlike with a lot of people, the apocalypse didn't make him evil--he already was. Think you're right about the girl, too--the way she yelled for Ellie to die sounded almost like she was jealous of her. Maybe he'd already been hurting her, if only psychologically.

Yes, David Koresh was the leader of the Branch Davidians (an aberrant offshoot of the Seventh-day Adventist church) who gathered in Waco, Texas. He and his followers were besieged by the FBI because of accusations that he was marrying underage girls. The siege ended when his lieutenant, Stephen Schneider, killed Koresh and the compound was burned. It's inconclusive whether the Branch Davidians deliberately set the fire or whether the FBI accidentally did so. As you can see, Koresh's situation was considerably more complicated than David's was in The Last of Us.

I found the finale with David (ie Ellie axing the ever living hell out of him) to be incredibly cathartic. David is an incredibly evil character for many reasons, but for whatever reason the food thing really stuck with me. Comparing the resort to Jackson, you can see the antithesis to what Joel said in his (granted oversimplified) explanation of the “before times” - some people didn’t want anyone to own anything and some people wanted to have it all. David, in his selfish quest for power and control, would rather live a miserable, eked out existence where he is on top and can do whatever he wants. Whatever abilities he may or may not have, he clearly did not have any business leading a self-sustaining community. I was really struck by the fact that the community had next to nothing stored to survive the winter (although I wasn’t clear how long they’d been there), and how David probably didn’t think it was in his best interest to offer them anything beyond near starvation. I’ve seen other folks suggest that David was lying about being a teacher, but I think your explanation is more likely. Having a “violent heart” does not necessarily mean acting out in a blatant way - most abusers act quietly and carefully, and that’s why they are not caught. If anything, him having a position of power over children makes perfect sense for his character’s motivations.

David has always stuck with me. I actually fast forwarded parts of the TV show ep because I didn't want to be reintroduced to his "humanity". But even knowing what he truly was and skipping in the ep, the impact of him unmasking to Ellie still just totally got to my core. Chilling.

What's funny to me is thinking about the aftermath of this destructive duo's interactions with these different societies, in that directly or indirectly, they are wiping out the fighting force of each community, leaving everyone else in the community kinda boned.
@skillfulfighter23
@skillfulfighter23 Год назад
Id argue that the leaders of the fighting forces did it to themselves. Kathleen and David's group were the initial aggressors and both of them had several chances to let it go but they both chose to pursue Ellie/Joel and they are both probably wiped out now

I honestly don't think there was anyone siding with David. Sure he ran a town full of families with kids and they seemed more or less functional I don't think they realize they're eating people, David provides and no one questions it, a parody of Jim Jones, David koresh, they were charming leaders who started off as a savior figure with their head on straight and it just devolved like every cult does.

I agree that we disregard a considerable portion of what Joel has shown to have become. They quite literally skip over 20 years of his monstrous offenses. Not certain that if the viewer spent any more time with David that it would, in any way whatsoever, help him gain collective sympathy.

@@elongatedmanforever1252 It isn't "for no reason." The reason David is evil is because some people are naturally vile. The only reason some individuals stay somewhat on the track is because of societal pressures. Once society crumbles you would see their true nature.
