I was born in Miyagi prefecture, but not Sendai city. However I happy to hear your comments about Sendai city. Most people who are interested in Japan are tend to choose to a famous and big city like Tokyo or Osaka to live, but I would like to let them know advantages of living Miyagi as a person from abroad. I was born in Canada and have never been to Japan but I do want to visit Japan someday, I’d love to visit Miyagi and Tokyo or Sendai but since that earthquake that struck in 2011, I didn’t get a chance to go
I love Sendai. I would love to live there or somewhere else in miyagi if I could. I feel the over locked areas have so much to offer then the big main city’s.

True, I live in Sendai too and I think the city needs more attention from the government to increase tourism and also for the upcoming olympics sometimes its very lonely out here.

I was looking at climate info for various regions in Japan, and honestly, I'd probably make the same choice you did. Sendai's temperature graph on Weatherspark looks very similar to southern Connecticut, where I live. I don't think I'd be able to stand living anywhere south of Sendai. I despise hot, humid weather, and while it looks like Sendai gets pretty muggy in the summer, the warm summer temperatures don't look like they last for as long as they do in the northeast US. I don't know; I might also choose Sapporo or somewhere else in Hokkaido if I was forced to choose one place to live in Japan. The winter would be tough, but I bet I could deal with it. It would be a sacrifice made so I wouldn't have to deal with the summer heat. Sendai looks like a pretty cool place. Do you have any walking videos in the city? I know there's one guy in Sapporo who does walking videos with just the ambient city sounds. I like them. They give you a sense of what it's like to be there, without someone playing tour guide with commentary throughout the whole video.
I have a few video from Sendai, I reccomend the one called Sendai's Christmas Eve party! I walk to streets on Christmas Eve. I enjoyed the weather in Sendai a lot. Quite comfortable year round I think. Though the humidity still is killer in August, but for only a few weeks.
I am from the UK and have been using JFZ Book 1 for 3 weeks now, currently on Lesson 7. (I know I am slow, but I guess we all have our own pace) Next week I will be buying Book 2 to continue my 日本語 journey. Surprisingly I have noticed I'm now able to recognise and write most hiragna characters, but I am still shy about speaking it, even with my attempts with the bathroom mirror. What about people there? You said a lot about your preferences but what is making it so different as an atmosphere? We all know Tokyo, it's big, shiny, crowded. What are people in Sendai? Also more specific places, things?
The people are of course SO kind, even more than in Tokyo! At Sendai events people were way more willing to talk to you than in other big cities I think. I made more friends in Sendai than I have in Tokyo, though a lot of that is due to the pandemic sadly. I still keep in contact with many Sendai friends asking to meet up, and they are just so hospitable and happy about people living in Miyagi. If you are still curious, I recommend going there and hitting up some local events (I went to Sendai comiket many times) and festivals. Sendai can get crowded but no where near the Tokyo crowds, I often get very tired of Tokyo and purposefully don't go there for months at a time, where as when I lived in Miyagi (I live in Ibaraki now), I went to Sendai as much as I could cause I knew I could always have a good time and find places to sit and eat (unlike Tokyo). Sendai has basically all the same shopping as Tokyo besides some exclusive pop-up shop type things, but nothing at all that I think is worth living in Tokyo over Sendai. If you need recommendations for places to go in Sendai, I can't recommend Matsushima enough! Just look up pictures of it's beauty and I think you'll really want to go there. Sendai Sun Mall is where I could do most of my shopping when I went downtown, I'd say it's one of the staples of the city.

I'm from Turkey, I have no plan to move to Japan but I was messing around on Google Maps and saw Sendai and I was curious about it because I've never heard of it. Turns out it's pretty cool! I myself prefer big cities where I can get lost in (like Istanbul where I've lived my whole life, over 15M people live in the metropolitan area), but if you like living there, good for you :3
Don’t live in Sendai. It’s just very lonely out there and the people here are shy and conservative to foreigners. Live somewhere south. Osaka is the best option.

Hey, thanks so much for the information. I'm not sure if you're still replying to comments, but I'll ask anyway xD Right now I'm on the fence between choosing to studying abroad in Kyoto or Sendai, and although I've visited Kyoto once and it is beautiful, do you think I could experience a good amount of cultural activities in Sendai? I also used to live in Okinawa for about a year and like you mentioned it's ALWAYS summer haha. That's also why I'm interested in the more northern regions of Japan.
I one time I went to Kyoto I hated the crowds personally. I'm sure living on the outskirts of Kyoto is nice, but it's probably one of the most touristy heavy areas of Japan. You won't see this as badly in Sendai. I prefer Sendai due to the cooler weather, possible snow, and less crowded and touristy. But everyone is different, and whichever you pick I think will be wonderful
