For a number of foreign air forces, a Hawk 75 was a "just enough" fighter if your alternatives were biplanes or "not enough" monoplanes. It was also good enough to be the "aerodynamic base" for the Curtiss P-40, which is/was "just enough" for air forces facing down the likes of the early Bf-109 and Mitsubishi A6M Zero.

I've always thought the P-36 could have been transformed by the installation of the P&W R-1830 version used in the F4F Wildcat which had 2 stage/2speed supercharging vs the one used in the P-36 with just a single stage. That would have made a huge improvement in high altitude performance.

It was easy to manufacture, relatively cheap and had good-if not great-performance. The P-36 was competitive with early German and Japanese fighters and gave a good account of itself until better designs came along.

The United States had a limited military budget. When the budget was eventually increased ,the P-40 was available.

Would have been much more popular and successful if they could only configure a cool fish mouth paint scheme for the engine cowling... I don’t know, a lamprey?

Im curious, what will be achieved if P-36 plane will be whole increased in size to accomodate P&W R-2800 radial engine🤔. Did it achieve flight characteristics like early P-47 versions? Or maybe better?

The Wright R-2600 would have been a better choice for this sized airframe.

The P36 / 75A-4 / Mohawk 1V was better than the bf109d series and equal to the bf109E-1

Against Bf-109E - not exactly, cause german plane was faster at higher altitude, better armed in versions with 2x20mm Cannons , and had a much better climb. Hawk had much better steering values for pilot, better maneoverability, better rear view for pilot, better cockpit comfort and slightly better range.
