The Premier League is the wealthiest and most watched football league on Earth, having grown and grown ever since its creation in 1992.
Prior to its creation, the top flight of English football was the First Division, and it was administered by the Football League.
So why was the Premier League created, who pioneered the break away, and why did they leave the Football League behind? In this brief examination, HITC Sevens answers exactly that question.

The back pass rule was introduced after Euro 92, which was a dramatic change to the way in which football was played. So much so, you could make the argument that that’s why 1992 and onwards is considered modern football. Coincidental with the formation of the premier league but convenient.

dylan wyatt-brown oh yeah, totally agree, the backpass rule is my way of reconciling it rather than completely bowing to it. But 92 is a nice chapter marker. I’ve wondered how other countries think of dividing time because that rule would make sense.
@matthewreid2107
@matthewreid2107 4 года назад
I've often thought 1992 is a Year Zero in football for many reasons. The Champions League was launched as well as the Premier League, and the backpass law being changed is massive, despite often being overlooked. Most rule changes in football over the last 150 years have been gradual tweaks (offside, handball, tackling etc), but this was a huge shift overnight, and really affected how the game was managed.

The Premier League is a domestic league that modernised a lot of bad things in English football. Decrepit, crumbling stadiums with dodgy af safety and comfort. Introducing women and children into the match day experience, not just men. Promotion into and relegation out of the league was and is still possible. It is not a closed pan European league played by the same 10/12 clubs with no fear of relegation. The two do not compare.

@@lubabalomengu1845 I think the reason why England didn't win anything BEFORE 92 was coz other countries were simpler BETTER at football (Netherlands, Argentina, Brazil, West Germany, Italy etc)... Better coaches, players etc. After 1992 England had an influx of great coaching minds and great players, yet that didn't translate to their own players or managers becoming better. Meaning it was never about improving the English game and a skills transfer, it was simply going to get the best of the best, from whatever country and selling a product. In answer to the above question. This is my personal opinion. Yes it was money. When the ban was lifted on English clubs. English football wanted to reform itself enough so it could be as wealthy as the football on the continent like Frnace, Spain, Italy etc. For about 20 years prior to the formation of the PL, English football was in crisis. Not so much with results on the pitch as English clubs were successful in Europe in the 1970s and 1980s. It was more to do with events off the pitch. Wherever English teams played was often marred by crowd trouble. Which came to a head with Heysel in 1985 and English clubs being banned for six years. This was seen as a disaster for English football as the standard of Footall in England suffered as a result during those six years. However ironically this period also saw the emergence of very talented players in England that did well in italia 90. Players like Gary Lineker, Paul Gascoigne, Peter Beardsley, Paul Parker, Ian Wright, John Fashanu to name a few. Also in the 1970s and 1980s much of the stadia in England was very old some have not been renovated since the 1930s and 1940s. Making any stadium in England at the time potential dangerous to attend. Crumbling old stadiums, crowd trouble and lack of resources by police to ensure safety of matches came to a head at hillsbrough in Sheffield in 1989. By this time English football was the pariah league of Europe if not the world. It was potentially life threatening for reasons above for anyone to go and watch a game of soccer in England during this era. Still unlike the serie a in recent years. The English game was well attended by fans. Meaning football is more a religion in England than even Italy. Since Italians once their league faded away. Just decided. Yeah its just football. Its not that important there other priorities we can now do on a weekend than following the Serie A which has had its day, it was great while it lasted. That would never happen in England. The following in England would be there no matter what or how bleak things get. So even during the bad years. Crowds flocked to football in England in the 1970s and 1980s despite crowd trouble and bad stadia. The light at the end of the tunnel for English football came at Italia 90 world cup in Italy. Home of the Serie A and the most successful and respected league in the world in this era. I think you explained the glory years of Italian serie a. Well England's unexpeceted good performance at Italia 90 convinced the people who run English football that a root and branch change is required if English footall is to survive and thrive into the 1990s and 21st century. Like what the Serie A has become in the last 10 years English football was back then. In 1991 all English clubs were allowed back in the fold in Europe. So its no surprise the English premier League was launched soon after. They scrapped the top tiers and made it the Premier League. You wouldn't bet against them being successful. London was a global hub. TV Media moghuls like Ted Turner and Rupert Murdoch and others already had their headquarters for Europe there. Now English Football asked them to invest in English football and beam it to far flung corners. English football already had a type of following in places like South East Asia , East Asia, Africa, Australia and North America a market ready made and ready to go this was supercharged and monetised. However the quality of English football in the early years was not great. I remember watching it. I am a huge serie A fan. So I was rest easy in the fact that supremacy of Serie A would never be challenged by up and coming leagues like English League. Boy was I wrong within 3 years of the the launch the EPL was already putting pressure on the Serie A. Also more an more foreign players were moving to England also the football was more attacking and seen to be entertaining by more and more people. I got seriously concerned by the mid to late 1990s. That the decline of Serie A was on and all the good things about football that came from the serie a would be lost forever. English football went from strength to strength in the mid to late 1990s. Better stadiums. Old dilapidated stadiums were upgraded or made much safer. Better policing and surveillance making it very difficult for crowd violence or trouble to occur which was a blight on the English game for so long. Campaigns like kick racism out of football and no to crowd violence were launched and promoted. It looked English football had almost completely solved much of the problems that plagued it in the 1970s and 1980s. By the dawn of the 21st century of the Premier Leauge. Meanwhile Serie A sadly for me as a fan of the Italian game became a shadow of its former self.

To everyone saying "this is just like the super league" 3 teams get promoted every year which means any team can play in it and no one is safe. Which was the main problem people had with the SL, a lot of punters said it was less about the money and more about the death of competition. But aye I hate it how football before 92 is almost treat like it doesn't count

With regards to how it came about with money and greed is exactly the same. Sky Sports is extremely hypocritical to go on the attack against the club's that aligned with the ESL because IT IS THE SAME. Yes, there is still promotion and relegation and the ESL would've killed that off but really, that's just to save face for the Prem/Sky as you still have the established elites and once you're promoted, it's all about survival rather than challenging for the top honours.

I'd say it's easier, at least for the top players. The gap between them and the other teams is much wider now. A goalscorer for a top side will get more chances than they used to in the 80s, for example.

Great video. Novel concept. Making the top believe that the teams at the bottom of the foundation are worth the investment. Look I am a American who loves all America sports. But when I was introduced to soccer in the mid 1990’s I feel in love with the relegation formula. I still wish there was more playoff Football (soccer) in England because those games are intense. Plus I can root for whoever I like ..My favorite teams are Dortmund in Germany. in England I like Blackburn Rovers, Leeds, Chelsea, Leicester City, Brentford, Derby, Sheffield Wednesday, ect, ect..I am sure I like others !! Poor Bolton In the Premier League from 1995 to 2012. Adrift in the Champions League from 2012-2016. Relegated to League one in the 2016-17 season. Back up for 2 years. Back down. Now holy crap smashed down to League Two. I feel bad for the fans who root for clubs like this who have bad owners like the NFL club I root for. (Lions) I hope they get new owners to help them. I just really enjoy watching the game. Brentford vs Fulham should be a fun match to watch next week. Winning team sure gets a piece of the EPL pie !

Here in North America, we often dismiss older championships as well. But at least here it sort of makes sense, because leagues are constantly adding new teams (for example, my favourite hockey club last won a cup in 1967 when there were only 6 teams participating and now in the same league there are 31 with a 32nd coming in 2021.) Adding new clubs is a business decision for sure much like the premier league breaking away would've been, but it also heavily impacts what everyone's season because now you have to play double/triple/whatever else amount of teams than you would've just a few seasons prior. With the premier league, it literally was just "hey let's make more TV money" and everyone decided "yup. This is when football is born

In 1992, the 1st division and european cup were rebranded into the premier league and champions league mainly because of, as you even stated, money. 1992 also just happened to be the year Man Utd won their 1st of 13 premier league titles meaning Man Utds domination over english football began when football became about money.
