Why Did I Sell My 2021 Diesel Jeep Gladiator Rubicon? Lots of the reasons! The main one was because I wanted a full size truck and go back to a Wrangler.

Really awesome and real video. Just bought a used 21 used JL rubicon diesel wrangler and this video changed my thought of how to build it. It’s a daily so thinking I’ll stick with 35-37s and keep it mostly stock while also allowing me to still hit the trails. Bought mine used with low miles because I was downgrading also. Rather save $20k in my pocket and build it up at my own pace and financial situation.

Yeah I have 37’s on my 18 JLUR and love it. I won’t go with 40’s again on a daily. Doesn’t make sense. Especially with the price of 40’s in today’s market! Appreciate you watching!

Dang, I hate hearing about people having issues with the diesel gladiator. 25k on mine and no issues yet. They did finally come out with a recall on the def issues. I think if I were to have issues it would loose all those parts on the trail. Good luck to you on your new overlanding rig.

I avoided the diesel on purpose and got the gasser. I got the Sport S and left it on the stock tires and as a daily driver I love it! Great mpg, smooth ride…I look forward to my 40 mile commute every single day. I am really small on my changes though as a result. Tonneau cover, 33” at most, etc.

I still love the diesel. The I’ve owned lots of wranglers. Now that I’m back in a full-size truck. I’m never going back to a mid-size. I’ll get a wrangler and build the crap out of it.

The great thing about Jeep is if you end up not liking something you can trade it in for something else, or rather sell it.. I have a Mustang so if I bought a Gladiator gas / diesel / whatever and I don't like it I can probably sell it and get back probably most of what I paid for it and then buy something else. Coz that's my thing I dunno whether I wanna get gas or diesel or even I have been thinking maybe Wrangler might be good. I really want the truck but will I not really use it / want it after I get it. and I think my endgame is to get a Patriot camper to tow to use for Overlanding.. that way I can keep the truck bed bare and not have tons of weight on it and I can .... "run through the dunes" anytime I want without having to take all this shizz off the truck. heh :)

I own several nice vehicles but I still reach for the keys to my 3L JT on 39KM3s nearly every day I spent a lot extra to use aluminum bumpers, rockers, control arms, belly skid & steering. Its now got an ultimate 44 front & trussed rear and 4.56 gearing. I really think thats as high, heavy and usable daily before it becomes a toy like you described. Swapped on a friends 40” nittos with beadlocks the ride suffered quite a bit and there was a big diff in power delivery & mpg. Flat highway at 70 on bfgs = 24.5 real mpg. Nittos = 19-20 and stopping is way worse. I may buy a set of 37 Baja boss ATs to run daily for a little more quiet and better inclement weather duties but I still smile in the mornings and look back

Yeah I agree with you, when you go to 40s Drivability goes down substantially. I mean you can’t judge the when you but 40s on. Any truck other then maybe a 3500 with suffer.

Hey man I gotta say I’m so thankful I came across this. I currently have a Rubicon JK and my life calls for a truck bed so much that I’m unfortunately having to make the switch and Iv been looking at the gladiator to stay apart of the Jeep family but like you said family towing ect unfortunately I have to go the 2500 route and just build it out for the trails as well and get a toy later down the road. Happy Trailing brotha

I have a red '76 chief and went through the same question as you... Should i change the color/look since I'm doing body work and upgrading so many things... I decided to keep the original color/look as much as possible and am so glad I did. When i drive it, people recognize it because of its original appearance. I've seen modernized ones and they look confusing. I always get compliments when i drive it into town. Keep the red/black style!

Good job talking about how people mostly show off vehicles they are indebted for. The fact is that most people lease their vehicles because they can’t afford to buy it.

Channels name is Max Overland, not Max Gladiator. Any build out is cool to watch no matter the platform. Changing one’s mindset about debt is a life changer. I’m 49 and always stressed about debt, but a few years ago I decided I had enough of making others rich off my debt. I paid off my 2020 Glad Rubi in Gator Green with gas engine and all my student loans and credit cards. Great feeling. Agree that a daily driver on 40’s as a Realtor only would make sense selling in back country! 🤭

The only vehicle I ever had to force a lemon law on was a 2017 4 runner TRD pro. I liked the way it looked but I found it poorly sprung, the brakes barely adequate and of course it had demons they could not exercise. I haven’t been back to the dealership besides a free oil change in my gladiator and I am not kind to it. I know this is just anecdotal but according to internet lore a black hole is supposed to form when a Jeep proves reliable and a Yota gets towed in to a dealer 3x but here we are

If you go back into a Wrangler I would suggest a 3.6L. My Rubicon and my buddy’s JL’s are VERY RELIABLE!
@MaxOverland
@MaxOverland 2 года назад
Yep that’s the plan! Get a wrangler with a 3.6L. Build everything up as I go. Down the road I’ll put an LS in it. I had the 3.6 in my first gladiator and my wrangler before that and liked it in both vehicles.
@00ninja00
@00ninja00 2 года назад
@@MaxOverland I wouldn’t go LS in the newer stuff, only in the TJ/LJ platform. As good as they got the 392 working in the JLs, that’s the route I’d go if swapping a new JL.

So you bought a vehicle that didn't fits your needs. Putting big tires on is your fault not jeeps. I have 37 on my daily. I get 21 mpg still. The trick is keeping it light . And no engine mods.
@MaxOverland

Part of me wonders if I should of dropped tire size. Just hated wheeling it on anything less that 40’s. Ended going back to a wrangler. I could on the same trails in Michigan with my old JKu on 37’s that I could on my JTR with 40’s. End of the day. I wanted back in a wrangler.

@@MaxOverland40s are cool but not as a daily driver. Truthfully you should have had two sets of tires . 40 for overloading and 35s wirh street tires for daily . I just finished the rubicon on 37. No issues. Amd it was loaded. I put metalcloak diff covers on it and I o have there 3.5 inch gamchanger. Steerarts front end and brace. Ats fox shock dampner. I think you just built it wrong. Your jeep looked cool. But made it not practical. Mine Drives great and wife drives it 20 mon to work daily and lives it too. . My jeep is on the dirtroad journey RU-vid channel. There rubicon series and there movie trip and a few others. So you can see ot how it performs. And I still average 21 mpg.

Got 37s on my JTR. But if I ever overland full time and especially outside of the US, I’d definitely go with 35s. Just makes more sense and it’s way more realistic to run 35s if actually using it daily overlanding full time.
@mattbrew11
@mattbrew11 2 года назад
I have 39s on my diesel with a lot of care to keep weight down and regeared to 4.56. Depending on your need for large humans this can still be a 1-2 kid daily but I definitely would not go to 40s > 4” of lift or to beadlocks. I can still get over 24mpg the highway cruising at 70 and its at least 20% worse with 40s. The diesel is great but its a big ask to push real 40s I may try some baja boss 37s and swap tires for trips but overall I still love driving it every time

No the rubicon will clear 35’s stock. Shouldn’t need anything unless you put the wrong off-set rims on.

I didn’t get the diesel because I knew it was going to have issues. FCA claims it’s a redone version of the same motor that was in the Cherokee before, and back then, it had tons of issues. I’m glad I never even considered the diesel knowing it was going to be problematic. And everyone who has the diesel JL and JT, have issues, some more some less but still had issues of some sort. Sticking with the 3.6 JTR, I knew it was a motor that’s been tried and true since ‘12. And I’m glad it worked out as predicted, zero issues so far with 22k miles.
