I saw Stan’s video too. He absolutely did not say to buy wheels over tracks. He stated the advantages and disadvantages of both. But you also missed the part where he said “If you can only buy one machine, buying a wheeled skid steer with OTT tracks might be the best option”. So you bought a wheeled machine to work construction sites and didn’t fill the tires with foam. First mistake. Then the rain comes and you honestly expected that your machine would float on mud. You were shocked when it didn’t. Then you sold your machine at a huge loss when all you needed to get some OTT tracks. $3,000 max and you could have had wheels when you need them, and tracks when you need them. Stan covered all this and you blame him.

As to wheels or tracks, it all depends on the application as sometimes wheels are better and sometimes tracks are better. If I didn't know, I would have rented both types of machines and done a comparison in both dry and wet conditions and over various types of work. I have a John Deere wheeled unit and it works very well for most of my work but rent a CTL when I need to. I have run into applications in sand where the sand just really chewed up an undercarriage (idlers/rollers) and wheels were the way to go. I also have many friends in the construction business with larger firms who have both CTL units and conventional wheeled units. For muddy conditions and better gradeability, tracks are had to beat. Also, don't know why you couldn't just take the tire off and run it to an equipment dealer or a tire dealer or have a spare tire. That's what we've always done. Also, the "no-air" tires are often the way to go in hard-service applications. I don't understand why you are using either a wheeled skid-steer or a compact track loader (CTL) to load out semi-dumps. I would have used either a larger wheel loader or a crawler loader to load out semi-dumps as you're paying by the hour for these trucks and unless it's a very long haul, standard 10-wheel dumps would be better. But again, don't know the haul distances. With either a CTL or a skid-steer, you don't have a loading unit properly matched to the semi-dump's size. I'm not going to knock many videos out there on RU-vid including DM's material because most people including him are putting out useful information. But everyone is handicapped by their own perspective of their own experience.

I have had the tracks on for 500 hrs and they are really really tough. I would never buy a wheel machine in my geographical location. This is one of those situations where use case determines what is best. On my farm I could use a CTL but it would be more expensive and use more fuel compared to my small articulated wheel loader. This machine has similar capabilities of the largest skid steers or CTLs but only needs a 60hp engine to run it and since a tire puncture is far less common I run air filled radial tires with 7500 hours on the machine the tires are still original.

I do tree/stump work, gravel road building and grading, demolition and snow removal and I personally like having tires with OTT rubber tracks. It’s definitely not perfect as you need to modify your bucket a bit if you run the OTT tracks most of the time - but it’s nice to have all the traction of tracks when you need it and just take the tracks off when you don’t need them. There are times I much prefer a turf tire to tracks when going across lawns or working on gravel. No doubt you can work sideways on steep grades much easier and safer with a track machine then a wheeled machine - however sometimes it’s good not to have the perfect machine as it make you learn new skills and how to do the same work but in a different way when you don’t have a track machine on jobs that a track unit would be much easier on. I have two machines, neither are new - a 2000 Gehl 5635 and a 2019 Case SR 250 - both are wheeled machines and both run rubber OTT tracks all Spring, Summer and Fall and just run tires in the winter for snow.

I agree 100% also if you are spreading loam for seeding and drive over it with wheeled machine it has way more psi on the contact of the loam that makes it very compacted and very hard to rake out, A track machine still compacts is some but not near as bad. If you are on soft or wet or sandy or any combination of the 3 ground.... Tracks are 10 times more grip thank wheeled machines. Hard rubber is out of the question for landscaping lawns etc... Great for paving like you said so you are stuck with air tires. I can't count how many hours lost and plans had to change over flat tires over the years in skidsteers I have had. Having said that the only tracked machines I have used were rentals, I have owned 7-8 wheeled skids.. Owned 1 mini track skid... Am buying my first tracked (not mini) skid steer tomorrow. I am excited.... Its a used machine but I do all my own repairs and maintenance I am good with used and big money savings. I like Stan... But I disagree on this, and also his video about dual ram dump trailers.... I prefer them to the other options and in testing have as much strength or more as the other options

This is a beginners view. Great advice from a beginner. I own both. Each one has its place. I only run large tires that never get flats. Buy spare wheel and tire. When you break a track at 1900 hours you'll be down 2 days minimum and spend 1800 for a track. We keep spare tracks in yard. Call cat ask them how much to install a set of new tracks. I had a set no flat tires there to expensive and burn rubber off to fast. If we are in dirt we send track machine, if on asphalt scooping base say grading sidewalks we use rubber tired machine. He's also not figuring cost of undercarriage, when you have to change rollers, sprockets, front idlers. Hang on to your ass when they want 18000 for all that. I've survived 40 years as an excavator, things aren't black and white in this business.

When the track pops off because it gets loose and there is a grease zert on top of the rollers that ride on the track, and you’re supposed to grease it everyday and that tightens the track up

I'm pretty sure Stan took that statement back a couple years ago because any loaders he's been getting have had tracks on them. I think his biggest issue with tracks in the past was dirt tracks not working when your plowing snow but since he's been using ASV's with their track design and swapping dirt tracks for snow tracks on his CAT he's been more of an advocate for track machines.
@ptrproducttestreview9593
@ptrproducttestreview9593 3 года назад
Um... I would not worry about the tracks breaking that's silly, but as for the idlers, rollers and drive motors that stuff gets expensive fast especially on concrete and other hard surfaces. Changing a tire is relatively cheap and can be done pretty quickly. Also you can put over the tire tacks over your tires if you really want to. Also Dirt Monkey owns both track and tire loaders for a reason they both have their strengths and weaknesses, tracks for dirt, mud and sand. Tires for being on concrete and asphalt.

cant beat tracks for demo or landscaping because they crawl over everything, don't go flat and don't tear up the ground near as bad. for like myself on the farm where we use the pallet forks more than anything the tires are a must for the smother ride, also have better traction on snow and ice. there are times we wished we had tracks, but there's also times we are thankful for the tires.

I am a site supervisor now but used to work for a large excavation company ( worked for a landscaper after and during high school). I shook my head when I seen the dirt monkey video you were mentioning. Yes rubber tired skid loader s are best on pavement. But if you are on dirt, especially loading trucks absolutely tracks. You wear tracks out and can plan accordingly unlike what happens with tires. The dirt monkey video you mentioned I think is older and if you notice he has went to almost exclusively tracks now.

They both have their benefits....I've been around equipment for 25+ years....wheel loaders Do Not tear up yards in turns,as you have much more control with a tire....now,if you're on un-sodded ground a track unit would be better...I've done hundreds of relocations,on palms and hardwoods and I can assure you that trying to make a turn on good grass with a track is going to destroy the property,as with a rubber tire,you can "walk" the unit into a turn....also,hate to say it,but Cats are one of the most NON user friendly units on the market,when it comes to repairs(Kubota 95s being worse).. Bobcats are ok,but don't have enough weight in the ass..try picking a Royal palm with 24ft of wood and they'll tip.....at the end of the day, there's many pros and cons and uses to each design....and FYI,the JD 318s and 320'a are de-tuned for the rental industry,for insurance purposes to prevent any accidents from operators that are unfamiliar with operating a skid unit.....try a JD 326 wheel unit or a JD 333 track unit and you'll see the difference in power and lifting capacity....plus,JD's are very owner/operator friendly units,when it comes to service and have a way better DPF/DEF system,vs many other units out there...trust me,I've ran and repaired basically every unit on the market...that being said,tires and tracks both have their pros and cons for the ground being ran on.....also,best unit ever made is the mid 2000's New Holland 185s High flow...(just my opinion)

There is a time and place for wheeled skid steer. If you are working pavement, hard surface will where your tracks faster. But seems like you are mostly in dirt tracks will be the best. Also nest time ask them to demo both machines and decide for your self. I did final grades with my 239D in all kinds of different materials from clay to sand. You can never go wrong with tracks even on hard surface. And he is right, those solid tires are garbage in the dirt. The other option you could have done was get a set of tire chains for mud. Still no substitute for tracks. Always demo machines. Your tracks should almost never pop off as long as you are keeping them tensioned right.

Most guys I know who have wheeled skid steers have a spare wheel that they bring with them. Also yoi have have a spare tube and a plug kit, these wheels only go 10kph (6mph) so many punctures can be fixed easily by a local tyre shop while the machine still works with the spare on

Wheels over tracks is better for 95% of the jobs I need to do. Wheeled machines compact the materials(dirt & gravel) better. Winter time snow plowing with 1 pairs of tire chains is unbeatable. Roadability way better especially with 2 speed travel. Cost far less maintenance wise to track machine. Can’t think of but a couple areas where tracks would be an advantage. Manufacturers make more $$ selling track machines due to more wear & tear replacement parts on the undercarriage, is why they push the track loaders.

I agree completely that the tracked machine is the way to go, it’s a complete no brainer, and if your worried about the cost of tracks all you need to do is figure out your cost to operate per hour. Cost plus 20% is what you charge. A word of advice, if you can’t get anything but a wheeled machine just make sure that your crew has a spare tire on the trucks, and the tools to change it out.
