unfortunately i guessed/expected the video to be a lot longer than what it ended up being, so i never considered setting up further testing. if i could go back in time, i would've worked out how to apply changes to the civilian so we can see if things are any better if he has more health, speed, weapons, etc. but you live and learn :'(

This is why I love how TF2C did it by making him the timer, allowing for multiple deaths, and by giving him a healing ring that heals everyone, including himself, and a small boost that he can give to other players, so they're incentivized to actually defend the fat man.

@LeafMaltieze
@LeafMaltieze 20 дней назад
@@insertname1837 Kind of. In TF2 Classic, Civilian gives a weak passive heal, and speedboost to anyone near him, and has an 8 second minicrit boost he can use on a teammate once every 30 seconds. He's more like a different flavor of medic, than a payload cart, because he can't be used as cover, and he doesn't give metal/ammo. The biggest change is definitely that the game has a timer to capture, which lowers by 30 seconds when the Civilian dies, and players can choose to swap away from the Civilian if they don't want to play as him, which allows someone else to play the class. In the Original VIP mode, the round was over if the Civilian died even once, and they couldn't swap away.

He wasnt confusing, I played plenty of TFC. One thing this YT'ber, and mappers arent doing with respect to this game mode is abiding by the class & team comp restrictions inherent to the original map. Assassins were all snipers to a max of 5, and bodyguards were only HWG (Heavy), Soldier and Medic with no cap. This was a crucial part of the game mode, and what made it fun and I dont know why mappers now with Vscript didnt respect that aspect.

Going to guess you didnt play Hunted in TFC so why are you even weighing in on your hypothetical opinion that itd be boring? The last time I played it, despite showing people the routes the score was 1 win Hunted/BGs, 10 wins Assassins. Honestly, its a different era and I feel most people who didnt start with either qtf or tfc cant wrap their brain around the concept of a mod with certain team size/class limits. Theorizing how to fix Civilian makes it pretty obvious how you can arrive at Payload. Problem: The civilian is boring to play. Solution: Civilian is an NPC. Problem: NPC pathfinding could lead the civilian into danger. Solution: Dedicated path for civilian. Problem: Civilian has little knowledge of game state and may walk into danger. Solution: Civilian only moves when team is nearby. Problem: Civilian can still be left alone. Solution: Civilian is invincible. Problem: Civilian looks stupid. Solution: A bomb!

"Escort the VIP" is a gamemode that can be tricky to pull off depending the gameplay of your game. My first and favorite iteration of this gamemode was in the game SWAT 4 (2005) - Bodyguards must escort the VIP to the other end of the map. - Assassins must capture and hold him prisoner for 2 minutes before being allowed to kill him and win. - If the assassins kill the VIP before those 2 minutes of holding him hostage, bodyguards wins. I liked it because as the VIP you knew that the enemy team would not outright shoot you on sight as killing you too soon would lose them the round. But if you grew too bold and tried to rush the map alone, they would easily capture you and start the 2 minutes timer, pressuring your bodyguards into freeing you. And for that they would have to push through the entire assassins team now guarding you. Though obviously, SWAT 4 & Team Fortress 2 are two entirely different games :P Just figured I'd share my personal experience with that type of gamemode.

TF2 Classic has the VIP game mode with the Civilian class, and both problems you mention are fixed: the Civilian has 200 HP, a passive healing aura that heals about as much as Medic's passive regen and a right-click ability to boost an ally with mini-crits. So no more threat of dying of chip damage without a Medic and more stuff to do than just waddling around. @Ev3rardd 20 дней назад
You know, the civilian gamemode actually creates a really good use case for spies friendly disguises, assuming he is actually permitted to disguise as the civillian. You could have one or two extra fake civilians running around during a push to help draw enemy fire away from the real civilian, all while sewing confusion on the enemy team.
@Chris_Sizemore
@Chris_Sizemore 20 дней назад
The Civilian breaks a fundamental assumption in a team game. It isn't possible for a single player to make a team lose in any other mode. If the Civilian just goes AFK the entire match, his team can't win. If the Civilian wants to troll his team, they can't stop him. You can't even vote kick him because that means the VIP is gone. Being able to limit the goal to a literal track they have to follow lets every class showcase their abilities. Engies can build nests and teleporters along the route. You can't do that as effectively when the Civilian can take multiple different routes and change his mind on the route. And also, with Civilian spy becomes way over powered. So does sniper who doesn't have to stop the other side from advancing, he just needs to kill one guy. You can say the same applies to Saxton Hale, but if that player goes AFK it just means an easy win for the other team. That isn't a problem. Neither is Saxton Hale trolling. Who exactly is he disappointing? Payload solves a lot of issues. It even introduced an opportunity to have a mobile dispenser to keep the game rolling. Having to leave the target to get ammo would be a huge problem without it.
@SnackPatrol
@SnackPatrol 18 дней назад
You could votekick civilians in TFC on any server worth their salt through AMX Mod, or an active admin presence. You'd lose the miniround, but someone could then change to Civilian. Also, there were team size & class restrictions in Hunted which for whatever reason this video makes absolutely no mention of which is mind-boggling to me. I would honestly take the video down because of that aspect alone if I were the creator because of how important it was to the game mode & how faulty of a comparison it becomes from the rip with this video's premise. Assassins were limited to snipers, capped at 5 total, and Bodyguards were HWG (Heavy), Sniper & Med with no cap. A lot of your criticisms are moot with this in mind. And yes, he could be killed with one shot which was part of the fun (and yes, I am talking about even _as_ the VIP, I played him a lot in TFC). It felt like an actual Assassination attempt scenario & was super fun and interesting knowing you could be taken out at a moments notice if your bodyguards weren't doing their job. Also, because you only ran the risk of any potential encounter being a sniper, 5 max, if you ran into them in the field you had a real chance to beat them as Civilian, especially if teammates were around. It wouldn't be like running into an enemy Heavy, or any other power class where you'd be as good as dead. Also, you can hold the flag in CTF to grief, so no that's not the only mode a single player can make a team lose.
@maxtube1952

@@maxtube1952 No, he didn't mention those restrictions because he didn't do a thorough job on this video, and I guarantee you he didn't realize Assassins were capped at 5 because it doesn't exist on a wiki & you'd have to have played the game. To not acknowledge that the TF2 ports of the map were absent of these restrictions makes 0 sense as a foundation for a comparison. I knew I'd run into this "forced" line of thinking- that's just the game mode bro. The class & team comp restrictions are the ruleset & are what make it fun, & balanced. Do people cry "Omg we are *forced* to only use melee weapons in medieval? How can a game mode be good when I am *forced* away from blah blah" like bro that's just the ruleset. Ok so it limits a class? So what? So does VSH. Payload limits the time to cap. TF2 limits max players. Medieval limits weapons. The Express lane at the supermarket limits purchases. @@zjanez2868 ...Huh? TF has always been about varied game modes. VSH is as different as they come and was made official. I ran a server and enabled the class resrictions on sd_hunted, a variant of Hunted, literally 12 years ago in TF2 and it worked & was fun, though the team size limit would have balanced it moreso. In fact having those restrictions would allow a mapper to repurpose one of the unused classes to Civilian, along with the player model and all other changes with Vscript. Have you never heard of TF2C? They proved VIP mode could be done. The reason why Escort sort of worked in Team Fortress Classsic 1999 is because there were hardcoded class bans - Attacking team could only play as Soldiers, Medics and Heavies and Defending team could only play as Snipers. And then we are talking about Medic in TFC we are not talking about a squishy walking medkit, but a high damage output slaughter machine, so there will always be atleast 1 Medic helping the team. The vid reads like "I went on a wiki & Googled stuff and I'm going to pretend like I'm an expert." Also, friendly grenade knockback, and being able to stand on your team was important in Hunted. @@realdragon TF2 Classic star game mode is VIP, where BLU has to escort the Civilian so he can capture all control points before the time runs out while RED tries to stop that until the time runs out and, if possible, *assassinate the Civilian.* The Civilian provides near teammates a 20% dmg resistance and a passive health regen of 5 hp/s that increases to up to 15 hp/s, buffs that can still be active through walls (Civ also self heals, but still takes full dmg). Civilian can also mini-crit boost a single teammate every few seconds for mass massacre and +35% heal rate (24 > ~31 hp/s) and Über production (2.5 > ~3.4%/s) for Medics. As Civilian, you also value more your life, as him dying decreases BLU's timer by 30 secs (20 in vip_mineside) and his killer gets guaranteed full Crits for a few seconds. Thus, forcing BLU to stick to Civ for those sweet passives and boosts. Basically, being Civ actually takes some brain and decision making on who you should boost or stick with in order to win, making you part of the slaughter with the right decisions. But if you whiff, you can end in very bad situations or even assist in your own death by boosting a Spy. The best targets for boosts are Heavies, Soldiers and Medics where the best companions are also Heavies and Pyros.

I think it all comes down to punishment. One player drops and everyone goes back to spawn. Even for Red that is hard as the moment to moment gameplay just cuts off all the time. On payload, even if red pushes and rolls over blue, the bomb doesn't care at all. After a while it slowly goes back. Imagen payload, but as soon as the bomb isn't pushed for 3 seconds it teleports back to start and everyone goes back to their spawnrooms. Total hell.

SWAT 4 multiplayer had a great VIP escort mode. The criminals had to capture the VIP rather than kill him, and lost the game if he died. The VIP was poorly armed but was allowed to kill the people trying to catch him, who could only respond with tasers and pepper spray. And if you got captured they had to keep you alive until the timer ran out, so you could shout out the position of your captors and try to crawl away until your team came to rescue you. I don't expect any of this would work in Team Fortress 2's paradigm but it's a cool example of how to make this gametype more fun.

I feel like the civilian could be so much better if he acted as an jack of all trade class. He can't fight for himself, but he would be able to trigger some abilities to help his team to worry less about him, based on the other classes. For exemple, temporary speed boost to match scout's speed, bandages that would act as a medium health pack (maybe throwable too), one time mini sentry that you can't repair/move without another engineer, or a temporary cloak like spy's. Those abilities could be given by the other players by temporaly sacrificing a weapon. For exemple, scout could give him his bonk, spy would give him his cloack watch, etc...

If you want to see an example of a fleshed out "Civilian" type mode, check out Splatoon's Rainmaker. Rather than having a special player, there is a special gun called the Rainmaker. Both teams have goal posts on their sides and they want to bring The Rainmaker to the goal inside the enemy base. The Rainmaker slows you down and forces you into being locked into using it. You also drop it on dying so the mode revolves around protecting the person with the Rainmaker so the other team can't steal it.

I think one way you could make playing the VIP more interesting is including special areas in maps that only he can interact with, perhaps he needs to put in a password to open a door for the team and can access routes that the enemy can’t. It would give the VIP more to do other than get to the finish line and not die.

It's also worth noting that payload is much better when it comes to allowing the defenders time to set up after losing an area due to the cart speed being capped and contesting movement of it being much easier, and that payload allows for progressively changing the map as points are capped (i.e., doors opening and closing to change the layout). While you could do the latter with a hybrid of VIP mode and control point mode, it's still just inferior to both payload and attack/defend, really.

Kid Icarus: Uprising’s multiplayer mode bears some resemblance to TF2 (it even has 9 classes!) and its main mode is a 3v3 called Light vs Dark. The match starts off as a more typical shooter where you just have to get eliminations, which depletes a team health bar at the top of the screen. When the health bar drops to zero, the last eliminated player becomes the Angel and the team health bar is filled back up. Kinda like a civilian, except instead of less powerful, they’re far more powerful. The game ends when one team’s Angel falls. All that to say the game mode COULD work with the civilian inverted to become MORE powerful than other classes while still requiring them to be careful for the sake of the team’s victory. Would really help with the forced team comp and boring to be the civ problems.

When I played for the first time, it was the VIP Civilian gamemode and I talked for the first time (because then I was a F2P in TF2 for over 6 years, and I still was until a few very little days ago), announcing that it's my first time playing. The guy that was made VIP Civilian talked back and it turned into a little conversation. He started a vote to make ME the VIP Civilian, despite me saying that I will likely be horrible. Still, I became the VIP Civilian really soon afterwards. ... It was the best experience I've ever got in TF2 Classic. I was surprisingly great, even though I didn't even know any of the maps. Especially the map we played was a little confusing to me. This happened about 2 years ago. I don't remember it all, but I know that it was great.

Splatoon has a mode which, is conceptually kind of similar called Rainmaker (one player is carrying the rainmaker and they must be escorted to the goal) Difference is the rainmaker itself is a super weapon, it’s very slow and you can’t really fight by yourself but it lets you fire explosive shots that threaten the enemy team, also if you die you drop the rainmaker and someone else can pick it up. It’s kind of like a reverse capture the flag as well.

I remember a very similar game mode back in the day with America's Army 2. The VIP on one team starts the round isolated from both his team and the enemy but both are encouraged to rush to his location, forcing a confrontation around his spawn point. The VIP is armed but not as heavily as the other teams, so it's not boring but rushing headlong into the open towards your rescuers is not smart. AA2 was also arena-style/milsim-heavy with no respawns or health kits but medics to deal with bleeding, so it encouraged smart, slow, deliberate gameplay. I found playing as the VIP one of the more challenging but rewarding positions to play in AA2.

I could see some kind of VIP "football" mode working reasonably well. Where there's a "ball" (maybe a suitcase?) that makes you the VIP and gives you way more health but limits you to a potentially very powerful melee attack when you pick it up. You drop it when you die, or maybe you can throw it, for someone else to pick up. Maybe it resets to your base after a reasonable cooldown, maybe not. That would keep the VIP switching players frequently throughout the match.

played this in team fortress classic back in the day. although anecdotal i loved playing civilian. i boosted morale of the bodyguards by playing up the role of a tyrannical dictator and his loyal guards. it helped that there were really dark spots on the map and was regularly able to confound and hunt down snipers. Snipers tended to look far away , so sneaking up on them was great fun and then kill them with an umbrella of all things. sure i died on occasion. but snipers learned that the bodyguards were not near me and got wonderfully paranoid. especially if i hid for a minute while the bodyguards went ape on them. and for those who sucked at being vip. git gud! but seriously. the adrenaline kick was huge!~

Rather than a weak link in the team, which removes your involvement in the objective, you instead have a giant which is more powerful, but slow. Your job is still to protect them, but your main objective is to clear a path and get them over there. Playing as the giant is also very fun, with such high health and crits letting you mow people down, but you yourself being able to get mowed down just as quick due to the large hitbox. I do wish you spoke about it due to its similarities to the scrapped game mode, but it is still a good video. I do hope some version of Civilian makes it as a community game mode as well.

So, I wonder if making civilian more fun to play could be as simple as giving him some abilities. I know TF2C gave him some abilities to basically turn him into a support class, with damage resists, healing, and a damage boost. The better way is you have a decently large open map, with smaller team sizes overall, the civilian dying means he respawns at the last respawn point you captured, same for his team, he cannot be healed in any way except for preset locations on the map, his own special health packs, and he cannot be ubered, he's just very tanky and decently fast, this means that you will wear him down over time so the game stays pretty aggressive, after that the last major component would be to make sure the civilian knows how to navigate the map well enough thsy he's not just guessing where his goal is, which can be accomplished with having a couple different extraction points, ideally with him needing to be in a capture zone for a short time to use one, and to have them highlighted through the map like Intel is

it is an interesting concept because this exists in games such as Insurgency (called escort) where you have to defend a VIP, the kicker in that game mode though is you only get 1 life, so you can either efficiently clear out enemies and move forward after a standoff or attempt to sneak by since the killing team has to space out resources to cover every entry point, I'd imagine this being agonizing if there is only 1 lane

Actually a "push the cart" existed in QWTF back in 1999 and Q3TF in 2001 already, it was called canalzone which also had a similiar layout to badwater. The first versions were control-point-domination, later someone added a boat which players had to push towards the other end of the map. Overall it was just "Badwater" with worse graphics and half the map size. The Civilian also came from QWTF, it was already available in the first Version of TF in 1997.

I can think of ways to address the problems with the game mode: 1:Make the civilian be chosen by a vote in startup. This means that afk or new players don't end up as the civilian and players that seem or say that are good picks play as him. 2:give the civilian special support abilities. This could be something like a buff to nearby players, placing forward spawn points or calling in airstrikes. This way the civilian has something to do and can use strategies. 3: give the civilian either a strong passive heal and no overheal or a dead-ringer like ability to escape when they are low on health. This means that the medic is no longer needed just to keep him alive.

The Payload pretty much brute forces most if not all the issues born from the civilian. Anyone can push the cart, no one has to play as an special class instead of the main ones, no one changes their playstyle drastically, progress isn't completely lost by getting killed, among others. Top of my head the only way the "Civilian" mode could work is if instead of being an specific class reaching a point once, every class was the civilian and anyone can score reaching a location (and dying), but not all classes are worth the same points and a team can score as much points as they can within a time limite or a score limit, while the opposite team avoids the civilian team to score. In a way, it's similar to the "Beach" mode in Conker's Bad Fur Day. Otherwise, the only way I can see it working with a civilian class, is by assigning more than 1 civilian at random at the time (say, 3 to avoid griefing) and having the team score a certain amount of points (3 per round) or make the points like Left 4 Dead versus, and allow the civilian team to score as much as they can, and next round change teams, whoever gets more points wins. Again, we are going to be here forever figuring ways to make the mode work but Valve must've seen the headache the mode was and just put the payload to get it over with.

Hey Shounic if you didn't know there are some vscript VIP mode style maps in development that fix the problems mentioned here. Anyone can become the vip or ignore becoming vip. The game doesn't end if vip dies, and anyone else can step up and become the vip. There are buffs that can be thrown or utilized to help your teammates and not feel like a burden. It's CP where the only capping can happen when the vip is on the point. It's been pretty fun so far with the play testing I've been part of. Shout-out to Aarmasta.

Speaking of Overwatch, the Push gamemode in that game feels somewhat like a functional version of this VIP gamemode

there are a lot of things that come to mind to try to improve this mode, it has a lot of potential if someone puts some time into it some random thoughts: try to make civilian need to stay in the action, make civilian a dispenser, who is immune or resists damage and regenerates health when teammates are close enough, but dies quickly when alone or hiding, maybe remove or reduce effectiveness of healing/buffs mercs can apply to him give civilian things to do, add checkpoints that are activated when the civ player completes certain tasks, basic things like capturing points or delivering intelligence, or unique things that are more fun/interesting like a puzzle or minigame of some sort, rewards for when civilian kills, maybe longer respawn timer for people he takes out, or each kill counts as a successful escort if multiple are needed maybe even rethinking the mode, no limit to number of civilians maybe give him some sort of loadout so he can be played in different ways, if you can make civilian fun to play its probably by replacing "boring" with "challenging" if every player is a civilian then the mode essentially turns into a death run, look at how those work and why people like those, there are probably some good lessons there that can be applied here

I think it'd be awesome to have a feature where the civilian can choose which teammate to follow and have their powerup for a short amount of time, like double jump when following scout, turning invis (double intake) with spy, increasing heavy speed when following him, etc. It'd allow for better teamwork and can play around with ideas to get him to some extraction zone. Oh and there needs to be like a helicopter to pick him up with ETA time so you dont just use spy all the way the entire map.

I think the gamemode could be good with a few major tweaks: -The Civilian is invincible to player damage, but takes extra knockback from Melee hits, and can die in environmental kills. -Checkpoints are placed along the route. -Upon death, the Civilian respawns at the last checkpoint. -If the Civilian reaches the end before the timer runs out, the Escorts win. -If the timer runs out before that, the Assassins win.

I feel like Civilian actually could work if you make the special VIP player desirable to play/give them something to master. Obviously, they can't be a main DPS class, nor can they be a dedicated support like Medic, but giving them support-like qualities would go a long ways. For instance you could have them throw the equivalent of Mad Milk or Jarate. Allow the melee to mark for death, give them a sandvich to throw, maybe it's the only class that can debuff Engineer buildings from a distance, or give your team a passive buff when near the VIP. Kinda spitballing ideas there but there's plenty you can do to have it be more interactive and more fun.

There is always the possibility of a huntsman sniper rolled a lucksman headshot cross map on the VIP and end the game in 0.1 second when the spawn door rolled up. No other mode offer such experience like it.

I adored playing as the civilian in the original TF. Sadly the game died just after I started, but I remember it was not a very popular game mode.

Chivalry 2 does VIP objectives well. They only pop up at the end of maps, but the game grabs the player with the highest score, so it's likely that they're fairly skilled. Also it gives them a special class with an enormous health pool and an extra powerful weapon. It helps that Chivalry 2 is a melee focused swords and knights type game, so it makes players cluster together a lot in general. Also healing is much more limited so chipping down the VIP is possible. I wonder if a VIP mode could work where instead of the VIP being an unarmed civilian, they get to be a super special class, like a super charged heavy with a crazy mini gun that has infinite ammo and great range and damage. But with the trade off of having super slow move speed and some kind of cap on total health. Idk, it might make a fun experiment but payload hits all of the positives of VIP with less of the drawbacks.
