The invention of maps is a fascinating chapter in human history beginning 5,000 years ago. People throughout history and across the globe all attempted to create a picture of our world. How do human beings know what lies beyond the sea? Did Marco Polo have an atlas to show him the route to China? Did the Romans record the borders of their vast empire on maps? For thousands of years, unknown distant lands guarded their secrets and yet, they were described in travel books. The Face of The World has fascinated people of every age and culture.

Did I miss the part about the persecution of Galileo?
@jefflewis4
@jefflewis4 2 года назад
Its at 7:10 Galileo's assertion the earth and planets revolved around the sun got him in hot water with the church. It went against the Catholic Church's teaching that the earth was the center of the universe. He ended up having to completely recant it else face torture and death. He ended up under house arrest for the rest of his life. As the video notes at 7:35 the church did not acknowledge Galileo was right until 1992.

No. The church told Galileo to promote both theories with equal prominence, which was sensible - without a theory of gravity, knowledge of other moons, the scale of the universe and an understanding of momentum it's far from obvious which theory is right. Galileo didn't do as he was told, so that was why he was prosecuted. Effectively contempt of court. The truth doesn't fule the 'science vs religion' debate so it's ignored in favour of this lie

Agreed. Modern academia, and those with a "experts rule" agenda, wish to divorce religion and science by misrepresenting history.

Indeed, they need to read more source documents from the time. The Church held to the accepted science of the day, which would have been the Aristotelian/Ptolemaic view. Even the Pope of the time was interested in learning from Galileo, but the main issue was the Church forbade Galileo from teaching the heliocentric view as true, not from teaching it. In simple terms, he wasn't able to prove it was true. It's not correct history to frame it as "science" vs. the bible (or interpretations of it). I remember watching a movie in a science class back in the early 70s about Galileo which stuck to the script of the lie. There was one scene where the movie portrays Galileo pleading with church bishops to just look through his telescope but they refused. What exactly are you going to point your telescope at that will instantly reveal the heliocentric view is correct rather than a geocentric view?

Can’t say I blame him for recanting- either that or execution by burning. Not everyone had the courage to stand up to the church but check out the dude Giordano Bruno. We don’t talk enough about him; he chose to stick to his beliefs and was burned at the stake.

The Catholic Church doesn't know its own Bible. In the Book of Job, in the Old Testament, it says in chapter 26, verse 10, "He [our Creator] has described a circle on the face of the waters", describing the earth as a sphere. The Book of Job began being written in the year, 1657 B.C.E. and was completed in 1473 B.C.E. Don't forget the Roman Catholic Church was formed "after" the great Apostasy set into the Christian Church. Original Christianity, as begun by Jesus Christ, would have never burned anybody at the stake for any reason! The Bible not only describes the precipitation & the evaporation cycle as well as our DNA.

Uhm, nope, just nope; A circle is not a globe. Also, what does "a circle on the face of the waters" even mean? Well, i guess it can mean anything you want it to mean, but even then, a circle is not a globe. Also, the ancient greek of the oldest texts about this don't use the word for circle, they use the word for disc. And there is no way to even begin to interpret "disc" as "globe" without some truly impressive mental gymnastics. Apart from that it doesn't describe any of the other things you say either, like eg DNA. There is nothing in the bible that would make anyone think of the concept of DNA, however after already knowing about DNA, some of the wordsalad in the bible could be interpreted as being about DNA, however it might just as well be about the maiting behaviour of the bullet ant. There is no way to know without actualy asking the ppl who wrote it. As long as the scriblings in the bible don't lead directly to new discoveries, they are nothing but wordsalad retro-actively being reinterpreted to fit new discoveries.

I guess with some creativity, looking down directly from way up, a globe could be described as a circle...maybe. But a circle is almost never is never a globe.

Instead of actually explaining that Galileo was pushing his theory without any proof which is why the Catholic Church was prosecuting him, this is just an anti-Catholic video. History is more nuanced than "Catholic Church bad an protostant reformation good."

Humans have existed for over 100,000 years and yet it's been hardy 100 years since we have been able to put together an accurate image of the world we live on. We have barely left the cradle in terms of technological innovation.

The reality is not as interesting and media-sexy story as the version in which Galileo Galilei was arrested and convicted for practicing science, studying the stars and because of his heliocentricism. And people like this version more because the church and Christianity are portrayed in it as the villain of the story, the antagonist who hates and opposes all science and arts, and this is a much more interesting version than reality.
@lisapop5219
@lisapop5219 2 года назад
It came from protestatism. Copernicus first put forth the theory and he was a Catholic priest. There was no problem because it was a theory that could not be proven or disproven. Galileo stated unequivocally, even though he couldn't prove it, that it was true. He then published a book mocking the pope that supported his research, as backwards & archaic. The pope supported his research. It was a theory because there was no way yet to prove it. Galileo wanted people to listen and believe without evidence. History doesn't repeat but it rhymes
