I love-love-love Roger Moore as James Bond! Especially his last 5 movies: 1977, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1985. I think this was the best time in the franchise! By the way, Timothy Dalton's 1st film is also great! So, 1977-1987: What a great period in James Bond world!
@@andrewpepper8031 I hate Live and Let Die. Only Sean's first four Bond films were good. The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only were great Roger Moore Bond films!
@@andrewpepper8031 I beg to differ. The Spy Who Loved Me had to be Roger's best Bond film. Apart from the sig tune from Live & Let Die, i wasn't that impressed with parts of it especially when the sherrif turned up. He did have the best punchlines from the films. My second fave Moore Bond film was For Your Eyes Only when not only do we see the singer for the first time but it had a good storyline
Roger is my favourite Bond by a mile. I’ve always said that if your car has pop-out machine guns and your watch has a laser in it then it behoves you to have a sense of humour about it! But while 6’4” rhymes with Moore, he is said to have been 186cm or 6’1”
Moonraker I watched that with my dad in Falmouth happy times. Loved shout at the devil, gold, wild geese and one comedy one he played a queen on a gay cruise with Cuba gooding
My sister used to live in the flat on the floor below his in Eaton Square during the late 1980s/1990s and he regularly used to open the front door for them as they exited the building at the same time, saying "after you ladies" and smiling. I think he stopped because he was 45 on his first Bond film and in his last Bond film he was 57, he had visibly aged since the last film. He was the second oldest Bond, David Niven was 57 in Casino Royale 1967, Sean Connery was 31 during filming the first Bond film Dr No and was 41 in his last Bond film Diamonds are Forever 1971 and had been wearing a wig for some time due to hair loss or 53 if you count Never Say Never Again as a Bond film as it was a rewritten Thunderball. I prefer Connery's Bond partially because I grew up watching him and I think he was a more serious Bond in keeping with the books. That said I preferred Moore as The Saint.
He quit because he thought it hilarious that as a Secret-Secret agent when he arrived in some foreign hotel on a secret assignment the manager greeted him with, ‘Ah Mr Bond! welcome to…’
Sir Roger Moore(RIP), Will Always Be My Favorite James Bond. He Was The Only JB, To Fight An Animal. Suave, Smooth, Relentless, Resourceful, Just Some Of His Traits. Love Him, Miss Him😊.
I left Thailand at 7 in '73. TMWTGG was what got me and other Asian transplants to like 007 movies...cheeky and exotic....flop or world exposure? Get a tea and crumpets and get back to me.😎🤠🧐
Thank you, I’ve always liked the man, he seemed down to earth and a decent fellow. He once posed for me for a photograph at a Frank Sinatra at concert in ‘The Point’ stage in Dublin, many moons ago.
Thankyou for posting this wonderful portrayal of Sir Roger Moore ❤️ Age of Vintage you just get better & better🎉 So many photos of him I had never seen, he was one of the most Handsome actors, but also a very humble & down to earth man. He was thrilled when Audrey Hepburn introduced him to Charity work. I have read his Autobiography My Word is my Bond, absolutely wonderful portrayal of Roger & showed his Love, Respect & Kindness to all his friends, family & fans. He has never refused to sign an Autograph for any of his Worldwide fans. RIP SIR Roger Moore ❤ You are sorely missed, your Love Empathy & Kindness will live on forever❤ Love Love from Australia 🇦🇺 ❤❤❤❤Xxxx
He really did out stay his welcome. He should have quit after, For Your Eyes Only, as he was just too old and his stunt doubles were just so obvious especially in, A View To A Kill.
He certainly is one of my favourite actors and though some of the Bond movies,at times were a bit silly, they were always a lot of fun. For me though I found the Bond girls to be the magnet that drew me to the cinema or the video rental shop. Great production, thanks for your efforts
Sir Roger Moore 1927-2017 Was A Great James Bond Playing The Role Seven Times Starting With Live And Let Die 1973 Until A View To A Kill 1985! He Played Bond With A Humourous Touch Which Some People Thought That Was Too Different From Ian Fleming's Novels! To Me Sir Roger Moore Did Bring A New Fresh Less Serious Version! I've Always Like The Funny Lines And Action Scenes! The Spy Who Loved Me 1977 Was Probably His Best Bond Film Brilliantly Paired With Barbara Bach As Tthe Russian Agent! The Man With The Golden Gun 1974 Moonraker 1979 Octopussy 1983 And A View To A Kill 1985 Were Looked Down On By Some But I Enjoyed Them! All In All Sir Roger Moore Brought His Own Style To The Role!😎🕴🍸🔫⛷️🤿🗻🏝🇬🇧
In reality, it made more sense for him to stand down as being 60 when "The Living Daylights" came out, is embarrassing if he continued : there is no way to stop the clock - it was the right time.
It wasn't a shock for me when he quit Bond he had been saying he was getting too old for the role at the time of for your eyes only, , He admitted after his seventh bond movie that he was at least four hundred years too old for the part,
Roger Moore was first choice over Connery for the James Bond role but he was committed to his role as The Saint. When Connery stepped down, Moore was committed to The Persuaders and so Lazenby took the Bond role whilst Moore was preoccupied. When The Persuaders ended, Moore was free to take up the Bond role.
Didn't knew that. Conclusion. He was the real Bond meant to be. He arrived to the roll at he age of 40. A mature Bond, and still energetic enough to be the best of all time as Bond.
If you read Rogers biography My word is my Bond, he was going to take over the role after Sean with The man with the golden gun in Cambodia 🇰🇭, unfortunately the Pol Pot uprising stopped the film being made, he went back to make another season of The Saint so he wasn’t around for OHMSS.
Overall I enjoyed your video, however, there are a number of areas that I beg to differ with your opinions. 1). Sean Connery didn't leave the role of Bond in 1966. He still had "You Only Live Twice" to film in 1967 and THEN he left the role to return to EON one last time in 1971 for Diamonds Are Forever. 2). Roger Moore was listed as 6'2, not 6'4. 3). Nothing cringeworthy in his films? Please. While Roger is my favorite Bond there were plenty of cringeworthy moments in his movies. In A View To A Kill, he beds Grace Jones character. That's not cringeworthy? C'mon. And as Roger aged the difference between himself and his leading ladies become more stark and less believable. He was too old for Carole Bouquet character in For Your Eyes Only land he was too old for Kristina Wayborn in Octopussy and Tanya Roberts in AVTAK. However, Lois Chiles in Moonraker and Maud Adams in OP were far more believable and much more age appropriate. Another cringeworthy scene is Bond driving a motorized gondola through Venice or the double-take pigeons which seemed to show up in all of the John Glen directed Bond films. And finally, what about that stupid slide whistle which ruins the car stunt in The Man with the Golden Gun? There were plenty of "cringy" moments in Roger's films and not all of them are his fault. 4). TMWTGG. There's this popular narrative that the film was a "flop" It wasn't financially. EON spent $7M to produce the film and it returned $97M in box office receipts. That's a pretty good return on investment. However, in the EON world, if a new James Bond film doesn't substantially out-gross its immediate predecessor, the film is considered a flop. But most filmmakers would not consider a film that returns 10X it's cost as a "flop". They would think they had done rather well. Personally, I think Roger should've left the franchise after 1979's Moonraker. By that time, he was already 52 years old and starting to look a little aged for the role. By the time he did FYEO (54), OP (56) and AVTAK (58) - he was far too old to continue playing the world's greatest secret agent. Elsewhere in the thread another poster felt Roger was too old when he took the role at age 44 when they filmed Live and Let Die. I disagree. When you see Roger in his first three films he still looks young enough to carry the role. In LALD note how slim he is and he still has a younger look to him. He's a veteran agent but he looks like he is years away from claiming his pension. I think Tom Mankiewicz wrote screenplays that were perfect for Roger's portrayal. In fact, I think Diamonds Are Forever is much more of a Moore type film than Connery. It's as if Manikiewicz wrote DAF with Roger Moore in mind and not Sean. I think if Roger had started his Bond role in DAF and left after MR, it would've been much better. One last thing - the entire Roger Moore as Bond conversation wouldn't exist if George Lazenby had agreed to keep playing Bond. Remember, Broccoli wanted George to sign a seven-picture deal and play Bond all the way through the 1970's. Ugh. I think George Lazenby was a terrible, wooden actor and had he agreed to keep playing Bond, it probably would've eventually killed the franchise.
To say the least, a lot of valid statements here: by the time of production of Moore's fifth appearance as 007, negotiations were made as there was no way of knowing if he was going to return - that alone speaks for itself. Perhaps Lazenby's inexperience was a good omen, as all of them (apart from him) were established in one way or another, I'd say Dalton is the wisest of them all, as he allowed himself to mature, rather than make a wrong decision - too bad he was limited to a couple of movies. I don't care what some people say about the series - each of their own - however it goes without much saying that Craig made such an indelible impact (he added a lot of emotion, depth and danger et al) on the role, his successor has their work cut out for them.
@@anthonylewis2080Re: Craig. He did add depth, emotion, danger etc, but he brought to the role what was expected of him by the producers. Broccoli and Wilson WANTED Craig to play a more vulnerable Bond and they approved of the change. I think what so many of these fans who comment on the series lack is the understanding that every actor who's played Bond has played the role in a manner that was sought and approved of by the people signing his paycheck. No actor has carte blanche to play a role exactly as he sees fit. There's a meeting of the minds between the producers and the actors and they work out what they want and don't want. It's silly to read people on these message forums castigate Roger Moore for his portrayal of Bond while never acknowledging that Roger played the role as written by the writers and he played the role the way he did because Cubby Broccoli liked, wanted and approved of a lighter and sillier Bond. I always tell the people who are critical of Roger's Bond that if they detest his portrayal so much they should take themselves to Forest Lawn Cemetary, find Cubby's grave and then stand there and yell at him about it.
18:44 The Bond producers wanted to find a younger actor because Moore was 57 when he made A View To A Kill. From Moonraker onwards Roger Moore was not under a multi film contract. Each film was a new negotiated one film contract only. Moore was not under a contract to make an eighth Bond film *so he did not quit nor was he fired.* The producers decided to recast the role. Although Timothy Dalton was considered for For Your Eyes Only in 1981 (he declined the role), Pierce Brosnan was the main candidate to replace Moore in 1986. Brosnan was signed for the role but Cubby Broccoli refused to share his new Bond with the makers of Remington Steele TV show. They renewed the show and this undermined Eon Productions casting of Brosnan as Bond so the deal was terminated. Timothy Dalton was cast as Bond for The Living Daylights (1987). Brosnan was cast as Bond in Goldeneye (1995)
Sir Roger my all time fav bond, loved the saint and the persuaders too. as an 70s kid he was my bond and also a great film in the man who who haunted himself. also i was one lucky sob i met him before he was going to the royal premier of a view to a kill. it was raining so i was invited into the back of his car and chatted wit him and luisa his then wife. a total gentleman and signed a photo for me. now not a lot of people remember or know this. in one saint episode roger went into a hotel to search a room and said something to the receptionist then she replied oh so youre james bond. brilliant
Roger Moore is not 6'4" as you said, 6'1'' tops! Also, he did not make his first James Bond film in 1966, but 1973, "You Only live Twice"! I've also heard that he was offered the role in 1962, but couldn't get out of his "Saint" contract! Moore was terrific in the part, but was too old at about 44, to start to play James Bond & 57, to stop playing it! Roger Moore was great in nearly everything that he played in his illustrious & long career! R.I.P. Roger!
Actually that was wrong because Roger originally wanted to quit after Moonraker but he was brought backm to do for your eyes only cause they got a new director John Glen and also again for the battle of the bonds in 83 after that he should of retired
Like you, I grew up watching Roger moore as 007 and was my favourite! And why? Because of his comic appeal playing james bond. I loved the bond girl's as well! Roger moore said as a secret agent, he would last 5 secs before being shot by an assassin 😅 sean connery was probably more realistic, but it's pure fantasy anyway. I'm also a big jason bourne fan and, in my opinion, are more realistic and serious, which I love. Great video.
Moore started off reasonably well as Bond but his tenure soon degenerated into childish farce with Moonraker the nadir of the franchise. He had the odd moment of taking it seriously (the scene where Triple X mentions Tracey for instance) but was far too old to play Bond given that he was in his mid 40s when he started in 1973. The childish sight-gags and pop culture references soon became boring and unlike Connery, he was never convincing in hand to hand combat. I bought the Bond blu ray boxset when it was released and to this day the Moore era remains unwatched.
Roger Moore had a great voice and he can be very charming. However, I think he was one of the weakest Bonds. He lacked the dangerous element that made Connery so awesome.
Sorry, but I don't really like Moore as Bond. He's a great actor and love him in most of his movies, but not as a Bond. He brought to much comedy to what is supposed to be a spy thriller. For me, I like Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. But this is just my opinion. Also, I liked George Lazenby in On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
OHMSS is probably my favourite Bond movie, considering George Lazenby wasn’t an actor, he done a pretty good job, pity his manager told him not to do anymore as he would have settled into the role quite well and maybe a darker Bond for the 70s.
There's mature and then there's geriatric. - 58 is no longer believable for the action scenes...In AVTAK. Tanya Roberts was old enough to be his granddaughter. - Creepy.
Roger Moore was never my favorite Bond. Connery was No. 1; Pierce Brosnan was No. 2. So I'd probably say that Moore was No. 3. (I won't even mention Daniel Craig. Oops! I just did.)
I was always far more into Connery and Lazenby and Craig as Bond than Moore and his Live and Let Laugh performances as Bond, although I actually recently discovered his older TV series The Saint which I actually enjoy more than his Bond movies.
Ridiculous Video!!!! Roger Moore aged out of the Role. In his last Film he was a very Old James Bond. People often become too Old to keep playing a Character. The Character of James Bond doesn't age in his Novels. He is a 30's something man in every Novel. There are many Iconic Characters that Are Not aged in their Book series. Roger Moore looked too Old to keep playing James Bond.
