Hungary became a part of the Triparte Pact in November 1940 and was now one of the Axis Powers. This is how the story of Hungary during WW2 began. This didn't automatically mean the country hád to take part in the German invasion of the USSR. Yet, Hungary did take part in Operation Barbarossa. Why did the Royal Hungarian Army (Magyar Királyi Honvédség) cross the border into the Soviet Union. Actually, it wasn't the first act of military aggression. After the German invasion of Yugoslavia the Hungarian troops also marched in and took some territories. The bombing of Kassa was the direct cause for Hungary to invade the Soviet Union. Learn more about what sparked the Hungarian invasion of the Soviet Union and Hungary during World War 2

So little known fact. When Romania and Bulgaria switched sides. Hungary was offered a similar deal and were even offered to keep parts of southern Slovakia with an ethnic Hungarian majority. Kind of how Bulgaria kept Dobruja. Stalin actually thought that the Hungarians would make good communists due to the 1919 communist takeover. However the Germans ruined any chance of them getting a favorable deal postwar via the 1944 coup. And with the bitter fighting for Budapest, the Soviets were in no mood for compromise afterwards.

About who bombed Kassa: there are many theories but the most likely is that the Soviets were the ones who bombed it, but by mistake. Presov, a city in German puppet Slovakia was just 30 kms away from Kassa and was home to an important radio station of the Wehrmacht. The Soviets targeted that radio station but due to a navigational error, they ended up bombing Kassa (it was 1940s technology and there were even greater mistakes, remember, the Allies bombed Switzerland several times while targeting German cities 100-150 kms away).

I have always thought it was either a cock up on the soviets part (For you non Brits, A Cock up is kind of a 'big mistake' with a dash of 'unintended consequences' and often 'poorly planned' added in for good measure) or a false flag by 'someone'. But there is no real hard evidence either way. Evidence of a false flag? It was rather convenient for the axis and the hawks in Hungary's government that it happened. Germany had 'previous' in their dealings with Poland in the build up to their Invasion. Yes, totally circumstantial and flimsy.

Interesting and nicely presented. To me it does look like Hungary was caught between a rock and a hard place, help Hitler in his "crusade" or be invaded by the Wehrmacht and at that time, with the examples of Yugoslavia etc. and Germany apparently unstoppable, their choice is not too surprising.

What if Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary put aside their differences and stood together against the Axis? A golden opportunity lost. Czechoslovakia kow towed, Hungary collaborated; only Poland stood up and refused, was invaded by 2 nations, betrayed by France and Great Britain and continued to fight even in the Warsaw uprising of 1944.

The problem with Hungary was its elites (aristocracy and politicians) that were dreaming of restoring medieval kingdom of Hungary without realising that many things had changed in 400 years. Austria on the other hand was more diplomatic in its approach of minorities. So as long as you respected the laws and the Emperor ,the empire was tolerant with you. On the other hand the Hungarian part of the Austro-Hungarian empire wanted that the slavs and romanians to become hungarians by force ,a delusion that in that age of nationalism failed dramatically. When the Empire colapsed after WW1, Hungary found itself surrounded by enemies and without a friend fighting on multiple fronts with the slavs and romanians.

An excellent piece of work. BZ. Desperate to prevent Dolphy from favoring Romania in any territorial disputes, Hungary needed a Casus Belli to join the German invasion of the USSR. As you mentioned the Germans were not overly enthusiastic on having Hungary tag along and the Soviets had no problem with them. Conveniently Kassa (a city lost due to Trianon and regained only 2 years prior) was bombed. Several references implicated Hungarian officers including Henrik Werth chief of army staff. Another piece of essential viewing !….I have often thought that, somewhat akin to Franco’s Falangist Blue Division in the USSR, Horthy and the Arrow Cross looked at Barbarossa as ‘ revenge ‘ for Bolshevik presences in their respective countries ( 1919, Hungary, 1936-39, Spain ).

Just a correction: Horthy the aristocrat disliked the Arrow Cross to a great degree, unlike many of others in the government, because he saw them as a political rival, with all those somewhat socialistic-sounding social policies and anti-aristocratism. Of course the distaste was mutual, especially since the self-appointed governor put many of them in prison. He was the arch-opportunist, and I would be very wary of ascribing any ideological motivation for these actions. As for the Arrow Cross, I do not claim to or even wish to understand their motivations, and I am not even sure one can understand fanatics this way.

First of all: nice video, thanks for your great work. Hungary only attacked Yugoslavia when it ceased to exist after Slovenians and Croatians having declared independence. They took only a small part of the former Hungarian Kingdom awarded to Serbia in 1920- the majority of that territory Hungary took back was Hungarian in population. I wonder which European country would not do at least so even today. To my knowledge, the most plausible answer to the bombardment of Kassa (Kosice) is that they were really Soviet planes. They simply missed the target- they wanted to raid Eperjes (Presov) which was in Slovakia even at that time. Slovakia was taking part in the Barbarossa operation from the start. Other possibility is that Slovakian bombers wanted to cause diplomatic turmoil. What seems to be sure: they were neither Germans nor Roumanians- none of them had airplanes of that type at that moment or if yes, they had no time to train pilots. One more thing: I am not sure whether it can be justified or just a rumour but Soviets has offered a joint attack on Roumania and Hungarian politicians (prime minister Teleki) rejected it because Hungary wanted to solve everything with the approval of the Western community (the former Entente). That's why they also rejected attacking Czechoslowakia together with the Third Empire.

A very informative and entertaining video, and a big like for you for using the historical city/town names! Only a small correction about the pictures at 1:39 I think that was shot during September 1940 in Northern Transsylvania, you can see the hills behind the soldiers. The Bácska is a completely flat area + the trees have leaves so it is more likely it wasnt taken in early April. About the bombing of Kassa, the most probably theory is that the Soviets bombed it by mistake, they wanted to bomb some radio station in Eperjes (Presov). I read somewhere that the two cities had a very similar appearance from the sky and they are relative close to each other + maybe the Soviet pilots didnt have a correct map, that shows, that Kassa is now beloging to Hungary, not Slovakia anymore. But it is also possible that Romania bombed the town to drag Hungary into the war so it wont station its troops in Northern Transsylvania. Romania had the airplane type that time. Or it was a disguised German action for the similar reason.

Many people think so that Prime Minister Pal Teleki did not committed suicide really. The real story was as follows : An officer of the German Army that wanted to attack Yugoslavia at that time who had a strict order to get permission from Teleki at all costs - he feared that Teleki will refuse to allow German Army to march across Hungarian territory to Yugoslavia. So he simply shoot down the Hungarian Prime Minister. The German officer was the last visitor on the day of death of Teleki at the residence of Prime Minister. Hungarian secret service was not allowed to declare that friendly German army officer killed Hungarian Prime Minister so a declaration was officially issued to the public that it was a suicide and the spot of murder was duly arranged. Still nowadays in Slovakia or Romania you can count millions of hungarian speakers. In Transilvânia for exemple I found a town were people spoken just hungarian. And historically Hungary is related with the German area. Politically and ideologically. Still nowadays hungarians are on the right side... Do you know why? For the Holomodor. Try to search what was and why arrived. Bolcheviques were for a big part with Jewish roots. Lenin, Trotsky, Cederbaum were just some of the leaders. I want say that Hungary paid too much. Trianon was a crime. Like was a crime the street choice for Hungary after WWII. A forced communism. As like was a crime the invasion of Hungary from URSS during the rebellion for freedom and democracy during the '50s. Now all talk in a wrong way about Orban. But Orban is a leader chosen by 70% of Hungarians. Don't forget it. And his political views are clear. It's one of the few politicians able to declare mr. Schwartz (Soros) a criminal. Because he is a criminal. Why I say this? I could say it because the behavior used against my country (Italy) in first 90s were he destroyed our Lira and economy, because he is behind the mass immigration but no. He is a criminal for his youth. He was a spy for SS. He was able to sell other jews to obtain money and protection.

Hitler pretty much had plans to invade Soviet Union sooner or later, the same as he had plans to attack USA no matter did USA take part to war or not. Those times were politically unstable, there were lots of ideologies around and all of them wanted to be the one in power.
@fazole
@fazole 3 года назад
@@duhni4551 Where is the evidence Hitler had plans to attack the USA? It's a preposterous idea; Germany never planned to even attack England. They had no long range heavy bombers until the very end of the war--and only 2 were built. Hitler wanted the USSR so he could achieve autarky, obtain more land and exterminate slavs and others. The USA was to be Japan's problem. FDR ordered the USN to aid the British in finding and sinking U-boots and he declared almost the entire N. Atlantic as US territorial waters. Hitler just decided it was time to end the pretense of US neutrality and declare war. This is all verifiable.

@@HistoryHustle It is important to realize all that nostalgia for Austria-Hungary happened after the dissolution of that union and the later crises after Trianon. At the time (before 1914), the so-called " '48 supporters" won the elections several times, requiring quite anti-democratic and illegal strategies from the Habsburg supporters in order to avoid those people forming a government and trying to reduce the power of the Habsburgs over Hungary. The period after 1900 is quite interesting in that regard, with the constant scandals and tension.

Loved this video prof Stefan! All of your videos show in depth and important parts of history that are rarely discussed in text books these days. My educated guess on the bombing of Kassa is that it was staged by the axis powers and most likely Germany to look like Russian aggression to give the Hungarians the green light on joining Barbarossa. As you said yourself there is really no strategic reasoning for Russia to bomb Kassa themselves but there is for axis powers to ignite a campaign on the Hungarian front. Just like the attack on the radio tower that was staged on the border with Poland by Germany to start that invasion.

@@nickpapagiorgio5056 No, Romania was the perpetrator. Those kind of bombs used were inavailable either German and Hungarian military stocks, but only still available in Romania (as a consequence of military armaments remained since the end of the WWI, as Romania dealt with the Russians). This was revealed by a former Hungarian military personnal who lives today in Germany. The Romanian motives were: if the crusade of the Soviet Union would fail, without Hungary's participation Romania may loose the remaining part of Transylvania, as the Soviet union would not retaliate Hungary (neither Germans as Hungary was not expected to participate). In case Hungary is dragged into the war, two options would be possible: 1, they win together with Romania, so the situation cannot get worse for Romania as it was then 2, if they loose together with Hungary as well situation cannot get worse for them, since there is still the option to switch sides and gain back Northern Transylvania. Point!
@aliengalaxy6096
@aliengalaxy6096 Год назад
I think Romania bombed Kassa, explanation: Transylvania belonged to Hungary 1000 years long and the Dictate of Trianon moved Transylvania and many other Hungarian lands unjustly to new countries like Romania. Russia did not sign the Dictate of Trianon. (It is very ironic but these countries also signed the Dictate of Trianon: Nicaragua, Panama, Cuba, Siam (Thailand)… Hungary had never any business with these very far countries, but the Entente involved them to participate in this crime.) Vladimir Lenin said: “The treaty was forced down their throat, but this is a usurious treaty, the treaty of murderers and butchers… unprecedented, predacious treaty… this is no treaty, these are conditions that scampsmen dictate with knives in their hands to unprotected victims.” We know Stalin promised full Transylvania back to Hungary if Hungary is out from the war. Basically, Hungary wanted to be out because Hungary had a problem with Romania and not with the Soviet Union and not with the USA, UK, or France. Historically Hungary was a German ally and communism was very far ideology from the Hungarian soul, almost nobody liked it. Hungarians had already very bad experiences in 1919 when the communist took the power for some months. The Vienna Awards got some justice to Hungary, Hungary got back many territories where the majority were Hungarians. In 1940 the Second Vienna Award got back Northern Transylvania, to Hungary, however the Hungarian army was ready, Horthy wanted to take all Transylvania back. But Romania was a German ally too so Hitler did not support Horthy with this plan, Hitler wanted to make a favor for both allies. The bombing of Kassa took place on 26 June 1941, when still unidentified aircraft conducted an airstrike on the city of Kassa. This attack became the pretext for the government of Hungary to declare war on the Soviet Union the next day, 27 June. We suppose the attack made by Romanian aircraft because I don't think the Soviet Union wanted another enemy, and in the beginning, Germany also do not count Hungarian participation in his war against the Soviet Union, and if Germany would ask Hungary to join probably Hungary would join without any provocation. So only Romania who has benefited from this action, knew if the Soviet Union win then Transylvania could go back to Romania. If Hungary would have switched side during World War 2, probably Northern Transylvania would have remained in Hungary. But the Hungarians did not like Bolshevism and they fought against Bolshevism to the end. And betraying an ally is far behavior from the Hungarian soul. For example, Romania betrayed his allies 7 times in sixty years (and many times also in medieval times). If Hungary did not withstand the Bolshevism probably Austria, full Germany, and even farther the Soviets would occupy much more lands to convert them to communist countries.

From Hungarian perspective the only regretable thing remotely clsoe to this time period was to getting into the Austro-Hungarian Compromise in 1867 - everything else from that point on was a one way railway with no detour up until 1989. This include Hungary's participation against the USSR - 70% of Hungary's export AND import was directed toward Germany (and since Hungary lost all of its natural resources and access to the sea in 1920 NOT siding with Germany would just turned the nation in a sage kingdom - like North Korea is right now). The military leadership was made up by mostly germans (and most of them was part of NSDP's political organization which aimed to "unit germans abrad in support of the motherland", and Pál Teleki (the man who commited suicide) himself wrote many times in her diary to "the hungarian military act like a shadow government". Romania on the other hand fought for its own survival too. Their just lost without a single shot half of Transylvania (which was the entire point for them to participate in the Great War). Their had to also surrender Bessarabia for the Soviets (again, without a single shot). And their had to surrender some land to Bulgaria too. Germany literally strongarmed them into the war, their also had no choice. And the ironic thing is Romania had no choice, because their put Hungary into a position where Hungarians had no choice either (and Germany could hold us as the stick to beat Romania into submission). Italy was on the other hand been a mistery for me for a LONG while. Their given upon their great relation with the UK, their could have EASILY stayed out of the war and we know Mussolini didnt actually had a good opinion about Hitler either. I never understood why their joined the war in the first place.

Historically speaking Hungary did not join Germany in the initial attack on Yugoslavia, it actually refused the request by Germany. However when the Yugoslav Government collapsed due to the general advance of the German Army, Hungary did invade to protect the ethnic Hungarians living in the Bácska Region that was formally part of the Kingdom of Hungary. The Prime Minister Mr. Pal Teleki did commit suicide as soon as the Regent authorized the entry of Hungarian troops into this Region, which was technically no longer part of Hungary, but it was heavily populated by ethnic Hungarians. But as explained, there was no resistance to this invasion due to the fact that the Yugoslav Government no longer controlled the area due to their collapse. There was a power vacuum in the Country and citizens of former Hungary had to be protected. It is also true that this Region was subsequently was annexed by Hungary.

To provide the casus belli. But frankly, in situations like this, usually the country being attacked either asks for reparations or maybe strikes back in about equal measure. Obviously, a full fledged invasion is not justified due to a single bombing. I have a feeling it's the second. As usual, Hungary once more joined the "wrong side of history". Our faith is either to join the wrong side or getting obliterated. The country is in an unfortunate political position. Right in-between the West and the East. Has been all throughout history. Very good and well done for your presentation observations. As a life-long student of history and especially of WW2 and 20th Century politics and social upheavals I have the following reflections, observations and questions: ( i ) thoughts and surprise at the unsolved mystery of the bombing of the Hungarian town : without wishing to award any credit points to the USSR - we know of their capabilities as regards Finland and Poland (Katyn) - but I think they were to much embedded with their Ribbentrop/Molotov Pact…even impatient with their wish to do more trade with the Third Reich… Frankly, it seems to me too much like a Nazi cook-up along the lines of their invasion of Poland, leaving dead bodies around dressed up in Polish uniforms ie bits and pieces of bombs with USSR indications of manufacture, and all to get the Hungarians on board for the attack on Russia. ( ii ) Both Romania and Hungary were rife with rival fascist parties, Romania more so than Hungary, and this despite or as a result of King Carol’s impatience of democratic politics - parliamentary democracy’s darkest hours everywhere because of inability to take resolute action to stem rightful expectations of the poorer classes for better “rewards” for their pains….; then how come Carol “accepted “ the Hitlerite “settlement diktat” of the Transylvanian province in favour of Hungary? ( nb right, the area population was largely Hungarian but the Province historically reflected the old Roman Province of Dacia of which Romania prided itself of being the inheritrix). Somewhere in my memory I think I read that Hitler quelled Romanian objections with promises of territorial reward compensations ie retrieval of Northern Bukorovnia and Bessarabia taken ( at least the latter ) with Hitler’s assent by USSR and the former taken beneath his nose ie without his consent….and other areas of Russia with Romania’s contributory participation in the forthcoming invasion against USSR Bolshevism….All right, Romania was “geographically out on a limb”, and few plus no one could help her oppose the ambitions of one so determined as Hitler at the time riding high with his triumph over the Western democracies, France beaten to collaborative, submission, Britain on our own with Empire, yet with barely an army to speak of on her side of the Channel, and the rest taken up in battles against the Italians in both East and North Africa, with the whole of the Vichy French Empire thereabouts ready to oppose if not to even assist Italy and Germany should they demand this…which they did, in Syria, willing to help Germany weaken Britain in Iraq….and later willing to let Japanese submarines shelter - and threaten - South Africa, with their supportive Zero fighter bombers flying unchallenged over Vichy French Madagascar. ( iii ) Your mention of the Prime Minister of Hungary who committed suicide…I had never read of this before…Of what political persuasion was he, given that Hungary too, like Romania, was riven by fascist governmental groups? ( iv ) Unless I have missed something, you make no mention of the counter-stroke of Yugoslav military circles against their Prince Regent Paul’s alignment to Hitler’s invitation of “ordinary ie not unfriendly co-operation” between the kingdom of Yugoslavia whose King Carol-like authoritarian strong-arm manner King Alexander had been brutally assassinated when on visit to France….[ by Croatian thugs in the pay of Mussolini ] - perhaps it was this that finally persuaded Carol to withdraw while yet alive than fall heroic victim to the fascist hyena…like Alexander…But to Yugoslavia in 1941 ….the USSR had but a week or so before concluded a pact of co-operation and mutual assistance with the Kingdom, and apparently this had got up Hitler’s nose since the Russians hadn’t asked his opinion, let alone his permission. What are your thoughts on this? ( v ) In similar vein but further away, Bulgaria which had also “retrieved” its pre1914-18 Dobruja region, was proving not to be totally warm as regards Hitler’s plans, formulating that the Country would never ever war against Russia…but it did against Greece “retrieving “ its Thracian province and the second largest city of Greece Salonica by its Axis alignment with Hitler against both Yugoslavia and Greece. ( vi ) Certainly the Balkans Region is a motley, rough and sticky area for which the Ottomans and Turkey have much to blame… [ and the Turks are still at it, leading they are “Europeans”… Your thoughts on this? ( vi ) Finally the Hungarian leader managed to conclude not an unreasonable peace agreement with Stalin, but at a terrible cost to its Jewish population who had somehow managed to be left alone ….until then…. ( vii ) the Nazis wreaked havoc and terror upon the Hungarians - in punishment for their change of heart… and later the Russians would add their capacity for evil doing totally, wilfully, or blindly doing harm to decent souls doing their best, like the Swedish diplomat whose fate has never been acknowledged by any of the present Russian hierarchy… Thanks for your comments and good wishes for success. ps re the bombing of Kassa, given this took place on 26th June 1941, I revise my point ( i ) given the state of war between Hungary and the USSR that it must have been a Soviet bombing attack…

Hi Dennis, Sorry for the late reply. Here my response. ( i ) I understand. ( ii ) Thanks for sharing this. More on Romania in the future. ( iii ) From what I understand is that he did this to make sure Hungary's top politician(s) didn't want this but they were kinda forced by Germany to invade Yugoslavia. Hungary was a conatitutional monarchy with the Christian Democrat party firmly in control, with Social Democrats in second place. Fascist and Communist parties both existed, but both were very minor, and occasionally outlawed. Hungary did see a high turnover of prime ministers, but at no point was it ruled by decree directly by Horthy. The takeover of the fascist arrow cross party only happened as a german puppet gowernment with assistamce by the nazos, after the nazi occupation in late autumn 1944. Hungary was quiet simply not a fascist country, and the fascist movement was not especially widespread or popular. Most foreign policy focused on revision of the peace treaty of trianon to return hungarian majority territories, and reproachment with the west, which was seen as the way for economic prosperity, industrialization, and political security. Hungary was seeking a defensive alliance with Great Britain as late as 1941.

There is a legend that the Soviet pilots who bombed Kassa had only outdated maps on their planes on which Kassa (then Kosice) was still part of (Czecho)slovakia and none of the maps showed the new borders of the First Vienna Award. So the Soviets believed that they were bombing Slovak targets (the USSR was already at war with Slovakia). But this is probably just a myth. I haven't found much info about it and I only heard this story from a friend. True or false, this incident (or Soviet mistake) was believed as an act of clear Soviet aggression and convinced the Hungarian government and the people that the war against the USSR is justified which resulted in the death of one million Hungarian citizens during the war.

Sounds solid theory. After all, Russians have issues to know their borders even today, given they keep flying in Finnish and Swedish air space every now and then =D

The planes that bombed Kassa belonged to the USSR - it is a widely accepted fact by historians in Hungary. The fregments of the bombs were inspected and they had Russian markings on them. It is also belived by most historans that this bombing was a navigational mistake and not Hungary was the target originally. Germany had little interest getting Hungary into the war: the Hungarian Armed Forces were weak, the war against the USSR seemed to be a fast and easy campaign at the beginning. Even with these bombings, joining the war against the USSR was not neceserry - more relaxed diplomatic action would have been enough. Unfortunatly most of the political elit were "German oriented" and they feared that they might lose the (re)gained territories, if the Romanians support Germany's war much more than Hungary does. Germany were undefeated until that point while the USSR seem to be weak according the Red Army's performence in Finland. It seemed to be a low risk enterprise, so the government pushed Horthy to declare war. It was not that, hard as Horthy was a die-hard anti-bolshevik.

Maybe the bombing of the city of Kassa/Košice/Kaschau/Kascha was meant in a similar way like the Germans did with the radio station of Gliwice/Gleiwitz in 1939 but not as an open told propaganda. With the cyrillic letters on the bombers the Hungarians should be made to believe that it was an attack by the USSR without a declaration of war and so convince them that it should be only an act of self defense of Hungary in attacking the USSR.

It is true that the Bombing of Kassa did create a lot of speculation as to who did the Bombing, who was responsible for this aggressive provocation. For the record there was major suspicion that Rumanian planes may have been responsible, due to the fact that the planes did fly in a South Easterly direction towards the Rumanian Border. As History Hustle explained, Rumania was in the process of committing a large force for the invasion of the Soviet Union on the side of Germany, but at the same time it also feared that Hungary may invade Southern Transylvania which was still part of Rumania. Thus it was in her interest that Hungary should also commit a large force against the Soviets in order to reduce substantial Hungarian Army concentration or capability which may be used against her.

if its Germany they could have marked the planes in russian colors to fully furnish the false flag operation, the unmarked part is very baffling to me. it sounds like the attacker just wanted to bomb a target without any repercussions or fallout ,maybe Germany wasn't confident in its relationship with hungary so this was like a silent warning of what they are capable of, or maybe it really was the russians and they had a strategic bombing target but didn't wanna mess with the fragile relationship they had with Hugary
