the problem i had with zombies was everybody thought theyd make it past the initial outbreak. that the thing that took out 90 percent of the population wouldnt affect them.

The vampire obsession in the late 2000s needs its own video. The twilight and vampire diaries era lasted from 2008-2018😂

As someone who's watched 8 Vampire movies in the last 7 days (Getting ready for Halloween), I would love to see this analysis. but I think it would stretch far beyond that era and focus. Would be happy to discuss if you get to work on this!

@@MentalParad1se I've heard some people credit The Lost Boys and/or Interview with a Vampire forgiving us the rise of s3xy vampires and thus leading to their vampire craze of the 2000s. But I haven't seen either of those films yet, so no spoilers on those movies yet.

I can’t say I agree with you politically, but I can appreciate everything you have said from your deconstructed of the meaning of zombies to how in 2015 the nation was divided by politics. I’ve been torn between this idea of the meaning of horror and how to effectively create a modern masterpiece due to how divided everyone is. Half the people fear one thing while the others fear the exact opposite. It becomes about values and how we react to those values being threatened. I am deeply appreciative for this enlightening video into the other side on something I care so deeply for.

With any type of film genre, this stuff goes in cycles. Zombie movies were also popular in the late 70s and 80s until people got bored of that. It became oversaturated in vhs market and got a but repetitive and lazy. The same thing happened again in the 2000s. Why it came back was that the people grew up with watching these flims, started branch out in other areas such as computer games. It breathed new life into genre and a new generation fell love with it. Give another 10/15 years and it be popular again.

I feel like we should bring back small gatherings of zombies in suits. People are often buried in suits and zombies in suits look snazzy. While a small outbreak from a local graveyard would bring that small, personal scale that horror so often has instead being badass vs. world disaster/survival movies.

In a zombie apocalypse, all you need is one gun to defend yourself because with how many people show off their doomsday stash online, you could just wait for them to get killed by the zombies and boom. You got yourself free supplies and you didn't have to waste money prior to the virus to get it.

I think it was cause zombies are terrifying, the idea that there is a force you can't negotiate with, and are unstoppable til you destroy them. I think they really fell off cause people got tired of them, kinda like how we got tired of superhero movies, and all that like. BUT I also think its cause after a while we gotta step back or else we just make a remake of something else and zombies need something new...ishier. I'd love a project zomboid movie, or something like that! would be fun to see more zombies imo

Great video essay, I was in a zombie mania for two years here in Brazil. And I just want to point out few things: There is a cultural cycle in that hype: The symbol first arrives as a common cultural expression, but it took decades to be a real hype. I mean, you need an iconotype (Not universal archetype, but inside a specific culture) of zombies before the mania, a definition, a shape that people understand. When post 9/11 came, there was 2 responses: positive and negative. We watched the rise of Super Heroes and Zombies in pop culture. Images of salvation or survival during crisis. And then we put these images into motion in our lives, because that's why we need stories. We crave for moving symbols, myths. We don't create it during the crave, it would be like driving a car and inventing it at same time. But we explore that to its limits: intuitive storytelling, exploring the lore and how to express it, social commenting, commenting the social comment, cheap stereotype and finally parody. Every symbol has a limit to its expression, the time it takes to unfold all its possibilities depends on how potent and how instructive the symbol is. More than that, how many symbols it generates, some symbols can form civilizations, some creates commercial hypes, others are just the meme of the week. It starts with a simple and naive idea, it grows to respond reality, the market multiply the ready-made idea, it becomes repetitive, shallow and boring, parody gives new short life, and it dies out. And the next obsession, if you remember, were the dystopias. Same principle of dying world, but not a civilization collapse, but a government nightmare. That concept got really closer to reality than zombies, cuz post 9/11 was not a no-man's land, but an increasing mass surveillance state, specially because we are in the age of mass data collection. The dystopian imagination worked against and for Trump. Fanatics anti-science turning democracy into an Iranian fascist theocracy vs a corporatocracy taking your self-defense away and indoctrinating your children. The state is so powerful we are afraid of those in charge, and polarization puts our fears in a feeding loop. PS: I made also a comment on The Mummy video, and how it was inside a racist occultist literature. I hope you like it.

The zombie genre didn't die out because of low budget, low quality movies, over-saturation of the theme, or maybe because the biggest TV show on the subject that you didn't even bother to watch it had a very bad sequence of really bad seasons, No of course it's cuz orange man bad was elected, how could I not thought about that huh?

A good example of classic voodoo style zombies in modern media would be Hunt:Showdown, where the “grunts” are voodoo zombies being controlled by some sort of evil entity from another dimension, it’s a really cool setting and I wish we actually saw something like that in more mainstream media. A great twist on the modern idea of what a zombie is

Obsessions and fads like these are ALWAYS generational things, they stop being cool the moment it's clear that they represent one generation because as soon as that happens the younger generations seek to distinguish themselves.

In that case why hasn't the superhero movie genre died out yet? I remember in the mid-to-late 2010s people were saying how tired they were of superhero films being everywhere and how they felt fatigue, and here we are in 2023 with people still having fatigue with superhero movies.
@CoronaMage
@CoronaMage Год назад
@@kittykittybangbang9367 The superhero genre is dying right now. This is it, it's happening in the present moment. Take a look at the box office releases over the past 4 years. It almost perfectly mirrors the downfall trend in popularity that once represented one of the old kings of cinema genres: the wild west films.
