Also i rode the ride at Carowins. They had some of the movie cars parked out inbetween the lines and I ran out and touched russ wheeler's real quick lol. I was 5 or 6.
People mispronouncing words is usually because they've read it and have a larger vocabulary than most people use in regular speech. I'll never get upset at anyone mispronouncing anything.
Oh yeah. "I gotta pit" "I don't think so, we're busy now" "You're what?" "We're, uh, eating ice cream" "ICE CREAM?!" "Now you're welcome to come on and get one but I don't believe NASCAR would think much of you trying eating a ice cream cone out there. You have enough trouble riding around the track as it is"
Odd to hear that Hans Zimmer didn't care for his own score. To me that's the one thing nobody can deny about this film since the music fits so well in all areas, from the build up to the most tense moments. Not to mention the legendary final scene with Cole and Harry racing to Victory Lane. Pure perfection.
Zimmer is a self-important douche. He thinks his blaring, one note wall of wind instruments is art, but actual music for DOT is "embarrassing". Give me a break.
There is a ten minute track that isn't even included on CD that is beyond epic: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ByHuAUwdbe8.html I think it's Zimmers best work ever, filled with adrenalin and emotion. So weird that he's ashamed of it.
i dont think it would ever happen, it would cost too much money, there are too many trade secrets and Frances Jr. wouldnt let them do that. hell look at how bad Talladega Nights is
It's not really all that uncommon if you think about it. It's all about adrenaline and physics that both things share so much in common. Why do you think so many coaster enthusiasts and NASAR fans are young, scrawny geeks?
Just like you, this is what got me into Nascar racing as a kid. After I saw the movie I watched the 1992 Daytona 500 on TV and have been following the sport ever since. Love the throwback paint schemes at Darling for the movie too.
German Kid here... me too... one day my dad told me he is going to record a cool movie on tape for me in the evening - next afternoon I was watching Days of Thunder and was infected. Tried desperately ways to watch it in germany on the tv, when I was 5 or 6 years old, in the sunday evening when tv coverage was very late for germany and my parents want to watch of course movies, later I tried desperately to get Nascar (1) from Papyrus try to run on our (even in win 95 times) "potato" pc... But some of my childhood dreams came true, just 20-25 years later in iRacing. Unfortunenatly, cars and racing have changed a lot.
My dad had a Texaco station when DoT debuted and gave me a poster from the movie that hung on my wall for years. That station made me root for the Texaco-Havoline Ford Thunderbird driven by Davey Allison, and broke my heart a few short years later.
No lie DoT is one of my favorite films. I may only be 25, but I love the film. I swear, every time I listen to Harry talk to the car, I get chills. You can almost feel the aura coming off the car, if that makes any sense.
Perfect timing and great video! I was literally just watching Days of Thunder. I didn't know that Hans Zimmer disliked his score for this movie. It always gets me pumped for a race.
I managed to buy a mint condition crew jacket from the making of the film recently and now is one of my prized possessions . I have always loved Days of Thunder
I absolutely love this movie! I was nine as well when I came out and it has been a favorite of mine since the day I saw it. Now I watch it with my son, and we play with the cars from the movie, and it is passed onto another generation to be enjoyed. This video was awesome! Thank you for making it. If you go to the outside, you can hold it!
The soundtrack makes this movie for me, despite what it's own composer thinks. Racing was always something Iiked and the soundtrack always evokes familiarity and comfort for me. I'll play it walking into any race track. I have yet to actually attend a race at Daytona though.
Luke Wingard I’m a police officer and whenever we get in a chase on the interstate and a car blisters our ass, every cop says “he dropped the hammer.” One of the best lines. Great movie and very quotable.
I've watched Days of Thunder so many times, I can practically recite most of the movie by heart. It inspired my childhood and was critical in shaping who I am today. I love this movie.
I appreciate the nod to the theme park ride at Kings Island. In 1994 when it first opened, I got to go to KI for the first time... And 6-year-old me ONLY reached the 48" height requirement because i stood on my tip toes and my mom hadn't cut my hair in several weeks. Was my favorite ride in the park until it was repurposed for something else and the DoT name was then rebranded to a GoKart experience in the park which stood until Cedar Fair bought the park from Paramount and so on.
Holy crap, not only did you bring up the good old Paramount Action FX Theater, but the Defunctland reference was SUPER unexpected! Someone get Kevin Perjurer here to fancy the notion to do an episode on it!
this movie is great and is also one of the last films that had their cars actually race, if you watch the 89 season you can see the cars racing and hear the announcers talk about the camera car and the movie cars. yes i know the movie is basically Top Gun but in NASCAR format, but i dont think there will be another like it. i mean look at how much Nascar didnt allow Talladega Nights do. they couldnt race the actual cars and had to do most of the scenes before the ARCA race at Daytona.
Took my younger brother to see the movie in the Theater in 1990 when we were 17 and 13. It was absolutely fantastic. In 2018 shortly before his death I sat down with my step-dad and watched the movie again 28 years later for the second time. The movie was every bit as fantastic in 2018 as it was in 1990.
"Now while we're still under caution I want you to go out there and hit the pace car!" "Hit the pace car?" "Hit the pace car!" "What for?" "Because you hit every other god damn thing out there I want you to be perfect!" "...." Lmao
I remember seeing this in the theater as a kid. We spent the whole day at a water park and then went to the movies later that night to watch this. My friend at the time was a huge NASCAR fan and loved how they kept it real and used real racers in the interview scenes.
Stunt drivers: Greg Sacks (mainly #46) Bobby Hamilton (mainly Exxon #51) Hut Strickland (mainly #51) Tommy Ellis (mainly #18) Rick Mast (mainly Exxon #51) Jimmy Means Stan Barrett Phil Barkdoll Ken Ragan Tom Cruise Don Simpson There are several more, I'm certain, whom I've heard mentioned over the years as doing some driving work for the film. Unfortunately, obtaining a master list is impossible as they're not listed in the movie credits or on imdb or anything. This is just off the top of my head.
Days of Thunder is one of my favorite movies of all time and its such a rush of memories seeing Luminas and Thunderbirds. As a little kid I used have the #46 and #51 cars and had them "race" against my Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt cars.
This movie was my jam as a kid. Made me a huge Kyle Petty fan bc he drove the Mellow Yellow car at the time. Played a lot of Kyle Petty's No Fear Racing on SNES too bc of this movie.
Those 1:64 scale diecast DOT cars from Hardee's I remember them all to well. Me and my older brother we were able to get the City car, Hardee's car, and the Mellow Yellow car but for the life of us we could never get the Superflo car or Rowdy's Exxon car in a happy meal. It drove my dad batshit that everytime we were offered a happy meal it had to come from Hardee's back in 1990. My uncle a cross country truck driver for a living told my dad unbeknownst to us at the time he said to my dad hey, give me a few dollars and I can get those cars on the road for the boys. My dad said no, but both the Superflo and the Exxon DOT cars appeared in our Christmas stockings that year. The truck driving uncle was our moms oldest brother so I know she pulled him to the side and made him get those cars. Still to this day I give praise to my mom and uncle for coming through. I still have those cars in my display case to this day! But being 8 and 10 year old kids at the time we had short attention spans. My only regret about the whole deal is I wish I would've been a little more excited and grateful that Christmas morning. I lost my uncle who came through for us a few years later to a heart attack.
When I first got my drivers license in high school.it was an aerodynamic 1972 Barracuda,I drive the tire off it,but I used to live right by the highway 6 lanes, there was a trucks stop right by my house so I was alway coming up on trucks that were slowing down so one day I got the idea to start a little at a time trying to draft them and eventually ever car on the road to...the trucks worked the best when I got good at it I started figuring out the side draft seeing how far up the side I would be able to go and how close I would have to stay and when and where I could still get a push ahead off the side...I got so good at it truck drivers started to not like me much I knew exactly when to pull away to get the maximum side draft push I got so good at it would actually rattle the doors on the truck, blowing his doors off,is where that expression comes..from I'd see the drivers look down at there door like what the freak...then I be looking right at them, and my yellow cuda would pop up along side and then I pull away from them back into my lane and the door would go back to normal,I d see there face like huh...I had know idea it was shaken the doors of a tracter trailer so bad but I was gauging how to pull away and maintain that aero draft push so to speed away there was a little swerve move that worked steady handed but I just laughed this is really working, first time I did it right following I got a boost from 55 to 80mph it was like I got hit from behind it worked so good driving in broken air and vacuum left by the front vehicle... Never thought I could use that to drive for real...
Great video. I just watched the movie last night because i haven't in a couple years. I have loved this movie even before i went to the theater the day it came out. I kept up with the making of it as i was at the Phoenix race in 89. I fell in love with the City Chevy Lumina. You hit all of the big points right on the head. Nice job.
While we are still under a caution i want you to go back out there and hit the pace car Hit the pace car what 4? Cause you hit everything else out there i want you to be perfect
The first movie I ever saw in theaters was DOT! Me, my 3 siblings, mom, dad, 2 of my uncles, and 3 of my grandparents all together went to see that movie the first week it was out in our newly built mall only 6 months old and the brand new Regal Cinema that had just opened. We took up damn near one entire row in one section people were like WTF! That's a fun and great memory growing up I'll never forget!
Thanks for this video, Days of Thunder IS awesome! Love the score by Hans Zimmer, very different from what he does nowadays but I have songs from this movie on my music playlist. Even Siskel and Ebert gave it praise and recommended it! lol
Watched your whole video buddy roe and I think you hit the nail on the head this movie was made when the sport was at its most modern and most traditional it's the nascar I remember and why I love it I watch this racing from my criddle to it's grave and it's a shame it's not like it was a damn shame at that
In the early days of RU-vid there was a video called Days of Thunder Redux - Cruising Edition .. or something like that. It was a voiceover of some scenes, really funny. If someone has that or could find it so I could see it again my life would pretty much be complete
My favorite part of this movie is "Go out and hit the pace car" "The pace car" "Yes the pace car" "Why" "You hit every other God damn thing on the track, I'm trying to make you perfect."
Well done. I remember that simulator ride (and the Kyle Petty intro) at Kings Dominion in Virginia as well (when Paramount owned it) and riding it at least a couple dozens times throughout the day. My dad said that I had my "race face" from start to finish each time.
They had the Days of Thunder "ride" at Paramount's Carowinds, Charlotte, NC, too. Rode it several times. Not bad, as far as those motion simulation rides go.
Man I remember the days of thunder ride. They milked it all the way even into the 1992 Winston cup season. When i was 12 and I was at my first nascar race at Michigan with my dad, the motion ride movie simulator was there. It was an enclosed race trailer with seats that project scenes from the movie like you were actually racing. It was awesome and amped up my hype for the actual race to begin when I got out!
The DOT ride we had one of those at Paramount's Kings Dominion in VA. Paramount bought the park in '92 and I think the ride was up and going as early as 93-94. They had Ricky Rudd's Tide #5 car from his Hendrick Motorsports days and Kyle Petty's #42 Mellow Yellow car outside where the lines for the ride zigged and zagged. I remember the Kyle Petty intro before the ride started. After a few years the KP intro was axed and they had a generic voice giving all the do's and don'ts before the ride. Around 05-06 before Paramount sold all of their theme parks the ride got canned for a James Bond themed ride. Same principle, you were strapped in a seat in front of a movie screen for a James Bond adventure. I never rode it after that. Even being a young adult by that time I was so pissed they killed the DOT ride! I'm glad they tore the building down and put something else up instead of pissing on the legacy of the DOT ride.
I have not (yet!) seen Days of Thunder, but my impression of it from your description is it's a western live action 80's counterpart to Redline, a 2007 anime film that gives off the sensation of blistering, time-warping speed and changing too many gears to be realistic but WHO CARES IT'S AWESOME AND HYPE WHEN YOU WATCH THOSE CARS MOVE. I'd love to see another modern counterpart that echoes those sensations that make my brain spin and melt from excitement.
fun little mistake that you have to catch real fast, during the "gimme some lovin" sequence when cole slams on the brakes in the pit he uses both feet but only hits one pedal
Agree 100%, without a doubt the best racing movie. Everyone gives it shit for being inaccurate but every other racing movie is way worse. Rented this movie so many times as a kid the store gave me it.
