I love what you said about doing something hard. I was so nervous going into the open, thinking even the scaled option of 20lbs was too heavy. Literally seconds before starting 24.1 I told my judge, “I can do hard things.” And I did it. I finished in the time cap (12:36) and I was so proud of myself.
oh zack i think this is exactly what we need on social media. thx so much for doing hard shit and being honest. i love your content it brings true value. i think u are the coolest, most rad dude out there because u are yourself. i freaking love that and i hope to meet u one day💖💖💖
I'm the guy that asked this morning on IG if you were doing the open. Opened youtube and saw this video. Good job man! Even finishing under the time cap, especially with no CrossFit at all, is really good.
Loved the warmup. You showed a lot of heart in not stopping. Likely there will be rowing or wall balls or bike - something you tall guys like in one of the Open workouts. 5'10" 170 lbs 57 year old and my time was 10:44 on 24.1. Of course, over 55 gets the 35lb DB, so that certainly helps, but I found the burpees to be the hurdle in this workout. I enjoy your channel and appreciate the content.
Damn. Good job man. I’m 5’9” 43 years old and 240lbs. Weights in CF have never been an issue for me. Burpees are my nemesis. Just saying the word spikes my heart rate, 😂. I was 5 reps under by the time cap, but I was better at burpees this year than last year. That’s all that really counts!!!
The fact that you deal with feelings of inadequacy or disappointment after all you have accomplished - it's sad but comforting because I feel like that all the time... im always thinking about how i could be further or doing more. good on you challenging yourself even under prepared. inspiring as always.
lol that shouting in anguish was so relatable at the end of the workout. I did the same thing when I finished 24.1. So painful but so satisfying. Nice work!
The high five into fist bump almost being missed was so relatable. As a jiu jitsu guy but also CrossFit coach, the amount of high fives I get and then I’m left hanging on the fist bump is unreal.
Let's go Tellie!! As a fellow giraffe (6'3) I think I had almost the exact same internal monologue doing this 😅 This is my first ever Open, and I told myself the whole way through the build up to my attempt that I'd do it scaled. My boys were like naaahh you got Rx. No, no shot, I said. I warmed up and... ohhhhh noooooo... I can do this (Rx), I'm gonna suffer like crazy but I can do this. I got 12:09 and my first tears of joy and pride in years. You've been an inspo to me for over a year now and watching you push through, knowing exactly what it took, mad props man, hope you're a happy mushroom for that Love from London, Zack
Great Video Zack, I’m 6 foot 4” but my arm span is 6 foot 9” really struggle with my Olympic lifting which is unfortunate as I really enjoy it. Would love to get some height specific coaching tip of you! Keep up the great work, your a fantastic role model. I hit the time cap on 24.1 😢 so well done for completing it 🙌🏼
For what it’s worth you are one of my favourite influencers … social media particularly Instagram feeds my insecurities and anxiety. I have learnt so much from you in the way of attitude and lifting … please don’t stop what your doing 🙌
That’s all mental fortitude right there! CF hurts but hurts much more when you don’t do it for a while so I’m proud of you for sticking with it! You did great! I train all the time and almost quit while doing the set of 15’s lol
Love seeing you participate in the open! It makes the picture more holistic for us. We see how strong you are and the folks you're next to and we can assume we're behind as well. It shows you get good at the things you workout and the folks on the Internet are real people too.
Brother you are not alone! We got our own rythim in life just like we all have a different pace and times in a workout! I feel the same by not being capped and finished at 14:31, i'm happy i finished and im happy i didn't just quit the workout! Congrats on getting out there and do the hard thing 🔥
THIS !!!!!!! You are great just the way you are !! Honesty and authenticity are so underrated in the socialmedia world. Love the content and HELL YEAH that was a STRONG FINISH ! Love from germany 🙂
Hi Zach, i felt the same way. My tranjnf haa been focused on the oly lifts and im currently in the middle of Clarence0's oly program. I Did 24.1 today. I didnt make cap. I rested twice. Bur i did it!
6'1 230 - finished 11:07. This workout is brutal bc it's so simple. If you're big and strong you benefit in that you don't have to take 15-30sec breaks on the snatch. All burpee pace and HR management. Some really cardio fit guys at my gym struggled on snatch and it killed their burpees. Their burpee pace
Good stuff man. I would say 90% of the workouts I do I get into my own head and get anxiety that tells me that I cant do it. The open always crushes me and in a group like that gets me to show myself that I can do hard stuff.
My eldest child finished in 8:05. I capped out right at the end of the round of 15. My wife tested it twice and she improved by a bunch of reps on the second. I think you have to do it twice to see what your actual pace should be.
brother super relatable. anytime i show up for a crossfit workout my goal is to do my best and if i DONT timecap i am STOKED. like can you believe i didn’t time cap!!!! 85 year old men will be beating me but im ecstatic with my performance
Your cool man, did my first Rx open workout Friday too! Back in pieces but still smiling. Watching you do this is so much more appealing than watching a pro hit 6 mins! Looking forward to 24.2 (heavy deadlift, ttb & box jumps I recon!)
No idea how that workout works, but it looked fun 😅 I just want to say, regarding the way you feel about social media, that I experience that every day myself. But I'm not in social media profesionally, I can only imagine what it's like for you. I always tell myself to 'Just improve' 💪🏼👊
This workout was really just death by burpees with some snatches thrown in for good measure. Had to use the scaled dumbbell thanks to bilateral golfers elbow from holding my Toddler. But finished in 11:18 and didn’t puke!😂
It’s good to watch people who have a RU-vid presence but aren’t fit as shit. I’m 6’2” and missed Rx time cap by 9 burpees. I can relate to you. I can’t relate to Chandler, although it was cool to watch him.
Way to go ZT! This one is probably the only Open workout I will be able to Rx (lacking in a few skills, excel more at cycling weights), I got 13:36. One of the few times it pays to be short and have short arms, lol.
Feelin ya, man. I'm 51, and while I'm not as stupid tall as you are, I've got suuuper long legs (okay flexibility but I can't touch my toes to save my life). This WOD sucked so. unbelievably. bad. I came in feeling pretty good about my engine, but those burpees ... aaargh. Finished 14.58. [And only cause I was desperate not to get capped.]
The anxiety is real. I got canned at work 2wks ago, trying to figure out how to not have to sell my house and move in order to properly keep my kids taken care of - spend time searching on linkedin and all I see are former classmates crushing it. It's brutal! I appreciate the vulnerability shown, we're all fighting something. This was a grinder workout too, I got in just under 9min and my hip flexor hate me
I was coming back from a week long respiratory cold (coughing for 5 days). I didn't make it, but I do think that when I'm recovered and in shape I could do this in the 13 minute timeframe.
I’m 6 foot 5 (198 cm for 98 kg) 43 yo. Did it RX’d and finished in the last 10s… after 25s break thinking I was done 😅… the last sprint was hard. BUT I did my burpees the « step up » way and it definitely helped a lot. Otherwise I think I would have exploded.
im 53 did it RX 12 reps short of time cap. Im not doin it again now, but will at some point just for the heck of it. I dont sign up for the Open anymore
Same. I just signed up After switching to a deskjob for two years After Coaching… I had the Same Thoughts…. My Body is not Good enough… I cant do it… tuff
@zacktelander Seeing a talented weightlifter and genuine good-guy in the fitness industry talk about the issues of mental health and social media is so refreshing . I know the feeling of comparing myself to others and do it way to often whether its in business, fitness or anything in between and even know you are acutely aware that you shouldn't, you end up doing it anyways. Taking care of my 9-5, showing love to my wife and being a dad for two kids and being there for your friends doesn't always go hand in hand with targets of fitness growth. Watching videos like yours helps me to say that it's quite okay If I dont manage to hit a new PR every month. Wishing you all the best and will be following your progress more focussed after watching this video.
Zack my husband is 37 played rugby his whole life, dabbled in bodybuilding for a bit. Now he's trying to learn the Olympic lifts, I've seen him doing them he seems pretty ok with it but he complains that his form is not right. U have any recommendations for gyms or trainers out here in houston?
