i bought it on PS3 back then mainly for the fact that my friend kept telling me all about Frank then when we saw OTR he in a sense suckered me into getting it, i regret nothing. i made it to overtime in the OG DR2 so i was familiar with the layout of the story and events. I was suprised they added the uranus zone and right off the bat the camera feature just enhanced the game so much, I was also surprised at the price adjustments for the keys increasing given you can easily make money from playing slots. the Sandbox mode was pretty cool to just mess around without worry of Zombrex doses. My first playthrough i made it apparent to make sure i got all the gear for the protoman outfit and the heavy time constraint i was put in before that mission expired was not fun in all honesty. though it did teach me about poker. I honestly liked that Chuck replaced Leon as Chuck is easily visualized in his character to be a man who's lost everything, Leon is just your average COD player back in 2012 and while putting an end to his GG EZ! ass can be satisfying I honestly prefer chuck being there. plus when doing multiplayer have a Chuck-Off is pretty funny to see. Stacey as the big bad was an interesting twist though if i had picked this up while still owning the original DR2 the second i noticed her face in OTR i probably would of put something together. OTR IIRC fixed a lot of issues present in DR2 and seeing the story and even cutscenes with the psychopaths slightly altered and obviously re-recorded like slappy and even Carl going from reading chucks name and losing it to frank signing it and carl getting bent out of shape for forgery, its not much but it would be werid for the psychopaths to still have their "you caused all of this" mentality which the reworked scenes actually make them look more looney as opposed to revenge.
More enjoyable than DR2 as a whole, but still had a few downgrades. Survivor AI is MUCH worse, lost the ragdolls when you kill looters, zombies seem to have less options for being eviscerated etc
@@maverickay5807Chuck is alive in the 3rd game so Off The Record only really works as a sequel to the first lol I like to to think of 1 as Part 1 and OTR as Part 2 to Franks Story. We can pretend 2, 3 and 4 are some weird alternate timeline lol where as 1 and OTR are the Originals
@@MistahJay7 Don't get why 2's original story gets so much flak. You could very much argue that everything was already there for OTR to succeed, it being pretty much the same game. More QOL, camera, and other features I love, but the silliness of people thinking Frank needs to be the protagonist for the game is just funny. Trying to crowd-please is what helped bring gaming to the cesspit it is right now. Not to mention the franchise died the third time Frank rose from his grave lol (DR4).
I always thought it was interesting and/or a bit funny how they deliberately readjusted Stacey’s face model to make her look like she’s always mad or grumpy in this entry. It makes me wonder if at one point they wanted to rewrite the story to try to be *a tad more subtle* about her eventual betrayal, but they didn’t have the most time to do that so they just want “Eh, let’s just make her face look like she just saw her neighbor’s dog shit on her yard and they didn’t pick it up or something I don’t know man.” 😂
i always hated that rebecca chang died in dr2. i felt like there could have been so much more potential with rebecca and frank being rivals in future games but still helping each other similar to ada wong and leon kennedy in the RE series except with more sexual tension and innuendos LOL. and you're right the dynamic of rebecca and frank fits so well and the setting and narrative with frank being the main character again for dr2 would have been great. too bad dr2 off the record isnt canon :(
7:27 I do agree that Frank has a different sort of charm and does bring "levity" in a different way, but it's unfair to say that Chuck doesn't bring any charm of his own. His dark humor in the form of witty comebacks whenever he downs a psychopath is one of my favorite things about him. (I've got "Yeah... _you're on fire."_ stuck in my head whenever I see Leon's stupid smug face.) And of course the obvious love for his daughter and determination to protect her, etc. etc., which is why he was given a kid as a character to begin with I'm sure. It's easy for people to understand or relate to familial bands, especially parents protecting their adorably helpless children. 10:46 I rarely like timers in games. I do things at my own pace. I do think that Dead Rising works because of its time mechanics, though. The first game is a little rough, I failed the story the first time through because of it, but overall it's very good for the series and I wouldn't enjoy the game quite as much without it. You get used to the pressure and recognize you simply can't do everything in one go (at least not without a guide and, preferably, some experience from previous playthroughs). 14:15 You forgot to mention that you get the $1 mil back after you progress far enough in the story, so you're not forced to farm up a million dollars each playthrough unless you quit the story early and don't get it back first. It's a little intimidating at first, but it's the internet age. We all know how to google what we need to know. I grabbed the gambling magazines and just farmed machines for an hour and filled up more than enough money to cover the story sequence and buy that last cosmetic ex-DLC item I needed from the looter shop (do not forget the bargaining magazines, they make those $2mil+ purchases cost WAY less and you can chuck them once you've bought all the important stuff like the vehicle keys). I prefer the story of Dead Rising 2 as it was intended, and I like playing as Chuck more than Frank, but I also like all of the additions Off the Record adds. It's a very fun, very satisfying remix of a game I already really enjoyed. I expect in the future I'll be going back and forth between them quite a lot. I just played Off the Record for the first time recently and finished it, so next time I feel like playing, I'll play Dead Rising 2 instead. I wish they had mashed them together into a better version of both, though. It would be nice to play with some of the gameplay additions of Off the Record while still experiencing the story as Chuck like it was originally. As well as having access to all of the Off the Record DLC outfits (which you cannot buy on Steam, by the way) as Chuck without playing as the coop player character (which is a great way to handle the coop player system in this game, imo; about as good as Dead Rising 3's coop partner being one of the survivors).
I think there is a bit of a balance between the two which really would work if they were working together for a full game. Chuck being the one driven by personal goals/motivations, Clearing his name and saving his daughter. With Frank wanting to get the big scoop. The tarnished and the reluctant hero working together. With the two senses of humors working well with each other as well. Frank gets the insult in while Chuck gets the one lines. Just really wish that they decided for dead rising 4 to have the three main characters come in to finally end the zombie outbreaks for good by stopping the evil pharmacy and discovering the cure.
Im pretty sure the Survivor Icon when going through zones was in basegame DR2 as well. I might be wrong but i definitely recall that being even with Chuck
I love this game. Dead Rising is my favorite game and my favorite franchise. And I loved when they did this "what if" style version of DR2. The only thing I wish had been different, it wouldn't have taken much to have Frank's story take place around Chuck's story. As in, just make this a canonical game with a canon story where Frank is in basically the same places, just at different times or from different perspectives. Perhaps there's a second bunker with a second group? Or even better, Frank is there working on an investigation and runs into more DHS agents or something. I dunno, I'm not a writer. But with a bit of effort you could have had Frank's story take place around Chuck's and kept both of them inline with the story. Since Case West is the canon follow up where they both work together and meet up after Fortune City gets bombed, it'd make sense for Frank to be around anyway.

I loved off the record simply for the sandbox mode would spend so much hours in there and became stupidly overpowered and then would roll through the story
Can you imagine if dead rising off the record was originally dead rising two back in the day but before that release imagine if it was that little Chuck story game then you run up to the Boss and I’ll be pretty crazy to put 2 & 2 together
I'm an huge Dead Rising fan, I confess this is my favorite Dead Rising game. This might be the most mixed received Dead Rising game. Either you really love this game like me or you hate it. Even if you're on the dislike side, those people agrees DR4 is much worst. This version of DR2 has so much going for it, easily one of my absolute favorite Capcom games ever!!!
I feel like the fanboying got this game to be more well received than the original 2's release. I feel like I can't love or hate it because of the QOL and many things improved. Just remember that bringing Frank back ultimately gave you guys DR4 in the end... Just want to say Frank was an important protagonist when zombie movies and media in general were at a peak. TJ Rolo's performance in the first is absolutely peak, I just think Frank is an overrated character in the longrun that was clung onto a little too hard to keep the ball rolling. Just remember that a lot of people did not like DR2, this was the remedy for Capcom Vancouver to appease everyone and try to make things right. Overcorrecting the way they made Dead Rising feels like what made 3 fall off, and then 4 off the face of a cliff.
I still prefer Chuck, but this us such a cool concept that i don't believe has ever been done before in any game, at least not to this level. It's also fantastic that Tj came back and voiced Frank.
Easiest way to get the 1Mill is get all the gambling magazines and play the big giant slot machine in sandbox mode. Can easily make 1Mill in like 30 minutes lol
Funny thing, Dead Rising Off The Record was the first game in the series i ever played. I like the game, but i ilke the original a bit more. Maybe because of how chubby Frank is in Off The Record which made it harder for me to properly play a dress up game for the character ^_^ Though the combo weapons in Off The Record were a nice addition. Like making a combo weapon using two combo weapons.
with the remaster of the first game coming out soon I really hope they decide to give this game the same treatment with all the content the base game and spinoff had.
Fun fact: if you go into the Greene room that Katey goes into, you can see that she got crushed by the closet she was hiding in and her backpack is lying in a pool of blood and Frank will comment on it.
I played through dead rising 2 off the record, its a fun romp of the game with some distinct differences. at least they finally did something with that 1 area into a theme park
This the DR2 we deserved. Honestly Frank West character is lightning in a bottle and it is sad how the franchise evolved into the meh DR3 and into the terrible DR4. I beated the game last weekend and is so fun. Sad we do not get anything like htis anymore.
Part of why I did the series in the first place was to shine a light on it and in my own dumb small way, show that there is an audience for this series again, the way it used to be. Thanks so much for watching :)
I hate how in the mall cutscenes, all the zombies totally disappear. I mean is the cutscene world ‘canon’ so that means there’s barely any zombies? Or is it the gameplay version
I love Dead Rising 1, and while I really enjoyed 2 as well I agree that I really missed Frank. This game was perfect for that, (DR4 doesn’t count). I hated that Rebecca died in the main game so her living here was really nice, I also liked the more sympathetic good guy Sullivan.
Best DeadRising Game in my opinion also the story works better here as a sequel to the first game. To me it's Canon lol the first two games are there own stories and the Original Deadrising 2 is an alternate reality which goes into 3 which can be it's own thing lol but Franks story is GOATED and I always replay the first game and this one all the time.
yeah truth be told I FAR prefer the story of off the Record, Frank dealing with the events of 2 and even getting to save the girl was so awesome...its kinda why I couldn't really get into 3's story...at the end of the day Off the Record was a What if...and 3 had to follow the canonical 2's story and yeah I really wasn't into any Dead Risings after Off the Record let's just say lol
Lol I can see that. I still enjoy 1 and 2 a ton and it was a blast going back to all of them again. But after off the record, yeah 3 and 4 don’t cut the mustard
@@NedleyTV thanks for your opinion lol...but yeah I know people might not agree with me, but considering Dead Rising 4 was SO terrible it convinced Capcom to close down their Vancouver studio, and there's practically no future in this series, I just tell myself, Frank West's story ended after Off the Record and he walked off into the sunset after taking down Phano Trans...I mean hey who can tell me whats canon? Certainly not Capcom Vancouver...as far as I am concern Dead Rising 3 and 4 NEVER happened to me
theres a comic series that takes place right after dr1 leading into case zero. if you don't want to buy every comic or search dead links online i have videos on my channel. frankly this video was Faaantastic! 😏
So it's basically the exact same game just harder. So if I've never finished the original I should probably stick to the first one and beat it before moving onto this one which is basically just a harder version of the original, correct?
I personally think OTR is somewhat easier in terms of leveling up and what not, you have sandbox mode from the start so you can start leveling up there and then proceed to story mode everything Carries over
