What do you think about the Vipassana “body scanning“ meditation technique? As you may know, it involves observing the sensations of the body, while scanning up and down and through the body. Does it (like you’ve written about breath meditation) also ultimately translate into an awareness (however indirect or unconscious) of death, of the impermanence of the body? A different route to arrive at the same awareness? The main difference I discern is that it elicits or “brings out” more negative emotion (irritation) than breath meditation. In his 10 day course, S.N. Goenka said that the impermanence that the technique teaches has to do with the impermanent nature of the sensations while scanning, which is supposed to show something about the impermanence of “Kalapas” or microparticles that make up the universe. He didn’t say anything about an indirect or peripheral awareness of death, that I can remember.

Great guidelines. Is the arising of existential dread on account of enduring this kind of questioning a sign of right effort/'direction' of practice?

It's a sign of right prerequisite for the practice. Right practice is when you are not trying to get rid of that dread but are able to endure it on the basis of your developed virtue and sense restraint.

This video is very insightful regarding negative feelings and how they are cravings that aren’t our own. We’ve assimilated these feelings which aren’t ours and held onto them. Abandon craving and be free.

The choices that you make, how does it fit into the 5 aggregates? Is it sankhara?
