Why did Turkey set demands on Finland & Sweden joining NATO? | WION Originals

Sweden & Finland will soon apply for NATO membership. There were apprehensions about Turkey not supporting their NATO bid. Now Turkey has laid down demands for NATO membership of two Nordic countries. “They need to stop supporting terrorist organisations. The defence industry restriction or the prohibitions on export permits imposed to an ally such as Turkey should definitely be lifted,” Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu said. Meanwhile, US & NATO are confident that Turkey will not impede membership.

All the Turks support Erdoğan's stance regarding this issue. As Turks we know that Westerners can be either very ignorant or that they are simply pretending not to be aware of facts that are as clear as day. I find it abhorrent that Westerners continue to support YPG, a terrorist organization that has committed war crimes and is using child soldiers aged 10-16. I an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Kurdish fighter Zind Ruken expanded on the PKK-YPG relationship. “Sometimes I’m a PKK, sometimes I’m a PJAK [the PKK-allied affiliate, active in Iran], sometimes I’m a YPG. It doesn’t really matter. They are all members of the PKK. The YPG’s casualty data confirms linkages between international PKK-linked groups. Kurds from Turkey constitute a total of 49.24 percent of the YPG’s self-reported casualties between January 2013 and January 2016. YPG martyrdom notices show that 359 Turkish citizens, 323 Syrians, 32 Iranians, seven Iraqis, two Australians, two Azeris, and a person from England, Germany, Greece, and the United States each have been killed fighting since January 2013. The casualty data closely reflects known YPG offensives, including the 2014 clashes around Ras al-Ain with the Nusra Front, the battle for Kobani in September 2014, and the 2015 YPG-led offensive towards the Euphrates river and Ain Issa, a town near ISIS’s de facto capital of Raqqa. According to the data, the battle for Kobani accounted for 38.95 percent of overall casualties and 44.4 percent of the Turkish Kurds killed with the YPG between 2013 and 2016. The PYD’s political ambitions inside Syria are matching closely with those of the PKK. They pose a longer term threat to Turkish security. The YPG can be said to be the Syria branch of the HPG (People's Defense Forces), which is the PKK’s military wing. Since its establishment, a large number of the YPG’s manpower has been supplied from HPG terrorists in Turkey. Military and ideological training of Syrian recruits have been provided by HPG members and includes subjects such as the history of the PKK, leadership, Öcalan’s biography, and the history of Kurdistan. During the trainings, which are mainly conducted in the Turkish language, Öcalan’s own writings and Turkish translations of foreign political thinkers are read and discussed. Whitehouse officials have acknowledged that there are substantial ties to the PKK. Talat Silo, a spokesperson of the SDF, stated that the YPG takes direct orders from the PKK. Aldar Khalil is a PYD official who used to be a PKK commander. As a result to the arms and financial aid provided by our so-called allies our people are dying. Sweden and Finland openly support terrorists and harbors them in their countries. We cannot and will not disregard this matter. Sweden or Finland's national security isn't more important than our national security.

NATO is a defense alliance where n attack on one is an attack on all. Why should Turkey put its neck on the line for Sweden and Finland? abhi brodha Nato is obligated to defend its member nations. You see Putin picked carefully who to attack. Ukraine and Georgia are not Nato member and that is why they are attacked. Next on the list was Moldova. It is also not a nato member. Russia will pick to invade small nations and not big nations. Also it want to invade those near its border so that it can make it part of Russia. Only those nations near to Russia border need to fear, other nations far away from Russia need not fear. Please go and look at the map and you will understand better.

Being part of the NATO defensive alliance mean if you're country is attacked, all other NATO countries will come and fight invaders with you. Two countries that have sanctioned Turkey, and Sweden has openly hosted the leaders of and funded militants (YPG/PKK) to the tune of hundreds of millions at war with Turkey, leading to thousands of deaths. So why would Turkey vote in favor of them? Turkey is the second-largest military by troops in NATO, it's the only member that actually borders Iraq, Syria, Iran and the South Caucasus alike, and it's the only member with any notable influence in Central Asia. Without Turkey NATO literally falls apart and is just EU+US, at which point why even have a second name? During the Cold War, Turkey single-handedly held NATO's eastern flank, holding back Soviet expansionism into the warm waters of the Mediterranean, without which Syria and Greece would have become Soviet satellite states, which would have dominoed into Egypt and Ethiopia becoming Soviet satellite states, then the USSR controlling the Suez Canal and taking over several of the oil producing countries of the region. The entire Cold War would've been different.

The reason for the dissolution of the Soviet Union is that Russia invaded Afghanistan in a region you never knew existed. America was the happiest. Because he wanted Russia to lose its power. Russia had to leave the territory of Afghanistan. This event led to the dissolution of the soviets. America tried the same in Ukraine, knowing that this war would weaken Russia if it escalated into City Wars. America has been stalling for years by saying that we will take Ukraine to NATO. He waited for Russia's move. When the move he wanted came, he cornered Russia and used Ukraine as a pawn. The second trump card of the USA was to include Sweden and Finland in NATO. Russia hunted on the hunting road. So you see, it's a pity on the Ukrainian people
@bhalchandra13

What a great loads of false news. 1. USSR didn't invade Afghanistan but Afghan government asked for help. 2. USSR dissolved because first Chernobyl incident cause a lot of problems then the differences between Gorbachev and Yeltsin. Yeltsin created freedom movements in other parts and so on and so forth. 3. USSR got backlash in Afghanistan because 1985 US started funding mujahedeen providing arms and created the terrorists Taliban from which US troops lost in 2021 The last part about Ukraine is somewhat correct. All America is doing to humiliate and corner Russia and not for the Ukrainians.

@@kesscarlton8759 Ukraine is closer to Turkey then anyone else. Before the 2022 war started, other than the US, UK and Turkey, none of the EU states wanted to send them weapons. Instead the EU sold $400M in weapons/hardware to Russia since 2014. Turkey actively built up Ukraine's military industry going back years now. Ukraine is to build the engines for the large _Bayraktar Akinci_ drone. It also signed deals to co-produce the _TAI Anka_ and _Bayraktar TB2_ drones on Ukrainian soil. Defensive alliances are the only option for smaller countries facing a much larger potential aggressor state such as Russia. I am surprised that SEATO has not been revived now China is threatening its smaller neighboring countries in Asia and the Pacific Rim. India often claims "nobody came to our aid" during aggression by China and Pakistan. But that is exactly what happens when a country is non-aligned, you have no allies, you are on your own.
