Hey bud, can you hep? My cat attacked a blue tit, it young though, my cat had the poor fella in its mouth for 15 minutes andwas screaming, i managed to save the little guy hut hes been in shock n couldn't move for hours, thought its injured but it seems ok. Ive tried to feed it but no luck but it was just bits of bread n a breakfast bar not interested. Took some water. I took it outside but it didn't want to go and it was late so i didn't want to leave it outside with my 3 cats who come and go. So i put the little guynin a small drawer with some towels. Its wings seem ok but just wondered if i could send s photo to guess the age and how i should give this guy bk to nature

@@DamedGhostStory Thanks for your message and sorry to hear about this blue tit. I would recommend you give your local wildlife rehabilitation centre a call or get in touch with the RSPCA. There's more information here: www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/wildlife/birds/injured As they suggest you could try opening the ventilated box or in your case drawer, and taking the bird outside to see if it flies away by itself. Otherwise there could be internal injuries that you can't see. If it doesn't fly away I would definitely get in touch with RSPCA or a local wildlife centre.

I had this happen when a pair of great tits moved into a nesting box I put up. They had built a nest there the year before, but nothing further happened until they raised their first brood there this year. With the box being fastened to a wall of our house, we could hear the tapping from indoors. It continued for hours per day, for a week or so. As I didn't have a camera set up, I had no idea what was going on, so just assumed they were putting up bookshelves.

I've had blue tits in various boxes (with cameras) for quite a few year's now and I regularly hear this tapping just prior to them starting to bring materials in , I'm convinced there testing the integrity of the box , this year's brood are about to leave any day now

Hi Graham, thanks for your comment. Yes, its fascinating behaviour. Great to hear about your bird boxes and that you have cameras setup - its great to watch their stories unfold. Hope this year's brood are able to fledge 😃👍

Really interesting behaviour you caught here. I liked that you had footage from the outside as well as inside the box!

I think the tit likes the box but its too shallow. When you look at tit nesting videos they like to build up lot of nest material for the eggs. So maybe construct one where the camera is bit higher and has more space for the nest and the birds. 🤷‍♂

We had a box on the side of the porch, I kept hearing this tapping sound and eventually realised it was bluetits pecking at the entrance hole, unfortunately they never moved in. However as I type we have a brood in the back garden box chirping away as the parent(s) work hard to keep the chicks fed. Should be at least another week before they fledge.

Thanks for your comment. That's great you've had interest in both boxes. It sounds like they were investigating your first box. All the best for the chicks fledging - very exciting! 😃👍🐦

Very interesting video. Never seen that behaviour before so found it fascinating. I have been thinking of putting up a birdbox and camera setup, so will check out your videos on that.

The blue tits in my bird box often peck the wooden floor even after laying eggs. The nest they've built is just bare wood in the middle which seems a bit crazy as they've got plenty nesting material. Because it's just a flat bare floor, the eggs tend roll outwards. I sometimes wonder if they're trying to shape the floor so it's a little bit concave to make it easier for the eggs to roll into the middle. It does also seem like cleaning behaviour, or possibly pecking for insects.

Hi Daniel, thanks for your comment. That's really interesting. I also found a similar thing where there was bare wood in the middle of the nest. However, just before laying the eggs they lined that area with feathers which stopped the eggs from going anyway. Very interesting behaviour - thanks for sharing 😃👍

I have blue tits in my bird box as well and started noticing this weird pecking I couldn’t place in early May. I’ve had my box hanging there empty for three years so I didn’t connect the sounds to the blue tits but I noticed the “tenants” bringing mosquitos to the nest one week ago.
