Why Do Dogs Play Fetch?

Every dog seems to love to play fetch, but why? Its a bit silly, isn't it?
One of the main reasons dogs like to play fetch dates back 15,000 years to the domestication of dogs. Dogs were domesticated for a number of reasons, one of which was their ability to 'fetch' the hunt back to their humans. Dogs which were good at this, were kept and bred.
Dogs also like to play fetch because they get the same 'runner's high' than humans do from exercising, and get a mood boost from sprinting after a stick or ball.
They also play fetch for the attention of their owners. Dogs love and crave the attention of their owners, and by playing fetch, they have their undivided attention (not to mention praise).
Finally, dogs play fetch because we train them to do so! Sure, they have a natural desire, and get a runner's high, but it is also one of the first tricks we teach dogs to do.

So in other words, you don't really know. Fetch is nothing like hunting thousands of years ago, and the idea that it is good exercise or a way to get attention really only begs the question why the dog would choose that particular activity, as these goals can be attained in many different ways.

Now explain with science why dogs like to play tug of war. Wolves fighting for bones to prove their worth to the pack?
