Sonic Unleashed was originally going to be a true sequel to Adventure 2 (hence the name "Sonic World Adventure" in Japan), but knowing Sonic Team's previous game in the franchise (Sonic '06), the game's concept was changed. I guess the name change outside of Japan was so that people wouldn't think of it as an "Adventure 3".

Two of the strangest name changes are two of the Kirby remakes-Super Star was called “Kirby’s Fun Pak” in PAL regions, and Kirby’s Return to Dream Land was called “Kirby’s Adventure Wii” in PAL regions. However, their remakes use the American names in PAL regions, so I imagine some European players were very confused/annoyed (especially in the latter, since the PAL name is closer to the Japanese name, which is preserved in the remake, “Hoshi No Kabi Wii (Deluxe),” or “Kirby of the Stars Wii (Deluxe)”). So Kirby’s Fun Pak was remade as Super Star Ultra, and Kirby’s Adventure Wii became Return to Dream Land Deluxe.

*Fun Fact:* The name "EarthBound" comes from MOTHER 1's 1990 American Localizer Phil Sandhop as he was working in the unfortunately cancelled at the time US Localization of MOTHER 1. He knew Americans wouldn't buy a game with such a cheesy name of MOTHER so he randomly though up of the "EARTH BOUND" (the words spaced out.) After MOTHER 1's US Localization got cancelled last minute after it was already completed they reused the name of "EARTH BOUND" for MOTHER 2's US Localization. A funny thing to note that I doubt was actually intentional is that the word "earthbound" obvious meaning bound to earth or restricted to earth also has a second meaning. That 2nd meaning "attached or limited to material existence as distinct from a spiritual thing." something that if you ever played MOTHER 1 reminds players much about the character known as Queen Mary which I won't spoil her full on backstory, but is a character (trying to be vague here) is whose entire existence in the game is restricted to a spiritual world of some sort, meaning that Queen Mary a character who the game's plot revolves around is the literal definition of the word "earthbound."

One of the first things when I saw the title was the Yakuza/ Like a Dragon series. The numbers are all the same worldwide but the outside of Japan its known as Yakuza instead of Like a Dragon. And Like a Dragon 7 was known as Yakuza: Like a Dragon. And the western release of the fourth and 5th game also lacked the subtitle, with the 6th game's subtitle being slightly different (poetry of life in Japan, song of life in the west)

Link's Awakening Japanese name is not exactly a spoiler of the end, because the Owl talks about "waking the dreamer" since the beginning and we get to know the true nature of Koholinth's island and it's eventual fate at the Ancient Ruins. I particularly like when series try to reunite the different names in different regions... recent years seeing the release of both "Resident Evil 7: Biohazard" (released in Japan as "Biohazard 7: Resident Evil"), and also "Yakuza: Like a Dragon". Interestingly, this stuck for one but not the other... subsequent games have kept the "Like a Dragon" name, dropping "Yakuza", but "Biohazard Village" still got renamed to "Resident Evil Village". Also, whichever graphic designer managed to pull off the "hide a 7 in the logo" trick for both names of RE7 deserved to be paid way more than they probably were.

"Fire Emblem: Wind, Flower, Snow, Moon" title is derived from a Chinese poem and represents the change of scenery with the passage of time and the seasons that come and go with it, fitting the game's various time related mechanics and story. The localized title is "Fire Emblem: Three Houses", which with the DLC there's now 4 Houses. Not on the fortunate side of title changes I'd say.

And usually because of trademark reasons if that name was already taken or too similar in the west. Dragon Quest was called Dragon Warrior in North America until renamed in the 8th game. Other mentions include the Castlevania games are various names of Demon King Dracula and World of Mana games are Seiken Densetsu (Legend of the Holy Sword) in Japan.

The Capcom fighting game series "DarkStalkers" is actually called "Vampire" over in Japan, primarily because Demitri Maximoff was intended to be the main character in the series despite that role going to the likes of Morrigan Aensland, who is a succubus. If I'm gonna be honest, though, I definitely prefer the name change for series when it was released internationally, especially since all the other characters in the games are not vampires at all, which would make perfect sense if not everybody likes to play as Demitri and/or Morrigan.

1:32 Funny you should say that, as that's literally the exact thing that happened with the original King's Field trilogy on PS1. In amusing twist, the reasoning for the first not being localized is similar to Final Fantasy II and III, being that King's Field II released in Japan not long before the PS1 released in North America, so it was localized instead of the first one

Fire Emblem’s naming convention got weird for a bit when they first brought it to the states. Since it was the first game in the series in the west it was just called _Fire Emblem_ though in Japan it’s _Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade_ and was the 7th game in the series. You’d think the first game in Japan was called Fire Emblem but nope! It’s _Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light_ not to be confused for the remake, _Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon_

Salamander; the spinoff to Gradius, had its name changed to Life Force for the North American NES release. Salamander for arcade actually received a re-release called Life Force; which goes further with the visuals representing the official backstory of you being inside a gigantic space organism. Metroid Prime 2 Echoes is actually called Metroid Prime 2 Dark Echoes in Japan. Dark Echoes make sense considering Dark Samus and that there are objects that you can see in Light Aether but can only be interacted with in Dark Aether. Due to legal kerfuffle in Europe; Star Fox was called Starwing and Star Fox 64 was called Lylat Wars. Fire Emblem: The Goddess of Dawn became Radiant Dawn; which is fitting since the previous game was Path of Radiance (Path of the Blue Flame in Japan). Story of Seasons is in fact the Harvest Moon series in Japan (called Farm Story there). Due to licensing issues around 2010, Sega has to call the arcade re-release of Daytona USA as Sega Racing Classic (though the HD home console version was able to have the Daytona USA title). Dark Cloud 2 is Dark Chronicle in Europe and Japan.

(2:57) This claim about there being little known about the cancelled official FF2 NES US Localization is completely false. An prototype cartridge of Final Fantasy 2's NES Localization resurfaced to the public in the late 2000s and has to dumped on the internet for years now for anyone to play using an emulator (or reproduction cartridge on official NES hardware) to experience what could of been with the Final Fantasy series in America. There is also the website called the TCRF (The Cutting Room Floor) which dissects regional version differences as well as unused, planned, and cut content in video games which goes into the version difference between the Famicom version of FF2 and the cancelled NES version of FF2.

Japan: Xenoblade Europe: Chronicles Japan: Okay
@barleybap9528
@barleybap9528 Год назад
The funniest thing is that it wasn't even going to be Xenoblade. Tetsuya Takahashi first called it Monado: Beginning of the World, likely to draw a line in the sand and move on from Xenosaga, which failed commercially, caused a big fallout at the company, and saw him removed as director from the second game onwards. Nintendo of Japan then requested the name be changed to Xenoblade to pay tribute and draw a clearer tie to Takahashi's previous work than was ever intended. And then Nintendo of Europe decided to change it *back* to something that was less of a clear tie to Gears and Saga, just like Takahashi wanted to begin with. Dude must be so confused.
@xenogen372
@xenogen372 Год назад
@@barleybap9528 I'd say the name change made Takahashi make Xenoblade more in line with Gears and Saga. You can see it especially around the end of Xenoblade 2. 3 kinda ditches the heavy Xenosaga sci-fi but the callbacks and links are still there. N being pretty reminiscent of Grahf from Xenogears.
@barleybap9528
@barleybap9528 Год назад
@@xenogen372 Yeah, definitely agree. The name was a last minute change of title with Xenoblade 1, but I think you see progressively more of that Xeno DNA slipping in as the series goes on. Saw so much of both Gears and Saga in XB3 when I played recently.

I'm pretty sure FF5 was skipped because after FF4 got low sales in the USA, Square thought, "ok, maybe these games are too complicated for these dumb Americans" and they decided to make an entry-level RPG for the Western market, which was Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest instead of bringing over FF5. When that also flopped, they went back to just releasing the main series, but by that time, FF6 was the newer, shinier, seeminly more appealing game.

I like Earthbound as a name and don't think it's a bad choice, but I really don't think that Mother is as weird a title for English-speaking audiences as you suggest here, and heavily disagree that it's just gratuitous English for the sake of it. I think it's very likely a reference to the English phrase Mother Earth (the title theme to the first game even has that title IIRC), which is a thoughtful and meaningful choice of title that fits with the themes of the series, even to a native English speaker's ear. In fact, I'd argue that it perhaps carries more meaning in the context of the series than "Earthbound" does. Again, don't think it's a bad change necessarily, and Earthbound has a nice ring to it, but I don't really agree that it was strictly necessary to change it.

It’s 100% a reference to the John Lennon song, do you even know how that is..?
@barleybap9528
@barleybap9528 Год назад
@@fshoaps No it's not. Itoi has mentioned the Lennon song as being one of the many reasons he settled on the title, but it was more than just that. In a 1996 interview about Mother 3 he had this to say regarding the title: 今のゲームって非常に父性的なんですよ。父親の罠を息子が攻略していくみたいなね。だから母性的な匂いのするものを作りたかったんです。例えば、最初に円盤が出てくるけど、それはマザーシップだし、お母さんも出てくる。そんな母性(マザー)的な要素を入れたかった。それに僕たちって母親が作った人間なんです。父親が作った人間ってすごく少ないと思いますよ。 Here's a quick translation: "There's a real fatherlike quality to modern games, you know. When a player plays them, they become like a son trying to solve the wily puzzles set to them by their father. So I wanted to make a game that instead had strong ties to motherhood. For example, the disc that appears at the start is called the Mother Ship, and your mother appears as a character in the game. I wanted to pack the game with elements like that that evoke motherhood. Plus, it's our mothers who make us who we are. I think there are very few people in the world who were made into the people they are by their fathers." The John Lennon song is one factor in the choice of name, but it's absolutely not just a simple throwaway reference to a song title. If you're going to be rude to people, try to at least make sure you're correct.
@barleybap9528
@barleybap9528 Год назад
He also didn't mention the Lennon song at all in his response in that interview, for what it's worth. So I think you're grossly overstating how much of an influence that was.

@barleybap9528
@barleybap9528 Год назад
@@fshoaps I mean it's certainly one thing Itoi has mentioned, and like you say, the game has a lot of western music references, with the Beatles a particular favourite. But you said that it was 100% a reference, and it's demonstrably not based on Itoi's own words. Heck, I'd argue it probably wasn't even the main influence given that Itoi's quote that I cited above, the most commonly cited origin of the title among Japanese players, makes absolutely no mention of Lennon's song. But that's neither here nor there, and I'm not disputing that Lennon's song was one factor. I just take issue with you suggesting that the title is no more than a simple throwaway song reference, and implying rather rudely that I'm some kind of idiot for believing otherwise.

One case I recall that they drop out its localized title is Shin Megami Tensei. Originally, it was localized as "Revelations" in the first Persona and Last Bible games, but it isn't a title that really fits at all with the series. Shin Megami Tensei literally means "True Reincarnation of the Goddess", which is a really cool name and depicts the fact that the protagonists can summon mythological creatures. But for some reason, they kept the name in Japanese since Nocturne release... that at the same time is the localized name for Shin Megami Tensei III because the first two wasn't localized.

8:47 I constantly see RU-vidrs throwing these snarky quips around, and I genuinely fail to understand this logic. Just because the game came out 30 years ago, do you seriously expect everyone in the world to have already played it ? Because a game has been around for longer, does that take away its value in any way and our entitlement to enjoy its story fully blind ? At least you put in a spoiler alert, but why even do that if you didn’t even care enough to give me a time stamp to skip towards to, so I ended up being spoiled anyways ? I mean yeah sure, it was about a cliche trope - but how would I know that ? Does that mean I cared less about not knowing it ? Congratulations, you just turned off a new viewer - which is a shame, because I genuinely enjoyed the rest of the video.

It's basically the "I am your father" of video game twists-you know it whether you've played the game or not. I've heard the game barely tries to keep the secret anyway, to the point where some refuse to even call it a twist.
