I’m not a goldfish keeper, but it’s always good to learn new things about fish. Thank you so much for all you do to help us keep our fish healthy, Dr. Loh.
Stress may cause a change in color. Some time ago my son caught a wild carp/goldfish and put this stocky 12" plus fish which was completely gold in my pond. He did not like his surroundings and turned totally black laying next to a bottom filter in the black pond. I wanted to see more activity in the pond and purchased a dozen feeder goldfish and placed them in the pond. That made this large fish feel much more comfortable and he started coming off the bottom and then changed back to his orange/gold color.
Thank you very much I thought my goldfish was sick but none of the other others have white stripe and the lip area is white I don't see any white speckling so I don't think it's ick
Thank you fish doctor 👨🏽⚕️🙏🏼God blesss beautiful video. But I just noticed one of my yellow common comet goldfish with a black around her tail I hope that’s normal right? And the big one her tails around her getting light whitening I hope that’s Normal too right? And two of the yellow common comet goldfish’s last night pooped brown colours I hope that’s normal right?
my daughter had a goldfish she got at a carnival as a prize and she grew to 3-4 inches inside in a tank then decided to put in in our pond after a while in pond we noticed it was losing orange and slowly became completely white with just a slight orange tinge. the pond is pretty well shaded but some sun gets through the koi are all colorful just the goldfish is white.
While it's obvious to us fishkeepers, it might be worth briefly mentioning that you have moved the goldfish from their pond to these tanks for temporary observation. Some people will see the goldfish in there and think that is ok for long term housing. I know it seems silly that people would think that but some people do put goldfish in bowls even though bowls are known to be bad for fish.
DepravedTaka good point. I saved a fish from a typical fishbowl aquarium. the guy who got it from his girlfriend had no idea that this wasnt ok. But then again, in comics, ads, film and such I always see goldfishes in bowls. Its important to educate people.
This is very interesting... I had no idea that their color came from chromatophores... so do all colored fish have chromatophores??? .and do the fish food flakes really help brighten their colors ???
Thanks Doc. My baby shubunkins were mostly black when born and still haven't changed after 5 years. Indoor pond. Will they ever now? Also I have a 32cm white comet that can't eat, she tries but the food just blows back out, she's about 15 years old, I can't see anything stuck in her throat, I've isolated her from the pond. Can bacteria or worms actually stop her from eating? She also stayed in the most aerated part of the pond like she has trouble breathing and seems quite happy in the small tank with the aerator on full. Suggestions please? She's usually a bulldozer in the pond but still my favourite girl.
Dear Dr Lowe, thanks for videos so informative. My relatively large yellow goldfish has become almost entirely black over a short period? It seems late/strange for a colour change and I doubt it is ammonia burn (didnt notice a spike and its quite homogeneous). Could it be a parasite? Yet these are not small black points but large, almost continuous area (e.g. the dorsal fin is completely black). Have you ever come such cases? Happy to send a picture. Thanks!
Hello Doctor Richmond , I have a quick question about my goldfish. He is the exact color of the goldfish on your video with the black fins. But I’ve noticed in the last 2 days that the black on his fins has been fading lighter. I had a white goldfish passed away 3 days ago. Not sure if it has anything to do with my fish fins turning white. Just wanted to know if there’s any idea why they’re fading? And he is not as active as he was when he was with my other fish.
Hi dr. My four fish is also losing black color it looks same like ur fish but double tail and much faty & big. But i dont know what to do water quality is good. 30 % -50% water is changed daily established cycled tank with one plant, its a 1300lt tank. Plz suggest what to do to recover my fishes black colour.
Our comet goldfish are in an outdoor pond which is partially shaded in the afternoon. Some of the fish are turning white. They all seem healthy and vigorous and growing. A few months ago we swapped to an 'economy' food (last summer the fish did a lot of breeding and numbers expanded from 14 to about 40). Could it be that the economy fish food doesn't contain carotenoids? Should we go back to the premium food?
My goldfish has dark spots on the top of its head where the orange part is… It’s body is mostly white with an orange patch on the top. And part of the orange patch is turning black. Has a bit of black on its fin. And the joint between the tail in the body. However. This darkness is lightened during the day and then changes back dark overnight. How can I change colour daily? From light to dark? Also, I can’t tell what’s causing it. I’ve tested my ammonia 1,000,000 times. And it’s zero. There is barely, nothing in the tank for it to injury itself. It’s still swimming and it’s still eating. The aquarium shop said that it’s either stress or its natural. That was their guess
It's the Black & White Panda Moors that most people fall for, without realising that as they get older and bigger, most of them don't stay Black & White at all and can change their appearance quite a lot compared to how they first started out
Hello quick question, my oscar is not eating, been a few weeks. Still swimming but does not find the interest in eating and I put feeders but nothing happens. Usually the oscar would've eaten them all. I rarely feed live fish so I thought that would do the trick. I dont want to lose this fish. Can u help?
Carol I have a fantale that is turning black is that normal? I don't know if it sick or just turning . I had the fantale for 3 years now. I take my fish out of the pond in the winter and now the goldfish is turning color or is sick. I don't know what to do.
My gold fish is changing color... From orange to white. I'm worried. She is not littering around the tank anymore. She went to a corner and now usually stays there only. Is there anything to worry about?
Hey Doc, I'm having an issue with my fish that I hope to pick your brain about. I have 6 sub adult geophagus in one of my 250 gallon tanks. They've been with me for about 2 months, and the tank has been well established, stable and healthy for over 8 years. 4 days ago 2 of them, both males, suddenly developed a wierd form of what I can only describe as partial paralysis. They swim with only their pectoral fins and they seem to be unable to move any part of their bodies from the stomach back to the tail. They otherwise seem perfectly fine, eating well, bickering with the other 4 Geos and moving about the tank. Both of them do seem to have a very slight tendency to float upwards tail first but it is only very slight. I initially thought of a swim bladder issue but there is no bloating, no problems keeping upright, no balance issues, no clamped fins, no sores, no signs of any disease, just the near complete paralysis of the body and tail from the stomach backwards. This is extremely apparent as they go about their business as usual, it is very obvious they can't/aren't using/moving their tails at all, just flapping their pec fins to get about with their limp tails trailing along at a very slight upward angle. I feed a mix of high protein pellets and vege pellets daily, at about a 1:1 ratio. I have 10 young adult discus, 3 adult scalare angels, 60 black neons, 20 peppered cories and 5 8-12inch pseudacanthicus in their with them, everyone else is perfectly fine. Any thoughts or suggestions as to what I could be dealing with here? Any info at this point will help, I have never encountered this is my 10+yrs of fishkeeping and it has me stumped. Thanks Doc!
What do you think of the many species of aquarium snails sold? Are any carriers? I'm seeing many new types collected from habitat (Rabbit snails is a new one on me,and some 4" yellow footed snail from Thailand) and I have my doubts how safe they are.
I'm not to sure if I'll get a reply. I have a neon tetra that has a white/yellow pouch/bulge that is coming out. After a while little particles come out then the pouch/growth eventually retracts. Is this the tetra giving birth or is this something else? The tetra eats and swims around like normal.
My goldfish has turned a brownish color his whole body. It started out as patches and now it’s hoss whole body. I can’t get any vets in my hometown here to look at him. Any advice? His yank ammonia levels are good and I checked all other water issues and they are fine?
Can you do a video on very small fish? I have a nano aquarium with Boraras Brigattae (and shrimp) and I have no idea if the fish are okay. They have trouble eating the already small food I give them and sometimes I don't know if they have eaten at all. I would like to know if there are visible signs that my small fish are underfed/hungry. Thanks :)
I know this is off topic, but my Platy has developed a bent back and her color is really washed out. The resources in my area are telling me it is fish tuberculosis . None of the vets in my area deal with fish and have no idea on how to treat this. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
Need some advice/help. I have an anchor worm problem and I've tried microbe-lift lice & anchor worm for pond fish, ich-x, cyropro, melafix, prazipro, api super ick cure, jungle clear water, and aquarium salt and none of it seems to do anything to get rid of the anchor worm problem. I've tried to stop pulling the fish out and plucking the worms because it's so stressful on them. I also lost 2 kinda like bleeding heart tetras, but my rainbows luckily I was able to keep alive. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I also have 2 weather dojos in the 55 gallon tank with them who rarely show they get a worm. Mostly the worms have been attacking my rainbows and rams. All in the same tank.
I have a 10 year old goldfish that has been orange ever since I got him at an inch long. Just over 8 months ago he started turning white. At first it started around his chin and belly and has moved up his sides. At this point he is half white and half orange. I asked my dad if this was normal for a fish his age and he couldn't give me an answer. Other than the color change, nothing has been different in his environment. He is one of 3 goldfish in a 55 gallon tank, the largest and oldest is 15 years and the youngest and smallest is approximately 5 years old. The other 2 are the same as they have always been, swimming around and active. I know you said it was normal for them to change colors in their later years, but after 10 years in the same tank and same healthy environment?
Hi, I have a lionchu ( lion head goldfish) was gold and white face, had one side of the eye orange eyebrow and one side white eyebrow, bow I see it has black coming on eyebrow and black on the tail while before it was white, black spots coming on the body as well, what could this ?
Is an ombré coloured coat rare on a goldfish? I saw one so beautiful it started from dark orange on the head gradually getting lighter into white, it was the only one amongst all the spotted and random coloured one. I wish I had bought him!
I have a 5” Black Moor that now has the racer Black strip going down his orange gold body. The black is getting less and less. He has lost a few scales from a scrape and now those 2 scales have grown back but they are solid white against gold. Is that an indication the fish has a White Base behind the gold and the gold will also start to change off the fish? Or is this a water quality issue why some goldfish start to lose their colors and gold. My PH is 8.4 and sometimes 8.8 .. it’s a battle trying to keep it down to at least PH 8. Really the goldfish hate PH that high. I see their behavior changes when PH is 8 verses 8.4 or 8.8 they get lethargic in higher PH. I am looking into an RO/DI Filter just to control PH and hardness. I am just wondering if the high ph has something to do with their color changing also?
It's uncertain what triggers the colour change. Check the pH of your source water. If it is lower than your aquarium's, it may be that there's something in your aquarium that's raising its pH (e.g. substrate, rocks).
About color change, it won't happen onto a bronze fish because when I had two shubunkins, they spawned and made an offspring full of its parents. I had to gave up 2/3 of the batch because it was a lot of them, and my parents are being jealous of the babies since I nurtured them(the mom and dad Shubunkin we're thrashing up and down when I'm here). I noticed all of the fish was olive green, then another month, the goldfish with metallic scales are still olive green, and in a year, they're bronze/wild color. When I went to a site called the Goldfish Forum, the article talks about the genetics of brown/wild colored goldfish will stay for such a long time! I have been working for bronze fish since then.
Here's the reason why calico nacreous shubunkins make different scale types. They are heterogeneous and the entire batch won't be all nacreous. 1/3 is matte, 2/3 is metallic and 1/3 is nacreous.
The brown/bronze is their wild-type colouration. They've been selected for these other colours over centuries. It's quite helpful that the young fish start off with the wild-type colour, to allow for better camouflage with their surroundings, to avoid predation.
My goldfish is turning black. It is random spotting. I do feed him food that is meant to enhance color. The black spots are mostly on his fins. But he's got some black spots like on his head, and some on the side. They aren't lumpy or anything. All the other fish are fine, he seems fine. Eating and swimming fine. I'm nervous cause I don't know what to do.
I had a very small orange coloured fantail goldfish named Romeo, he'd always been acting very lively like a fish should. But then I noticed he always hid behind the aquarium decorations and stayed in the same spot pretty much all day. So I put him apart into another tank, then he started having black scales, around his gills and stomach. He died soon after and I still don't know what it was 🙁
Hello Doctor i have 2 goldfish one orange and one silver with orange spots the one with silver and orange spots has turned completely white within 3 days i dont know whats wrong i am so worried!! Please help me i cant let anything happen to him
hi doc. the formalin you use to treat ich. is it normal formalin used in hospitals? i am a pharmacist in a hospital. want to know if its the same stuff. fish just picked up ich
The formalin used to treat fish contains 37-40% formaldehyde (like the ones used by the sheep, pigs and poultry industry). The product used to preserve specimens contains only 3.7-4.0% formaldehyde and contains phosphate buffers; the latter will contribute to build-up of phosphates, which can lead to unwanted algal growth.
hey doc, how are you? i just wanna ask if does goldfish fins can grow again? my black moor has been bullied and common gold fish nip its fins. pls help
I've seen black, bronze, orange, yellow, white and everything between, but not seen silver. Please email me a picture of your pet to thefishvet@gmail.com
My niece went away for a week or so on holiday and when she came back she asked me had I killed her fish and replaced it. I hadn't and would have told her if I had and was confused. What happened was in that short time, her fish had began to change colour and so look a bit different. I see this in our pond also. We had a huge shubunkin and she started off the usual mix of colours and is now almost entirely black (and HUGE with a big fancy tail). A smaller shubunkin is following the same trend too. One of our other fish has gone from white and orange to almost entirely white also. It is so interesting to see the way their colouring alters.
@@jmcjmc2007 No. I never change anything for other peoples fish. Same food, same feeding schedule, same maintenance. I think it literally just matured as it was a fairly young fish. It continued to change colour for a while longer also.
Ok I need some help desperte my fish is bent and he struggles alot to move he can barely move but he is still breathing he is struggling alot and his eye has turned white for the past month and we dont know what's wrong plz someone help or advise ASAP it would be really helpful thx 🙏
I need help!!! I think my red fish is sick!! He may die :( he has a light black stain in one of the fins behind. It's not the slit of skin tone but it's like nuanced in comparison. I had a fish who had the same stain in the upper fin, than that stain left a hole in the fin, few days later the fish slowly died :( How can I cure him? Please help.
@0:03 ..I have the somewhat exact type of goldfish like that(the one that has like Black lines on top of his body)..does anyone know what type of name of fish they are called??
SIR PLEASE ANSWER MY FANCY GOLDFISH HAS GOT SOME BLACK COLOUR AT THE TIP OF ITS FIN IS IT DANGEROUS OR NO NEED TO WORRY(its more than one year old sir)
I've never heard of supersaturation of oxygen before, surely as long as you're getting the water from a normal source (and not some super enhanced laboratory water) it shouldn't have too much oxygen. Dropsy is usually caused by organ failure due to poor water quality (not enough water changes) since most people don't change their water enough.
i got 5 betta fish at around the same time but they all died a few weeks later, it seems like they got fungus that would not go away. ive had betta fish before that did fine for a few years.i got a new betta and he seems to be doing good.
I kept them apart, I think they were sick when I got them, I got them from Walmart and petsmart. The new one I got from a small pet store wear they weren't kept in little cups.
Dr. I have two Oscar Fish they fight together too much and havig bacteria too ; i have put glass in the middle but no change in their behaviour what can i do for them😊 Pls reply
Oscars have unique personalities. You may have to resort to single fish aquariums, or trade them in at your local fish store, for non-aggressive individuals.
Attila Junior yea they do, what? I’ve put mine through tons of accidental temperature fluctuations, had one trap itself behind a rock for two days and lose half the scales and fins on its body and pulled through just fine, ich, survived the cycling of my tank. Some are less hardy than others likely but the majority of livebearers are quite robust fish. You may have just had bad luck
Vegetable dishes Dean Ripa do you know what to do can you respond to me later by is my business is with my goldfish's I was going to die I need help bye
