WHY DO FISH KEEPING NEEDS FILTRATION SYSTEM

For fish keepers like me, fish keeping can be both enjoyable and challenging. Challenges come in many forms, one is when fishes are not in good trim. I know how it feels to see them floating at the surface of the water, lifeless. To all fish keepers out there who are just starting the journey, do not be discouraged when this happens. Such instances can be prevented given the proper way of maintaining the environmental condition of your tank, pond or aquarium. Just as we all know, the healthier the environment, the greater chances they thrive and grow faster.

Good day Dexter from Arkansas in the United States! I have learned a lot from your videos and practical fish farming. I raise goldfish and Koi....as well as rabbits,ducks and quail. So as you can imagine all your videos come in handy for me. I live in the forest way back in the mountains. Don't have all the comforts that most people would assume are normal here. I have to do a lot of the same things that you do with your fish. We all rough it together here during the summer and most fish go into fish rooms for the winter as it snows sometimes many feet deep during the worst of winter. Keep up the good work and much prosperity for your family! Thank you

Great content ! We are in Canada 🇨🇦 Came across by searching for help with a pond. We bought a house that had a pond but we’re not told by the sellers that the pond contained 17 fish So now I needed to find how to make a filtration system fast to get rid of the “pea soup “ water . Thank for making such great content !!

Your bucket filters are very efficient at filtering the water. Not only are they a Sediment Chamber, but they also have lots of surface area for the beneficial bacteria to grow. When I have space for a full fish room I will also make these bucket filters :)

Using coral is good in the filter for the goldfish, guppies, and mollies but don't use it for pH sensitive fish. Coral is made of calcium carbonate and will increase the pH in the water. If you're raising low pH fish, use other porous materials. Nitrate isn't really beneficial for fish, it's just not as poisonous. Plants will eat up ammonia & nitrate.
@invain143
@invain143 5 лет назад
This is true about the corals.
@philashton7578
@philashton7578 5 лет назад
Yes, you are both right about coral, and it also raises water hardness. I am surprised Dexter didn't know that.He also said that nitrates are beneficial to fish. At high levels nitrates kill fish. Nitrates are only beneficial to plants and algae, which help reduce it in the water by using it, and some other chemicals in the water, as food.

This is wonderful! Beneficial bacteria is very important! Just a small reminder to people, Crushed coral and coral pieces, also shells will raise the PH of the water and buffer the PH around 8.4. Some fish do not like the PH this high, as an alternative, use Lava rock in the filter instead. It will not affect the PH in any way and will also grow beneficial bacteria very well! This video has very great ideas and advice, thank you Dexter!

Hey, Dexter. You could also mention that in the fish excrements are messenger substances you cant filter from the water. they reduce very bad from filtering and have a good reason in a natural habitat. if to many fishes reach to much size, the oxygen-level would be to low and amonia, nitrit, nitrat, phosphat would raise to sky. the only way to get rid of this messenger substances that work like hormones to keep the fishes small and the habitat in regulation is WATERCHANGE! you can filter as much as you want... plants will help, but it wont do it at all if so many fish come to such a small place. the best way to reduce bad bacteria in your system also is waterchange. waterchanges and salting for stressed fish keeps your fishes healthy and let them grow big. in japan the fishfarm got so much water from the hills, they dont have to filter that good. the big waterchanges they do (30-50% a day some farms) is their way to get them big.

Looking so smart in glasses! Really smart guy, obviously, but glasses lend an air of authority and education. I was so happy you didn't bother the filter bucket that was six months old. Also the coral stones, being mostly made from calcium carbonate, will buffer the water pH, combating acidity. In Florida I use crushed coral rock. Over time the stones settle as they actually dissolve while buffering the acid caused by decomposition of feces and food. Most live bearers and goldfish appreciate a less acid environment.

Love you Dexter but, Nitrate really isn't good for your fish it's just that it's a lot less bad than Ammonia & Nitrite. A couple of ways to really extend bucket life is 1. Get some poly floss ,"it's a lot cheaper to use poly pillow stuffing", It catches detritus and polishes water very easy to take it out as needed and replace. 2. Plant something like Pothos in your filter bucket they are excellent nitrate /nitrite eaters! 3. Sooner or later almost any canister filter will fail they just pick up too much material over the months and years ,"depending on stocking levels." Check your levels and when they start to climb you can replace some of the filter media with new just make sure that you retain some of the media to seed the new material. Then have a lower stock level until the bacteria can grow. Really though the addition of the polyfloss really does extend the life greatly and makes it a lot easier to remove fish waste.

Sir Dex is right, always avoid completely cleaning a tank as this will remove your beneficial backteria, but instead a partial water changes range 10% - 50% should performed once a week. Nitrates are not highly toxic to fish, that why we need to partial water change..

Instead of using corals use bioballs or ceramic rings instead, will cost you more but more effective in housing beneficial bacterias, corals increases the ph level of the water and some fish isnt compatible with high ph level

Nitrate is NOT “Good” for your fish and can be toxic in high levels as well. You need to tell people correctly that they need plants to remove the nitrates Once the bacteria has done it’s job- also, What about sludge and waste removal from the bucket? I see a Spicket at the bottom of the bucket so I know your thought of that and draining that sludge off and the water from the bucket out does not kill the bacteria as Long as you do not dry it out and connect it right back to the system.

Although it's much more tolerated than nitrite, nitrates are NOT beneficial for fish. High nitrate levels lead to fish poisoning. On the contrary, the reason why your fish are thriving is due to low nitrate levels. This is brought about by feeding fish the right amount of food, keeping waste to a minimum (decaying matter spikes nitrates), aeration and most important of all, water changes. - All of which you have mastered from 20 years of experience.
