Not quite, but close. You use it to measure bottom time, not amount of air left. That's what your gauges are for. It's about tracking buildup of nitrogen in your body so you don't need to make a decompression stop as you ascend. Non-commercial diving isn't supposed to include decompression stops.

This ^ Divers need to be aware of the interplay between depth and length of their dive. The deeper you go and the longer you stay there, the greater the chances of getting the bends and the longer your decompression rise to the surface to avoid said decompression sickness.

You beat me to it, take the like. I'd like to add that while free diving, that is holding your breath under water, surface time between dives is very important to clear nitrogen from the blood. I've generally heard to take your underwater time and double it for surface time. And never dive alone.

When I began diving in the mid ‘70’s my Capt. Willard was on my wrist. I’ve used many dive computers since, but always wear a watch for backup. This has come in handy when a computer died 90’ down.

Its really for decompression times to avoid decompression sickness, so you can both track bottom times as well as your sits for dive tables. Pressure gauges will read out the tank capacity of your gas mix, same with a dive computer, which at this point can do your tables for you making a dive watch obsolete unfortunately.

@wristopia4101 he said, "Commonly used to track the amount of time the breathing gas inside a scuba tank will last underwater..." so ffs it was wrong info after all! I'm a divemaster with 1000+ dives.... As you should know, it tracks the dive time so you can keep a close eye on the no decompression limits.

Totally obsolete. We never used the watch to keep track of air but rather the amount of non-decompression time we have left. As for the amount of air left in the tank, we use a pressure gauge for that. As for managing our bottom time we have been using diver computers for 40 years. Dive watches today have noting to do with diving. AND, I love dive watches uni or bi bezel it doesn't matter.

People in the comments getting upset because you said air in tank vs bottom time are missing the point. This isn't a video to discuss diving terms. It's a video specifically for non-divers. I am a woodworker, but I don't launch into the difference in woods when someone is trying to discuss something with a non woodworker. You may hear someone say they want an oak door and think it's a quality wood to use for a door. I'm not going to dive in (pun intended) to a in depth conversation about what type of oak, where it's from, and how was it dried and how all of those things are critical.
@DeepsGnome
@DeepsGnome 2 месяца назад
Yeah, but if someone assumed a door you made was made of oak, and you knew it was pine, you would mention it. It's not helpful for someone to say "oh well wood is wood" and as a wood worker, you know there are important different properties between those woods. The difference between an air tank and bottom time, or decompression time is pretty significant. Education on thing's that have life affecting outcomes could be important to some. It's fine if Teddy is wrong on something, no need to get offended by it.
@user-ju8fo1kq8w
@user-ju8fo1kq8w 2 месяца назад
@@DeepsGnome My point is that if it's relevant, then yes. Tell them. But there is not a single diver that is using this video to train them on how to use a watch underwater. It's literally the equivalent of someone sharing a bit of trivia in a group setting to a group of people that won't use the information for anything important. Save the "um, actually..." comments for Reddit.
@DeepsGnome
@DeepsGnome 2 месяца назад
@@user-ju8fo1kq8w the relevance is asking and answering what a driver's bezel was designed for. It's really simple. Giving an indication of air in your tank is just wrong, plain and simple. When someone is trying to explain the reason for something, it's pretty basic that the correct answer is what people are after, not the wrong information. If you wanna live some ignorant life of incorrect information, go be ignorant, but there is something really wrong with you that you have a problem with people being informed with correct information.
@thomasingram8713

I dont see many people being genuinely upset, rather just wanting to clarify. If its friendly and genuine I see no reason on wanting to share info on the actual functionality of the most popular style of watch in the world, after all Diving is becoming less and less common and dive watches are probably the most popular thing about the sport/hobby/career.

In the “modern” age, most likely no serious diver relies on a dive watch per se…. But back in the day, serious divers, divers that paved the way, relied on their watches as a real tool down under. Today, a dive watch is typically just a luxury accessory.

@SilverSpade92
@SilverSpade92 8 месяцев назад
There are bi-directional bezels. I have a Timex Q reissue that has one. It doesn’t have a ratcheting mechanism at all, it just slides along a lubricated track and is held in place by friction alone, a little less friction than I would have preferred. It only has 50m of water resistance, so it’s not suitable for diving anyway. Whether its appropriate to still it a dive watch is debatable. Still, the bezel has its uses, so I’m glad it still has the feature. I can use it to keep track of how much time has passed since a set point, useful if I have something in the oven or want to keep track of how long I worked. Likewise I can use it to visualise time zones. =)
@RobertKing-oq4fq
@RobertKing-oq4fq 8 месяцев назад
GMT watches go both ways, for tracking time zones. Tudor Pelagos bezel also goes both ways, but the intent is to time swimming underwater and navigate via dead reckoning with a compass. Vostok watches, along with some vintage dive watches, use a friction bezel, no clicking or racheting involved, so they go both ways as well.
