Why Did Jesus Change Water into Wine?

In the brief account of Jesus’ miracle of water into wine, several key OT themes and episodes emerge: three days, wedding, Jewish purification jars, ritual water, a profusion of fine wine, and an allusion to Pharaoh and Joseph. When we shine Genesis 41 and 49, Leviticus 11, Isaiah 24-25, and some extra-biblical literature on this miracle, what becomes visible is Jesus as the new Bridegroom, the better Joseph, here to signal the arrival of the messianic age of the new covenant, complete with the equivalent of about 150 gallons of wine! Join ‪@chadbird1517‬ in “Reading the Gospels through Hebrew Eyes,” as he explores John 2:1-11.

Might there also be additional significance in the fact that it was ritual purification water that was transformed into wine, perhaps foreshadowing the Last Supper, when Jesus took wine and said "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins," thus looking ahead to a time when ritual purification water would no longer be needed, because now purification for uncleanliness would be accomplished by the blood of Jesus?
@chadbird1517

Yes, within the broader context of the Gospels, that is true. It is hinted at in Jesus assuming the place of the Bridegroom at the wedding feast. He will inaugurate his own feast at the institution of the Supper, fulfill it in the pouring out of his blood, and then celebrate the marriage feast of the Lamb every time his Bride partakes of the Eucharist. Old water to new wine.

Christianity began as sun worship, the stories about Jesus are symbolic. He is just a personification of the sun, made into a god figure later on. The sun "dies" for 3 days on December 22nd, the winter solstice, when it stops its movement south, to be born again or resurrected on December 25th, when it resumes its movement north. In some areas, the calendar originally began in the constellation of Virgo, and the sun would therefore be "born of a Virgin" The sun rising in the morning is "the saviour of mankind" The sun is "The light of the World" The sun "walks on water" is just the reflection of the sun on water/the sea. "He cometh on clouds, and every eye shall see him", is just sun rays. Jesus' "crown of thorns" is just the sun's glare, also know as a halo. The sun's "followers", "helpers" or "disciples" are the 12 months and the 12 signs of the zodiac or constellations, through which the sun must pass. The sun at 12 noon is in the house or temple of the "Most High": thus.."he" begins "his Father's work" at "age" 12. The sun enters into each sign of the zodiac at 30 degrees, hense, the "Sun of God" begins his ministry at "age" 30. The sun is hung on a cross or "crucified", which represents its passing through the equinoxes. The vernal equinox being Easter, at which time it is then resurrected. The reason why saviour myths are so similar with a godman who is crucified and resurrected, who does miracles and has 12 disciples, is that these stories were based on the movements of the sun through the heavens, an astrotheological development that can be found throughout the planet, because the sun and the 12 zodiac signs can be observed around the globe. In other words, Jesus Christ and all the others upon whom this character is predicated are personifications of the sun, and the Gospel fable is merely a rehash of a mythological formula revolving around the movements of the sun throug the heavens. I know this is made a year ago, but I have to share my thoughts...I was a shallow Christian and still drank, until the Holy Spirit convicted me one day and scriptures began to open up. I quit drinking. But I have friends who drink and quote this scripture to support why it is ok to drink. Last night I was thinking "why ,Jesus....why the water into wine? What does it signify?"...So today I watched some videos to understand the times He was living in....when I read the scripture again, the first thing I saw was the 6 jars for the purification of the jews...then Jesus took water, which was used in Leviticus, for cleansing...and He turned the water into wine...fast forward to the last supper...Jesus takes the cup of wine...blesses it and says "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's Kingdom". I have to wonder if the turning of water into wine was not maybe a foreshadow of the crucifixion to come that would purify us...... When I wrote this...I had not read the comments yet....I see now their are others that have the same idea that is is a foreshadow of the cross...OH WE BLESS YOUR HOLY NAME JESUS!!!

Excellent, as always! I had never considered how John sets up the Jacob allusion in Genesis 28-29, nor the LXX and Joseph. Thank you for your ministry to the broader church. An extra point I read last year. Moses' first sign was turning water into blood. Jesus' first sign was water into wine. Blessings!

@@Gamefan86 Are you asserting that Jesus never existed, and His disciples never existed? That the gospel story was a clear allegory of sun worship? Why didn't the Jews (who tried to destroy the religion Jesus established) assert this in trying to debunk the claim that Jesus is an actual Messiah who lived, died, and was resurrected?

@@Gamefan86 Fascinating information. You have it backwards. The sun, moon, and stars were put in place to highlight the glory of God and his son Jesus. There are many examples like this all over. i find it interesting that the ceremonial water, that is used for purification is used. Knowing they would soon, no longer need the ceremonial water. When we no longer need the ceremonial water we rejoice and celebrate, hence wine. The journey of trying to understand WHY water to wine is the answer of what is and was, to come. The details are all significant.

Ok. Water is the single word used to convey an idea about ‘creative force of life’….turning water into wine is a narrative statement that conveys turning an origin understanding into something more intoxicating, or full of life. Any reference to ‘reed’ in this table selling doves….about water , and reeds in Cana, you have to ask about Moses and the Reed See.

In other words, Jesus Christ and all the others upon whom this character is predicated are personifications of the sun, and the Gospel fable is merely a rehash of a mythological formula revolving around the movements of the sun throug the heavens. the third day. this does not refer to the number of the day of the week but from the day of his baptism. note john 1 the mention of the 2 next days. so, it is not unlikely that this third day from his baptism falls on the 6th day of the week.

Maybe. But according to scripture Mary, the mother of Jesus asked Him to. Can God ignore His own laws? Honor your father and mother. Jesus is God, and Mary is the mother of Jesus (God). So Jesus' mother said they have run out of wine. Jesus' reply was, what does that have to do with me? I'm sure Mary gave Him that Mother look, which neans do something about it now.

Jesus turned water into wine - because He could! It had the desired effect because the world has been talking about that event ever since.

I believe you have it backwards and, in so doing, have placed the cart before the horse. It was all meant as a foreshadowing of the Person of Jesus. It’s how He made and directed creation, like a symphony telling His Story which would ultimately glorify Him. It was meant to direct those who sought guidance from these created things to guidance from Jesus instead, leading people to worship Him. Think of the renowned picture that has both the old woman and the young woman in the one image. Which do you see? The old woman or the young woman or both? I distinctly see each but can see both at the same time in order to perceive the whole of the message. It can kind of be described as utilizing peripheral vision while using regular vision. I pray you will be able to see this spiritual way as well and not be limited in your sight because, honestly, I believe you’re halfway there since you seem to grasp the language of symbolism.

He didn't. Jewsus is a fictional allegory for the sun. Christianity is ancient astrology. The sun made the grapes grow after they gave them water, so they could be made into wine. It's fables about the the sun.
