First of all, what we call Genesis (in Hebrew the books of the Tannach / "Old Testament" don't have names) is often considered to be the oldest book (because it offers the story of the beginnings - but it really is the most recent one of the "Old Testament" written. Also - certainly when you do not read Hebrew - one often thinks that it is written by "one hand". That is not the case: a lot of "material" is - sometimes sloppily - coined together from different sources - from older Hebrew ones as well. There are many “writing hands” to see in the final Hebrew text. Hence the many “contradictions”. The first and oldest story of the origin of mankind was most likely a lot longer. What we find in the final Hebrew text is a remnant. Probably - but this is speculation - man was originally an androgynous being that was split into two equal halves: man and woman - both "equal beings". This “equality” was rejected at the time that "Genesis" was definitely composed. The woman is then created in the second story "out of" the man - as a subordinate. Not from a "rib", but from his side (the Hebrew word in casu can be translated in several ways, but the oldest translation in Greek gives: "side"). Later, an ancient Sumerian story (about the woman Lilith who eventually becomes an evil monster) is linked to the first creation story: Lilith then becomes the first wife of Adam who was rejected by him because she claimed rightfully to be "equal" and, for example, wanted to be "on top" during sex. She becomes a seductive "evil being". In the Middle Ages, the “snake” (which was not yet a snake at the time of the seduction: it only loses its legs as a punishment) is often depicted with the seductive head of Lilith. When the "Notre Dame de Paris" can be visited again: in one of the side entrances there is an image of it. But most beautiful is a painting by Hugo van der Goes: the "snake" with legs and with the seductive head of Lilith. www.artbible.info/art/large/291.html The story of Lilith is merely one of the stories “borrowed” from older literature. Other examples are: Noah and the Great Flood (also found in the Epic of Gilgamesh, based on an even older Sumerian Epic) and the story of Moses (in Sumerian: Sargon).

@@albertjanvanhoek294 First, you have to remember in religions of the world, the ignorant believe that everything needs to be born hence the reason for Lilith. The Hindu song asks, "How could that which is, be born of that which is not?" Most religions, even with their many gods, don't even try to explain creation before mankind. There is only one creation except for the animals. There was one creation of birds, fish, beasts and humans. Chapter 2 elaborates, probably, after the cursory creative process God gave him. I believe after digesting and writing it down, Moses then asks for a more detailed creation story of humans. Now after the creation of man and his insertion in the garden God created the domesticated fowl and animals, some as pets, others as helpmates that God had Adam name to introduce him to their use.(Gen 2:18) I believe Adam was even more lonely as he observed that they all had mates. So God created Eve as a complement, a help mate.(Gen2:21-23) The only thing she could help Adam with was populating (Gen 1:28) and helping in the garden. (Gen 2:15).

@@edetcetera Thank you for your reaction. In literature everything imaginable is possible. And every comment or addition on what is written is possible. For instance concerning that Hindu song: Nil posse creari de nihilo / Lucretius / De Rerum Natura Libri Sex, I: 156-157. One can believe what is written. Or one can see it as only literary fantasy. For me, "god" exists only in literature. Like Zeus, or Odin, or Inti, or Vishnu , or Amon-Re, or ... etc. But I respect everyone who believes.

The reason satan tempted Eve is because his first attack was on the divinely ordained institution of the family. The command that prohibited mankind from eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was originally given to Adam BEFORE Eve was created from his rib. Eve received the same instruction secondhand from her husband. Thus the craftiness of the serpent's temptation. When he asks "Has God really said," satan is not calling into question God's integrity. God cannot lie, and both satan and the woman know it. Instead, satan is causing the woman to doubt whether or not she should trust her husband to lead her well, and he is causing her to suspect that her husband is withholding some good thing from her in order to keep her in submission to him. It is Adam's integrity being called into question, not God's. However, the Bible makes clear that "by one man sin entered into the world." This says to me that the first sin ever committed was not by Eve who was first to eat of the forbidden fruit, but rather a different sin committed by Adam. How so? Simply that Adam did not do what God had commanded him to do. Look back through the text and you will see that Adam received multiple commands from God concerning things that he was to do, in addition to the the single command that prohibited from doing one thing in particular. Many things to do. One thing not to do. Failing in either way is disobedience and therefore sin. Adam was given dominion. Adam was left in charge. Adam, as the head of his family and human regent of Eden, should have stood up for his wife and intervened on her behalf. But instead he commenced Operation Human Shield and hid behind his wife. When God again visits the garden and calls out "Where are you?" He is not playing along with Adam's game of hide and seek. God is omniscient and already knows where Adam is hiding. Instead, God's question to the man is actually a confrontation concerning the man's disobedience in failing to do the job he was assigned. Adam is AWOL. God is demanding that Adam explain why he has abandoned his post and has absconded from his duties. Eve's sin of eating the forbidden fruit was only possible because of Adam's prior failure to do as God had commanded him. Eve was deceived, the Bible tells us. Adam was not, which actually makes his sin that much worse.

No, Eve was not created to prevent Adam from sin because he already had the Word of God for that: "But you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die." Just as we have the gospel of Christ which is the power of God to draw us into the body of genuine Christians. Make no mistake about the fact that Adam was always the target of the serpent, not Eve. If he hadn't fallen mankind would not have fallen. He was the one who received God's command, not Eve. What was Adam's essential sin? He set aside the command of God (the Truth) and allowed himself to partake of the word (lie) of the serpent (Satan). Isn't that what we still do today on far too many occasions? But we will overcome the Adversary through Christ if we remain faithful to the end.

I have a third possible explanation: although Eve was tempted and ate, when she offered some of the fruit, Adam could have refused and talked to God about it. God would have confirmed the consequences to Adam of Eve’s sin and offered Adam the option to die in her place. If Adam had agreed, Eve could have been restored. God could have resurrected Adam just like he did Jesus because Adam was without sin. That didn’t happen. Unfortunately, after Adam (who did not stop Eve before she ate because he did not know God well enough to realize God would NEVER deceive them) ate, it was THEN that their eyes were opened. Then they were both beyond the point of return. I base this possibility upon the reference to Jesus in the NT as “the last or second Adam” (I Cor 15:45-49). The Last Adam did what the First Adam failed to do and DID die for His bride, the Church and was Raised.

If you read the scriptures, it says Adam was with Eve when she eats from the tree. He, being the head of their family, should have stopped her. Instead, he watched her eat, and when she never dropped dead ,then he ate . It also says sin ented after he eat. I find it strange that preachers never talk about the fact he was with her. Or the fact that he blames Eve and also God .

My old pastor did emphasize those points. I see the order in which God asked them to explain their decisions as, God gave each of them a chance to take some responsibility. The man said, "You put a woman here to help me and instead she tricked me, what was I supposed to do, be an adult?" The the woman said, "Someone offered me something so I took it, what was I supposed to do, be an adult?" And God sent them into the harsh outside world to develop into adults so they wouldn't be so irresponsible. But the reason the serpent first offered the fruit to the woman is that she was a gatherer and more drawn to fruit.

Hello, On the topic of them not having knowledge of good and evil, this is a common misunderstanding. They could tell right from wrong. When God tells Adam to not eat from the tree he’s given to choices; obey (good), disobey (bad). In the text we see this too: Eve sees that the fruit was “good” for eating (Genesis 3:6). If she knows what’s good for eating, this implies she knows what is bad for eating. So they know the difference between good and bad, but not on God’s level and this is what the snake tempts Eve with, “to be like God” (Genesis 3:5). On the topic of the serpent, he wasn’t the real problem it was Adam. Adam is the one told to not eat the tree not Eve, and it looks like he isn’t taking his job seriously as Eve thinks touching the fruit will kill her and that’s not what Adam was told. Furthermore we know Eve was deceived by the snake, but not Adam (1 Timothy 2:14). So when put all together Adam watches his wife, who he’s supposed to be in charge of, get tricked by a snake. From what he’s told, eating the fruit will cause death but he just watches her eat it. Then when he sees it doesn’t cause death eats it too. This is why their eyes don’t open until Adam (the head) eats it too. Now I can’t say why exactly God didn’t warn them of the snake, but again we see this was an Adam problem more than anything because Adam willingly chose to do the wrong thing. I hope I was able to answer your question and if you have any others I’ll try my best to answer them, God bless

This idea continues through the Bible to the very end. A woman who is Serpent's helper becomes a foolish woman or a strange woman, while the woman who is God's intended help for man is known as a wise woman who helps man find his way back to the Tree of Life (Pro 3:1,15,18; Pro 31:10). It's probably not a coincidence that woman was tempted with wisdom ("...and a tree to be desired to make one wise."), yet desire for more wisdom which is not in accordance with God's word often turns a wise one into a fool (Eze 28:2; Rom 1:22).

Ok. Bit mixed up. First off. Who put temptation in the garden? Why did all the angels apparently know all about it ( not evil for them). It wasn't evil to eat the fruit, it was the sin of disobedience. So, given the evidence ( most of which isn't literal) it would appear that we do not have enough evidence to judge either Eve or Adam or in fact God's motives. It is sufficient to know that it was a problem and Christ is the solution.

I don't think so Adam was with Eve all the time in the Eden, he would've been with animals, playing around with them, eating fruits and spending time with Christ and angels(not sure if he actually saw any angels in physical form, maybe or may not, bible didn't detail it. Not sure whether Christ told Adam abt the fall of Lucifr and 1/3 angels from heaven, how Satan rebelled and his pride. Since serpent didn't deceive Adam directly before creation of Eve...there can be possibilities that either serpent approached Adam abt the fruit but Adam was strictly following the word of God and denied eating the fruit or simply serpent was being jealous of seeing Christ and Adam having good time, and waiting for some time doing some plot against Adam. And here comes Eve the partner of Adam, thou they were husband and wife, but not technically they lived like that in the Eden. They would've been in slow and steady state to build a strong relationship together as a husband and wife. The serpent took this opportunity to put some tactics to deceive Adam through Eve and she falls for it without thinking the word of God that they shouldn't eat it ! The bible didn't mention Adam was watching the whole scene of convo between Eve and serpent, pretty sure if Adam was there watching this convo, he would've stopped it. The bible clearly says the convo was only between Eve and Serpent, once she ate the fruit...she gave the fruit to Adam - this case Adam would've been not near her, the tree or at different place from the scene. Once Adam ate, both their eyes were opened and started to cover their nakedness. They started to know what's good and bad, started to cover their sins of not accepting it but blaming.

Well either it was because of a 50/50 scenario falling by chance to one outcome, or the serpent likely saw Eve as easier to deceive. However, no one had lied before the fall, so the serpent wouldnt have known she was gullible to lies. Or maybe he had seen from empirical observation that she was more interested in eating fruit than was Adam. Or as someone else said, it was an early attack on the ordained hierarchy of the couple. In which case the serpent would have caused the first human sin to not only be disobeying God's direct instruction, but also to go against the order He had planned.

Answering the narrators question. The woman was tempted because the second Creation story at the time it was written it was a patriarchal society. Plus it is a myth - not in the sense of a lie - but in the sense of the authors intent to reflect on the meaning of life while under captivity of the Babylonian’s. Talking snakes? God walking through the garden as a gardener. Man made from a rib from the woman. There are also two creation stories. Gen 1. Gen 2. Both vastly different. Different interpretations of the moments of creation.

Good Lord, there's so much misinformation here, both in the video and the comments below it. God told Adam about the 2 trees in the middle of the garden, right away. We don't know how long Adam was alive before God created Eve. The only reason we know they existed at all, is because God gave this information to Moses who wrote it down in what we call the Book of Genesis. God said he brought all the creatures he had made to Adam, and whatever Adam called them, that was their name. We have no idea how long that process took. It could have been years. At some point, God made the decision to make a mate for Adam; someone of his own kind. We don't know when that happened in the life of Adam. God didn't tell us that. We don't know what the conversation was between God and Adam when he introduced Eve to him, or how he introduced her to him. God didn't tell us that either. We don't know how long they lived together before the incident with the forbidden tree. We DO know that Eve knew it was forbidden, because the serpent asked her if God had really forbid them to eat of it, and she said yes and repeated what God had said. God did tell us that much. The point is there's a lot we haven't been told, and it's good to take that into account and be honest about it when teaching others. I don't know why some people seem to have a hang-up about the serpent talking to them. It's no secret that animals have languages, and speak to one another. At that time, everything spoke the same language (it wasn't any language we have today) and they were able to communicate with one another. Ask anyone who owns a dog or cat, and they will tell you they DO communicate with you. There's a lot about the relationship Adam and Eve had together that we don't know, but we can clearly see by the time we get to the incident with the forbidden tree, things don't seem to be going too well between them. Adam is standing there with Eve when the conversation between her and the serpent is happening, and he doesn't say a word. Adam knows what God said would happen if they even touch the forbidden fruit, or eat of it, and he's standing there watching his wife considering doing something he knows would kill her, and he says and does nothing; just watches. When Eve decides to actually reach out for the fruit, Adam doesn't try to stop her, he just stands there watching, apparently willing to watch her die. After they both disobey, and have begun experiencing the consequences, when God asks Adam if he had eaten the fruit he was commanded not to, not only does Adam blame Eve, but he really blames God; "The woman YOU gave me, gave me some and I ate of it." There's absolutely no hint of Adam being protective of his wife, or caring if she's there or not. In fact, he's telling God it's her fault and she should be the one to die. That pretty much tells us Adam was done with her by that point. There's a long story there, but I'm not going to go into it. As for the serpent, you at least recognized it was used by satan, but you didn't consider why. Satan through the serpent was actively trying to get Eve to kill herself, basically a murder by suicide, but why? What grievance did he have with Eve? Satan is the first created son of God, Morning Star, whom we now know as lucifer. The sons of God are the angels, and they are all male; there aren't any female angels, contrary to what religions show. Morning Star was upset that God created Adam in the first place, and called him a son, elevating him to the same level of family that he and his brothers were. He began questioning God about this, but when God created Eve, that changed things dramatically because he gave her an ability he didn't give Morning Star or any of his brothers. Not only was Eve quite beautiful, but God gave her the ability to reproduce their own kind. This angered Morning Star greatly, and was the reason why he was able to convince a third of his brothers to join him in protest over this. The humans weren't impressive in any way; they were even made of dirt, so why was his father doing this? This is where the grievance came from, that was behind satan using the serpent to try and tempt Eve to kill herself. He didn't expect Adam would join her; that was just a bonus. It was Eve he wanted. He wanted them both dead, but especially her because she could reproduce. As clever as he thought he was in doing this, he made a serious error. He thought they would die immediately, which Adam also clearly thought, and when Eve didn't appear to be dying or even having a bad reaction, Adam joined her instead of trusting his father God. For while God did say they would die, he did not say _when_ or how, and that was the error in satan's scheme. Instead of putting an immediate end to the humans, they wound up reproducing and filling the earth, which was the exact opposite of what satan wanted or thought would happen. He's been obsessed with defiling us ever since, constantly accusing us before God to show how stupid we are, and what a mistake it was to create us. There's MUCH more to this story, but the essence of it is trust God and lean not on your own understanding. Obey what Jesus commanded us just before he left: "As I have loved you, love one another." That love is described in detail in 1st Corinthians Chapter 13, and that is in essence, the straight and narrow path.

So wouldn’t Satan deceiving her into eating the fruit defeat his purpose of preventing reproduction?

I actually think God told the man not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. It doesn't say that God told the woman. Additionally, some translations say when you eat vs. if you eat, showing God knew that he or they would eventually eat from the tree. Secondly, even though it doesn't say; there is an implication that Adam told Eve , by the way she responds to the serpent. The serpent says, " Did God tell You that you can't eat from any tree " creating confusion in her response, saying, we are not to eat or touch. This is the next ( speculation implying) that Adam told Eve not to eat or touch in a means to protect her. We use this with our children to protect them, causing more curiosity. Furthermore, the serpent implies God is lying, promising the ability to be like God. I find it interesting that God went down the line distributing justice. Finally, I am troubled by so little emphasis on the Tree of Life and why they were not encouraged to eat from that tree. I think God knows the existence of evil after Lucifer rebelled. I think there are so many stories within this story that shows the consequences of disobedience. Thanks for the opportunity to comment on this subject. Have a blessed day!

In succeeding he enslaved mankind into the bondage of sin and death. Then they start blaming each another, Eve blames the serpent for deceiving her, while Adam blames God for giving him the woman. Almost immediately, with the birth of Cain and Abel, we see Gods lineage of men and satans lineage of men. The sons of God lineage began with Adam to Seth. While Cain started the opposing line. I like the concept of the woman being created and designed to fulfill and deliver mankind. And it does make sense that Satan would attack that specifically. Yea I have so much questions like why did satan tempt eve & what kind of knowledge was there even to know that eve couldn’t have just asked god herself ? Makes me wonder if satan was just jealous or had some sort of idea that his angels were abandoned for god to cater to the future of mankind and wanted to sabotage it out of jealousy ? Maybe he wanted to show god that the future of mankind is a bad idea and doomed because it will create further sin and sacrificed his well being to oppose this idea by taking sin apon his hand and yielding it against god. Where does it say God put the serpent there? God did not lie! The Hebrew says you will die, dying. There was an immediate death, a spiritual death. Adam and Eve no longer had the same kind of relationship with God. Their spirits were dead. And they were dying by having their perfect creation status removed from them. Now they would die for certain in the future. The Bible interprets itself. There is always an explanation of a figurative event. See Peters vision in Acts. See the woman in Revelation 12. The story of Joseph tells you who the characters are. The Bible connects EVERYTHING.

Thank you. I had never considered this reasoning and like to consider new ideas about the Bible. But I still think it most likely Satan tempted Eve because she had not heard the order directly from God and was therefore easier to deceive. As you pointed out, God first tells Adam not to eat the fruit and then He creates Eve. Nowhere does the Bible record God telling Eve not to eat the fruit. And there's something a little strange when Eve addresses the serpent. Genesis 2:16-17 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” Genesis 3: 2The woman answered the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden, 3but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You must not eat of it or touch it, or you will die.’ ”… Notice when God talks to Adam He only says not to eat it. When Eve talks to the serpent, she says that God said not to eat it or touch it. So, the big question is why did she say God said not to touch it when we have no record of God telling Adam or anybody not to touch it? Did Eve make that up? Did God come back later and say that He needed to add something to his original command? Or did Adam add to God's word and tell her not to touch it? If it's the last one, then Adam may have helped the serpent deceive Eve since the serpent would only have to show her that it was okay to touch it and then she would question everything else Adam told her. If he told her not to touch it, it may have been done with love to prevent her from taking the first step toward eating it. But still, adding to the law backfired big time.

Imagination is Yahuwa's tool to forge His most important creation, man, in His own image. He is developing the human mind for His definite purpose and objective. Imagination births emotion. Notice that imagination is in its nascent stage in Adam. Emotion is subdued. He cannot fathom the impact of his disobedience. But will be unmoved by Satan's temptation to be equal to God. The woman is imaginative, emotional. Be equal to God! The temptation is irresistible. So she is the pie to get picked. Again, in Genesis, there is no mention of the serpent being Satan. This is assuming and asserting something from tradition into this story that is not there. Anyway, I am very familiar with the story since I was 5. Studied different interpretations of this story, but I’m not convinced the author of Genesis has a giant dragon in mind here or a cherub fallen from heaven covered in jewels. But the tradition has interpreted this text like this, so it IS a common interpretation. I’ll give you that. 🙂

They had freewill, but it was inevitable for them to both fail in their given unique roles being human and innocent, opposed to the snake's skill and cunning. That they were innocent with no experience may not be an excuse, but I think that God's prime intention to place that tree there :) because He already knew, was to implement His plan to have Jesus Christ come as Saviour through the line of David. Through Jesus, God would be able to display to humans the full spectrum and more of His attributes of His nature and character in a greater measure of love grace, compassion, mercy, comfort, and all the host of different names and titles that Jesus has that describe Him. It's all to His Glory :) and that's where everything lines up and ends up as. His Glory. The Bible says God's ways and thoughts are higher than ours; we are called to walk by grace through faith. Eve was the primary target because she was weaker, most certainly alone, and had not herself received the divine command. @@rodrigomadariaga2051 None of that has anything to do with the fact that the bible never says that Satan was the Serpent. In fact it says the opposite. BIBLICAL ARCHAEOLOGY SOCIETY, says this: Introduced as “the most clever of all of the beasts of the field that YHWH God had made,” the serpent in the Garden of Eden is portrayed as just that: a serpent. Satan does not make an appearance in Genesis 2-3, for the simple reason that when the story was written, the concept of the devil had not yet been invented. Explaining the serpent in the Garden of Eden as Satan would have been as foreign a concept to the ancient authors of the text as referring to Ezekiel’s vision as a UFO. BTW "Satan" means "accuser" or "adversary" and nothing more. Several people in the bible are called Satan. And according to "overview bible" “Satan” means “adversary,” and it’s the name we use for the devil, the adversary of God and His people. It’s an old name that comes straight from ancient Hebrew, the original Old Testament language. But Satan isn’t the only one the Bible uses this word for. In fact, the Bible mentions several satans. Of course, you won’t always see the word “Satan” in English Bibles, because it’s translated “adversary” or something similar. If you were to look at the ancient scrolls, however, you’d see the word satan used to describe different people, not just the devil.

It's perhaps not quite as complex as you might think. If you think of God as flesh and blood, then it's difficult to comprehend because of the limitations of the flesh, but God is not flesh and blood, God is spirit. God is pure energy. The best analogy is to think of three flames. Each is distinct, each gives off light. If you combine the three together, they become one flame. If you move them apart again, then they are 3 separate flames, yet each is equal to the others and looks like the others. That's the easiest way to visualize the Triune God. The Father is the will of God, he makes the decisions; the Son is the doer, the Word of God, he does the will of the Father; the Spirit is the power of God, he is the power by which the Son does the will of the Father. They are in perfect unity with each other and can function as one, or independently. Though they are three persons and personalities, we know them collectively as God.@@peteryoung4974

Adam's heart is Eve and God took his heart out, separated it so he could get to KNOW his own heart: It is the heart that is tempted and the heart (desire) that must SUBMIT to God in BOTH males and females: Males also have a heart but they PROJECT it onto the female because they don't FEEL it till it affects them from the outside: Females also PROJECT the mind and will outside of themselves by BLAME which they had to OVERCOME by using their MIND and WILL instead of subjecting it to males: A WHOLE person knows their heart and mind and will (Satan is lifted up and becomes ONE WILL with God) to overcome the crooked serpent God created so Adam Eve and the serpent (Adam's crooked will) can choose God instead of itself:

Interesting take, but misses the *_Larger Context_* of the entire Bible. Genesis has multiple layers, including the metaphor of Masculine and Feminine. God and Christ are "masculine" (e.g. "bridegroom") because they *_GIVE,_* like "male" electrical plugs give. And Eve and Humanity are "feminine" (e.g. brides of Christ) because they *_RECEIVE,_* like "female" electrical sockets receive. Here's one interpretation: Genesis 1-3 take place in Heaven, outside of space-time. Thus, Adam in the Garden is spirit and *_not_* flesh. The fact that God said Adam would "die on the day" he ate of the forbidden fruit, but he did not physically die, suggests that this is all at the level of spirit. The two stories -- the physical and the spiritual -- are overlapping. Genesis 4-5 ARE the "Tree of Life" (see *_The Bible's Hidden Wisdom_* for details). And the Tree of Knowledge of Good-Evil is a similar conceptual matrix (rather than a physical tree); the dichotomy in its name is the clue. For the entire physical universe is a realm consisting entirely of dichotomies -- like the one discovered by Newton: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Adam and Eve in the Garden were not separate, but one entity. We saw the male side which is God's hope of a *_Giver_* like Him, but Adam was created initially as a receiver. The physical universe (all of dichotomy, the pattern of which WAS the Tree of Knowledge) was what God needed in order to separate the receivers from the givers. Those who chose to give will cling to Christ -- the first graduate.
