@jeremiahgabriel5709
@jeremiahgabriel5709 Месяц назад
Valid thought. Personally, I think that would rather depend on if the person in question has time in their life for that sort of analysis, and also on if they themself subscribe to the toxic positivity notion that all life is a wonderful gift, instead of realizing it's something that just happens to us and we have no say in. I'm often thoroughly impressed when I reflect historically, but I just as often find myself wondering if there was less religion brainwashing people, more access to reliable birth control, and women had been given more rights over their own bodies.... how different the world would now be....

@odrankeane-teague1601
@odrankeane-teague1601 3 года назад
It would be animal cruelty if it was done for no reason. They did this to demonstrate what people did in those times to cure their illnesses. These were people from a different time when these sort of animals were a lot more plentiful. If this wasn't something that was historical accurate I doubt he would have done this. He himself was surprised to see they were alive but that's how it was done.
@WillowTDog
@WillowTDog 3 года назад
@@odrankeane-teague1601 Seeing an animal killed slowly is not of any benefit in this situation. You could at least make the argument that some scientific studies might do something like this for a purpose, but almost every situation would be done differently in any study that was associated with any kind of organization. Just about any study can be done with less cruelty, so it isn't going to pass any sort of board. That's the only way to get the funding to run any kind of study. It is absolutely not necessary for a television show on history! Or anything, honestly. It doesn't add anything. It's literally a sign of sociopathy (to use the common term) to torture an animal, and what else is killing something with nerve endings and a brain slowly? Seriously.

I love how the word "delving" has stuck around, coming from the medieval quarries where it meant getting into the deeper part of the stone until now where it means digging deeper into any subject, e.g. "Let's delve into this area a bit deeper and try to understand." I'm a bit of a word nerd, so things like that always fascinate me. Look up the story of flipping someone the middle finger and saying "F you" for a very good tale!

Interesting. Do you perhaps know where the term "shut up" comes from? I was watching their documentary on the Great Plague and it was stated that people who showed signs of the plague were "shut up" in their houses (along with any family members, plague-ridden or not, I might add). Someone hypothesised that this may be the origin of shut up as a derogatory term. So, I'm curious. (And too lazy to look things up apparently).

@@jploeg8862 Someone's jelaous. No they weren't. They were caused by Fall of Roman Empire. The Fall of Constantinopole happened long after the start of Dark Age. No one can help you that you were literally destroying the good things the Romans gave you, while Muslims were gathering any knowledge they could get and using them for inventions that form the base of modern technology.

@@fisebilillah4406 , Constantinople fell at the END of the Middle Ages (1453 to be exact, meaning the Roman Empire survived for another 1000 YEARS) because of...... MUSLIIIIIIMMMSSSS!!!!!, what's more, Europeans also preserved Greco-Roman knowledge during the Middlw Ages in Monasteries and Universities funded by the Church. Muslims didn't preserve them because they were Muslims, they probably just stumbled on it while trying to conquer what's left of the Roman (inaccurately called Byzantine) Empire and then preserved it while trying to destroy the civilization that made them. Europeans began to preserve them probably before Charlemagne. What's more, the Roman Empire was still there (The West just hated them when a woman ruled the Romans so they made their rip-off) so there was nothing to preserve in the first place (except for some reason we did).
@mikec8086
@mikec8086 5 лет назад
@@jploeg8862 while Muslims did attack, the west church and ottamans were at war for centuries. The dark age britons focused their technological advancements on different areas than say Aztecs or Ottomans. In reality, during wartime, the church and Ottomans behaved very similarly, except that the church really didn't take slaves while the ottamans would. Ancient warfare is very interesting as the base human interest are often more bare than modern days. Back then, they fought for money,land or status which we Now still do but hidden behind a " righteous" purpose.

I KNOW , I thought the same thing. Broke my heart. it killed me to see that too. Horrific. Im surprised this Man did this seeing as he's so important in the show. Surprised he didn't protest. HE said that "Oh you didn't tell me it was alive", but LIKE seriously, For the sake of 20 seconds. He could/should have stopped filming the segment and NOT killed this animal. im just freaking out with shock.

I think your claim is fairly baseless, they have brains. When you poke them in the brain enough (or cut off their head) the eel stops exhibiting behavior. This seems to reason to me that some form of control of the behavior of the organism is centralized in their as evolved as our species' counterpart, yet far less complex central nervous system. Because we don't understand enough about how something like an experience is produced, I would not preclude the possibility that eels may suffer.

I dunno...I feel like the barber surgeon shouldn't be in this doc. Maybe to some people it would be considered a bad profession. But having the knowledge and expertise and the rights to use all those tools seems pretty badass. Sure the actual surgeries would be stressful to perform when your patient is screaming in agony, but telling people that you were the town barber AND town surgeon would be cool. He was probably popular at parties.
