...I had an unhealthy mal-adaptive crush on a girl named Autumn in middle-school. I'm guessing it's supposed to be him moving on, either forwards or into the same psychological pattern (Autumn being the next season...I didn't say it was a good idea, it's just what I notice from description, I haven't watched the movie yet).

Legit did not know Barbie's arc in the film was her wanting to be more autonomous. When she became human at the end, I thought that was so out of nowhere and kind of undercut the feminism a bit Cuz in the movie, Barbie is sad that she's no longer the perfect, stereotypical Barbie, and so she becomes human. And I just felt like wow, what a missed opportunity to tell the audience that Barbie was never meant to be perfect. And that with all her imperfections and her struggles, Barbie (main character) was even more of a true Barbie than she was before

Your essay was really full with baggages of selective angles, apprehension and justification. It's like you know a lot people will disagree, but you still had to put it out there for reasons. Watching this feels like someone is being oppressed and suffocating. Good job, because you created something that is exactly the opposite of how a lot of people feel about Before Sunrise.

I also would like to add how similar were young beatrice and diane, both had a sensitivity towards world problems, very likely scholars and intelligent, both came from an unloving home that held them back, both first dated a guy who couldn't love them, i like to think that if diane dind't have that abortion, she could have been a mother like bea, wich is really sad

I think another reason for the dislike of Diane is the fact a lot of people can see themselves in her. She isnt an antro animal, or a celebrity, or anything like that. Shes a person dealing with their issues who isnt given the grace or time to deal with and forgive themselves. I honestly think most peoples criticisms of her are them projecting onto her and saying their own greviences with themselves. We all want to be better, we try to be better and help others be better, we all feel unseen or misunderstood, and like if we open up, we'll only be met with disappointment. And i think because of that, like you said in the video, people get uncomfortable with Diane as a character.

I'm not a huge fan of the show, and haven't really sat down to watch it fully. But I never understood the Jerry hate, it was really unnecessary from my understanding. And actually the thought that Rick and the rest of the family, with Morty as an exception are perhaps holding him back, did cross my mind

Thanks for this- great comparison. I saw "Before We Go" first and loved the format and the story. Later I watched the "Before" trilogy and enjoyed it too, and I saw the parallels right away. But I also noticed the differences you pointed out. I always explained it as "Before Sunrise" is about two people falling in love over one night discussing togather, and "Before We Go" is about two people working out a relationship with other people that made a big impact on their lives. Need to rewatch!

As I said many time before (on different comment sections), the major problem of the the film is the overdose of theme treated and thus hip bing is really 1 dimensional lecture on everything. Every plot line felt half baked and the resolution felt rushed. And while the feminism part ouf the movie is really blend, the patriarchy part also felt really poor in its depiction. The whole time I felt like the movie was insulting me BECAUSE I was a man: and I understand that’s how woman may feel in front of she hulk or madam Webb or other pop culture movies, but the difference is that over there, it’s bad writing (the writers focus on making a strong female protagonist instead of making a strong protagonist who happens to be a female) where as in the barbie movie it felt like the writer knew what they were doing. Also, even tho Alan was fun, him breaking the fourth wall didn’t lead anywhere? I agree so much with you’re video and I think we could dive so much more on the missed opportunity and the potential this movie had to be a classic movie. Finally I’d like to say that I think that the movie should’ve had a more open and nuanced message: instead of just talking about feminism, they could’ve shown that we all need (men and women) to break free from the dumb norms, like lifestyles/toxic feminism for woman that just creat nocive standards for girls; and patriarchy that also creates dumb standards for girls and boys. Also id would like to note that this movie is clearly not made for kids but for adults and that it’s sad that this movie is so un-nuanced because it kinda put a barrier for lil boys who might like barbie (that’s really dumb given that feminism is supposed to break down barriers between men and women). As you said, it’s a fun ride until you start going into the « heavy » plot

it just pisses me off that people expect her to be better than BoJack then she returns from Cordovia and not to drag him with her in pitiness because 1. she IS better than man who takes advantage of 17 yo 2. she has severe ptsd, she saw the death of the little child and just got out of the bloody war zone, give her a little break from handling BoJack's life for couple of months

That's one interpretation but I don't know how valid it is considering that 60% of lobotomy patients were women and it was considered legitimate mental health care up in until 1967. Keep in mind that women were institutionalized for not wanting to get married. I think that interpretation of Joseph Sugarman is very generous and kind but not inline with the history of women's mental health care or even his known behavior. This is a man who said that he will not learn how to deal with a woman's emotions and thought nothing of objectifying his secretary while married or calling his insecure daughter fat. There is nothing to indicate that he felt bad for having Honey lobotomized.

What i dont understand , why she was interested in Butterscotch if she was raised to hate and hide her emotions ? Id expect her to marry Corbin and not follow her heart and then be miserable with him regardless . Perhaps rebellion from her father ? Or couldnt help herself and was emotional like her mother ? As someone also taught to hate their emotions (schizoid traits) i wouldve picked Corbin right from the start.

The movie is well written. If it's not the type of relationship that people want, it's the type of idealistic friendship. The dream that both can become friends and then fall in love is a great dream. It's unrealistic but it's something people kind of want. It's what they each end up recognizing it in their lives. It's funny though a little manipulative. There are things in the story that are a bit forced. They push the audience from a particular plot point toward another. On the "O" scene, the big laugh from Rob Reiner's Mom "I'll have what she's had" is funny but a little bit of a cheap gag. It's almost a throwback to an old joke. Realistically Ryan behavior in the scene if it were real would likely get her kicked out of the diner, or result in someone calling the police on her for perceived inappropriate lewd behavior. Responses would vary depending on the city. Structurally the scene needs to be funny. It's enough to make some audiences uncomfortable if there wasn't a laugh. As a guy, I totally agree about men's behavior. Carrie Fisher was a very talented actress and writer. I think there have been two times I had female friends who felt comfortable about talking about their relationships with men around (because they trusted me, or I was considered only a friend, or worst case scenario they totally were ignoring me?) I can say when women talk about men and they are in a group it's quite different then when men talk about women. Having heard both it's a little disheartening. It helps that both characters are attractive. I always thought it was time that helped changed their minds. Ryan makes a comment that if they get together when they are old and alone that they should get together for a date. At that point it's clear she's open to the idea of a romance but isn't treating as a real possibility. While I think that's accurate about their "love" the conversations and active listening show a lot of care and concern for each other. I kind of feel that "You have mail" shares some of the same issues. Okay, the nursing home gag made me laugh out loud. I kind of feel their reactions in their fight after sleeping together felt accurate. Agreed. It is a movie about a (false) ideal. It's a very flawed and unrealistic ideal. I think some of the argument is out of a need to "test" the validity of their relationship. To make sure it's a real thing that can continue to exist no matter what happens. It is a very manipulative film that expertly moves it's audience. It ends on a sweet and unrealistic ideal. Technically almost every movie falls to that argument. I think it's an entertaining film.

joseph as a character is one that has haunted me for years in a way that very few other characters have. when you're looking at generational trauma and are going back 50, 60, 70 years, so much of the "seed point" as it were for the trauma that affects you so far down the line is absolutely untangleable from the time it took place in. divorce wasn't okay in the 50s, so your grandparents hated each other, so your dad is bitter and resentful as an adult. women's emotions were shamed, so you learned to never be vulnerable, so you were never able to support your horse son. it's why time's arrow and the old sugarman place are my absolute favorite episodes, and that includes tvfhd. society and time are so meshed with who we are and who we turn out to be and joseph, god knows he's flawed, but he does an amazing job of depicting that very bittersweet fact.

This is an awful apologetic take. He may not be literally threatening to lobotomize her-- since that didn't work out to his desired effect-- but he was definitely treating her as a female object and not a person. An annoying problem to be solved not a person to be loved. Oh, and he doesn't regret the lobotomy or miss Honey. He's just upset that it didn't work out like he wanted and he's not dealing with these annoying broads
