I was widowed young, so I purchased a double plot for my husband and myself. He chose the cemetery, and my brother selected the plot. I don't think it is morbid at all. For 22 years, I have seen my name etched on a stone bench!

I agree with you, I have a plot that my parents bought for me when I was about 22 years old with theirs, and since both brothers are gone along with my parents I'm thinking about buying a marker/stone for me so my 4 kids don't have to. A friend of mine passed away at home in 2021 in SF and he's buried in a family plot in a Catholic cemetery outside of Detroit Michigan and his sister told me that his marble marker was coming from India and would take about a year

Hi Steve I'm in Birmingham, UK and I so agree with you. I live between two of the biggest cemeteries in the City. The one I liked most and is nearer to my home is now full. Has been for 10 years. My parents, and umpteen friends are already rested in this cemetery, and I so wanted to be there too. (I don't much like the other one). Anyway, I had the foresight of contacting the City office and asked if they knew of anyone who was selling their plot in that cemetery. I prayed, and my God answered. He knew I really wanted there to be my resting place. Within 2 months, He came through, for me. I had an email from the city office and was given a lady's name who has retired to the south of England and was selling her plot. Now here, is how my God is good and faithful. The cemetery covers an area of 103 acres, and is closed to new burials. So, what are the odds that the plot I bought is just 5 rows away from my parents and friends?. Friends can't believe how lucky I am. I said no! not lucky, but blessed, it's God's hand. Now, other friends are trying to do the same thing. God is good , all the time. Thanks Steve for sharing your story. And may young Mr Powell RIP., such a sad story.

I almost lost my only son in a motorcycle accident. I ask my congregation , my family and friends to pray for him especially since he was given 50/50 chance of living. I would go and pray to him on each hospital he was transfered to. After the fourth hospital nhe was released after 7 months. He still have some memory and other issues but I thank God he is still on this earth. I have my plot near both my parents plus 2 plots for both my son and my daughter.

Very sad story! My mom passed in 1995 and she had pre-planned and paid for her funeral which helped us who were grieving her loss. A few months after she died I bought a plot near her and my brother and uncle did as well. About 6 years ago I paid for the other costs involved in my burial so my children won't have to.

"The Thin Man" series are some of my favorite movies. I love William Powell. I had no idea about this tragedy. How awful to feel so helpless that you resort to taking your life. And also to be the parent of the child who did so. It's all just so very sad. I always said I was born in the wrong era. @@TheGraveyardChannel so true it’s seeming to me that today’s actors have come to the conclusion that they’re not going to do anything more than they have to for a paycheck and that they’re always thinking that they’re worth more than they are. And classic actors like William Powell put their heart and soul into their work and they were grateful for the work they had because of the economic impact like the depression and the wars it’s just my opinion and I don’t know what anyone else thinks

Yeah. I knew someone who ended his life in a similar violent way. He too had been ill and in pain for some time. I remember when I first heard his manner of suicide, I felt faint and later just cried and cried. When you love someone, the idea of someone "hurting" them that way is so devastating -- even if they are doing it to themselves. I guess you just wish their leaving could have been more "peaceful." Sorry if this comment made no sense, I haven't thought about this for a while. RIP to Mr. Powell, his wife, and their son. And no, I don't think it's weird. I think it would be comforting to know that you are going to end up where you want to be.

I have two plots in my hometown. In the oldest cemetery in the city. One for me and one for my husband. Chose this cemetery because my mom was buried here. Then my younger sister (I have her one of my plots and bought another), then my dad. So I will be married with my family. Neither my sister nor I had kids. Her husband will not be buried here. Today is my sisters 62nd birthday. She’s been gone 10 years. I miss my mom and dad and her so much. I go to my hometown at least twice a year to visit their resting place and place new flowers. Hello ❤ I haven’t chosen my resting place yet but my mom and grandmother both picked out their grave plots years ago. My grandmother even had her headstone placed 10 +years prior to my grandfather’s death in 2017. My grandmother is now 90 and has late stage dementia. My parents divorced when I was 6, and my mother remarried then divorced. My father and her have always remained friends and even helped my father in the last few years before he passed in 2020. I think some of my relatives on his side of the family think I’m crazy but I’m burying his cremated remains in mother’s second plot. Probably only makes sense to me since they’re my parents and my father never remarried.

William Powell's final film role was in Mister Roberts (1955), as the ship's doctor. The film became a classic, and William's scenes with Henry Fonda and Jack Lemmon were great; same with the Sick Call scene, with the crew members describing to him, their many ailments.

Back in the 80s when I was in my 20s I purchased burial plots in the old Santa Ana cemetery. My family plot was beside an easement and the cemetery was selling them. I bought two and my parents bought two. Ultimately I have always known just exactly where I will be buried. I just moved to the east coast, this will be the first time in 67 years I won’t be there to flower the old folks. We even adopted a child’s grave across the street, he’s alone in a large family plot. It was a 5 minute ride to the cemetery. I thought it was funny. Later when they were needed it was a great weight off our shoulders during a very stressful and sad time. My husband and I are all set up in a veterans cemetery. It is also much nicer to make these arrangements when you are healthy. You can think clearly, and in our case, laugh and joke about it. My father arranged for prepaid funerals for his mother, Dad and Mum so we wouldn’t have to worry about expenses, etc. It made it a bit easier when I had to arrange Dad’s funeral (my mum passed away 7 years earlier) as most of the decisions had already been made by him, including having the headstone engraved with everything but the date of his death. My grandmother is buried with my grandfather, who was a soldier in WW1, in a war grave. My parents are also buried in the same cemetery, and I will be buried with them as I am on my own. I purchased a plot when I came to Florida because the cemetery is so interesting and old. There are civil war graves up to the present. The first grave here was a woman murdered by Indians. I love that there are no set rules on how the graves are installed. No rows and lots of family plots. The thing I like best is the old trees. My plot is in the green section which has a little brook and a place to sit. And you even get a small head stone that so many green plots in other cemetery don't offer. I will have a comfortable place and my visitors will surely love to stroll the grounds. Once a year there is a nice older lady that gives grave tours and points out the odd, unusual or famous graves. It is a rest in my mind to have a nice place all paid for so that my relatives don't have to do it.

I felt so relieved a few years ago when I made arrangements and purchased my niche (next to my husband who died at age 51). I’m 68 now and everything is paid for so my daughters won’t have to make stressful decisions. I work as a hospice chaplain and am dismayed at seeing people in their 80as and 90s who haven’t even thought about it. Like you can cheat death?!

Thanks, Steve, for sharing this personal video. Your comments at the end about your eye drops made me think of the recent reporting on contaminated eye drops that sadly have resulted in some serious complications (including blindness) for the drops' users. You may want to confirm with your eye doctor that there hasn't been a recall on the eye care products he has had you using. There's always something!

Sad story...I immediately thought of "The thin Man" series. Your place of future interment is beautiful, Steve...and I have seen you visit it before, I didn't realize how close you will be to famous celebrities/entertainers. I think I mentioned in an earlier video, that I too have my place of future internment....a "quad" crypt at Cypress Lawn, main mausoleum, in Colma, CA. With my mother and sister. So...there are two spaces remaining for my brother (if he so desires) and me.....interment and related expenses already pre-paid. And we are right across from the side by side single crypts of actor Gregory Peck's mother and stepfather. Cemetery staff who were there, still talk of when he arrived to chose/purchase the location for them. They talk about how nice he was. As always, thank you for this visit.

Hi Donnee, thanks for sharing that story with us. I love Colma and that cemetery. That’s neat you’ll be with your family like that. I know I’ve shared my future final resting place quite a few times on this channel but people keep asking me where it is all the time, so whenever I’m there doing a video nearby, I mentioned it again lol. Most people don’t go back and watch the older videos so that’s why I get the same questions over and over, which is fine. As always, thanks for sharing with us. 👍

I grew up here in northern California San Fransico Bay Area. Colma, and north to Colma is the city of San Burno, which both cities have A LOT of cemeteries! WOW! There are many, many famous historic people buried in the Colma cemeteries. I think there are some famous names from the old west, and there are some famous big very wealthy family's tombs in some of the Cemeteries in Colma. One of the tombs has a Tiffany stain glass window on it. I think they have tours. One of these days I'll take a tour.

About a year ago I had an allergic reaction to drops used for dilation. There were two drops. My doctor said they had to switch manufacturers because they couldn’t get drops from the original one. It was horrible. He gave me something to counteract the reaction and I was fine. Now when I have my eyes examined he just gives me the third drop right away. Why I’m telling you this is because there is something your doctor can prescribe for you to relieve your discomfort.

My husband and I will be using his aunt and uncles original plots. He ended up in Jefferson Barracks but at the time spouses or children were not buried with the service member. The cemetery is actually by chance the same one with both our grandparents and my great grand parents already there so if our son chooses to he can see us and other family members . The best part is my grandfather was the one that taught me you fall for someone with a child that is now your child no matter what. That's how I got my son so when he feels the need to visit or talk to our headstones he will be able to see the headstone of the person who shaped that.

If you happen to be going to the area anyway, I would greatly appreciate Your time and effort in Making my dad's memorial page more complete, not only for me, but the rest of his family who have never been able to pay their respects in person! I remember when you first got started with your channel that a whole lot of the places you visited either didn't have GPS or Worse, The GPS was wrong. A lot of your early work was just fixing it to where people could find the location of these markers or graves of Stars or loved ones They haven't been able to find before. I just double checked the weather for tomorrow and it’s a 90% chance of rain, so it may be a few days before I can get over there. It rained all day today and yesterday here in Palm Springs. It’s so unusual to have this much rain. It looks like it’s going to be sunny the rest of the week though starting on Tuesday. But I have lots of other appointments this week, so I’m not sure when I will get over there, but hopefully by the end of the week. Are you planning to scan and upload photos of your dad to his find a grave memorial page? That would really be nice to go along with the headstone once I photograph it.

That person would have to be in the most dreadful mental place. No, I have not picked out my gravesite either. Part of me wonders if I am buried will someday it be developed in the bodies moved. It has happened so many times before. But I think you’re gonna be safe there with all the famous people. I’m surprised there’s still graves size available. Also… My eye doctor had put me on drops for dry eye, and I had the same reaction and just about everybody. I know that’s had drops for their eyes. Have had these reactions and the drops are very gel like. I decided just to keep with artificial tears. Look forward to more videos!!!

Like with others, my wife passed away from cancer when we were both forty nine. I picked a plot which is about twenty feet from the mausoleum where my parents, grandparents, and my grandparents life long friends are. It’s rather odd to have seen where I’ll be buried. I used to go quite often to visit my family and other people I know buried there but it’s been almost thirteen years since my wife passed and have only gone to visit twice. When my husband passed away four years ago this February, I had his ashes buried at our V.A. cemetery. He served in the Air Force for 10 years and he and I had decided many years ago that our V.A. cemetery was the most beautiful cemetery just outside of town partway up a mountain. I, too, will be buried there but my name is not on his marker until I pass away. I do get sad when I go there to edge around the stone and place flowers. It’s very quiet and isolated but in the summer the Meadowlarks sing, I can see mountains 30 miles away on one side and more very near the site and I remember our 45 very happy years together. I still wear my wedding ring and have no desire to marry again. He was the best husband in the world.

I have chosen my final resting place - although haven't paid for it yet. Four blocks from my house is an old historic cemetery (founded in 1840) called The Woodlands. Famous people buried in there includes the artist Thomas Eakins, the original Mr. Campbell of Campbell's Soup, the uber-rich Drexel banking family, the dentist of European royalty Dr. Thomas W. Evans - who erected the tallest cemetery obelisk in a private cemetery in the US - as tall as a 10 story building, and many Civil War era generals, admirals, and elected officials. It's full of interesting statuary, monuments, mausoleums, etc. If you ever come to Philly I'll give you a tour of the place!

I think that my friends thought it a bit strange, but I acquired my cemetery plot, head stone, and foot stone when I was 24 years old (40 years ago). My lot is next to my parents as we purchased six burial plots as a family, and chose head and foot stones that coordinated for all six plots. We were only able to have foot stones as our lots were located in the original plat of the cemetery that dated to the1800s and didn't have restrictions upon monuments. My grandparents are buried about 300 yards away, and their monument (placed in 1919) measures 5 ft. by 4 ft. at the base and is over 10 feet tall and they also have foot stones.
