I love northwest, north-mid, and west Ohio. Farms, freedom, Amish, few cities, and good rights like constitutional carry... I heard by Pennsylvania border and cities nearby are "rougher" areas though, much like how Columbus, Cincinnati and Dayton areas are.
Wow you guys are so brave it’s bit overwhelming to think about trying to build again especially now with shortages and high prices on everything. I doubt I would find something already in place with what I need good luck to all of you guys my thoughts are with you
@@SavageAirguns northeast ohio where I am is also very beautiful, I'm literally feet away from lake Erie (out my front door and a shot walk), that's how close I am. I grew up here on the lake, and in this general cleveland area (I'm in the suburbs to the east of cleveland), lake Erie is just part of our upbringing, we are just used to it, then sometimes I think, how big these great lakes are and how much fresh water they supply. But I'm giving all this up to move to beautiful west virginia in appalachia Ohio is a beautiful state, but west virginia is breathtaking!!
It's been a year, but just came across this channel. As a previous Florida resident looking for some place to spend the rest of my life, why did you choose West Virginia if I may ask? And which part?
Welcome to West Virginia 🙏. Most of us who are country folk are kind, just be sure not to be walking on others property, not tolerated. Most people are good neighbors and are willing to give a hand without being all up in your space. And our winters are not to bad. State roads are usually tended to when it snows but county roads might not be see a plow for a few days. We just prepare for the winter. Oh and don’t let your dog chase deer. The hunters don’t like it. I have lived in the eastern panhandle all my life and I’m 45 minuets away from the nearest Walmart. Love it❤️
@@WVMtMOMA sad but true and you can't blame the hunters. My dad was in law enforcement and he never fined a hunter for shooting a dog for chasing a deer. He always said the owners knew to put their dogs on a lead or in a kennel
@@tomconcitis9322 high quality bituminous coal especially in southern counties of WV. And while deep tunnel mining does still happen, my understanding is that mountaintop removal for mining coal has becoming increasingly common, sadly.
WV has a strong independent side. There’s a reason that when we seceded from VA they didn’t try to come into the mountains! Also stop telling everyone how awesome we are, we don’t want more city folks in here! We worked hard to cultivate the lies about WV!🤣
Ed, I'm so glad to hear that you are happy with your choice in picking West Virginia. I'm glad to have you as a close neighbor (I live just across the state line in the south western part of Virginia). Best of luck with your new homestead. I think you made the right choice. Hopefully we can meet each other some day. I share your love for the animals.
I knew you were close to me lol.. Over those mountains toward Virginia is where my homestead is, I'm about 45 minutes to an hour from you. Your place is looking really good.
I was born in WV and I still have family living there. When I go and visit, it’s quiet, nothing is going on like elsewhere. When I left the state in my youth, I swore that I would not return, well I am. I will retire in 2 or 3 years and I will begin my search in March 2023. The reasons that you chose WV are mine as well.
Ed one of the good things about where you live at is your roadway that leads to the main highway looks like pasture land nobody would think about looking back where you're at that would be one of my thoughts
You made an awesome choice on location. My parents both were born and raised there. My dad in Wayne Cty and mom from Boone Cty. I spent summers there in Wayne with my grandma cuz she lived alone. My grandpa passed of black lung when I was 12. I loved it down there in the country. We rode horses 🐎 all the time. Can't do that here in the city. The air smells better. Dont have all the city pollution. Its wonderful.
Thank you and you answered my questions whether you know it or not. I love New York State and you are right no sun there’s snowflakes in the area and chilled may forget it however now I have too much on where I am I do miss the country and the mountains I lived in the mountains. And now I’m so old I feel a little nervous about just going someplace new all by myself and starting up anyway thank you for telling us all about how you got your property that was great good luck God bless
Me again I’m sorry for all the mixup on words I don’t know what happens when I press go everything changes. I meant to say New York has snow from November right through till May although in May it’s just flakes in the air still no sunshine. New York is beautiful but I can’t continue to pay the taxes etc. there. That’s why I came south. I was kind of sorry I didn’t know how to find property like yours, so I just followed one of my children. However I miss the country in the mountains my own chickens etc. I have not found like-minded people in my area either and it’s not for not trying
Oh yeah I hear your heart in this & all your vids ,when you're in W.VA homestead. Just be still & breathe in that mountain air is peace & tranquility. Very beautiful land you picked! Give Hella some belly rubs. Have a great weekend Ed🇺🇲❤🇺🇲
once youre moved, you can run 50-75 sheep or whatever a guy like Greg Judy figures the right stocking rate would be, and you'll build the soil in no time in the meadows.
Retired in 2016 n moved to west Tennessee from ny state best move I made love it here n the weather is awesome here winters month n half long i hunt n enjoy hunting in just a shirt n no heavy coat
thanks for vid, love WV...just something to point out...you were outta breath fast bud..lol...prepping for food and having land is important but we gotta prepare our health too.. if shtf, we are going to need to be in better shape to deal with stress and to work harder etc. God Bless us all to what is coming.
Beautiful property. Clay soil can be amended. You have to work in leaves, grass, coffee grinds and top soil. Restaurants and coffee spots will save their grinds for gardner's if you give them a container and come pick them up regularly. A friend of ours who has clay soil mixes leaves and cut grass in a 55 gallon trash can then uses his weed wacker inside it to shred it. Then he adds the soil and coffee grinds and mixes it with a shovel. This mix gets worked in the garden plot along with composted vegetables and manure. This resolved the bad soil. He refreshes it over the winter and keeps about 8 inches deep of amended soil and can grow everything.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned how pure the air quality is in West Virginia due to our many mountains and loads of trees. And let's not forget the beautiful mountains views and outdoor activities for everyone. Welcome to the Wild, Wonderful West Virginia, also known as the Mountain Mama state, and watch out for those very and unexpected country sharp curves and roads.
Thank you for allowing us around, raining for buying it. I agree with having more space between neighbors. I'm always surprised when people try to tell me NW Montana doesn't get enough sun for a solar system. Ever since the gas hike I've been relying on mine. Wind generator next. Take care
You have a great place with so much nature and beauty!! I love it!! I would love to live in the country, rather than a city, but at 70, I think I'm too old to make that happen. Also, don't know how much good prepping would do at my age. Saw one comment asking you how long before it happens and if you would have time to build your house. Would be curious to know what you think for a timeline!! To me it is hard to say. Thanks for making me do SOME prepping, like stocking up some food, etc. Think I need to do more. I appreciate you and your knowledge!! God bless you and your family, including Hella. She is such a sweet, loving girl!! Thanks!! 🤗❤️🙏
Our criteria for this place, I wanted as far from town as possible, way above flood level, flat enough for 2 homes, and very rural. My son wanted 20 min commute to work. It took 2 wks to find flat enough!! LOL! Sandy loam soil, but raised beds fixed that problem. Our winter was cold for us, 1 snow fall 4"s gone in 3 days. Good thing because we cant get home at all when its slick, so we stay home. DIL gets a hotel room in town, sometimes work pays for it. If we did a do over, we would be 10 miles further out with better soil and grass.
WV. Wild and Wonderful. A little bit of Heaven. If you haven't been to WV You should come visit. stay away from the big cities. Moved here 8 months ago and would not want to live anywhere else. Mild winters and lots of sunshine. Low taxes and the friendliest people I have encountered.I LOVE it here.
From WV and thought I’d never move back after 30 yrs in the CLT area but am seriously considering a remote homestead in SE WV. Love the video and exactly what I’m looking for.
Congratulations on your score! I tend to think the naysayers about the beautiful state of W.V. have never been there. I'm hoping to find land there within the next year or two.
This is a great video. Thanks so much for posting. I'm in Kanawha County. While it's not beautiful like your location it's still WVa and there are advantages to this area too.
You made wise decision, grew up in DC till 12, went to WVa and fell in love with whole state, , stayed till 21, been back a few times, , your at the top of the mountain, you'll have day lite till the other mountain gets in the way, beautiful piece of land, hell, if need to you could build a hotel in the side of one of them there hills, bless you
Ed, it's your life! I'm happy for you that you found this great property. No place is perfect. Im so tired of the negative comments that some people leave on your videos. Keep up the good work Ed and of course Hella. Stay safe
My great Aunt lived near Big Stone Gap, think your Greenhouse in NY might fair well on your property! She was tickled pick when she told her sisters that when it got real cold she'd camp out in her Dome..the expressions on her sisters faces still make me smile..they were raised in Cincinnati during the Depression all 8 of them.
I'm from Missouri and I own 40 acres in the country with a 2500 Sq foot home and 2 car garage and my taxes are 433$ a year and Missouri is open carry and conceal and carry without a permit. Castle law. Missouri is a very good state to buy and its in the middle of the USA and we are the second most state for caves and we have the largest spring in the entire world and springs evetywhere. But it's very very humid and hot and winters aren't to bad cheap land still
So true. Hence the outrageously high incidents of cancer in W North Carolina and Eastern Tenn. Oak Ridge and the whole atom bomb development wastes just get trapped in those mountains.
Great video! I have been seriously considering looking for land in West Virginia for a retirement property. Currently living in Massachusetts but absolutely love the country and outdoors. The laid back lifestyle where neighbors actually look after each other has the appeal of the old days that I like. Any areas of the state you could recommend that are cheap but also not 40 miles from doctors, hospitals, etc? Again, Great video👍
Former Mass resident here now living in the heart of New Hampshire, gettin close to retirement so winters are not my friend , May look south to WV land too ♥️🙏 best of luck . My best friend from school lives on the border in Virginia and her area is amazingly beautiful 😻
It’s probably the best place in the country to pick actually. It’s a long trip up that mountain to outsiders and it’s so many different places to hide out in damn near plain site if you wanted to.
Hey Ed! You dnt owe ANYONE an explanation. Not even God because he alrdy KNOWS your past, present and future. He made you so the only thing we can do for the haters is pray for them. God bless you good sir and keep doing what your doing 🙏 ❤ 🤍 💙
Please don't laugh at them over their winter. Nothing we hate more than Yankees moving South & telling us how to do things or laughing at is for complaining about snow. Remember that most southern towns don't stock tons of salt to spread on roads for snow & ice. Just be nice.
So, my question is since you are basically starting over- get a small house built, get gardens and fruit trees planted, etc- Do you feel like you will run out of time before something big happens? And you would be stuck living in the trailer, with not a lot of infrastructure? The reason I'm asking is I'm sort of in the same boat, here in the Ozarks, looking for the right land and then starting a small homestead. Plus I'm over 60, so some challenges there too. Many channels seem to be saying "it's too late if you're just moving now. You will run out of time before the economy crashes," etc. Wondering your thoughts on that. Thanks. And you truly have found a lovely place to start over again!
Plan for the worse but hope for the best! Yes something big might happen tomorrow to shut everything down, but don't let that stop you because nothing might happen for a long time. Yes starting on everything years ago would have been cheaper, but keep improving your situation daily as you can
@@markmelton8919 Exactly! I can't help that I didn't start on this homesteading journey 2, 5, or 10+ years ago. I'm still living in the travel trailer looking for raw land! But I am a gardener, and been collecting many seeds, tools, books and even fruit bearing trees like pears, persimmon, mulberry, figs, grape vines etc. Hoping to still get some blueberry bushes this fall. But we all do the best we can, where we are at, with what we've got, right??
Fact of the matter is, you don’t owe anyone an explanation of why you chose to make that your homestead location. Those who think you do need to just piss off. They’re the ones who’ll never do anything about anything. Stay strong, god speed.
I think you picked the best spot really. The states SC, TN, GA that are South of you are way to hot and they are having an influx of people. Less population is better on so many levels. Nuclear radiation was something I have thought of also.
You gave a good explaination of the VA mountains protecting you from an East Coast nuclear blast. However weather patterns in the US flow from west to east. So what protects you from bombs or missles exploding to the west of your land? And there are military installations and thus targets that could affect your ability to sustain your family.
Senator Manchin is pronounced like the big house or “mansion” Our hope is that he will continue to be his own man although some are concerned with his support of the newest spending legislation
Hi Ed, love watching your videos, have done for years. Just a bit curious why you told the lady at the supermarket that she doesn't need to wear a mask.I thought you were someone who didn't care about what other people do as long as they don't interfere with you.take care.love the new property.
West central PA here. Your place looks a Lot like my neck of the woods. In general, we should both be okay if somebody pops off a nuke, in the best of all possible worlds. Modern doctrine, though, targets military operational and command and control facilities, not population centers. At the best of times, nukes are not known for their pinpoint precision. "Meh. Twenty-five miles? Close enough." You might check on some old fallout maps from the Cold War. We could both get a bit of fallout from Midwestern missile-silo debris. Otherwise, it's a great place to ride out any kind of apocalypse most of the time.
I think it's a good move man forget about what the nae Sayers say cheap taxes lot of woods seems like a lot of wildlife probably fill you freezer up with meat you're already getting into going West Virginia to my home town country roads country roads take me home
